The mid engined car needs to be called the MR2 to make sense. Why call it the Celica?
WabbitCZEN@reddit
Fun fact: The Supra began as a trim level for the Celica.
hehechibby@reddit
Another one is the 'Highlander' use to be a trim on the 3rd gen 4Runner which then became Sport Edition
Not sure if it's the reason for the Highlander itself but maybe
Oh and the Camry had a 'Solara' package which then became it's own thing
AnonymousEngineer_@reddit
Amusingly, Toyota needed to rebadge and sell that car the Kluger in Australia because "Highlander" was already taken by a trim level of the Hyundai Santa Fe.
Lutetia03@reddit
What a weird. Like vaguely Germany but isn't.
SockeyeSTI@reddit
WRX and STI being an Impreza
wa11yba11s@reddit
the entire genesis badge being a RWD hyundai coupe.
Noobasdfjkl@reddit
No, the Genesis sedan came first.
bill_brasky37@reddit
Outback was a trim of the Impreza also
sorariku124@reddit
Outback was a trim of the Legacy, Outback Sport was a trim for the Impreza that later turned into the Crosstrek
bill_brasky37@reddit
Gah of course I screwed that up
sorariku124@reddit
Lol you were close

The most extreme example of this must be Polestar which was previously the performance trim of Volvo before the name was repurposed by Geely and relaunched into its own brand.
At least Genesis was an actual model.
VelikBatafuker@reddit
To go even deeper, Polestar started as a racing team, which than had a road car tuning division.
Megaripple@reddit
Even odder: so did Camry! (well bodystyle, not trim, but funny how both nameplates originate there)
V8-Turbo-Hybrid@reddit
GT-R also began as a trim level for Skyline/Q50, it used to be Japanese BMW M3. Supra isn't really alone.
die-microcrap-die@reddit
its going to be a real Supra or another S.I.N.O. (Supra In Name Only)?
420bIaze@reddit
To replicate the "real" Supra it'd need to be sold with a 4-speed slushbox and a boat anchor 220hp n/a 2JZ.
AmbassadorLeather224@reddit
Lower displacement + turbo + hybrid, because CAFE average is all that matters.
zoobygainz@reddit
Can we please stop posting articles with this as the source?
Bau5_Sau5@reddit
That’s easily doable. We have 4 cylinders making 300+hp.
You add two electric motors to the front axles and you can make 500+
zoobygainz@reddit
Based on what existing powertrain would Toyota be doing that? Would they develop something and be able to sell the car at a reasonable price?
420bIaze@reddit
The new Toyota 2 litre turbo engine is the one part of this story that is confirmed to be true:
"Meanwhile, the mid-engined GR Yaris M Concept features an under-development 2.0-litre, inline 4-cylinder, turbocharged powerplant. This new engine pushes the limits of performance and efficiency, with very compact dimensions helping to generate a low centre of gravity"

There are photos of the engine:

Astramael@reddit
Yea, Best Car reporting is useless. They will report anything.
pwnitol@reddit
This is a confusing thread.
tri_9@reddit
This article has some wild claims, with no sources. So the Celica is going to have: mid engine, hybrid, awd, manual transmission, carbon fiber panels, and 400 hp? lol ok
Dazzling-Rooster2103@reddit
For a low low price of $120k starting, and then a $50k markup because Toyota dealers are stuck in 2020.
hi_im_bored13@reddit
I think they are stuck in reality considering Toyotas still objectively stick around on the lot the least time
Dazzling-Rooster2103@reddit
Love that I can go pick up a BRZ at invoice pricing, but Toyota dealers are still markup up the exact same car by $5k because it has a Toyota badge.
Phazushift@reddit
Its because the BRZ this gen looks ugly af when put next to the 86...
element515@reddit
These days you're lucky to get a corolla at MSRP. Demand is there and Toyota is just resting a finger on their lines to pinch off supply just enough.
Sturmgeshootz@reddit
Not the first time that has happened. Years ago when my wife and I were car shopping she liked the Toyota Matrix. I told her we could get a Pontiac Vibe for significantly cheaper because of the nameplate, even though it was the exact same car. She put her foot down and said she'd never ever buy a Pontiac and we got the Matrix. I have never been able to convince her that she was wrong and that we wasted money.
star_trek_lover@reddit
And it’s still outselling the BRZ substantially, which is crazy.
Aero06@reddit
The badges have completely switched places since they began building the 86, where Subaru was steeped in rally heritage and Toyota was seen as a blasé economy brand in 2013, now GR has a fair bit of enthusiast prestige while Subaru is seen as the marque of commuter CUVs.
Vhozite@reddit
I think that’s more an issue of production instead of it being a big demand discrepancy. Seems like they build 2-3 GR’s for every BRZ.
Total_InZAINity@reddit
This is mostly due to production. I don't know the exact ratio, but contractually Subaru has to produce more GR86s to BRZs. I think I've heard 2 or 3:1 thrown around before.
Subaru has also cut BRZ production in the past since they only have an allotment for so many US vehicles and they prefer to use that for their Forresters/Outbacks
hi_im_bored13@reddit
And while the 86 was having some of its best sales ever last year BRZ sales were falling!
> GR86 for example, increased by 3.1 percent to 11,426 units, putting it miles ahead of its Subaru BRZ sister, whose registrations dropped 20.1 percent to 3,345
SkPensFan@reddit
Zero markups in Canada. Its so much better.
Innocent-Bystander94@reddit
Nah. The dealers get you with add ons. Eve if you get a car quoted to you without add ons, you’ll be waiting a while since they’ll sell what they get with the add ons to the schmuck who’ll pay for it.
SkPensFan@reddit
Haven't ever experienced that here on the prairies. If its attempted, report it to Toyota Canada and the dealer will not get allocated vehicles.
xXEliteEater500Xx@reddit
Sounds more like you’re stuck in 2020
probablyhrenrai@reddit
"New MR-2 rumored" articles are the new "RX-9 rumored [by me, the author, literally 2 minutes before writing this]" article.
Unless the OEM says something directly, it's not happening.
EpicLegendX@reddit
I just wait until car makers unveil the car or when a bunch of reputable sources corroborate the rumors.

