How to get a credit card for ID verification?

I have an awful credit rating - I mean it's so bad it laughs when I try to do stuff. Steam has brought in the OSA and it requires a credit card. I spent all morning looking for one, but I kept getting declined for bad credit or being on benefits. I found one but it seemed dodgy because it wants me to pay a monthly fee.
Does anyone have any advice on how to deal with these stupid ID rules that need a credit card?

I haven't added a credit card to my Steam account, haven't verified my age and can still browse the store and add PEGI 18 games to my basket.
Doesn't appear you need a credit card or Steam stops working 🤔

credit cards come in tiers, select a credit card that is for building your credit score to begin with - i would ask gpt for suggestions but i remember i started with aqua

Im no expert but you have likely made it worse by keeping applying. It sounds like you just need to stop applying for credit, pay everything off and wait for it to get better. I think its about 7 years this info is kept for.

Can you get a “secured credit card”? In the US we have these where you give them cash up front to hold to secure your credit line, so they’re 0 risk for the bank and often how kids get their first credit card to start building credit. So for instance you give the bank £500 and they give you a card with a £500 limit. Then you use and pay like a normal credit card. When you close that card or eventually get approved to convert to a std card they give you your money back.
