Examples of questions suitable for here:
- Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
- I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
- I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Trying to pick a 4k monitor for this build. I have an Acer XB270HU 1440p monitor I plan to keep as a secondary, any suggestions for a main monitor arpund $800? I'm planning to buy the CPU/Mobo/Ram bundle at microcenter, so I can pick it up there as well.

Used 7900 xtx for $500 or new 9070 xt?
No_Spare1827@reddit
for $500 thats actually a decnt deal, I think most 9070XTs are about $700 so yeah the 7900xtx is a better deal, now if u care about Raytracing or FSR4 then maybe spend the $200 extra
reckless150681@reddit
If 9070 XT close to MSRP, 9070 XT
If 9070 XT more than $700, 7900 XTX
If 9070 XT is about $650, more nuance needed:
If you care about ray tracing, 9070 XT
If you need a lot of VRAM (e.g. maybe you play a lot of 4K?), 7900 XTX
If you care about warranty periods, 9070 XT

I have a laptop with a 3060 and the battery is on it's last legs. Doesn't have pass through charging. Is it worth taking apart and repurposing into a mini pc for my gf that plays minecraft and the sims?
TemptedTemplar@reddit
It could be if you can add pass through charging for maybe just swap the battery out.
But the bigger problem with laptop GPUs is their extremely low power consumption. Do you know the model?
30 series GPUs could get as low as 15 watts which is ridiculous. If you are moving to being plugged in at all times, see if you can increase or lock the power consumption at a higher wattage to improve the GPUs performance.
Squishy_singer@reddit
yeah so i actually have the RTX 3050 with a i7-11390H. I’ll have to look into adding pass through. I’m using an HP Specter 2-1 16 that i got back in like 2020

It doesn't look like the USB-C ports can be upgraded, but does it not have a dedicated AC adapter? HPs website is listing a 90w adapter which should be more than enough to keep it up and running 24/7, even with this small GPU power increase.
ctl66@reddit
If I replace everything about my PC, only keeping the SSD, will Windows recognise it as the same PC for licensing reasons?
n7_trekkie@reddit
I've had it stay activated when doing this. Activation works in mysterious ways. Being tired to the mobo is an urban legend I think
kaje@reddit
Windows activation is tied to the mobo. It will likely deactivate when booting on the new mobo, and then you need to deal with the license to reactivate it.
ctl66@reddit
Ok but will I be able to reactivate using the same key?
kaje@reddit
If it's an OEM key, you're supposed to get a new key. If it's a retail key, it can be transferred.
ctl66@reddit
Cool, thanks!
t90fan@reddit
it depends, did you buy windows retail or did it come with your PC
ctl66@reddit
Bought it retail
t90fan@reddit
then it might just ask you to reactivate and then it will keep working
ctl66@reddit
Great, thanks!

One of my case fans that came with my case is making a lot of noise and I want to change it to a Noctua fan. The result will be two RGB fans that came with the case and the Noctua fan. Is that possibble?
Any advice on doing it is greatly appreciated as it would be the first time for me opening my PC and actually changing stuff
Protonion@reddit
You can mix and match case fans as much as you like, there's no limitations there. The included fans are probably plugged into some sort of fan hub/RGB controller. The Noctua fan doesn't have RGB and as such doesn't need the controller, so you can plug it directly into a fan header on the motherboard. The headers are completely standard so just look for one that says CHA_FAN or SYS_FAN
bestanonever@reddit
Yes, as long as you connect the new fan to the same pin-connectors of the older one, it will work just fine. In fact, it will work in any free pin for case fans. Just do it with your PC turned off.

