Gen Z coworker had no idea Gen X “was a thing”

I was talking with a patient at work who is also Gen x about our generation. My 27 y/o office mate didn’t even know there was a Gen X. She said, that’s a thing? What?! Just boomers & millennials in her older people world. Anyone else experience this? My fellow Gen xer & I legit rolled out eyes at each other. God I love our generation!
Subject-Direction628@reddit
Yes lmao. Got called a boomer by a youngin lol who cant write a signature. It’s a symbol.
And she hadn’t heard of Gen x.
skbugco@reddit
I have a Millennial and a GenZ. Z is still at home, going to college. The other day I had him write a note in a thank you card (from both of us). When he gave it back to me, I was like “WTF is this? Sanskrit?” (He’s currently on the ‘President’s List’ at school, carrying a 4.0) “Well dad- they quit teaching us to hand write in like the 4th grade, handed us iPads and laptops where we learned to type instead.” Fair. While he’s not wrong, we’re one Carrington Event (1859 solar flare- did all kinds of crazy things and damage to the then young electrical grid and telegraph infrastructure) away from us GenX’ers busting out the paper maps, pens and lawn darts. Show them kids how it’s done.

Paper maps. Hell damn yes!

In fairness, my signature is basically a symbol at this point, too. Cursive is pretty useless anymore

Well, now we can all write in “code” and these idiot kids won’t understand what we are saying 😂

Writing in cursive is basically encryption for gen z.

I'm openly hated by the Muhlenniels because I can do math in my head; they hate me because I just can't quite conceal my disgust; but gee whiz, my tax dollars were flung in their general direction for two decades, and I've got precious little to show for it
which is a scream because they were actually taught to estimate because their generation was too thick to be taught good old rote carry-the-one arithmetic, it made their hair hurt, but here we are 25 years later and they can't estimate either
if you can't guess a cosine within 20%, read a clock, read a ruler, and make change, we can't be friends

I had a Rambo knife growing up. Cheap and bendy, but man it was cool. They them it *everywhere * for a few years.
LordChauncyDeschamps@reddit
Did it have the shifty compass in the pommel that didnt work?
VikingTeddy@reddit
Haha :D, sure did. Had to shake it to get it oriented, and it wasn't accurate as the ball got stuck constantly. The pommel screwed open (end him rightly!), and the hilt was hollow with random "survival" crap inside.
LordChauncyDeschamps@reddit
I had a similar one, it was "camo" lol. My dad would joke that the matches were "fireproof matches"

The Ninja era was much cooler than the later "Extreme!" branding era in the 90s to 00s. Society really bandwagonned that.
At least the ninja craze was mostly kid facing culture, though ninjas showed up in music videos, like Heart's "These Dreams". They inexplicably show up about 1:28: https://youtu.be/41P8UxneDJE?si=UF3wsCjAe_09Tc3T

caramonwarrior@reddit
That makes sense...after all, everything seems to skip a generation: think about it---- the WWI Generation, a.k.a. the Lost Generation, was known for its political/social/economic outbursts and activism, much as their grandchildren were (the Baby Boomers); the WWII Generation, a.k.a. the Silent Generation, was known for the opposite; as are we.
brezhnervouz@reddit
Have you read the Strauss-Howe cyclical generational theory? Its a little bit pop-science, not sure really how much salt you should take with it lol but it does an interesting job of delineating the generations 🤷♂️
Awakening [Boomers]
According to the theory, the second turning is an awakening. This is an era when institutions are attacked in the name of personal and spiritual autonomy. Just when society is reaching its high tide of public progress, people suddenly tire of social discipline and want to recapture a sense of "self-awareness", "spirituality" and "personal authenticity". Young activists look back at the previous High as an era of cultural and spiritual poverty.
Strauss and Howe say the U.S.'s most recent awakening was the "consciousness revolution", which spanned from the campus and inner-city revolts of the mid-1960s to the tax revolts of the early 1980s.
Unraveling [Gen X]
According to Strauss and Howe, the third turning is an unravelling. The mood of this era they say is in many ways the opposite of a high: Institutions are weak and distrusted, while individualism is strong and flourishing. The authors say highs come after crises when society wants to coalesce and build and avoid the death and destruction of the previous crisis. Unravelings come after awakenings when society wants to atomize and enjoy. They say the most recent unraveling in the US began in the 1980s and includes the long boom and the culture war.
Crisis [Millenials]
According to the authors, the fourth turning is a crisis. This is an era of destruction, often involving war or revolution, in which institutional life is destroyed and rebuilt in response to a perceived threat to the nation's survival. After the crisis, civic authority revives, cultural expression redirects toward community purpose, and people begin to locate themselves as members of a larger group.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strauss%E2%80%93Howe_generational_theory
caramonwarrior@reddit
Huh, interesting! I'll have to look into this Strauss-Howe theory further...I'm guessing that the "Crisis" which preceded the Greatest Generation was WWII?? This leads me to suddenly wonder I'm curious what kind of Crisis will occur now with the Millenials at the forefront, presumably to be the ones to fight this new war...???...
Bubbie67@reddit
If only the Boomers would fucking retire!
brezhnervouz@reddit
Yep, that was it. Howe wrote a more recent book 'The Fourth Turning is Here' (ie the Crisis) a couple of years ago, which I read...well stole from the internet more accurately lol
This page copypasting Wikipedia is a bit more readable
Sounds about right lol
caramonwarrior@reddit
I just read the link...I presume the "Crisis" of this new "4th Turning" would be that Coronavirus Pandemic just past?? It certainly was a crisis of sorts, causing a lot of death and forcing society to react in different ways...

