Recycle or Refurbish

These came in for recycling today. I’m going to see if I can clean them up and get an OS installed.

Quick wipe and see if it works, look for blown capacitors and then make your choice?
BMK812@reddit
Never recycle. They just grind it up to retrieve a fraction of the material.
Jlzzleizzle@reddit (OP)
I was asking them last week what they did with it. He said he pulls all the precious metals he can out and melts them down for weight to cash. The rest goes to the dump. I would never make any money doing their job, I'd be reviving everything I could.

I worked for a ewaste recycle company. I had dibs on whatever I wanted. But some of the stuff we tossed would have brought this sub to tears. I used to fill my car up almost nightly with electronics that I thought I could sell or use for parts. I saved a bunch of Macintosh SE classics once. iMac g3s, gaming systems, even a couple laser disc players once. The owner did have a little shop at the front where we would sell laptops and desktops that still had usable life though. I know the larger commercial ewaste places just throw away whatever though, and the small shop is worked at did as well for the most part.

There's always storage units my dude

Looks like a caddy-based optical drive, in which case finding caddies is likely to be the biggest challenge.
Jlzzleizzle@reddit (OP)
I do agree. I was looking at that earlier at work. I don't know the last time I saw a caddy. I do have some IDE optical drives at work though, so that could do. but I would like to keep the system as original as I can.
Xpuc01@reddit
I’d be either very careful powering them up, or not power them up at all until I have a check over the PSUs primarily and all the caps all around the mobos. Being this old, it’s almost certain you’ll fry something and they will end up total loss
antiparadeigma@reddit
Refurbish or we’re gonna have problems.
cndctrdj@reddit
Refurbish or sell cheap to someone here.
ziplock9000@reddit
This. Don't destroy history. There's far too much of that in the world
Laser_Krypton7000@reddit
I second this!
Crispy511@reddit
I third this! Those 5.25” drives aren’t getting any easier to find lol
Marco-YES@reddit
Refurbish of course!
RUKiddingMeReddit@reddit
I want that case.

Lovely dot-matrix printer too. They work with generic drivers so are usable in modern machines using appropriate cable too.
Jlzzleizzle@reddit (OP)
I kind of want to get it going and hooked to a print server so people can see operational older hardware. I think our customers would get a kick out of it. At the very least, I will enjoy the sound of every print.
d1r4cse4@reddit
They are easy to work on, usually just light cleanup and relube gets the mech going. Ribbon either needs replacing (if plastic type) or can be rejuvenated if it’s literal ribbon (cloth type), what worked best for me was reinking with stamp ink and once it’s dried out, sprayed the ribbon in cart with thin oil: just ink alone dries out and it won’t print. Now prints very well. However an other printer with plastic type used up ribbon I couldn’t get to print well after trying to rejuvenate ribbon, so likely need to find unused replacement, or replace ribbon itself with cloth type. Either way you will need to pry the cartridge open.
hendersonrich93@reddit
You could send it to the Smithsonian

