ASRock motherboard killed my CPU, Should i also replace the motherboard?

Apparently my ASRock motherboard(X870 Steel Legend WiFi) killed my 7600x after 8 months, and to be fair, I hadn't updated the BIOS since I got it (version 3.16). I've seen reports of people getting the same issues even with version 3.30 although it seems to happen a lot less, and 3.40 is too recent to have any data.
I had planned to get an x3d CPU anyway, but my real question is, should I keep using the same motherboard and hope the bios updates fixes it, or get a different motherboard? and if so, which one?
These issues seems to affect disproportionally ASRock boards but I've seen reports on all manufacturers. Is there any board that would be guaranteed to work properly?
I would really prefer not spend money on a new board, but if that implies that it will kill another CPU then i don't have much choice.
Thanks

Happened to me too and their RMA is literally just silent about everything messaged them 2 weeks ago and they just won’t respond
arousedsquirel@reddit
People should sue ASrock for damage made be a greedy manufacturer. Any lawyer likes to make money on this case? When a car is bought and it wrecks engines, something is wrong about the car and the people who build it. That's called liability.
ToraSapphire@reddit
Oh jesus, even Zen4 is getting murdered by AsRock motherboards? I thought it was just Zen5...
hope to god my B650 PG Lightning doesn't murder my 7500F
animeman59@reddit
Why wouldn't you replace the thing that caused your problem?
What kind of question is this?
Most-Initiative8753@reddit
Asrock speed running how to kill a motherboard company with this issue lol.
_gentle_turtle_@reddit
No, let it kill another cpu
thearcticworier@reddit
Keep them coming
ExitOntheInside@reddit
beat me to it . . . just be a bot post , surely someone wouldn't debate this

