Upgrade to ryzen 7 9800x3d or wait for AM6 cpus?

So I've been thinking about upgrading my cpu to get a bit more out of my rtx 5080. Currently I have a i7 12700k which admittedly does pretty good for what I play. But there have been times I've been cpu limited for one reason or another and feel like a need a little to get to 120fps at 3440 x 1440. Is this a lot of times? No. But I was genuinely curious what others thought would be the better choice. Thanks for any inputs.

AM6 is rumoured for 2028 so it's a pretty long wait. There's at least one more series of CPUs due for AM5 before AM6.
The 9800x3D performance vs a 12700k will actually be quite significant. The normal rules don't apply when you're moving over to an x3D.
All depends on whether or not you think you need an upgrade now or if you can wait about 3 years, really.

The wait till AM6 is a big factor for me. Like right now yeah the 12700k is mostly fine but over those 3 years will a game come along that really is an issue. Cyberpunk is one of the games giving me a bit of trouble hitting 120 at a few points so far. If I get a similar uplift like the video it should be enough to fix that. I'll definitely have to consider on this a bit more.

Zen 7 is also almost certain to be am5. There's no reason to wait 5 years to build.

This is half of why I made the post too, so I could make sure I wasn't missing something like that. Im probably gonna look at upgrading then.

I've recently got myself an 9800x3D for the same reasons really. I had a 5600x before and it was generally "fine" and I could have lived with it but I could afford the upgrade and I like my 120 fps so I went for it.
It resulted in 30-60% more FPS depending on the game.. paired with a 5070ti. I was also moving from DDR4 to DRR5 RAM as well of course.

I actually forgot going from DDR4 to DDR5 is a factor into this as well. So my upgrade wouldn't be extremely dissimilar to yours in all honesty. What you said here especially gives me a lot to think about.

The latest leak says Zen 7 is still AM5 so good luck waiting for AM6 lol.

am6 is lookin like a pretty large upgrade if you are oky with the 12700k

Am6 is likely to be Zen 8, 2030+

sorry I meant zen 6

That's what it is seeming like so far. Like I said for the most part it is okay. Just a few times it's been the problem but not many.

Personally, I would wait. The 9800X3D is a great CPU, but at your chosen resolution, the performance difference isn't going to be worth the cost.

This was definitely one of my biggest concerns. I wasn't too sure if the price to performance was gonna be there.
