Other way around: What car had the worst fuel economy?
Posted by ChangeForAParadigm@reddit | cars | View on Reddit | 625 comments
My 2022 Bronco 2.3L I4 with the manual gets 18 mpg, but it gets it at any speed up to 80 mph. The automatics have 4 extra gears for highway cruising and can get as much as 23 mpg at 70 mph.
More_Shoulder_9210@reddit
When I was a kid, we inherited a 1975ish Chevy Dually with a 454. Also included was a relatively large slide-in camper. It was in Colorado. We lived in SC. 3mpg the entire trip (1500 miles). Back then you could drive as fast as you wanted and gas was less that 60 cents a gallon. Even so, I remember much complaining about how much it cost to drive that rig. We were even drafting big trucks to help. Basically, fill it up, then start looking for the next gas station.
ChrisF12000@reddit
This isn't the worst but the 3.5 V6 that goes into Lexus cars is not very fuel efficient. My RC averages high teens with majority highway mileage.
Newflyer3@reddit
Do you have the 6 speed AWD or the 8 speed RWD? The 8 speed makes a difference but the V6 has to work in all those cars. V8s got better highway numbers
ChrisF12000@reddit
8 speed RWD
SuprKidd@reddit
My uncle's 01 ram 1500 Hemi, I think he bounces between 8 and 14 mi per gallon. Probably lower now, since he loaded on a camper shell that is too big for his bed size
person1234man@reddit
My parents had a v10 excursion. That thing guzzled so much gas. 11 mpg average. It was like 8 mpg if we were towing the camper
kraken_enrager@reddit
My V6 accord that’s primarily driven in the city gets the same lmao. Id kill to own a v10 tbh.
Over-Stop8694@reddit
Something's got to be wrong for a mid-size sedan to drink that much gas. My Mazda 6 is similar size, and it gets around 33 mpg in mostly city driving. It's a 4 cylinder, but that doesn't account for being 3-4 times more efficient.
4r4r4real@reddit
Something is broken dude. That's the kind of gas mileage I'd get in my V8 Camaro doing canyon runs and constantly at full throttle.
kraken_enrager@reddit
The traffic here is broken lol. There is a 500m stretch that we almost always have to cross that takes at least 14 minutes, and over 20-30 min in peak hours.
That + high AC use due to the extreme heat and humidity is the culprit in our theory.
Also the car is mostly used for short runs like 3-4 km tops, so that also leads to worse figures.
murdock_RL@reddit
That still doesn’t make any sense dude lol what . Traffic and high AC doesn’t magically turn into a v10 gas guzzling machine . Get ur shit checked out asap
kraken_enrager@reddit
It’s been that way since the car was brand new.
objectivePOV@reddit
I hope you change the oil every 3750 miles, and follow the rest of the Severe Conditions Maintenance Schedule. Maybe if you don't something is causing lower mpg?
megacookie@reddit
Insanely slow traffic can actually be worse on fuel than spirited driving, because you're burning fuel but barely moving and it's all stop and start instead of a steady crawl.
4r4r4real@reddit
They said they get 35 mpg in the same conditions in their 4 cylinder car. That v6 accord is broken broken.
megacookie@reddit
Yeah I just saw that. I think it's more shocking an entry level 4 cylinder can get 35 mpg in gridlock traffic, assuming it isn't a hybrid. But agreed that V6 clearly isn't happy with something.
kraken_enrager@reddit
On the other hand, the entry level NA 4cyl sedan I drive gets like 35mpg in the same stretch, and can eke out 50-60 mpg on good highways.
4r4r4real@reddit
If the 4 banger is getting 35 mpg under the same conditions as the V6 gets 8-10... again, somethings broken man lmao
kraken_enrager@reddit
It’s been this way since day one, and it has been meticulously maintained.
Auto start-stop is a saviour in that particular stretch,
rahim770@reddit
Nah i believe you unlike the others, my 3.0 bmw gets better gas mileage than my rsx type s did, hondas overrate their gas mileage
Lawineer@reddit
There’s something with it or you drive when you’re extremely sexually frustrated.
kraken_enrager@reddit
Mostly it’s driven by a chauffeur, and therefore it’s fairly sedate driving, although traffic here is absolutely insane, which is the reason probably.
muchgreaterthanG_O_D@reddit
I feel like if we made a venn diagram of people with chauffeurs and people with accords, there wouldn't be much overlap.
kraken_enrager@reddit
Accord was like a 60k USD car when we bought it. Before being discontinued in my country, it was well over 100k USD.
Although we do tend to keep inconspicuous car due to the nature of my dad’s work.
ad81_@reddit
now I’m really curious? where are you from and what does your dad do? don’t have to be direct if you don’t want just give us some hints :)
the4ner@reddit
In some developing countries an accord is a 50-60k car and a chauffeur is just a few hundred a month. Most accords are probably chauffeur driven in India for example
muchgreaterthanG_O_D@reddit
That insane to think about.
the4ner@reddit
becomes a little easier to comprehend if you redefine chauffeur to just "dude with a driver's license"
tduncs88@reddit
You probably could measure it in idle time at that point instead of miles. Lol.
AwesomeBantha@reddit
I get at least 8 US MPG in city driving with my car in terrible traffic, which is significantly less efficient than a V6 Accord. Are you using US or UK gallons?
kraken_enrager@reddit
US gallon.
3-5 kms per litre.
muchgreaterthanG_O_D@reddit
I feel like if we made a venn diagram of people with chauffeurs and people with accords, there wouldn't be much overlap.
Federal-General-9683@reddit
I owned an 06 accord with the v6 and 6spd manual trans and that thing got an average of 30mpg, I would see higher mpg if it was mostly freeway miles. You must be sitting in some god awful traffic to see those kind of numbers
macgirthy@reddit
HUH, my beat v6 accord can do almost 450miles a tank.
kraken_enrager@reddit
Highway? On the highways we get maybe 10kmpl/21-22mpg, but highways here are poorly maintained, so a lot of braking for potholes and all.
diamondpredator@reddit
my 1.3L RX8 got the same mileage as your Excursion towing a camper. At least you had a V10 and weight as an excuse lol.
tiagojpg@reddit
That’s amazing, how do you even tow nicely without torque?
diamondpredator@reddit
Sorry I meant to say I got the same mileage in my RX8 stock as he did while towing a camper with his V10.
The RX8 had barely enough torque to move me as a driver haha.
tiagojpg@reddit
Haha no worries, that’s impressive too, that thing just chugs gas like there’s no tomorrow!
diamondpredator@reddit
Yep, it was probably the worst car, economically, that a teenager could have bought. But at least it was fun.
rahim770@reddit
I had one too, smiles per mile tho the excursion cant compete😎
diamondpredator@reddit
That is true lol. The 9k rpm redline was amazing.
illigal@reddit
Yup. It’s a celebration whenever the MPG gets to the 2nd digit on mine.
JustADutchFirefighte@reddit
That's almost as much as my 400HP lorry at 50 metric tonnes (110.000lbs)
tiagojpg@reddit
The USian mind can’t comprehend towing over 80.000 lbs.
WorkerAmbitious2072@reddit
That
44 gallon tanks went surprisingly fast but fast was barely over a buck a gallon
Lost-Astronaut-8280@reddit
I get better gas mileage in my Volvo semi truck pulling a full trailer
Adjective_Noun1312@reddit
Fuck, my 38 foot Class A motorhome does better than 8 mpg...
Drzhivago138@reddit
In our previous V10 farm truck, the lie-o-meter on the dash would sometimes show a number lower than the displacement during heavy towing. It also had a 4.30 rear end.
Hammerhandle@reddit
Owned one for 9 years. Can confirm.
titsmuhgeee@reddit
My buddy has a 2022 Ram 1500 Hemi, and it doesn't do much better. He only averages 14-15 mpg unloaded, which is wild when my F-150 gets 21-22mpg.
LordofSpheres@reddit
My 2000 F-350 with 4.56 gears and the 6.8 V10 gets about 14 and change unloaded. Got 13.8mpg unloaded the other day on a 400 mile road trip doing 80mph and with about 1400 lbs in the bed, so...
TheStupidMechanic@reddit
Was going to say our 99’ Durango. It was absolutely terrible even for a v8.
moldy912@reddit
I just got an AMG GT, which somehow has worse efficiency than my 03 RS6, and I just can’t imagine driving something that consistently got <10. People daily drive these too, I still only fill up a couple times a month and even then it’s still like half full.
SchizzleBritches@reddit
There was no hemi in 2001 rams. I own one. It gets 12mpg with the 5.9 Magnum v8. 13mpg on a good day with nothing but highway driving.
TurboSalsa@reddit
It really is phenomenal how much fuel economy has improved in half-ton trucks over the past couple of decades despite making more power than ever. Of course, by then the 5.9 was essentially a 40 year old Chrysler LA design with fuel injection.
SuprKidd@reddit
That's right, I always forget. He's very proud of his hemi, tick and all. How's the magnum? I hear it had decent power too.
SchizzleBritches@reddit
It has good torque. Much less HP than the hemi, and more thirsty.
johntucker78@reddit
Yep had a 2000 Dakota 4x4 with the 5.9, 12mpg on its best day
Thee_Sinner@reddit
My mom had a ‘06 6-speed with the 4.7. It would get 16-17 when driving it hard through the hills….and somehow get 11-14 granny driving around town.
popsicle_of_meat@reddit
My 2003 Silverado 1500HD (6.0, 4L80E, 4.10 gears) gets 10-11mpg around town. We road tripped 1000 miles towing our boat (5000lbs on trailer, but lots of gear in the truck bed) and got 9.5mpg average. Just towed a heavy trailer (probably 10k total cargo with truck bed) into the mountains and got 8.2mpg.
It's lousy on gas, and only has a 26 gallon tank, BUT the engine and trans are among some of the most reliably Chevy every used. Even with the guzzling of gasoline, it would still take tens of thousands of miles to justify spending more on a diesel or something.
Scary_Physics6836@reddit
01 Hemi doesn’t exist
SuprKidd@reddit
That's right, my mistake
hangry2130@reddit
That's a super rare truck considering the hemi wasn't released until 2003 🤣🤣
MrPepeSilviaII@reddit
95 Lamborghini Diablo. 10 mpg combined EPA estimate. 8 city 13 highway. V12 with a 5spd.
sc0lm00@reddit
Viper Truck I believe was 8-13 as well.
handymanshandle@reddit
If I’m remembering correctly, even that is optimistic for a Ram SRT-10. All the more reason for me to be interested in it, but it’s pathetically poor. Guess you can’t get too mad when you shove a performance V10 with no semblance of fuel economy into a pickup truck.
PCho222@reddit
With heads/cam/tune I average 18 highway and 13-14 combined with hooning. It isn't that bad actually, but the quad cab probably gets way worse.
Specialist-Size9368@reddit
Nothing to do with it being a truck. Everything to do with it being an old 8L performance engine. My viper averages, 8 mpg. Theoretically it is 11 city 20 highway, but you have to baby it for that.
grass_hut_shitter@reddit
How did Toyota make a i6 SUV that is equal to a V12 sports car
Ness341@reddit
I love how comical this actually is. Then the ridiculous maintenance schedule to keep the car on the road that you are constantly filling up. There couldn't have been much room for more than a 10gallon fuel tank either considering my..Fiero which everyone clones into a lambofiero doesn't change much in dimensions if done properly
Bonerchill@reddit
The 1995 Diablo has a fuel capacity of 100L, or 26.4 gallons.
The Fiero kit cars are… quite far from the real thing underneath.
mini4x@reddit
You mean a 2.5L Iron Duke doesn't pull like a V12 ?
Hogwash..
Ness341@reddit
Epic. Thank you for the info. The kit cars if done completely correct, cost more than just buying a Lamborghini in the end anyways
Bonerchill@reddit
There is no correct way to turn a Fiero into a Diablo.
The Fiero has far superior ergonomics.
throwawaycasun4997@reddit
A brief chime in from someone who used to do these conversions. You had to cut the Fiero in half, right behind the firewall, then stretch it 13”.
We had a hookup to get the Lamborghini lights and badges, and on the fixed-headlight models you just used 300ZX headlights (that’s all Lamborghini did, just with a little blackout along the top over the “NISSAN MOTOR CORP” lettering).
Comptech made the wheels, and they’re expensive! Although it wasn’t at all like the OEM setup, we’d use a steering column & combo switch out of a 3rd gen Supra, which allowed tilting and telescoping of the steering wheel, and provided familiar controls for the wipers and headlights.
And yes, by the time we were done it was at least $50k, and that was 25 years ago. It would be pointless nowadays.
Jedi_Joker@reddit
I'm gonna guess the LM002 had even worse stats, and might be the worst of all time for a street vehicle.
FalloutRip@reddit
LM002 is listed somewhere between 5-6mpg, though some claim a whopping 8mpg.
moldy912@reddit
At some point you have to just think of it as dollars per mile lol
Atompunk78@reddit
Some tanks and such are road legal, the Abrams for example gets 0.5mph lol
Need4Speeeeeed@reddit
That's when you drive like an EPA test. When you get something with a V12, you're going to be accelerating a little faster than that.
desirox@reddit
Might as well have a hole in the fuel tank lmao
kid50cal@reddit
My 2008 RX350 with the 2GR-FE is BAD. 13L/100 (18MPG) no matter what kind of driving I put it through. At least it refuses to die
Newflyer3@reddit
All RX350s are bad lol. I have a ‘12, first MY that was ‘fine’ with regular fuel. Can’t get under 10L/100kms with it on highway. I think it’s just heavy lol
Darktrooper007@reddit
Auto und Sport tested a Lincoln Continental Mark V (1977-1979) with the 460 V8 and found that consumed it 33.3 L/100km (~7 mpg) overall, and estimated ~3.5 mpg under full acceleration. That's definitely a top contender.
LettuceC@reddit
Not the worse, but I had a Golf R that rarely saw 30MPG on the highway. It was never horrible, but pretty bad for a 2.0L 4-cylinder.
AllGravyNoBiscuits@reddit
I don’t think there are any hot hatches pulling numbers above 30 except the GTI
handymanshandle@reddit