dschinghiskhan@reddit
That ship has sailed. Younger generations have been, and will be calling anyone over 50 a Boomer. Like Millennials will one day be called Boomers. It’s really too bad because I actually think the Boomer Baby Generation individuals are great- for the most part. Uffda01@reddit
This give no fucks and we raised our selves while running feral lead to this notion of complete independence and non-reliance on others which is currently undermining our social fabric and holding us back as every improvement is still screamed at as socialism and communism.

My Gen Z daughter recently sauntered through the house wearing some JCNOs and a kerchief top with Converse, listening to Nirvana like she just invented it 🫠
ConcentrateEmpty711@reddit
YES! My daughter does the same. Awhile back she asked me if I knew what crochet granny square crop tops were. I pulled out pictures of me when I was her age wearing them. 😂 I’ve started making her name 3 songs when she wants a band shirt from the 90’s.
Ok-Maize-284@reddit
I started asking my Gen Z patients wearing whatever 80s or 90s band shirts if they actually like the band, or just the shirt. I’ve gotten every kind of answer from “it’s a band??” (That was a slayer shirt 🤦🏼♀️) to “omg I loooove them” and then proceed to name every album lol.
ConcentrateEmpty711@reddit
I love when kids know the music & the albums, that means someone took their time with them.
Last year my daughter was wearing a The Who shirt, one of her teachers stopped her & asked her to name at least 1 song. She rambled off 5 of their songs including the albums, they weren’t all mainstream songs either. She said the teacher laughed and said she Googled that, she pulled out her phone & showed him her Apple Music library with over 7k songs. After that day he has NEVER questioned her again when she wears 60’s to 90’s band shirts. 😂
Ok-Maize-284@reddit
Niccccce! 🤘🏻
I don’t know how old you are, but I remember in the late 80s a lot of kids my age (I’m 51 now) were getting into Pink Floyd and The Doors (just to name a couple, but there were way more) and they would similarly get drilled when wearing a band shirt haha. It all comes full circle
ConcentrateEmpty711@reddit
I’m 47, while I remember the late 80’s I was in elementary & middle school so it was still the newest hair bands for me. Somewhere in between middle & high school I started liking Pink Floyd & other bands like that even though it was “my dad’s music”.
Then came all grunge music for the next 5-6 years, until I went to college where the Grateful Dead made it full circle. My Bio 103 professor wouldn’t “let us” wear Dead shirts to class because he thought we were just a bunch of “Touch of Grey” fans. 😂
Ok-Maize-284@reddit
Omg DUH! When I was typing it out, I kept saying there’s one more big band there that I’m missing that everyone was getting into. The Grateful Dead! So many of my friends really heavily got into them, went to shows, traveled around to the shows, etc. They would get really upset if they were accused of being “touch of grey” fans lol. I personally never got into them myself, but I can respect them. My aunt and uncle (boomers) are HUGE absolute die hard fans. They are the typical old school dead heads! I’m pretty sure they lost count on how many times they saw them, but it was definitely in the hundreds, and all over the country. They even had a VW bus ✌🏻
FrostnJack@reddit
I'm kinda impressed our OG GenZ kids seem hell bent on preaching our existence and inherent untouchable coolness to fellow Zs and Millennials. On one hand that's cool (there are unkind consequences for being erased by Boomers and their Millennial kids), OTOH it's like bein' caught in the band closet with our pants down. Ahem.

