That was like the least offensive of the "well wudya look at that" jab at modern life in the entire season, despite how awkwardly the character talks about it.
The whole season was 10 episodes of the writers unhumorously pointing out things that didn't exist last time King of the Hill was on the air. Look, Bobby has a fusion restaraunt, ain't that something. Ain't craft beer a 'lil different.
After the first few episodes, it mellowed out with the Boomerisms, but then it was just boring. There were a few episodes that used modern references to make a plot almost without feeling tongue-in-cheek.
I've seen it work for lots of gay couples. It works if both people can successfully seek out casual sex and are able to separate hookup-sex from relationship emotion
From what I've seen, it's usually that one person wants to cheat with someone specific without consequences or wants to be single without losing out on the emotional side of being in a relationship.
The other person usually agrees because they don't want to be single and emotionally detach so no one is happy.
Yeah I suppose he breaks the norm. Just that the majority of cucked men that fantasize about watching their wives get fucked are always proven to be white conservative men
The only way it really works is if both parties come into the relationship understanding that it’s an open relationship and both pursue other partners without hiding anything from their primary partner. People who start out with a normal relationship and try to “open” it pretty much all fail, from what I’ve seen.
99% of open relationships are between people who never should have attempted ENM in a million years.
It's not for most people, and yet in the last 10 years it's basically become the same as blue hair. You're required to try it if you consider yourself in any way progressive, with predictably awful results.
I really don't understand why people think that. There's a part in one of Kevin Smith's Q&As where some woman asks him if he "thinks all any lesbian really needs is a good deep-dicking", referencing a line from Chasing Amy. He's just like, "Oh, God, no! That's why we had Banky, the idiot character who's always wrong, say that!" People just aren't media-literate even a little bit nowadays. There's a pro wrestler who played a MAGA heel on the indy scene and he got fired from his day job as a teacher because of it. He wasn't even subtle about making the character out to be a villain. It's so fucked up
At will employment goes both ways. We don’t generally have employment contracts so the employee can walk away at any time with no notice. Conversely, employers are entitled the same rights and can shitcan you with no notice or really any reason.
I don't understand why if I had workplace protections I'd be expected to give up the ability to just walk.
I should be the one making my own decisions about whether I'm willing to work for you unless you're finally gonna start offering a starting pay of 500k.
Has nothing to do with at will employment that is being discussed. In addition, when an employer fires you without cause, they have to pay out unemployment benefits. I don’t think you really understand how things work in the US.
This is simply not true. I wish to christ that we didn't have protections. There is one particular individual that I know professionally that absolutely needs to be removed from their position for ruining lives... THE ONLY REASON THIS PERSON HAS A JOB IS BECAUSE OF PROTECTIONS.
The negligence is gross and borderline malicious. I know for a fact that the only reason this person still has a job is because of how the employment contract was set up. Without going into detail, I can say that it is nearly impossible to fire this person and HR has been gathering information and notes to bring to court for the eventual battle to remove them from their position.
This person is in charge of a division in the local college system. The students that leave the programs do not go on to pass the nationally mandated tests for certification. This ends up costing the students a lot of money... imagine going into debt to learn a skill and then not being able to pass a national exam to get a job. The school's performance is MUCH lower than the national average.
This has been goin on for YEARS! Hundreds of students have left this program without being able to pass the exams and burdened by the debt of a shit education.
You were so close… “this person is in charge of a division”. There you go. Entire point finished. Protections exist for the upper end of companies, not the lower. When you say “I wish we had less protections” you actually mean “I wish supervisory/administrative positions had less protections.” You’re welcome
This is the con of no protection, which is massively over weighed by the pros of having protection. Better for people to feel safe in their jobs than one person that should be fired not getting fired.
The problem is people are unable to disconnect media from reality. They grow up being spoon-fed their entire moral belief system from cartoons like 'GI Joe' having characters turning to the screen and saying 'ALWAYS EAT YOUR VEGETABLES!'
People constantly act like media has to reflect reality 1:1, and directly address real social issues like immigration, bigotry, Trump, etc... and as such when they see media doing a bad thing, they take it as an endorsement of said bad thing, even if (as with the Kevin Smith example above) they go out of their way to show that thi's not an endorsement of it. People will still take it that way and assume it was done deliberately as a promotion of a negative ideal
I realised years ago that this is the exact same mentality that causes people to say 'violent video-games cause violence', because it's the exact same matter of 'fiction = reality'. Next time anyone tries to tell you that fiction is ALWAYS a reflection of reality and therefore must portray constantly real-world issues accurately and explicitly, or that racial caricatures somehow cause racism, hit them with the above remark. Guarantee, they're the exact person who thinks violent video-games don't casue real-world vioelnce, and the connection between the two will damn near stunlock them.
If you ever watched the “Devvo” series by David Firth in the early days of youtube, unfortunately the guy that played Devvo also got fired from his teaching job, over a decade after his last appearance as the character. Just because the character had a bit of a resurgence in popularity for a moment and they couldn’t tell the videos were fake. Even though at one point he was literally on TV playing the character on channel 4.
I wish I could remember the name but I remember reading a book for a class in high school where the first 2 chapters follows a pair of protagonists as they travel together, and they basically keep telling each other how important it is to always help people and fight injustice, and right at the end of the second chapter they get to the city they've been traveling to and they're so hopeful that they're going to make it a better place. And then the start of chapter 3 skips like a year forward and one of the characters is working at a clinic and lives in the slums, while the other is an enforcer for a mob boss/slave trader and living in a rich neighborhood.
I remember a classmate insisting that the author was promoting being a terrible person because the good character had a hard life and the bad character was living easy, and would not accept the idea that the author was exploring how people are willing to abandon their stated ideals if doing so will guarantee them comfort and luxury. It's been over 15 years since I've read it but I remember the character living in the slums having a pretty good time throughout the book despite living surrounded by poverty. Meanwhile the book the mob enforcer character literally burns to death from the inside while all of his "friends" just watch and refuse to help him, symbolizing how his greed has destroyed him.
"If a protagonist says it then it must be an endorsement (a protagonist is anyone who isn't evil because that's what it means right? the antagonist is the bad guy so the protagonist is the good guy)"
ENM relationships can be that, but usually only if the relationship starts monogamous. If it's two people with that same mindset going in, it's as functional as any other relationship.