How often did it see over 75mph? Most of these sport compacts are reasonably efficient if you don’t look at the throttle wrong, but speaking from experience, they get thirsty when you want to use that power.
thisisinput@reddit
I'll get that if I keep it below 75mph. I don't mind that kind of fuel economy when I'm making well over 300hp lol.
LiLGhettoSmurf@reddit
My 2.0 Stinger gets 28-29mpg highway with only 200ish horsepower lol
turniphat@reddit
I had a Mazda B2200, I'm unsure what the actual numbers were, but I'm pretty sure it was worse than a modern fullsize pickup. Worse than the Ranger I replaced it with. Insane for a 85 hp mini truck. I think something was seriously wrong with it, but it wasn't worth getting it fixed.
Gregarious_Raconteur@reddit
Weren't the mazda B's just rebadged rangers anyway?
turniphat@reddit
Only from the B4000 onward.
Imaginary_Act_3956@reddit
Ioniq 5 owner spotted......I really love that car.
turniphat@reddit
If only it had a rear wiper!
InsertBluescreenHere@reddit
Friend had a 98 3.0 4x4 auto ranger. 18 no matter how or where he drove.
RabidBlackSquirrel@reddit
Good old 3.slow. Got neither the power of the 4.0 or the slightly better MPG of the 4 banger.
Damn if they aren't invincible though, there is that. Mine has taken all manner of abuse that should have killed it by now, but she just don't care.
slicknyc@reddit
2011 evo x 100% stock - 13mpg
TheBlackMare@reddit
That's absurdly bad for stock, iirc those early year Evo X's came with a bad tune from factory, so might want to look at getting a tune
SerratedSilver@reddit
Yeah I have a 2015 Evo X that is functionally stock (on coilovers) and the advertised MPG is 17/23. I can get up to 25 putzing around town on my work commute, though I never get above 40mph during that.
dkobayashi@reddit
Pretty bad considering the STI gets slightly over 20
Tmaann@reddit
My exact thought. I average 21 in my hatch, below 15 for an Evo of the same year is absurd
Gregarious_Raconteur@reddit
I only really manage to get about 22mpg combined in my '05 2.4L accord. Not awful, all things considered, but not great for a 4 cyl only making around 160hp
GruntledV8Fanboy@reddit
My 95 F-350 with a 460, seems to average 8-10mpg loaded or empty
Emyxn@reddit
Suzuki Jimmy, Daihatsu Terios, Lada Niva. For such a small car even in 2wd mode the inefficiency is extremely noticeable.
ClaudeVS@reddit
My 22r 4Runner gets 14.5L/100km
count_nuggula@reddit
That’s wild that a four cylinder bronco gets that bad of mileage
peakdecline@reddit
It's a literal brick that's raised off the ground. Everything about the design is bad for MPG.
Honestly the MPG I get in my Bronco, I have the 2.7L V6 Ecoboost and also get about 18MPG on 35" tires, seems impressive compared to the 22-23MPG I got in my Golf R.
Both are bad compared to the 26-27MPG I got in my Gladiator but that was a diesel.
BootyWizardAV@reddit
yeah i have a 2 door sasquatch and average about 17-18mpg. I think the max i've hit is a 21mpg average on a road trip lol, felt like i was driving a prius atp
The_Crazy_Swede@reddit
And all of those are bad compared to my 2015 BMW 530d wagon where I can quite easily get close to 50 mpg and even ger close to 60mpg when really hypermiling it.
Sure, it's a diesel and that's kinda cheating but it's still pretty impressive for a big wagon with a 3 liter inline 6.
No_Skirt_6002@reddit
Diesels are just crazy efficient. I will never forgive VW for effectively killing off the non-HD truck diesel market in the US and severely harming it in Europe, when from an engineering and environmental perspective turbodiesels are just so superior to gasoline, especially with the net-zero carbon R99 diesel that’s on sale in CA these days.
Time-Maintenance2165@reddit
I don't think it's fair to blame VW for that. It's more that it turns out you can't really meet the US emissions standards for diesels. It's one of the unusual occasions where the US is more strict than Europe.
They might be better from a GHG perspective, but not from an air quality/public health perspective.
4r4r4real@reddit
Correct me if I'm wrong, but they absolutely could meet emissions standards... they passed the tests after all. It just hurt MPG, and they wanted to advertise bigger MPG numbers, so they didn't use the emissions compliant tune on production cars.
FentmaxxerActual@reddit
I believe they can meet the US standards with little issue, but the only way to do so is with a DPF/SCR system system and the US market historically hates filling up DEF tanks.
anarchyx34@reddit
Gasoline Hybrid made diesels effectively pointless. By that time “normal” cars were available as hybrids and had proven reliability.
tiagojpg@reddit
Debatable (although I’m heavily diesel-biased). A gasoline hybrid will get worse fuel economy on long drives, no matter how you spin things.
Mercedes had a C-class diesel hybrid, Citroen also had a DS5, those worked wooooonders. You can still get very very far on diesel and use the electric mode in the city.
anarchyx34@reddit
Yes it’s true that highway economy isn’t hybrid’s strong suit but the combined economy should be somewhat similar. I think the situation is different in Europe where diesel was already commonplace. In the US it’s a different story because owning a diesel car here means limited fuel availability (not all stations have diesel), higher fuel costs that eat up any money savings from higher mpg, and limited repair options aside from the dealer. Hybrids just make more sense here.
tiagojpg@reddit
Yes, in Europe it’s a different story, with some countries even having diesel cheaper than gasoline. That’s why I said it’s debatable. It’s the case here in Portugal, 10-20 cents/L cheaper than gas. Also, take a look on Marketplace at used cars and 80-90% of 10+ y/o cars are diesel. They just made sense!
The big demand in diesels from the 90s through the 2010s set up a big offer of diesel mechanics, making the labor cheaper from competition. Most usual cars and diesel engines on the road are
LowSkyOrbit@reddit
Only VW took so much publicity, and it was Mercedes-Benz who snitched on them because they were sharing a platform.
Everyone was and is still cheating through ECU coding and using inline 4 turbo charged engines where true power delivery can be controlled at higher rev points. Think about it. 25 years ago few cars had turbos unless they were a sport model or couldn't fit a V6. Then new regulations came down and the V6 all but disappeared, and V8 engines are shutting down cylinders to get better mileage.
Meanwhile pickups and SUVs don't have the same restrictions and have only gotten bigger and bigger and we don't see any improvements in MPG.
IrlArizonaBoi@reddit
Yeah the Turbo engines don't get great real world mileage a lot of the time. I had a wrangler with the turbo 4 and it got 15mpg. Worse than the 5th gen 4runner which has a 4.0l V6 and yes the make the same power.
Once the turbo spools they chug gas.
thiccancer@reddit
Yep, absolutely.
People say that a turbo improves fuel economy, which can be true at very low power and rpm, but once you start making power that goes straight out of the window.
What does a turbo do? It stuffs more air in the engine. Why would you want more air in the engine? To burn more fuel. What do you get when you burn more fuel? ...Worse fuel economy. And more power, of course.
In the end, a turbo is effectively a displacement multiplier. If you have a 1.5l engine but you feed it air at 2x ambient pressure, you effectively have as much air+fuel in it as a 3l engine, so you can make the power of a 3l engine.
The reason it can be efficient is because at low/no boost it can still functionally be a 1.5l, albeit with more exhaust restriction.
IrlArizonaBoi@reddit
Yep exactly.
AbbreviationsKnown24@reddit
I had a wrangler with the turbo 4 and got ~20mpg no matter how I drove it. City/freeway only changed it by about +-1MPG. Not too bad compared to the old ones.
AbbreviationsKnown24@reddit
There is no evidence Mercedes Benz was involved in the first diesel scandal. The ICCT was doing some testing of VW diesels and attached some equipment to monitor while they drove around. They noticed they had different emissions when driving than on the rollers and eventually VW was forced to admit they were cheating.
MPG has improved CUVs drastically over the last couple decades. Even SUVs have gotten much better.
Yankee831@reddit
There’s been massive improvements in full size truck mpg. Hell the F150 gets low to mid 20’s and runs on a turbocharged 2.7L 4cyl built like a diesel. Ram has hybrid trucks, several EV trucks out meanwhile Ford has Hybrid trucks and GM/Toyota have direct injection small displacement engines precisely for economy. Additionally the Maverick gets 35+ mpg.
dsonger20@reddit
Didn’t Mercedes snitch for everyone for immunity?
EVERYONE was doing it.
Time-Maintenance2165@reddit
Yes, but doing that negates the benefit of diesel, so they may as well just go back to gas.
an_actual_lawyer@reddit
They can meet emissions, they just have to use DEF and that adds about a $1000 in cost and most consumers don't want to mess with it.
maveric101@reddit
And many that do "mess with it" just remove it...
stormin1970@reddit
All of the German companies did it. Mercedes got caught first but they made an example of VW.
hi_im_bored13@reddit
Except BMW!
JoeM5952@reddit
I have an A6 with the 3.0 TDI and its in the high 40s when trying. Normally about 80-85 on the freeway i get mid thirties mpg, love the power i get from it also.
The_Crazy_Swede@reddit
I have a feeling that you have awd on that one right? Mine is just rwd and I get in the high 40s doing 130km/h
JoeM5952@reddit
Yea i have awd
The_Crazy_Swede@reddit
Yea, that makes perfect sense that mine does quite a lot better on fuel, fewer wheels to power means fewer drivetrain losses.
maveric101@reddit
figurative brick
im_super_excited@reddit
FWIW I had a Fusion Sport. 2.7L Ecoboost.
Same engine, I believe, as you.
It averaged around 20 MPG on the stock 19"s
Im_A_Decent_Man@reddit
The 2.7 is a v6 twin turbo the 2.3 is an i4 single turbo
InsertBluescreenHere@reddit
Right? Its a tool shed with wheels
FirstTimeCaller101@reddit
I have a 1996 bronco with the 351w. I get about 12-13 mpg. I always tell people with the shell on it feels like driving around in a cave.
InsertBluescreenHere@reddit
lmao driving the tj wranglers with a hard top is like riding around in an igloo cooler sitting on a radio flyer wagon
mini4x@reddit
The Wrangler is about as bad, rated 17/23 from the PentaStar V6 which probably has the same power as the EcoBoost.
SaltyDalt@reddit
I didn’t realize the Golf R was that much worse on fuel than the GTI. I regularly get 34-35 on the highway… but if I really go ham on a back road I can get down to 22. Avg like 27.
Yankee831@reddit
Right! My 4cyl Element gets 18-22 and is way way less capable.
4thAndLong@reddit
18 is still good IMO for what it is. I average in the low 13’s in my Raptor.
gohdnuorg@reddit
M F150 gets better than your Golf R.
count_nuggula@reddit
Oh I get it. It’s dragging around a probably close to 4K cinder block around
4R4nd0mR3dd1t0r@reddit
My Subaru is worse, mind you it is a 20 year old modified turbo Subaru Legacy but my lifetime average fuel economy is like 16 mpg.
Im_A_Decent_Man@reddit
Ita a turbo 4 that's pushing almost a little under 300 and over 350 ftlbs of torque
penguinchem13@reddit
I have the same car and get 22 mpg
count_nuggula@reddit
Let’s be real. We may be speaking numbers in this thread but we aren’t saying how hard we drive
Skensis@reddit
Yeah, without knowing how people drive, comparing mpg is sort of a silly game at best.
Rugged_Turtle@reddit
My ‘96 DeVille Northstar wound get 23.5 and I did a lot of local driving lol
jtbis@reddit
The 4 cylinder has adequate power, but it’s in boost a lot to keep that massive brick moving, which tanks economy.
Time-Maintenance2165@reddit
Eh, that's not correct. Being in boost is better for efficiency not worse.
It might still get poor mpg, but it's not because of low engine efficiency and being in boost.
thiccancer@reddit
Being in boost is better for efficiency for that specific engine when measuring fuel used per horsepower made, not necessarily mpg.
Time-Maintenance2165@reddit
Yes that's correct and in alignment with what I said.
ubermorph@reddit
Being in boost is worse for efficiency because you need to run a richer AFR.
Pitiful-Mobile-3144@reddit
It’s gotta be the tires. My 4cyl Wrangler averages about 26mpg on the stock tire size, I expected the Bronco to be similar. Could be they upgraded to 35” mud terrain tires
unique_ptr@reddit
I'm on the stock non-Sasquatch 33" A/T tires and I'm getting ~17-18 mpg on the 4 cylinder with the 7 speed, all city driving (read: small rural city), and I am not throttle shy.
I've only had it for a couple of months though and realized yesterday I was probably doing too much cruising in 4th gear instead of 5th. That got me up to about 20 mpg, we'll see if it holds.
... not that I give a shit, mind you. I work from home so I usually only have to fill up once a month, I'm a big smiles-per-gallon kinda guy.
Carmanmij@reddit
Yeah, start and stop driving like that can tank the economy. I have a manual GTI and it gets awesome mileage on long highway trips but in the short trip city driving I normally do, it's like in the low to mid 20s. A heavy brick shaped object with a slightly larger four banger would make sense to get a little less.
Unrelated, how do you like the manual in the bronco?
unique_ptr@reddit
I love the manual! It's really easy to drive, and plenty of fun for a big fat heavy truck, much to my surprise. I'm coming off a manual Ecoboost Mustang, and a manual Fiesta ST before that, so it's quite a change in terms of the driving dynamics I'm used to but it still feels really nice rowing your own in something this size. The Badlands with the manual has a higher final drive ratio than the manual version of the lower trims, so that helps it feel a little more peppy I think as well as trying to offset the extra weight of the steel underbody plates etc.
Off-road I'd rather have an automatic to be honest, but it could be that I'm just not really used to driving off-road with a stick just yet. All in all I've got no regrets!