I have not paid attention to any hardware since my build over 5 years ago. Is upgrading just the GPU valid here or should I be looking at a bigger overhaul? - rtx 2060 - i7-9700 - 32 GB ram - 850W
Looking in the realm of an rtx 5070 with the minimal research so far
MisawaMahoKodomo@reddit
CPU is kinda old now and everything is quite cpu intensive nowadays so high chance the gpu isnt going to be used 99%
Actually hardware canucks just did a similar video recently you can see their results
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NqRTVzk2PXs
Nmind33@reddit
Thanks for this, that video was very useful and perfect for my question.
MisawaMahoKodomo@reddit
I should probably mention they also have another video where they tested the 5070 specifically
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TXKyQYiLro8
MisawaMahoKodomo@reddit
Yeah the yootoobers should really do more of these types of videos from time to time
Alas who knows how much time is required to do this
The results are kinda surprising the intel cpus have held up much better than the older amd cpus because they started from a higher position soo at 1440p the differences in the cpu is quite small actually
You have the odd game like baldur gate with a massive falloff otherwise the others are like maybe a few fps or even no change
CPU constraint wont be getting any better so while it works forr now in some time probably have to move on the cpu is over 5 years old now
t90fan@reddit
Upgrade your GPU now and you can always do CPU later
MisawaMahoKodomo@reddit
Just wanted to add that while im not suree about the other gpus
The video from canucks used a 5060ti which had some issue specifically on a pcie gen 3 cpu not sure if the 5070 has that
Otherwisee
The cpu is really old now although you might or might not be able to drag it out for another year or soo
joe1134206@reddit
9060 xt 16 gb is worth considering as well. We are in a period where vram isn't really keeping up with what games want to use. If you personally like to upgrade closer to every 5 years or so, I would go with 16 GB VRAM. 5070 is a reasonably fast card, faster than the 9060 xt actually, but that 12 GB framebuffer will have you turning down textures if not now, then in the future again assuming you care about more new/cutting edge games. A new console will happen eventually and the vram requirements for console ports will necessarily shift. Do note that the 50 series Super cards are expected late this year or, less likely, early next year and will add 50% VRAM to each card. Nvidia loves to play games with their GPU stock apparently so it may be a nightmare to find one without paying more than the actual retail price - but regardless, that is coming up soon. 5070 SUPER if it comes to fruition will thus have 18 GB VRAM. Games you could otherwise play will need texture resolution turned down essentially - simply because the amount of VRAM isn't large enough for the textures of a certain setting. Turning up textures doesn't otherwise hurt performance if you have enough VRAM and it does result in a noticeable improvement in fidelity to much of the game.

Looking for second opinions before I pull the trigger on this 9060xt + 9600x build. Purpose is gaming. BG3, rimworld, EU4, Elden Ring, that sort of thing. My aim is value for money because I am not trying to play the most modern or demanding things with ultra graphics. I appreciate longevity and reliability. I doubt I would upgrade after just 2-3 years. More like 5-8 years.
Am I cheaping out too much on the SSD or the RAM?
Re the motherboard (Gigabyte B650M AORUS ELITE AX ICE), it costs more than some similar AS Rock options but reddit is full of complaints of them frying AMD cpus... I have looked at other cheaper options but there are either limited reviews or complaints on reddit about many of them. If there is a reliable cheaper motherboard I would definitely be interested. Bluetooth preferable.
The only part I have bought so far is the PSU.
Correx96@reddit
Good build man, check to check the clearance between case and the cooler!
sweetrobins-k-hole@reddit
Good shout. Looks like I'm okay with 10mm to spare. A bit tight but hopefully it's alright.
Aleksanterinleivos@reddit
There's a white version of the Peerless Assassin, would match the build better maybe?
RAM is fine.
For the SSD might want more space?
There's a white version of that case too?
sweetrobins-k-hole@reddit
Thank you, yes I was considering getting that. I have flip flopped a bit on going white-chic. The case doesn't come with a glass panel so the parts won't normally be visible, but the panel is only about £10 so I may get it anyway. In that case I probably would get the white case and white cooler, thanks for pointing that out.
For the SSD, I was just going to use it for the OS and a couple of games as I have a spare WD Blue SN570 2TB. I believe the motherboard has a second NVME slot that I can hopefully use for that. Apologies, left that out of the list!
Thanks v much for the feedback
winterkoalefant@reddit
list looks good, including SSD and RAM!
You can save £16 on the GPU by getting the black version, the Sapphire Pulse.
Motherboards are mostly based on the same design from each manufacturer so reliability is almost always similarly good for their core features so I wouldn't worry too much. That said, the one you picked has good features for the price.
sweetrobins-k-hole@reddit
Thank you, that's really helpful!
MisawaMahoKodomo@reddit
Between the Cooler Master MWE and MSI MAG which PSU should I get? Or should I get something else? (Both seem the same aside from the name)
No_Spare1827@reddit
Can I ask what ur region is, along with what wattage u are looking at?
n7_trekkie@reddit
There's many different models even within those names. Which ones are you looking at?
WannabeUtaite@reddit
How much of a difference does RAM speed make? I'm having trouble deciding on if I want one with 5200mhz but with RGB, or one with 6000mhz and no RGB.
t90fan@reddit
I mean, do you care about RGB?
joe1134206@reddit
We are assuming same CAS latency but practically speaking that also matters. If you're getting an x3d AMD cpu then it really isn't going to do much but generally you want to get 6000 MHZ (MT/s) CL30