And no one under 60 is a Boomer. All GenX.
LGonthego@reddit
Just slipped in under the wire.
Lynnxa@reddit
What age is “the wire” to you?
LGonthego@reddit
I think Gen X is generally considered birth years 1965-1980. So just under 60 would be the wire on one end and age 45 on the other.
LupercaniusAB@reddit

I know you won’t care, well because of the whole “don’t give a shit”/nihilistic attitude that your generation is famous for. Well as famous as a generation that’s constantly forgotten about can be. Anyways, “Siri does their thinking for them” is precisely why the kids group your generation with the boomers.
You shit on then just like boomers do. Of course they’re not going to view you as any different them.

Sorry, should have said ChatGPT does their thinking for them.

No-Organization7797@reddit
You want to keep getting lumped in with the worst generation, go for it. That’s barely hyperbole, the generation that birthed the boomers agreed that they were self-entitled shits. I like that my generation and the zoomers generally get along. It means we might be able to fix some shit once all the stubborn entitled dinosaurs are finally too frail to keep a grasp on power structures.
Roguefem-76@reddit
You're still talking?
Yeah, good luck "fixing" things with the generation that went MAGA because they're so misogynistic that they'd rather vote for a fascist than a female.

Krysdavar@reddit
Except when we were anywhere in the house....and they told us to GTFO the house (so they could forget again).
earthgarden@reddit
I have encountered many a Millennial who thinks this, it’s because most have Boomer parents. I’d bet cash money your co-worker has old parents. I have a 27 year old, and did not have him at a young age either, I was 25, just shy of 26 by 2 months. Well that might be considered young today, but back then it was regular age to have a kid. So Boomers still having kids were kinda looked at as starting late or finishing late, even though it was pretty common. My 27 year old, about half his friends had Boomer parents and half had GenX parents.
Krysdavar@reddit
This explains why younger people a lot of times (incorrectly) call people "boomers". They don't know what the word actually means and/or the time period.
TaylorMade2566@reddit
That's probably why so many of us get called "boomer" as an insult. We look too old to be a Millennial so they think Boomer is the next generation

kuangmk11@reddit
My boomer parents checked out and let my greatest gen grandparents raise me... i guess thanks for that.
im_dead_sirius@reddit
There's an interesting complication involved with that.
The generations are growing out of wack. Gen X are almost exclusively the kids of Baby boomers, But Zs are the kids of Gen X, The Mills, and possibly even a few Boomers. The youngest boomers were born around 1964, and the oldest Gen Z were born in 1997, so an older Zer could have a boomer parent who was 33.
And it is getting more extreme. For example, my nephew is Gen Alpha, born to a Gen-X. His great grandmother, who he knew fairly well, was born in 1922.
The whole Gen thing is fated to be a short lived trope. All the generations before Baby Boomers were, to make a pun, grandfathered in. They line up nicely because of that, but future ones will have overlapping/mismatching parental generations. My nephew has a niece who is also Gen Alpha.
So that blurring of lines plays a part in the issue with OPs coworker's generation's confusion. They don't conceptualise the generations in a trope like way. Its just a big mess, and its going to be messier.
JenThisIsthe1nternet@reddit
Thank you! I like this explanation best! Logical, fact based and good enough for my Gen X brain to be satisfied and never care about the Gen crap again. Thank you fellow X!

