I'm sure the driving experience is different, but it's interesting to see that the performance specs and as-tested price are about the same as a capital-t Turbo model from the previous generation. And only a split second slower than the current Turbo. Weighs less than both, too.
NISMO1968@reddit (OP)
My guess is it’s because of the electrically-assisted turbochargers. There’s virtually no lag, even compared to the VTG turbos on the 911 Turbo.
josephrehall@reddit
Exactly. 100% torque from 0-rpm
Natedoggsk8@reddit
At 0 rpm nothing is turning lol we know what u meant tho
Recoil42@reddit
Open question: Should we not be calling electrically-assisted turbochargers 'superchargers', given that they are actively driven?
SirLoremIpsum@reddit
I guess we're getting down to semantics (especially since a turbo was once a turbo supercharger...) but a turbo is exhaust gas driven.
An electrically assisted turbj is still exhaust gas driven, it just has electrical assistance.
Common supercharger parlance has it exclusively belt driven.
I guess if it was exclusively electrically driven... Supercharger would be "better" but I figure we'd have a new word lol.
NISMO1968@reddit (OP)
Because electrically-assisted turbochargers like the ones Porsche is using and electric superchargers like the kits you could buy for your old Mazda Miata are two very different things. The first is still a turbo, two wheels on a common shaft with an electric motor in between, giving extra help at low RPMs and faster spool-up. The second is just a supercharger, only driven by an electric motor instead of a crankshaft belt.
cofango@reddit
Because it is still primarily run by exhaust gases ??
Clintman@reddit
That, and I reckon the addition of an electric motor helps with low-RPM acceleration as well.
Thijsniet@reddit
And grip off the line probably aswell.
solo118@reddit
Porsche- You pick the nut I would give up for this car. Left or right?
Telamir@reddit
Let me guess, and "it might just be the PERFECT 911"?
Bradymyhero@reddit
Drove one of these at PECLA. Launches like mad, handles on rails, great cars.
Can't help feeling though that modern 911s feel a little big.
wawaboy@reddit
shes a heavy girl
Plane_Conversation75@reddit
Yeah 20kg heavier than the normal model sheesh might as well be an suv at that point
parker2020@reddit
Yeah a base 992.2 is only heavier than a 964 by 300 pounds… people just repeat what they read without doing their own research. The 992.2 is substantially larger but it’s not that much heavier.
Bonerchill@reddit
300lbs is two average Europeans, and I prefer my 911s without full-time passengers.
‘Course, I also prefer them older and more fun, before they started making concessions to be better daily drivers for Houstonian real estate agents.
300lbs isn’t insignificant. It’s weight you have to stop and turn and accelerate and damp. It’s weight the tire’s sidewalls and tread blocks have to hide. Everything becomes stiffer, less flowing.
It’s all pedantry, nowadays. Modern buyers do not care, and if they do, they just buy a vintage car to share the garage with their ultra-fast, ultra-capable daily but they end up putting so many miles on the daily that the vintage cars just sits and sits. And then they pay the shops I work for $225+/hr to remedy the damage of sitting.
parker2020@reddit
You are hyper generalizing and simplifying things. All cars got larger due to safety standards you cannot have a sports car as big as a 964 anymore… and REALLY can’t have a sports car as powerful as a 992 and as small as a 964 in 2025. These TikTok kids would be wrapping themselves around trees every other week. Besides it was a super luxurious car in the 90’s leather everywhere, sunroof, heated leather multi way seats. For how much you get in a 992 for the price you are getting multiple GENERATIONS of new modern tech compared to how bait the 90’s cars get for the price.
Bonerchill@reddit
You’re the one generalizing, I’m the one focusing specifically on the effect of weight.
I don’t care about power or tech or lateral grip or cup holders or CarPlay. I care about whether or not a car goes down the road like I want, and weight makes cars go down the road like I don’t want.
parker2020@reddit
Have you ever driven a car wtf??? What are you taking about lmfaooo. You are not feeling 300 pounds on the road and unless you’re an advanced driver you aren’t feeling 300 pounds in a corner. You will feel the difference in PASM and 22inch tires vs 17 inch tires in both situations as a mediocre dude 😭😭
IcameforthePie@reddit
You absolutely do. Most people don't get to experience driving the same car back to back with 300lbs taken out, but you absolutely feel it. Find a friend with the same car as you, then get aggressive stripping weight out of one of them and drive back to back. It's pretty fun.
Assuming the same compound, tire and wheel width, and weight (this is a stretch) your average driver won't notice any handling difference between different tire diameters. Wheel size is mostly aesthetic choice and ability to clear the brakes.
parker2020@reddit
It feels like you commented for the sake of being contrarian…
IcameforthePie@reddit
No, just speaking from experience from building fun cars with friends. You're the one that claimed only an advanced driver would feel a 300lbs difference in a corner. Maybe learn something and get some hands on experience before having strong opinions?
parker2020@reddit
lol k
demonkeyed@reddit
300 lbs for over 2x the horsepower, scores better safety and comfort, way bigger brakes and tires, far superior suspension and ride quality, luxury, etc…
Bonerchill@reddit
And far less involvement.
Which is literally all I care about in a car like this, which is why I don’t care about cars like this.
Ftpini@reddit
It’s 92 lbs lighter than my wife’s CR-V, yet it’s 572 lbs lighter than my Mustang GT. Not all SUVs are heavy just like how not all sports cars are lightweight.