https://www.techpowerup.com/review/ddr5-memory-performance-scaling-with-amd-zen-5/16.html
No_Spare1827@reddit
well it depends on a few things, honestly 5200 to 6000 u will never notice no matter how hard u try. Now if u are on AMD's AM5 platform then as long as u have lower CL rating then u will get the most out of ur CPU, about the CL28 -CL36 range with CL 30 often being the price to performance "sweet spot" Now if u have an X3D CPU then RAM speeds and CL ratings matters even less than with just an X variant.
So if u want RGB and the kit is 5200 and CL30-CL36 then i say go for it, if RGB doesn't matter then get the slightly faster kit

Going to buy this new build in a month. Im only going to get the 5080 if I find it at MSRP but I have been seeing that. Any recommendations on fine tuning? Everything look good and compatible here?
No_Spare1827@reddit
I like everything about this build, good CPU, good cooler, 64gbs is a really smart call u will appreciate that. The case is good but know that it only comes with 3 120mm fans. the PSU is solid but if u do get a 5080 Id recommend a 1000w though it should be ok with an 850w. the SSD is a really nice pick and 4tbs will give u plenty of room
Now the only place I recommend changing is the motherboard, u might be good with this one but we see daily reports of ASrock motherboards breaking X3D CPUs, so to play it safe i would recommend a different brand. maybe try something like this out https://pcpartpicker.com/list/TMrqFZ
just a change to a high quality 1050w unit and a very nice motherboard with good USB and large VRMs to support any future CPU u might get, plus it looks good
SilentNova300@reddit
Love the additions, thanks! I’ll take your list as my final build.
Do you know any good cases? Particularly ones that have glass and aren’t open like the one I’m getting? Or can I put a glass panel on that one
No_Spare1827@reddit
do u mean glass on the side? if so then that case does come with a glass side panel, as do most cases. is there a particular look u are going for, or style/color scheme?
SilentNova300@reddit
Ah ok, well any case recommendations in general to house all those components with good cooling?
No_Spare1827@reddit
Well it will ultimately depends on what u like but here are some cases I have built in that I liked
Montech AIR 903 MAX - same thing but more fans
Lian Li Lancool 207 - a great option for a clean look and near silent 160mm fans
Phanteks XT PRO ULTRA - simple basic easy to build in and no frills
Montech XR - another simple design but offers that modern look for a good price
Montech KING 95 PRO - a decent step up from the XR with a unique look and stylish fans
Lian Li Vector V100R - if u are looking for a PC show case then for the price this will show off the build.
be quiet! Pure Base 500 FX - Now if u are looking for something visually loud but has great cooling and quality fans then this case is a great choice.
These aren't the only options but just some that stand out to me out of the ones I have built in and offer fans, there are different versions and styles to all of these and other brands that make a similar cases too, not sure what ur budget is so I tried to keep it on the lower side for most of them. but I hope this helps