Crazy bc I average 16-17 in my 2012 V8 Lexus after 40 minutes on the highway.
Stlrfan152@reddit
I think the ecoboost hp and torque is similar to that era lexus v8. Its crazy how much power some of the new turbo motors put out.
Stlrfan152@reddit
Its mostly because they are geared very low, on top of having bigger heavier tires. My manual bronco has 4.70s. The f150s can be as high as 3.31. Those are the ones that get in the 20s for mpgs.
count_nuggula@reddit
I imagine the aerodynamics of a bronco aren’t doing it any favors
SameConnection404@reddit
I'm surprised OP is only getting 18 mpg. I've averaged 21 mpg in my Bronco with the manual over the last 9 months of mixed freeway and city driving in a stock 4 door badlands trim. I get up to 23 mpg on 55-65 mph state highways.
Recent_Permit2653@reddit
My worst was definitely my ‘99 Dodge RamVan. It was a conversion van, 360 Magnum. It got 12-13mpg normally, with me driving conservatively (there really wasn’t any other way to drive it, TBH). I never eked out more than 15mpg on the freeway.
As a college student, I liked the idea of a van with curtains and a fold down bed in the back lol, I even had an inverter and I could hook my PS2 to the TV. But the reality was that it just didn’t have many redeeming values, and I had it around the time in the early 2000s when fuel started to touch $3/gal. It had been under $2/gal for years where I am, so the 50% increase was…a shock. It would be like your $3 fuel now being $4.50 in a month. That was all the push I needed to make a trade.