Reachforthesky777@reddit
It's well documented how Gen X is ignored and/or forgotten. This seemed to start with the Millennials and has only become more prominent with Z and Alpha.
While some may take comfort in this, the reality is that when younger generations complain about "Boomers", they mean Silent Gen, Baby Boomers, and Gen X. They're just lumping us all into that label together ignoring any distinction despite their own propensity to granularly label their own generations - "Elder Millennial", "Xennial", "Gen X Millennial", etc. It's been proposed that this behavior is a symptom of generations narcissism and self-loathing but, I don't really know anything about that - nor do I care beyond a quick chuckle at the absurdity of this all.

caramonwarrior@reddit
Multiple factors go into determining the way a person is...genetics, environment, even one's Generation and Zodiac play a part...just not any ONE thing...
Soup-Mother5709@reddit
Obviously multiple factors go into what makes someone who they are. Generation labels shouldn’t be black and white. They can be and often are very wrong. People accept it as fact. Just like they’ll be born in March, but claim they are a cancer rising hence not reflecting their true Aries sign. It’s a load of bs. If it helps people define who they are for themselves, fine. Sadly to many zoomers us olds are either millennials or boomers
MadMaxBeyondThunder@reddit
Ageism is all over corporate social media as if it is a virtue. You know, because of Boomers.
YogiBearShark@reddit
Gen Z is making Millennials look better and better. I don’t like that. :)
YakApprehensive7620@reddit
But why lol I always loved gen X, my older brother and all my cousins were the ones who would let me smoke cigs, show off their tats and make me promise not to tell, let me watch in living color when they babysat me…love you guys
Imaginary_Month_3659@reddit
Her parents are almost certainly Genx.
Money-Biscotti6680@reddit
That Nirvana shirt you wear
ascii122@reddit
we never mattered anyway .. so it goes .. the song remains the same... same as it ever was
Honest_Tutor1451@reddit
Yep, my 28 year old gen z coworker called me a boomer one day(I was 45 and now 46). And I was like “bruh…no fucking way am I a boomer” and then he was like “I’m sorry, millennial” and I was like “wtf, do you know gen x exists?” Wild, considering his parents are probably gen x. Then he tried to cover it up by saying you can call anyone a boomer and it doesn’t matter when they were born. 🤦
tultamunille@reddit
I didn’t either, except for Billy Idol’s band and a book.
This whole generation thing is a bunch of BS.
Rand_74@reddit
It’s like we were erased from history. Yet, they all walk around in Nirvana t shirts….
ddjdrockit88@reddit
Finally someone who doesnt attach any importance to labels. When did labelling of generations become something anyone gave a shit about??
-The_Guy_@reddit
Probably because are generation largely just let our parents and grandparents sell the country for parts while we kept our mouths shut and tried our best to get ours.
Repulsive-Duty905@reddit
That’s perfect. We haven’t been detected yet.
Hawkes75@reddit
Gen X is the only one that isn't a meme.
well-informedcitizen@reddit
The middle children of history
elvisndsboats@reddit
No surprise, considering how often we're left out of lists. We like it that way, tbh. (Except for people thinking we're boomers, ugh, lol)
Haisha4sale@reddit
How could I be the same generation as my parents??
DefinitionRound538@reddit
We're the hidden generation lol Or I like to think that we're the generation not making ourselves look like damn fools!
Available-Leg-1421@reddit
It isn’t. Stop talking about it

Of course. We fly under the radar. And the keyhole.
LSX3399@reddit
I've said it before...Gen X is like the Mountain Time zone; no one ever talks about it but it's the lowkey the best.
busybox42@reddit
It's called being young and I miss it. That time in life when you thought you knew most things but your inexperience shone through. I probably couldn't have told you who the Silent Generation was when I was in my 20's.
SmearingFeces@reddit
They’re such geeks. I love telling them I bought a shitty house in Boston for $200K in 2001, and they can GFT.
Texy@reddit
We are the forgotten, the neglected
Rare-Degree-9596@reddit
I mean, it seems like Millennials don't really know we exist either. I mentioned this at work to some Millennials borderline Gen Z and they said something along the lines of, "You don't get to like, make up your own generation name". "Like, what does Generation X even mean?"
Totally clueless.
They're so caught up blaming Boomers for everything, they are really going to shit when all the inheritances start going to their parents instead of them. And we're all going to get, "Wait, what do you mean Boomers gave it all to you!?!" "You mean, I'm not not going to get grandma's house, just because I wanted it?"
I need to be kinda blunt here, are they really that ignorant or just stupid, or are we that good at being incognito?
We did grow up on ninja movies, 80s TV and basically having to survive on our own, so these dumbasses are going to be in for a wake up call!