Plane_Conversation75@reddit
I’m taking the piss out of the guy
Ftpini@reddit
That’s fair. I just enjoy pulling stats!
JustaguyTTV@reddit
unless some big scandal comes out this is a solid continuation tbh
Porencephaly@reddit
Friend just got one, it’s very quick. Porsche is just a few days from a press event at which they will probably launch the new Turbo/Turbo S and it’s a safe bet they will also have the electric turbo technology. Since the GTS is now within 30ish hp of the old Turbo, it’s hard to imagine the new turbo won’t have like 650hp and the S at 700+.
Moist-Emergency-3030@reddit
The reviews I’ve seen of the car I didn’t like the exhaust note at all
What the verdict on this car in the winter and prolonged storage times? Ive heard they have massive issues if they are not turned on every couple weeks or so.
agray20938@reddit
To be fair, it's been a longstanding pattern for different 911 models/trims (mine included) to be a coin flip on whether the exhaust sounds good at all.
R_V_Z@reddit
911s come in two flavors: Vacuum Cleaner and Banshee.
NISMO1968@reddit (OP)
Right, and it would be interesting to see how much Porsche will throw into the new GT2, which rumors say is at least planned.
AudiB9S4@reddit
It’s regrettable that this is PDK only.
Fighter_M@reddit
Yes, stick is a dying breed… Unfortunately!
kraken_enrager@reddit
Until we get the gear based motor and battery powertrain. I forget where I got this, but apparently someone (rivian?) is exploring 4 motor and a multi battery setup where the power curves are distinct.
So 4 motors, where either you can run 1 rear motor, 2 rear motors or all 4 motors, and connected to 2 separate batteries.
So 3 motors levels * power draw from either only 1 or both batteries.
So basically the power level for each level of motor differs and 1 vs 2 battery also increases or decreases the power output so it mimics an engine.
FuckTheFourth@reddit
That sounds needlessly complicated honestly.
BTTWchungus@reddit
Water pump inside engine? lol fuck off Porsche
DrKhanMD@reddit
If you're buying a 165k car, you don't give two shits about some horrendous maint job that might not even hit until after you've moved onto the next model. Porsche already made their money selling it, so why do they care? If anything you coming back to the dealer is an excuse to sell you a new one instead, lol.
Current gen 911's feel like the Ferraris and Lambos of my childhood. For the average person, they might as well only exist to sell posters.
gimp2x@reddit
Correct, and this is first generation of hybrid technology in the 911, this car will age like milk regardless
Exotic_Pollution8346@reddit
what you don't want an engine out service in 15 years?? lol
allgasnoshit@reddit
As if they learned nothing from the Ford 3.5s…
Vhozite@reddit
I love reading about how these performance hybrids. Ither than the increased complexity, cool ICE drivetrains with electrification seems like such a fun combination. I’ll never be able to afford a GTS or E-Ray, but I hope the lessons learned from these cars will eventually trickle down to cheaper models.
Vorcia@reddit
I've noticed NSX prices rising over the last year in my local area. It makes me wonder if the hate for electrification is overblown on the internet or people just like the new NSX enough to not care about the hybrid system. Because if people really do dislike hybridization as much the internet does, I could see an E-Ray being pretty affordable by the time the C9 special editions are out.
Vhozite@reddit
Yeah I’m kinda hedging my bets a bit. If E-Ray is popular hopefully it means more hybrid sports cars will follow. If E-Ray is unpopular just maybe I can scoop one up before I’m 6 feet!
I’m not sure how much hate is real vs just the internet, but I do know I don’t really share the same opinions as a lot of these people permanently online. Especially if ppl on this sub hate it that gives me hope it’ll sell ok.
biguk997@reddit
I test drove an E-Ray and it was seriously impressive. Stupidly fast and you can't tell its electrified at all. Theyre starting to dip into the 90s, id expect we see some in the low 80s by next year.
Vorcia@reddit
Ye I have the same logic as you
Popular = they'll eventually make it to the mainstream and we can get them in the cheap sports car segment eventually
Unpopular = the cool high end sportscars/low end supercars will depreciate into affordability eventually
agray20938@reddit
Yeah, unless it wildly changes the character of the car I don't think a hybrid system has nearly the same effect on people's view of a sports car compared to full EV. If it did, 918 Spyders and Mclaren P1s wouldn't have stayed desirable while full EVs have tanked.
Odds are this is just a combination of the second-gen NSX becoming more appreciated (and speculating about appreciation) now that it's discontinued with only about 1500 ever being made....
Just based on production numbers, that is almost certainly going to be the case with most corvette trims that aren't true limited editions.
lori2806@reddit
In Europe the "cheap" versions were the first to come out, VAG has been making hybrid hot hatches with Golf GTE and Cupra/Audi variants, my Cupra Leon makes 245hp with a 150hp gas + 110hp electric engine, it's very fun to drive even if automatic. Also we pay taxes on the car's horsepower but only the gas engine's hp counts towards it so you save a fair bit.
KStang086@reddit
One of my dream cars, but that price tag. Oof. Well spec'd crosses the $200k mark.
Aggressive-Web3038@reddit
That's wild. Basically the same specs and price as the old Turbo, barely slower than the new one, and still lighter. Crazy.
Trades46@reddit
A hybrid 911 was always going to be inevitable given stringent emissions regulations, but the approach Porsche has taken is quite novel. Seems to also made a big stride in performance even though electrification weight gain isn't good for a sports coupe.