StepsOnLEGO@reddit
This is hilariously bad when you realize the gas tank size was already considered too small at 21 gallons. Getting 250 miles of range on one fill-up would get old real quick.
TurboSalsa@reddit
It does.
I had an E90 M3 and even though it had that wonderful, thirsty, high-revving V8 it still had the same sized tank as the 325i. I sold it because I was doing mostly city driving and felt like I spent all my free time at the gas station.
Skensis@reddit
Yup! My M2 has the same tank as the 2 series, which sucks when you get like 70% of the mpgs.
250 miles is like average, 300 if I'm doing lot of highway.
200 if I'm having some fun... Less if I'm having lots.
DrZedex@reddit
As a grc owner...yeah can confirm 300 miles isn't enough for me.
notbuttkrabs@reddit
For reference my 92 FJ80 would get around 240/250 miles out of a tank. The only redeeming factor was that it was so damn slow, driving that far took all damn day and you didnt feel like you were constantly filling up.
TurboSalsa@reddit
That is abysmal, but a lot of idling time in the carpool line might explain that.
My 2013 EcoBoost F150 got about 13 mpg in bumper to bumper traffic but it also had a 36 gallon tank.
mr_bots@reddit
Turns out getting an almost 3 ton brick up to speed takes a lot of fuel regardless of what engine is under the hood.
Slimy_Shart_Socket@reddit
There's gotta be something wrong. They use that Engine in the Tundra but more power and they get like 14-15mpg. Only way to be competitive in the half ton market.