This is what manipulative assholes do. It’s not the open relationship that’s the problem, it’s that people who would cheat otherwise pretend they want an open relationship. There’s no problem if you actually have a good relationship
It's actually a pretty good time-skip and they kept it triento the first 13 seasons. It's not a reboot, it's just Hank coming back to Texas after being in a middle eastern time-bubblenfor 9 years and learning all this new shit at once.

as far it concerns germans, koth is purely as us-thing. maybe the uk and scandnavia had it, but nobody here knows hank...
In this show, Connie is actually the one getting the shorter end of the ENM shtick
Her bf is getting sex while she is too busy double majoring at college. She tells Bobby that he’s not ENM material because Bobby is traditional and prefers committed relationships
Bobby struggles with how causal things are and seemingly does better than Connie at getting dates, but at the end of the reboot, they do date. This meme just took the common ENM situation and ran with it, but KotH calls it out multiple times and uses it to show Connie still being controlled by her parents and how she focuses on her studies despite everything going on around her, just like the episode where her parents became rednecks
When you get down to it, KofH is Andy Griffith. You have one normal guy with a bunch of idiots orbiting around him and like Andy Griffith they had to tone down the main character. First season Andy is a creepy, passive aggressive dick and first season Hank is an angry asshole. Only Andy is locked in a time capsule that is Mayberry and Hank is constantly a fish out of water. If you don't tinker with that basic formula, it just works.
Yup, but in this case, he’s not even a relatively decent bf to her, all she gets is some approval by the pairings parents. Connie basically gets a label and that’s all
Yep. This level of illiteracy is also why people can't understand that the Joker, Walter White, etc. are simultaneously main characters while not being heroes. They conflate "it's on the TV" with "I'm supposed to root for it."
To be fair, a lot of "woke" shows with bad writing are using portrayal as just endorsement. Media literacy is down because not even the writers are that literate.
I'm gonna start applying the logic of the first comment and slutshame people in couple too. Like look at you disgusting sex-havers and your couple, i bet you have frequent sex.
Brother, as much as anyone has a right to be in any relationship they want, others too have a right to shame them if they want to regardless if their reasons are good or not.
This just in, girl in college has sex. Anon also fails to mention she was in an open relationship with someone else so Bobby wasn't an option at the time.