Would this be the first manual hybrid car in the world?
Agloe_Dreams@reddit
"mid-engine Celica"
If only Toyota had a better name for that car...maybe like, say, based on the engine-drive config and the number of seats. Like, only an example here: "Mid Rear - 2" I guess they could also just use the first letters...

emp_mei_is_bae@reddit
From the rumors I’ve read the mr2 they were working on is going to be named the Celica for some reason. Just in case people are confused
PaintProtectionDFW@reddit
A month ago it was "v8 supra coming in 2026"
A-VR-Enthusiast@reddit
Well fuck, I was hoping the celica was just going to be a coupe corolla with all the bits from the gr version as a trim level.
Master-Mission-2954@reddit
Hmmm...is the GT Concept the Supra? If so, I wonder if it'll be priced similarly to the Zupra. Also, mid-engined Celica? Does that mean no MR-2? So many questions.
hi_im_bored13@reddit
the GT concept is the LFA successor and is coming sooner
Master-Mission-2954@reddit
So why have the Toyota GT Concept AND the Lexus Sport Concept?
gor134@reddit
The Lexus Sport Concept (SC) is the RC/LC successor that's going to share a platform with the upcoming Supra. Less bespoke than the Toyota GR-GT.
ducky21@reddit
Why does Chik Fil A have so many different kinds of chicken sandwich?
parker2020@reddit
Do they? It’s like 3 chicken types plus minus different bread and “delux” so like 9 maybe 12 different combinations?
ducky21@reddit
I've actually been a vegetarian most of my life so I have no idea how many kinds of chicken sandwich they sell, but it seemed like a useful rhetorical question to help /u/Master-Mission-2954 answer their own question. I would trust you if you told me there aren't actually that many permutations.
Some people just absolutely require spoonfeeding though, I guess.

"I love the Celica! Cheap, cheerful FWD with sedate na engines and an AWD turbo top trim. Boy when it comes back I hope it's a mid engined, expensive AWD fire breathing dragon!!"
People don't seem to understand most of the Celiacs were 2.2L Camry engines, FWD. Don't take a cheap car and make it expensive.
I don't believe this rumour at all
Kriffer123@reddit
For the love of god, when will people stop parroting Best Car Japan speculation as fact?
Vhozite@reddit
Strange that the Celica is supposedly going to be mid-engine when there are also rumors about that model coming back.
But this is all sourced from Best Car so who knows how accurate it’ll all end up being.
MasoFFXIV@reddit
MR-Celica is just the kind of BS I'll believe right now.
ducky21@reddit
Names are marketing decisions and doesn't matter at all to most people in charge. "MR2 is coming" could very well be engineers working on a mid engine car, and now, close to launch, marketing has decided that mid engine car is going to be called a Celica.
So both rumors are true, but they're not true for intuitive, speculative reasons, just banal "someone arbitrarily decided" reasons.
AmbassadorLeather224@reddit
Dear Toyota,
Thanks!
-- a Mk4 owner watching values keep going up
ZaheerAlGhul@reddit
Isn't there rumors of the MR2 coming back as well?
vrkas@reddit
AWD Celicas were always expensive AF. I can't remember the exact numbers, but I was looking at the adjusted prices for ST185 Sainz/Rallye/etc editions and they were eye watering.
Organic-Quarter-6160@reddit
500hp sounds nice on paper but how much will it weigh given that it's now a hybrid? I'd take 370hp and 3400 lbs over 500hp and 4000 lbs.
Main_Hornet8676@reddit
Man, how much is this thing going to cost? I see 6MT Supras going as much for 70k.
V8-Turbo-Hybrid@reddit
Sounds like Toyota not going to offer four different sports car models in future, as they've seen current sports car market not that great and become worser.
Anyway, I highly doubt Celica or Supra would become as new MR2. Celica and Supra case isn't like Corvette, its former designers never intend to make it as MR layout sports car. Celica was a pony car to respond Mustang when it released.
SirLoinsALot03@reddit
I'm excited but skeptical what this Celica will shake out to be.
turboash78@reddit
Mid engine Celica aka MR2?
TheRefurbisher_@reddit
Is it saying that there will be a Celica powered by a turbo four with a Supra version similar to back in the day when the Supra was a trim of the celica? And the Supra will be the same as the celica but with hybrid so more horsepower? Idk if I believe this…
shouldahadaflat4@reddit