This is what I don’t understand, aside from the shitty administration currently in power, who approves this? Also, not intending to be rude to owners, I understand you can afford the gas, but why do you want to fill up so often? The new Grand Wagoneer sits about on par with this too and all I think about is everyone selling off their Excursions and H2s 20 years ago when gas went up.
Rabo_McDongleberry@reddit
Anecdotal. But not everyone drives a lot. My aunt has her GX from a decade ago which is also shit MPG. But she don't drive much. She doesn't think about mpg.

I don’t drive much and every 2-3 weeks used to feel way too much with my old 4Runner. Now with my Prius it’s every 2 months which I’m okay with.
unsaltedbutter@reddit
This is kind of my situation, I have a Grand Cherokee that gets 18 at best. But I got 3 cars so it's not like I drive it that much, so I don't really care about the mpg.
HuskerGamer402@reddit
This is a vehicle buyer I think I can more understand, but still can’t believe people just don’t care about fuel economy in some way no matter how old a person is. I think I understand the enthusiast mindset more because they are buying vehicles for specific reasons like speed or off roading, etcetera.
Rabo_McDongleberry@reddit
Lol. I'm pretty sure I've heard her complain about how much it costs to get gas. But she gets gas like once or twice a month. So it's not top of mind. When I was driving a lot for work I was filling up like 3 times a week in cars that got 30-35 mpg.

