Timing chain 5.9L magnum in a ram 1500, 190k miles.
ConsistentType4371@reddit
Yeah that’s no good, chief
donald7773@reddit (OP)
Thanks - ordering a chain since everyone threw tomatoes at me
ConsistentType4371@reddit
Make sure you mark the sprockets against the body or put something to chock the two gears against each other between them before you take one off. Last thing you want to do is fuck that up.
donald7773@reddit (OP)
I assume there's some sort of procedure to ensure you keep it in time. I've got a manual for it I can check, I've done a good handful of timing belts before so I'm not too stressed about it
Ha1lStorm@reddit
Yeah there is, they just gave a couple of them.
Beginning-Cash-3299@reddit
Chain and gears. I donno if you can even get one without. But dont just slap a chain you found on that thing.
donald7773@reddit (OP)
Kit comes with gears
AMS2008@reddit
Replace the gears and chain-it would be false economy to not do it at this point of disassembly.
4x4Welder@reddit
Way too much, and with how much labor there is to get back in there, just replace it.
donald7773@reddit (OP)
Really isn't that bad, but I'm picking the new timing set up today
Johnny808@reddit
Up to 1/2" of play is OK in these old Mopars. 5.2L is based off of the 318, 5.9 off the 360, even the AMC 4.0 uses a near identical chain and sprocket set. No chance you skipped timing, but JP Performance offers double- row timing chains.
donald7773@reddit (OP)
Auto zone offers one I can pick up today. Motor is stock for now so should be fine until I go back in in a year or so
toewalldog@reddit
Do these not normally come with a chain tensioner? I know new chains will slowly stretch overtime but man that seems excessive.
juwyro@reddit
No tensioners on these old pushrod engines.
Estef74@reddit
Wrong. Mopar magnum engines came with timing chain tensioner starting in 1994
drtwzrd4130@reddit
My 2001 had no tensioner.
Estef74@reddit
Wild. Apparently not all of them got one. I have seen a few that had it and doubt it was an aftermarket part.havi g seen a couple magnums with the tensioner, I assumed that was standard equipment in the. Maybe not so standard
donald7773@reddit (OP)
This is a 96 and there is no tensioner
SprungMS@reddit
If there’s no mounting points for a tensioner, definitely possible it’s not the original engine and someone swapped an earlier one because it’s what was available at the time. Can you find the VIN tag or any manufacturing stamps or identifying casting?
donald7773@reddit (OP)
I can check next time I'm out - apparently there's a heavy duty and regular duty motor for the 1500s, both 5.9 and according the the graphics of the timing chain mine is regular duty
donald7773@reddit (OP)
To be fair it's been 30 years and 200k miles just about
Training-Fact-7775@reddit
Your there just replace
kingofkayos@reddit
this is too much slack
donald7773@reddit (OP)
nah button it up and run it
Ragefear@reddit
Replace with gears and call it done
poorboychevelle@reddit
WHAAAAAAT?
donald7773@reddit (OP)
Truck has 200k miles, chain made it this far, I doubt it'll still be on the road at 400k and it definitely won't belong to me by then anyways. New chain is good enough
Splazoid@reddit
Is that an option for these?
DooDahMan420@reddit
Dot on the top of both gears at tdc. You should set it there before you take it apart. That way its real easy like when you reassemble
donald7773@reddit (OP)
Can't be too difficult, I've done a few timing jobs before just not with chains, only belts
coffeejj@reddit
If you question it…..replace it. Timing chain is cheap. Another engine rebuild is not. Your there, replace it
donald7773@reddit (OP)
It's already ordered
EmergingTuna21@reddit
If you’re already in there why not just replace the gears and chain
donald7773@reddit (OP)
Read some comments
donald7773@reddit (OP)
I'm gonna ignore it anyways but was wondering if it's something that should be on my radar
SprungMS@reddit
I think you’re getting downvoted so heavily because people don’t realize you posted this comment before getting any advice along with the main post. They’re reading the doomsayer comments above, then getting down here at the bottom of the thread to see you (appear to) say “well fuck you guys I’m gonna ignore it anyway”. It does read like that until you realize the timing of it all.
donald7773@reddit (OP)
Is what it is, I said I'd ignore it because most of the videos I have seen on this have basically the same chain play. I genuinely believe I could slap it back together and run it another 100k miles this way with no real issues.
It'd be down a little on power maybe, minor change in fuel economy maybe but it's nowhere close to slipping a tooth and there's plenty of life left on the gears. For a slow old truck I paid $1500 for itd be fine.
But since I'm not gonna be finished today anyways Ill go ahead and get a new timing set
SOLE_SIR_VIBER@reddit
A new engine should be on your radar for the future if this is your attitude.
donald7773@reddit (OP)
It halfway is anyways, wanna play with a motor and since these are cheap it's a good place to start. I was hoping to pull a junkyard 5.9 and do heads, cam, intake and just rebuild the bottom end.
Estef74@reddit
Why ignore it when its right there. Better yet, why bother asking if your going to ignore the advice anyway
donald7773@reddit (OP)
I plan on getting back in here in the near future - less than a year or so. I want to play with the motor eventually but Im trying to start with "get it running right and not leaking" and I'm in this far for a water pump since it's original with 200k miles
Since I got stuck on something else I may end up getting a chain anyways, I was really hoping to get the truck back on the road today, just finished a full suspension refresh on the front half
thisucka@reddit
Idiotic
EksCelle@reddit
It's too much slop. Typically you want around a 1/2 inch of play.
Why ignore it? The gears look OK, just get a new chain. You're already in there!
AntiqueCheesecake876@reddit
If you put a new chain on there you’ll gain back a shitload of power
Quietus76@reddit
You've already got her opened up. Just replace it while you're there.
donald7773@reddit (OP)
Don't wanna though jk
I was hoping to be driving again today but since that's not happening looks like im waiting on a chain too
Quietus76@reddit
I think you can add a tensioner from a later Magnum to that. Mine is from 1998 and it has one.
joegekko@reddit
The good news is, it's never going to be easier to replace the chain than it is right now.
donald7773@reddit (OP)
You see there's like one whole extra bolt I have to pull.....I got stuck on another issue, I was gonna ignore it since I wanted it running again today but looks like a no go from everyone else
Agent-Kid@reddit
Too much slack. iirc, the rule of thumb is about a finger width of play.
Definitely fix/replace it, especially if you have an interference engine, as that could turn into a very expensive repair bill.
donald7773@reddit (OP)
Good news is these motors are cheap at least. Got stuck on something else, was hoping to be running again today but looks like that's not gonna happen so I don't mind waiting on a chain now
Catatafish@reddit
....No
jeksmiiixx@reddit
Just get a new chain on there. You're already right there.