Vespasian79@reddit
It’s wild how insanely good the reboot was, it captures the original feeling while also being timely and modern
ShutUpJackass@reddit
I’ll be honest, I didn’t have much faith in it, due to many other cartoons dropping the ball
But this one has been great! They kept the heart of KotH but let it grow
steauengeglase@reddit
When you get down to it, KofH is Andy Griffith. You have one normal guy with a bunch of idiots orbiting around him and like Andy Griffith they had to tone down the main character. First season Andy is a creepy, passive aggressive dick and first season Hank is an angry asshole. Only Andy is locked in a time capsule that is Mayberry and Hank is constantly a fish out of water. If you don't tinker with that basic formula, it just works.
clotifoth@reddit
keep telling yourself that
reminder that just because it's rebooted you don't have to care one bit about it
in fact why don't you like creative original works why are you so into reruns lol
Vespasian79@reddit
Yes sir sorry sir
MRoad@reddit
That's not even the point. She's just more or less nominally in a relationship with Chane to keep her parents happy while seeing other people
ShutUpJackass@reddit
Yup, but in this case, he’s not even a relatively decent bf to her, all she gets is some approval by the pairings parents. Connie basically gets a label and that’s all
ShamrockGold@reddit
That scene felt like she was defending ENM to herself, more than Bobby.
Medical_Artichoke666@reddit
Did you watch the show, OP?

"Anon is angered that fictional character he probably fantasizes about is in an open relationship in a FICTIONAL show"
TheJeeeBo@reddit
People really think that if something is in a show, it's because they support it
legopego5142@reddit
Something the hippie vegan calls out in the very next episode lol
GonzoRouge@reddit
Also, the hippie vegan is legitimately freaky as fuck herself and a "I can fix her" kind of girl.
I hope she comes back, she was pretty funny.
jednorog@reddit
Yep. This level of illiteracy is also why people can't understand that the Joker, Walter White, etc. are simultaneously main characters while not being heroes. They conflate "it's on the TV" with "I'm supposed to root for it."
BackForPathfinder@reddit
To be fair, a lot of "woke" shows with bad writing are using portrayal as just endorsement. Media literacy is down because not even the writers are that literate.
YourFavoritNew@reddit
Annon needs to open his mind and mouth for this polyamorous dick in his mouth.
Wiinterfang@reddit
Very realistic depiction for Connie. And her parents got divorced so she definitely coping, pretending she doesn't want anything serious
This is shown as a character flaw.

ITT: People alone or with partners that get upset when they talk to people.
EBthe13@reddit
Have these people aver heard of commentary on modern societal issues?
Psykopatate@reddit
I'm gonna start applying the logic of the first comment and slutshame people in couple too. Like look at you disgusting sex-havers and your couple, i bet you have frequent sex.
YoungDiscord@reddit
If it made you feel something then congratulations, it did its job at making an impactful social commentary.

Anon is a massive ret@rd
Many such cases
Ahabs-Left-Leg@reddit
You almost threw the remote at the TV? Woah, calm down over there, killer!
drewmana@reddit
I mean, people can be in a different type of relationship than what you want, that doesn’t mean you get to shame them.
They can also be disappointed you want something else. That doesn’t mean they can shame you.
MrAnder5on@reddit
I sure as shit can, and I will.
We're not out here normalizing this
gnarlyhobo@reddit
Shaming is a fundamental.human right
Telleh@reddit
Brother, as much as anyone has a right to be in any relationship they want, others too have a right to shame them if they want to regardless if their reasons are good or not.
TL;DR: Yes they can.
Warm-Iron-1222@reddit
There were hints in this new season that Bobby should've known she ain't the one.
OriginalName18@reddit
This just in, girl in college has sex. Anon also fails to mention she was in an open relationship with someone else so Bobby wasn't an option at the time.
HertzWhenEyeP@reddit
Can this sub go back to being about KotH and stop being an endless strawman argument about ENM
tboom9@reddit
Sir this is r/greentext
HertzWhenEyeP@reddit
Shit...
I need to edit, but this is legitimately the only fucking post on theKotH sub these days.