1GR 4runner. For its size, it makes power like a 4 cylinder but drinks like a v8. I've never gotten better than 14L/100km in town and highway mileage isn't much better at 13L/100km.

jmardoxie@reddit
My 63 Buick LeSabre with the dynaflow transmission. You could take it around the block and see the gas gauge drop. At least gas was 30 cents a gallon.
r_golan_trevize@reddit
For the uniformed reader, the Dynaflow was basically a one speed transmission in practice. The driver could manually engage a low gear but in drive, there was no shifting, it just stayed locked in high with the torque converter doing all the work. It really put the slush in slush box.
tiagojpg@reddit
So like a torque converter-CVT combo? How the heck does that come about
r_golan_trevize@reddit
Sort of… a torque converter is a kind of CVT in itself, just a really inefficient CVT.
The transmission had a normal planetary gear set like most any other traditional automatic but it stayed locked in direct drive 1:1 “high” gear configuration and the torque multiplication of the torque converter (3:1 in this case) took care of what the lower gears in a normal transmission provide.
tiagojpg@reddit
That’s interesting, thanks. So having such a high final drive could make it go at really low RPM at highway speeds right? I can’t imagine going up hills and steep mountain roads in that thing.
r_golan_trevize@reddit
This video might help: https://youtu.be/leCEmJA0WsI
A 3 speed manual transmission of the time might have gear ratios of 3:1 in first, 2:1 in second and 1:1 in third. A torque converter with a 3:1 torque multiplication ratio covers that whole range but instead of metal gears, it squishy liquid and it’s continuous depending on engine RPM, road speed and load. At full throttle from a standstill, the torque converter is acting like a 3:1 first gear, at light throttle cruising at speed on level ground, it’s acting like a 1:1 top gear, if you goose the throttle, engine RPMs go up and torque multiplication goes up and it acts like you have an infinity variable second gear.
It’s be basically the same as any other vehicle with a 3:1 spread between their lowest and highest gear except it’d be exceptionally smooth and a bit more sluggish and less fuel efficient as a torque converter with a big multiplication ratio like that is pretty inefficient (converters for normal autos with 3+ gears have a tighter spread for more acceptable efficiency and modern converters are even tighter and then we started adding lockup clutches to them to lock the input and output together to eliminate fluid losses when the driving conditions don't require the torque multiplication of the torque converter(side side note: for people wondering why the 4-speed auto persisted for so long, a 4-speed auto with a lockup converter was basically like a 6-speed transmission: the torque multiplication effect in takeoff was like an extra gear below 1st gear and the lockup converter was like an extra on top of 4th)).
tiagojpg@reddit
That’s awesome, thank you for the detailed comment. I’ve always wondered how 4sp autos were so common for so long, since they (and autos in general) were always hated where I live - steep, straight, curvy mountain roads. I thought, either the gears were too short for it to not be screaming at 60mph or too long that a simple hill start would burn the clutch. The lockup makes sense.

caverunner17@reddit
I think that's one of the things that people forget about with those big Toyota engines. Sure they'll last forever, but at $3/gallon, you'll be spending $11k more on gas over 200k miles over something that gets even 4MPG better.
AwesomeBantha@reddit
The LX470 “requires” premium but it’s one of those cases where it actually doesn’t and you’re fine just putting regular gas in.
I bought mine because, as a kid, I saw them all over Cambodia getting filled with whatever fluid some random 8 year old on the side of the road had in their oil drum.
Previous owner always used 87, I always use 87, except when I was 10,000 feet above sea level in Colorado this summer and filled it with 91, but that was mostly just because 91 was ethanol free. 315k miles and no knocking or other engine issues.

My buddy had a 1978 K-15 Pickup on 35" tires with a smog choked 350. He got 8-11 mpg.
As far as the worst fuel economy for anything ever sold, I would guess some 1970s smog choked, big block, 1 Ton 4wd pickup. Pick your poison, between the 440, 454, or 460, add a 3 speed auto, 4x4, extra weight, and miles of vaccum hoses and you have the perfect combo for truly bad fuel economy.

I owned a couple of 1st gen, 12A powered Rx-7's back in the late eighties. Probably no more than 2400 lbs with a sizzling 101 hp from the factory. Both were 5-speeds. If I remember right, I was happy if I got 16 mpg (US). They were pretty quick little cars, though.

In terms of surprisingly bad fuel economy, I had a Smart Car as a loaner for a weekend about a decade ago. It was by far the worst car I've ever driven. The one redeeming quality should have been fuel economy, but it wasn't even that good.
ahorrribledrummer@reddit
They are truly bad cars. In the US, I see no reason anyone would want one.
Terrh@reddit
In Canada they all came diesel and got like 80mpg.
Eastern_Yam@reddit
Yeah a family member bought a 2005 diesel when they first came to Canada. It could get 70-80 mpg (UK/Canada gallons) but was incredibly slow, about 20 seconds 0-60.
The second gen gas models were considerably thirstier; one could get equivalent fuel consumption in most 4 or 5 seat subcompacts which were much more practical.
rugbyj@reddit
Endd your sentence there. I live in the UK and there's plenty of love for it because the folks driving are never getting above 60mph and largely pottering around towns/cities.
The EV version though was shocking. My colleague owned one and in our mild winters the battery made a ~30 mile commute a genuine concern.
aaaantoine@reddit
Former long time Smart car owner here.
It's a love or hate vehicle. Originally I was going to suggest it's a halo car but that would imply it's an aspirational purchase.
But what I'm trying to say is, there's a certain class of vehicle that you see on the road and say, "who in their right mind would drive that shit?" Me. I'm the guy. I knew it was ridiculous in a lot of ways but it was cheap and it was exactly as much car as I needed.
After almost 10 years the transmission died. To replace it I bought something a little bigger with a couple more seats. Much more practical in every way. The Smart is decidedly less a car and more a street legal go kart.