Boomer here who loves Gen X! The best movie and tv stars!
Allemaengel@reddit
I'm perfectly OK with that.
shivaswrath@reddit
GenX is under the radar and I love it.
Only we know each other.
And at this age we DGAF and just want to retire.
LanguidLandscape@reddit
The “end of history” is very real for new generations. As a college prof I’ve watched student awareness of the past dwindle to a tight window of individuated experience with little to no regard for ANYTHING outside of their personal bubble. It’s sad and frustrating and concerning that younger people are so isolated in time as well as place/socially.
Meepoclock@reddit
I have not experienced it personally but seen social media posts that jump from Boomers to Millennials and there’s always a few wise folks pointing out the omission.
No-Diet-4797@reddit

The forgotten generation
Not_thereal_Moeflam@reddit
I didn't know Gen X was a thing until earlier this year 😁. New to the club. I had long ago dismissed generations as just a millennial thing, shrugged, and never gave it another thought. Was being true to my clan before I knew I was part of the clan. 🍻
xxDailyGrindxx@reddit
That tracks with how we're omitted from every younger generations' memes...
bookwurmy@reddit
My Gen X sister didn’t know Gen X was a thing! She thought I was a boomer and she was a Millennial. We’re only 4 years apart. Not sure how she missed our entire generation existing.
WyoGrads@reddit
They belong in r/kidsarefuckingstupid
sljxuoxada@reddit
I'm pretty sure my boomer parents had no idea us Gen Xers were a thing either. They sure didn't act like they had kids.
Iittletart@reddit
A lot of Gen Z are the kids of Gen X so there is no one to blame but ourselves.
mutepaladin07@reddit
There's a reason why they call you guys the Forgotten generation, Generation X.
qnssekr@reddit
Gen Z is the most clueless generation. Completely out of touch with reality with whatever they do.
ialto37@reddit

justdisa@reddit
Sure. Nobody was born between 1965 and 1980. Because that's totally plausible.

Shhh....don't tell her any more. We are like ninjas. Let them think we do not exist.
AT-ST@reddit
That's weird since her parents were likely GenX. If not her parents than definitely the parents of most of her friends growing up were GenX.
Martiantripod@reddit
Many Gen Z lump Gen X in with the Boomers. For them Boomers doesn't stop at '65 it just means "old people".
tvieno@reddit
In other words, in her world, you're a boomer.
sometimeswhy@reddit
Our claim to fame is being overlooked and forgotten. But we know we are the coolest
Giganticbigbig@reddit
I’m convinced there’s some joke of the universe that we are the “forgotten” generation. Like very 90s x-files that no one can remember gen x.
Ok-Writing9280@reddit
Middle child generation
worrymon@reddit
I'd worry if I cared at all about generations
slbarr@reddit
I’ve repeated several times something I read years ago. Gen X is the “squeezed generation.” We’re squeezed between the Boomers and Millennials, and tend to get missed.
dynamic_caste@reddit
It's not.. Probably a typo. Nothing to see here.
Sanctioned-Bully@reddit
Let them keep ignoring us.
smthngsmthngdarkside@reddit
The number of times I've had to list the generations because they're unknown...
Greatest (IMHO undeserved name) Silent Baby boomers (boomer part 1) Jones (boomer part 2) Gen x Millennials (aka gen y, aka gen .com) Gen Z Alphas.
notreallylucy@reddit
Typical young person behavior. Every generation thinks they're the first to invent something. Only a teenager can hear they're part of Zand never question what happened to the other 25 letters of the alphabet.
Suspicious_Ear3442@reddit
Meanwhile me and my fellow Xennials are just here, chillin, doing our own thing.

Forgotten generation.
ranoutofbacon@reddit
I tell people all the time I don't exist. I'm a phantom. A figment of their imagination.
Jackdiscreet43@reddit
Hence the reason we are the Forgotten Generation. No leave us alone. We are the “break glass in case of emergency “ generation. Don’t break the glass. We really don’t care.
Aggressive-Ad3064@reddit
They're amazingly ignorant. Comes from spending 10hrs a day on TikTok

GeneralLivid7332@reddit
Keeping things running since 1987'sh. The only "thing" we aren't the head of is politics in the US.

NihilsitcTruth@reddit
Yea let them think we don't exist. Better for both of us.
WeHoMuadhib@reddit
Sssshhh. Don't tell them. We're the middle step children of history, overlooked and ignored. Many of us want it that way. I just want to quietly work my way towards retirement while Millennials and Gen Z blame Boomers and everyone else for their woes.
CASUALxCHICKEN@reddit