It hungers for more

Another one
Noxaelum@reddit
How can you tell if a motherboard killed the CPU? Im fairly new to PC building
iRSS7@reddit
New fear unlocked. Don't buy motherboards from ASRock.
pm_me_ur_side8008@reddit
Thats been a thing for awhile now.
Indystbn11@reddit
Eh.. they were fine until the 9000 series fiasco.
Faranocks@reddit
Yep. Some of the better b450/b550 mobos, the worst zen 5 boards though.
Sbarty@reddit
No, you should put another CPU in the motherboard that killed your old CPU.
Did you really need to ask this? Was it not immediately obvious what the answer was?
Wooshio@reddit
From what I understand, only high end X3D CPU's were affected by the PBO over voltages. So it's likely that your board didn't actually kill your 7600X.
Normal-Emotion9152@reddit
Yes replace the mobo with an MSI. MSI is awesome. The only mobo brand I will use.
Loosenut2024@reddit
I just replaced a failed ASUS garbage mobo with an MSI. I went from long boot times, buggy sleep states and fan headers that pulled apart after 4 uses and shorted on the case to a properly working normal PC.
I have never had issues with MSI boards, and yes they arent a great company either. But if you dont ever need support or RMAs then you dont have an issue. All the big brands are known for bad customer service.
Wooshio@reddit
I've been building my own PC's since the late 90's and the only motherboard that ever failed on me was an MSI board, otherwise always had Asus and once ASRock, not a single issue. It's really all a crap shoot.
Normal-Emotion9152@reddit
Yes, that is true about big companies. It is just trying to find the middle ground. It is really the luck of the draw if you get a bad component or something. That is why having a good warranty and extended warranty are a good thing. One with the manufacturer and one with the store you bought it from just in case one fails. Plus using your PC in test bench form before assembly into the final phase is complete to avoid most problems that can occur.
Mini_Spoon@reddit
This is called confirmation bias, an error of thought.
Normal-Emotion9152@reddit
I just have not had any issues of yet with that brand. ASRock was a good brand as well until they could not set the right parameters for their bios that lead to fired CPUs. It could happen with any brand, but when you are talking about expensive CPUs that is quite a gamble to take. Especially if it is not under warranty or insured.
Distinct_Breakfast97@reddit
same. i've only used msi for mobo and zotac with gpu's. not because zotac is cheaper its because it never failed me. I always go for mortar max for mobo.
Mini_Spoon@reddit
You get a 3 year warranty for the CPU through AMD.
myhui@reddit
Get a CPU with a lower power requirement. It seems ridiculous to have to do that and give up on performance, I know ... but at least the CPU won't burn.
Sylphrena91@reddit
Why lower performance on purpose? Just get another board. Performance wise they are all the same anyway and it's cheaper to buy a new board than downgrade to another cpu
myhui@reddit
OK, yes indeed that is an alternative. But if you go with a CPU with a lower power requirement then POSSIBLY no matter what board it's on, it won't burn up. But there's the detail: ANY CPU running above its designed voltage will burn up, as they're only fabricated with power rails on chip to handle the specified max supply voltage. Hence I seen to have just disputed my own statement in my previous post.
Sylphrena91@reddit
Look, I get what you mean. Downgrade CPU, lower power draw, lower chance to burn in. But it's an established fact that asrock kills CPU with a higher chance than other mobo. With troubleshooting a problem, you tend to solve the most probable cause. In this case it's the mobo. So change the mobo and see what happens. If it's not...we'll you can still RMA
Loosenut2024@reddit
Op already has a 7600x so theres what 7500f thats lower. How low can they go? Ask TSMC to fuse off two cores and make it a 4 core?
TactualTransAm@reddit
🤷 sure why not? My fridge went out and keeps spoiling my food but I just buy more food. Naw man c'mon. If it killed one CPU how can you trust it with a second one?
bickid@reddit
I switched from Asrock to Asus after my 9900X got killed. Sure, CPUs can die on any motherboard, but there's clearly a specific issue with this generation of Asrock-motherboards.
My recommendation: Get another motherboard. Asrock should be avoided until the next generation of motherboards.
TheLastGentlemen81@reddit
Do you have a proof of that ? No image = lies
Jashi32@reddit
ASSRock strikes again. Yes replace the board.
Lee_HarveyTeabag@reddit
I went from an asrock Nova to an MSI 870e Tomahawk.
Sylphrena91@reddit
There is no way to tell if 3.40 kills CPU because it's fresh. The CPU from older versions tend to degrade over time with different speeds. Those guys who had dead CPU on 3.40? They have run their CPU on older bios versions. Once you flash your bios to 3.40 before installing the CPU it may be fine, maybe it isn't. Who knows rly? If you are unsure and don't want to chance it, get another mobo.
HankHippopopolous@reddit
Yes replace the motherboard.
I had an Asrock b850m Pro A and it killed 2 CPUs before I learned about the Asrock issue.
I was on bios 3.25 when the second one was killed which was the latest Bios at the time. Each time they claimed the bios had fixed the issue but still reports keep coming at a way higher rate than any other motherboard manufacturer.
I don’t trust that they can fix whatever the issue is with Bios updates at this point.
I’d avoid any Asrock AM5 boards and get any other brand at this point.
theSurgeonOfDeath_@reddit
Yes rma motherboard too. At least this is what i read.
Check asrock subreddit. Some people had issues with same motherboard.
Also 3.16 bios was bad from what I remember but for x3d.
Ps. I have almost a year 9800x3d and i am on 3.40. Updated all the bioses i think i skipped 3.16 and stayed on 3.15 until they made 3.2
If you plan x3d probably i would rma and sold motherboard and go something different than asrock.
ICastCats@reddit
If it's killed it, ask for a refund, and a replacement CPU imo.
Divaura@reddit
I wouldn't risk it, especially with an X3D chip. Get a new board from Gigabyte or MSI.
ziptofaf@reddit
Yes. Just replace the motherboard, there are confirmed reports of users having latest BIOS and being on their 3rd CPU by now as their Asrock has already killed two.
So if your board killed your CPU once then it will likely do it again. Especially if it's X3D, these are most affected of them all.
4sch3@reddit
Well in fairness, maybe you could keep it with the latest firmware update, but I wouldn't. I would sell it and grab a new one to put an X3D in
daanos60@reddit
Get a different board if you wanna be sure, any b650/x670 board has been out for so long, those shouldn't have problems