It was so bad. Ride was awful, road/tire/engine noise was awful, transmission was awful, it was cramped, it was ugly, and I feel like it would have been beaten in fuel economy by any other small hatchback that also beat it in every other area.
dm_me_cute_puppers@reddit
That transmission.. was sooo bad. It amazes me they sold them after people took a test ride in one.
pr0grammer@reddit
Street parking in big cities. If you're only ever moving around the city, the size alone is a selling point. I lived in Brooklyn for a year, and parking my Camry was really annoying -- if I'd had to drive it more than once a week or so, I'd have probably looked into selling it for a city car... If good ones existed over here. There are way better options in that class that weren't sold over here.
FixTheWisz@reddit
They make a lot of sense in areas where parking is dense. I live in a very touristy spot where it’s not uncommon for people in normal sedans to search for 45+ minutes in the weekends and holidays. Only Smart cars, single-row golf carts, and motorcycles are immune to this search.
mini4x@reddit
My Uncle test drove one, he ended up buying a Honda Fit, cheaper, better MPG, it had a back seat too, and decent cargo space.

I remember when C&d first reviewed a US model. It happened to be the same month (or very nearly) as the US spec Elise.
The Elise was better in every objective measure, including mpg haha. Basically the same msrp.
r_golan_trevize@reddit
The Smart Car’s raison d'etre was maneuvering and parking in cramped cities, not economy. In the US, they’re dumb cars anywhere outside of some east coast city downtown where the streets were laid in the 1600s.

I never actually filled that thing up twice in a row to measure the fuel mileage. I accepted that it was probably around 8 or 9 mpg and just threw $50 in the tank whenever I needed to use it. Never took it on any drives long enough to justify filling it up.

Any 4.0 v6 from 2000-2012. My ford explorer got like 13mpg city with the way I was driving when I was younger. The xterra was actually discontinued because of how inefficient the vq40 was
ghunt81@reddit
4.0, power of a V6 with the fuel economy of a V8. I had an '09 Ranger for a couple years and I'm pretty sure it got worse mileage than my 5.0 F150 that I traded it in for.
bluisbluewastaken@reddit
Actually, when the 4.0 SOHC v6 was introduced, the other option for an explorer was the ford Windsor 5.0 v8 found in the fox body mustang and some 90s f150s (I think it was in the 9th gen). This 5.0 made the same power (with slightly more torque) and got the same gas mileage. AND! The explorers with the 5.0 were sold only with AWD so they had a parasitic power drain leading to “worse” mileage that matched that of the 4.0 v6.
bluisbluewastaken@reddit
I drive an 01 Explorer Sport with the 4.0 in it and I can confirm this. Living in WA, the hills kill my city mileage but if I drive nice I can get roughly 13 city. On the highway I get roughly 20. Fun fact about the v8s offered in explorers from 2001 and back, they make the same power (only slightly more torque) and get the same gas mileage. And then, if you put headers on that v8, it made better mileage (by like 5 mpg) and made upwards of 10-15hp and ft-lbs extra. Tbf those headers cost like $1500
velociraptorfarmer@reddit
What's crazy is that they really didn't do all that much to the VQ40 to make the VQ38, just gave it direct injection.
Going from the 5 speed to the 9 speed is what gave the fuel economy such a bump. I'm lifted on E-load 33s, and I'm getting around 16-17 city.
q0vneob@reddit

I've heard countless stories of diesel truck owners getting 8-9mpg factory, and then getting 18-27mpg after deleting all the emissions equipment. Tell me which is greener....
Adjective_Noun1312@reddit
Depends how we're quantifying it. No emissions system, less CO2 which is better for global warming but high NOx and SO2 which cause smog and acid rain, and the soot is carcinogenic. Or keep the emissions stuff, better for smog and acid rain and cancer but burns more fuel which increases the carbon footprint.
Personally I think some combination depending on use would be the best choice. Diesel burners in the city need emissions systems for sure, but farm equipment and highway trucks don't IMO.
Drzhivago138@reddit
Whichever one puts out less particulate matter and carcinogens.
EZKTurbo@reddit
Agreed, the one that burns less hydrocarbons.
Drzhivago138@reddit

Conscious-Food-9828@reddit
Well there's more to emissions than just CO2. A big one is emissions in cities, which are tightly regulated because air tends to linger and people breath it in. NOx emissions are the big thing that causes emissions problems for diesels

It was a V10 Ford F550 with a hydraulic crane and a huge boxcube on the back. Used by a cable company. I did a bunch of service work to it which requires disconnecting the battery and that reset the fuel economy counter. I then drove it like 30km in the city, it was 74L/100km after I gave it back.

Hummer H2 company vehicle I had to drive got about 9mpg at 68mph with cruise control on and the tires slightly over-inflated.

I had a rental jeep wrangler Rubicon once, the one with the big all terrain tires. Jesus, as a replacement for my vw alltrack I was filling it literally 5x as often. I ended up swapping it for a smaller car I just couldn't take it. I don't know how anyone owns one of those as a daily. You get nothing in return for the extra fuel cost.

My 1997 Ford Thunderbird with the 4.8L V8 would get about 6-8mpg city. It was my first car, so I never took it on the highways, just school and work. The absolute slowest car I've ever driven as well. Dad bought it for $2200 in 2011, I put $300 into the collapsing suspension, then I sold it for $1700 after like 8 months. I cannot express to you what a worthless piece of crap that thing was.
unjuseabble@reddit
Relative to the what one would assume my current Mazda. Uses some average of 9L/100km.
Its not geared very well for highway, 3k rpm at 100kph/62mph but still I think there is something wrong with the engine lol. But it keeps chuggin along, and I paid 650 for it and other expenses are so low I dont really care about the fuel consumption enough to start diagnosing or throwing parts at it.
freddurstsnurstburst@reddit
Surprisingly shitty for a 323 actually. I would've expected maybe 7l/100km at most. But hey, it's a cheap 90s shitbox with a lot of charm. My father had the 323f with the turbo BP engine for a while. Thing was an absolute demon. Turbo hatchback with pop-up headlights. Fuel economy was actually decent from what I know. Same engine as the NA MX-5 but with a turbine slapped on. Reliable as hell.
unjuseabble@reddit
It is horrendously shitty. Ive had Opels with around the same specs and they use some 6-7L/100km, so I got good reference to know something is propably up with the Mazda. The 323 I got has been pretty neglegted and low key continues to be... Shes gonna need some patching for next MOT inspection.
And yeah the old 323 turbos are cool as hell all around. Appearance is one of the reasons I aquired my sedan, though the hatchback and 323f are also neat. Mine has the 1.6 16v sohc engine. Produces 90 horses, but its enough to get around in a car that light. Also fires right up every time, even after sitting for longer periods.

Probably my F-Type. I usually get 10-15 mpg, hit closer to 19 when cruising steady on a highway. Drops into single digits anytime you accelerate more than 10mph in a go. Not unexpected at all, but notably worse than any of our other cars.
EpicHuggles@reddit
The worst offenders are the Hellcats and the GT500. Not simply because they only get like ~10 MPG on a good day, but they only have like 15 gallon tanks. Only getting ~125 miles on a tank of gas is pretty crazy.