Oh hey, a media vision branded CD-ROM. I bet it has a Pro Audio Spectrum inside as well.
Jlzzleizzle@reddit (OP)
I added a link to the images I took today. It does have a sound card, but I haven't had a chance to really look at it yet. https://imgur.com/a/0z1TyqJ
refuge9@reddit
The PAS and PAS16 were often sold in bundles with CD-ROM drives, and given that the CD drive itself is marked ‘MediaVision’ which was the company that made the Peo Audio Spectrum line of cards, I’d bet that’s what you’ve got. They were pretty nice cards. Honestly usually better than sound blasters of the era, but less conpatability support. Not as good as a Gravis Ultrasound, but few things were.
Dumbass_Saiya-jin@reddit
God, who were the previous owners? Patty and Selma Bouvier?
Jlzzleizzle@reddit (OP)
Not often I hear/read their last name. Truth! I took it off the shelf and my fingers stuck to it.
Dumbass_Saiya-jin@reddit
Eugh... 3 solid decades of smoke and tar will do that to plastic...
Blood-PawWerewolf@reddit
Refurbish it. Retrobrite can get rid of the yellowing, and it’s probably a 286 based system, which is an uncommon system to have!
Jlzzleizzle@reddit (OP)
The front says 386. The bios concurs. https://imgur.com/a/0z1TyqJ Hopefully tomorrow I can hook it up and see if it posts. We have the ability to solder if the onboard battery is toast. The board doesn't have any corrosion and the case has a couple spots of rust, but nothing majorly off-putting.
Blood-PawWerewolf@reddit
Good luck! This stuff is fun to restore and fix up
majestic_ubertrout@reddit
Definitely refurb the PC. Others...depends.
Jlzzleizzle@reddit (OP)
I really want the Rainbow to work. I will definitely be refurbishing the PC. I can't let something like that full of nostalgia head off to the landfill.
majestic_ubertrout@reddit
It's a cool printer! Have you seen the LGR about it? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1jojSZsoqo
Jlzzleizzle@reddit (OP)
Oh wow! No, I hadn't. We had one of these when I was little. I remember my grandma was so excited when it came. I think she ordered it over the phone or from a catalog. We used to make all kinds of banners. I spent hours on the Encarta interactive CD and she spent most of her time playing hearts or some casino like games, chain smoking Liggett cigarettes. I hope to revive this little workhorse!
capsulegamedev@reddit
Totally worthless. Give it to me and I'll dispose of it properly.
Jlzzleizzle@reddit (OP)
Hahahahha. That's what they allll say! My boss was like just let it go. It isn't feasible to keep it running. Like dude, you didn't grow up with the magic. I get it, but don't steal my thunder here.
Hatta00@reddit
Beautiful case. 5.25" floppies drives are $75 a pop on their own. MPC branded CD drive is certainly an artifact.
These specs are perfect for a Wing Commander machine.
Jlzzleizzle@reddit (OP)
Man, I haven't thought about that game in years. Such a fun one. I also have Chips Challenge, Wolfenstein, Sim City, and Duke Nukem. I still have the original Warcraft on floppies around here somewhere. I played the shit out of that game! Oh, and my dad got me hooked on D/Generation.
wingman3091@reddit
Practice your retrobrighting skills!
Jlzzleizzle@reddit (OP)
This would be my first. I imagine a first of many. We don't see these come through very often. The guy that does our ewaste said he just threw 8 Apple IIc in the landfill last month. I envisioned choking him out.
66659hi@reddit
Depends on if that yellowing is cigarette gunk or not. I don't save anything coated with nicotine, it's just so painful to clean off and is so gross.
Potential_Copy27@reddit
Use toothpaste - I learned that one from a long-time cleaning lady.
Dab a little toothpaste on a damp cloth and start cleaning - the nicotine comes off quite easily. It's especially effective on plastic and metal.
Once done, simply wipe or rinse things off with water.
It's much more efficient than cleaning things off with cleaning solutions - I'd say it's at most 1/10th of the work...
Jlzzleizzle@reddit (OP)
Someone else said toothpaste too. I have a bunch of expired travel sized ones. I'll give that a shot tomorrow.
namek0@reddit
Sunshine and moving fresh air (over a span of weeks lol) can make a huge difference, after a deep scrub obviously
66659hi@reddit
The nicotine tar is gross to even touch. I have had a couple of machines and a couple of pieces of stereo equipment and the tar coats it. It smells so bad and I have to wash my hands every time I even touch anything that has nicotine junk on it.
nmrk@reddit
I used contact cleaner. LOTS of it.
codykonior@reddit
10000% refurbish. This looks like a dream!!!!
Jlzzleizzle@reddit (OP)
I was having dreams about playing Chips Challenge. I think refurbish is the correct option!
nmrk@reddit
Just from seeing that, I want to go wash my hands.
Jlzzleizzle@reddit (OP)
Oh, trust, I sure did. And sanitized. It was sticky. Oddly, it smelled like carpet fresh and nothing else. It had me sneezing like crazy though.
displayboi@reddit
Damn, I've never seen a keyboard so yellowed, i'm guessing lots and lots of cigarettes over the years?
Potential_Copy27@reddit
It does look like cigarette staining - at least most of it.
Toothpaste can clean nicotine quite quickly and effectively, and helps remove the smell to boot - it works both in the house and for computer parts :-)
Jlzzleizzle@reddit (OP)
Toothpaste! Wow, how interesting. I'll give that a shot. We have tons of those expired travel size ones.
ApatheistHeretic@reddit
You can smell it coming, but it's one of the old keyboards heavy enough to beat a man to death with then still be usable afterwards.
TygerTung@reddit
These PCs are getting really hard to find. Don't recycle it. I'd be refurbishing it for sure.
Jlzzleizzle@reddit (OP)
I'm going to try to get it to post tomorrow. If it posts, I will start cleaning it up too. I pulled it from the recycling pile before they picked up, but just barely.
Jlzzleizzle@reddit (OP)
I took a few more pics today. We were so busy, I didn't get a chance to do much. It seems to have everything it needs to boot. Hopefully tomorrow I can make some progress. https://imgur.com/a/0z1TyqJ
Junior_Budget_3721@reddit
I have that same case with a P3 700mhz - Voodoo 2 SLI setup...beautiful machine.
eulynn34@reddit
I need a baby AT case like that
9646gt@reddit
I’d absolutely LOVE to buy the computer itself! Such a beautiful case that just needs some solid TLC!
donlafferty4343@reddit
This would be a great project for someone. It can all be cleaned, even the nicotine-stained keyboard.
NightmareJoker2@reddit
I kinda want the CD-ROM drive with the Multimedia PC logo on it… 🫠

Retrobright
If you don't want to go through the trouble, I can consider buying it from you
Sushi-And-The-Beast@reddit
Holy hell. I had that printer :)
Stimbes@reddit
That is the exact minitower case we had as our family computer when I was a kid. It had a 286 16mhz cpu with 1 mb of ram. It was custom built by some local computer store back the. I would love to find a case like that again.
