In early August, just before meeting with Trump in Washington, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy issued a pointed warning against decoupling.

"There can be no division between Ukraine and Moldova," Zelenskyy said.

"If such a division takes place, that will automatically mean that Europe is divided on Ukraine, that Europe does not have a common position on (security) guarantees."

I bet Moldova doesn't feel the same way, they're sitting there watching Ukraine lose, knowing they're next, and Ukraine is like "if Russia is going to drag us down, you're going with us!"

It's silly to act like they're the same country, although I'm surprised Hungary approves of Moldova given it also has a contested region and is technically at war, seems equally dicey to accept them into the union if you're going to have to mutually defend them against Russia in the end anyway. Big risk for such a small addition.

I explained why I would expect both to be rejected, but they are in no way tied to each other even if Ukraine feels slighted by being a lower priority due to the poor position they're in on the battlefield. You're pro-Ukrainian so obviously you'd like if everything favored Ukraine, but life doesn't work that way.