I had two serious gas guzzlers, both from the 70s. My worst was a 1976 Dodge Powerwagon. It would get 9 mpg in the city and about 12 on the highway, up to 55 mph that is. After 55, the mileage started dipping and if you could get it to 70, it would be around 8 mpg.
My second was a 1974 Ford LTD with a 460 ci V8. It was amazing how little power this thing had. But it sure did suck the gas!

Do cars like this even exist in America? I don't think I have ever seen an American talk about their cars MPG and say anything more than about 20.

I had a 2005 Ram SRT-10. It was a quad cab, so it had a four speed automatic. I averaged around 10 MPG.

Old Nissan armadas with the 5.6 actually got worse gas mileage unladen than the trucks did while towing a small trailer. What you eat in fuel costs you will save in maintenance, though. I've seen those things go for 300k+ miles with only basic maintenance
jackyboy491@reddit
averaged 9-12mpg in a four hour Escalade-V trip

Nissan Frontier v6. Worst mpg of any truck I’ve had, also the slowest. Hated that truck so much I sold it at a loss two months after buying.

Viper
12 mpg on a good day cruising at 2000 rpm or less in 6th on the highway. As low as 5-6 around town. It’s not stock though it’s built motor heads/cam around 700 at the wheels
thatoneguynoah88@reddit
GMC Denali or any 6.2 V8 gm vehicle. I get 13 mixed city highway (6L80) not driving aggressively. Extra salt on the wound is premium being the recommended fuel
DeTomato_@reddit
Toyota Innova 2.0L I4 gets 14 l/100 km or around 17 mpg combined. Fuel economy of a V8, power of a 3-cylinder.
ryanissognar@reddit
That first gen Raptor was sub 10mpg wasnt it? Just a gasoline black hole...
torrisi13@reddit
Currently have a ‘09 Mercedes G55 with a smaller pulley. My average over 40k miles has been 10.9 mpg
pdibiase3@reddit
I was towing with a 5.4 F250 a few weeks back and swore I had some sorta hole in the gas tank. We got about 5.8 MPG towing a Miata and a half on a bobcat trailer.
skearedbanana@reddit
75 Ford F150 390 automatic 7 mpg. I could pass anything except a gas station.
skinnypeen762@reddit
I have a 1974 Thunderbird and it will do 55L/100km in town with short trips and can manage 18.8L/100km on the highway at a steady 100kph. It has a 7.5L engine with a 3 speed automatic.
exceptional_cabbage@reddit
2005 V8 Touareg. When sold was rated for 12 city, 17 hwy, 14mpg combined.
Best part is its dietary requirement for premium.
NCSUGrad2012@reddit
I get maybe 22 on the highway lol
DerangedGinger@reddit
My PT Cruiser wasn't the worst, but the EPA number were a lie and it should have NEVER qualified under the "cash for clunkers" program as an eligible new vehicle.
No_Skirt_6002@reddit
‘01 Hyundai XG300. For a three month period last winter it was averaging 8.7 miles per gallon. Bought a code reader and it threw up evaporator codes, so I deleted them and the mileage went back up to what it was before… a still underwhelming 16-17 miles per gallon.
slyfox7187@reddit
2001 dodge durango. Could get around 200 miles out of the 25 gallon tank if I was only on the highway. I'd be lucky to break 150 in the city.
GeneralCommand4459@reddit
Chrysler Neon. But not sure if was the small fuel tank or actual efficiency. It was the Euro spec which I believe was shorter than US model and perhaps had a smaller fuel tank.
420_E-SportsMasta@reddit
The Dakota 5.9 RTs would get something like a combined 13 mpg, hilariously bad even for the early 2000s trucks, granted it wasn’t meant to do truck things necessarily but it was still amusing
TookEverything@reddit
14 MPG in an RCF driving normally. 17 on the freeway. I think my 09 RAM 1500 got better mileage.
Ness341@reddit
2006 Pontiac G6 GTP, HARD TOP CONVERTIBLE.
With a 3.9L v6, 4speed auto. Whoever ordered that car could've sprung for the better auto transmission but didn't care. I was getting about 13mpg city, and around 22mpg highway "at best". My friends called the car a tampon for being a convertible, but they never knew how much gas it soaked up either.
nice_lookin_vehicle@reddit
Our '23 Mazda CX50 had terrible hwy mileage. We averaged 24-26 mpg. I think the sticker said 28 or 29. Never got close on multiple long trips.
Mojave_Idiot@reddit
Toss up between my V10 super duty and LX570. Ultimately calling worse for the LX570 on account of the fuel capacity.

Newer turbo Outbacks 20mpg annnd ascents 16-17
JaggedCougar224@reddit
My old 2004 Nissan armada got 8 mpg on average with a mix of highway and city. The only reason I could go anywhere was the massive 28 gallon tank that could actually fit 30-32
clauderbaugh@reddit
My dad had a C10 / K5 Chevy Blazer when I was young. I could literally watch that thing's gas gauge move on every drive. I think to this day it's a reason I stop for gas at a 1/4 tank.
Runner up: I had a 2015 Jeep Wranger Rubicon loaded down with more overlandy type gear than necessary pulling an offroad trailer. I was coming back from a cross country trip facing a headwind across the plains and I hit 7mpg. That's the only time I've ever seen a modern vehicle's gauge move. I was forced to stop at the only station around and pay $8 per gallon. That station was creep AF and was straight out of a horror movie.

My 1979 Mercedes 450SEL6.9 gets around 6mpg when you're driving it and having fun.

My g37 got 13.7 at one point

My 2012 Nissan Patrol/Armada gives about 3-3.5 kmpl (7-8 in freedom units) in spirited driving mode. Can go upto max 5 kmpl in grandma mode on highways.
_Thorshammer_@reddit
The Countach averaged 7mpg.
You could probably find a big block Chrysler from the late sixties that did worse, but (according to a fast search) the Lambo is the worst since we started tracking it.
burrgerwolf@reddit
My dad’s 84 F150 gets 7-8 no matter how you drive it. At 70mph it’s just a giant brick.
Same thing with my old 98 5.2 Grand Cherokee, it got 14 mpg no matter what you did. Even downhill.
RupanIII@reddit
My Mercedes ML55. 14-15 on a good day and it used premium fuel. Had a lot of fun with that car.
