Derringer owners?

What's your personal experience, and what would you recommend?
My plans are to get a .410.45 bonds arms, maybe the .357 but probably the .410 as I'd prefer a shotgun for close quarters. Also not sure to go with the standard barrel or get the Texan 6 inch for better recoil\managmet. Also not sure if I want the trigger guard since it gives me more options for a variety of clip\belt buckle carry.
One question I do have, and I'm sure the answer is no, but they don't make lasers for them?
returnofthepoor@reddit
Why do you prefer a shotgun shell over a pistol caliber?
Your_As_Stupid_As_Me@reddit (OP)
I just don't see myself finding myself in a situation where I need to stop a long range target. Il be carrying it for close quarters interactions. But it also give me the option to load one barrel with a shell, and the other with a .45 in case I do feel paranoid.
Jbh1932@reddit
Try to be realistic. You’re not gonna be engaging a long range target with a derringer. It doesn’t matter what you’re shooting 410 or .45
Your_As_Stupid_As_Me@reddit (OP)
I am being realistic, I never said I am planning on using this for long distance. I've mentioned a few times in the comments, but I guess I need to reedit the post since people don't read too much.
If I really believe I'm going to engage in long distance shooting, il carry my 9mm. Realisticly, I'm not trying to stop a Walmart shooter, I'm trying to stop a person that is most likely less than 10ft and advancing on me.
Jbh1932@reddit
S&W governor if you’re dead set on 410 I guess. You do you lol
returnofthepoor@reddit
Well, a 3 inch barrel 410 isn't remotely close to giving you shotgun power and pistol calibers aren't for long range.
Your_As_Stupid_As_Me@reddit (OP)
I'm not asking about power, nor asking about range. I already mentioned that I have no plans to use this for long distance shooting.
I guess I can only ask the question again, since apparently I'm not getting help on making a choice for what I'm specifically looking at.
If a Derringer is completely stupid, does anyone here have any other recommendations for a .410 pistol?
I'm not interested in anything 9mm .22 etc, extended magazines, or anything else you prefer.
returnofthepoor@reddit
Our point is that 410 is a terrible choice for close range shooting and pistol calibers will be more effective for basically any use besides snake shot.
Your_As_Stupid_As_Me@reddit (OP)
I literally see no comments that mentioned short-range shooting except my own, just everybody self projecting that I'm going to be trying to kill somebody at Walmart halfway across the store.
returnofthepoor@reddit
Nobody has said that. We're saying that 410 pistols suck in basically every imaginable way.
TacTurtle@reddit
410 pistols with rifled barrels pattern like crap and have godawful ballistics compared to normal pistol calibers.
Your_As_Stupid_As_Me@reddit (OP)
Well I'm glad someone asked a question, I gave an answer and apparently it's wrong?
Bond arms offers a few selection of frames, not all weight the same.
Kromulent@reddit
the derringers i have handled have been terrible weapons - slow, heavy, awkward, and very hard to shoot well
almost any small pistol is a better choice. a ruger LCP is cheaper too
Your_As_Stupid_As_Me@reddit (OP)
Any recommendations on a pocket sized .410 then? Because that's what I'm in the market for.
Kromulent@reddit
000 .410 buck moves out at about 850 fps from a full-sized handgun - it'll be slower in shorter barrel. Each pellet is about 70 grains
In comparison, a .32 acp of the same weight runs about 1000fps, and this is at best a marginal caliber. With .410 buck, you'll get hit with multiple balls, but none of them will penetrate very deeply
An LCP give you six rounds of .380 in a lighter, thinner, cheaper platform that you can quickly reload and that's easier to hit with. Its just no comparison
But if you really want one, find an inexpensive one and try it out. If you still like it, get just what you prefer
My best derringer was a .45acp American Derringer Model 1, a nice gun, as derringers go. The first barrel would shoot roughly to point of aim, the second barrel would hit a couple of feet higher(!) at 7 yards. It was slow to get the first shot off, and it was a heavy brick of a gun
Your_As_Stupid_As_Me@reddit (OP)
I completely understand how much different the calibers will perform...
I'm just asking from owners, would it be better with a trigger guard or longer barrel, not necessary an entire lecture and no answer.
It apparently was wrong to post these questions here. Post analytics show 8 downvotes. Why? I don't know.
It seems like I asked what gormet provolone is creamier, just
Kromulent@reddit
Well a longer barrel is going to be heavier, and recoil less. It would be easier to shoot, as a trade off for pocketability.
The trigger guard would not do much in terms of safety, the hammer is down until the gun is in your hand ready to fire. I don't see any point to it at all
Beagalltach@reddit
To be fair, everyone is just trying to steer you away from this desire to use 410 as a defensive round.
The fact that there aren't many options (derringers, Taurus Judge revolver, and maybe 1 or 2 more) is a good indicator of the lack of viability of the idea.
No one here is going to recommend a 410 option because they are gimmicks and range toys, not respected as or expected to be a real self-defense option.

I have a 2.5" 9mm Bond Arms. It will barely hit the broadside of a barn with the muzzle against the barn. I can't help. I've ankle, belly, and pocket carried it as a backup. For real close and personal use. Laser wouldn't matter.
Your_As_Stupid_As_Me@reddit (OP)
I can imagine accuracy would be horrible considering the short barrel. Even the .410.45 3" barrel apparently has less than an inch of rifiling, which is why I'm also considering the 6" barrel instead.
NinjaBuddha13@reddit
Novelty item. Definitely dont carry one for any serious purpose.
Th3BaconNation@reddit
I had one in 410/45colt, 38/357 and 22lr. 410 buckshot was the only one that was accurate, if such a word can even be said about it. The recoil with 410 was brutal on the hand. They're around the same size as a micro compact, but with a significantly worse trigger, slower to use because you have to cock the hammer, a massive capacity disadvantage, terrible sights, and tortoise speed reloading. The only useful reason I found to having one was if you were going to do a shooting contest amongst friends and wanted to enhance your odds of winning by having your friends try the 410 derringer before the contest started so they'd have a numb hand the rest of the day. That tactic only works 1x.

Also taking any recommendations on custom grips. Right now I have some blue "crackle" grips from years ago, which may or may not fit.
