Rush, and subdivisions

To me, there are few songs that capture the mid 80's like Subdivisions. One of my favorite songs, and remember hearing it played at mixers; that is what we called dances. It was a simple time, but we could all relate to subdivisions and malls. If you like subdivisions, let's give a thumbs up.

One of their first songs using the synthesizer in place of the lead guitar

All of my clients and servers at home are named after Rush songs: including Subdivisions.

Any escape might help to smooth the unattractive truth. But the suburbs have no charms to soothe the restless dreams of youth.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard a song by Rush. What’s another band in that genre?
Feeling-Mistake-8584@reddit (OP)
They are in the progressive rock genre, but they have a really unique sound and to my ear, nobody really sounds like them. Others in the space are Yes, Emerson Lake and Palmer, and Pink Floyd. Would be interested to hear what others say.

Like so many Rush masterpieces, the lyrics of Subdivisions are just brilliant, thoughtful, perfection. They and the powerful way they are expressed in the music and in Geddy's vocals still resonate deeply with me long after I first was "drawn like moths" to this song in my youth.

Be cool or be cast out.
Frigidspinner@reddit
I was "Cast out" and the fact that these incredible musicians and writers could "see" me was incredibly valuable
Feeling-Mistake-8584@reddit (OP)
could listen to that for hours
RandyBeaman@reddit
To this day if I find myself driving the country at night I think of it as the "far unlit unknown".
MetalTrek1@reddit
One of my favorite Rush songs. And I can definitely relate to the lyrics. 🤘

I felt like I lived the video

Oh so my favorite story of all! They came out here to play in Kansas City. Stayed way after the end of the concert. Trying to sober up and let traffic get out of the way cuz the parking lot was always a disaster. They were throwing out guitar picks and I was standing politely at the edge of the stage And Neil happened to just see me, and I don't remember exactly what he said to me I think it was something like hey do you want something? And I said sure so we reach behind his back got me a pair of a sticks and the only thing I do remember he told me he handed them to me and other people were seeing what was going on he said run. I booked it so fast up those amphitheater steps I'm amazed I didn't fall and knock myself out. Still have them 25 plus years later!

Neil knows what's up!

Back in late 1986 or early 1987 when I was a senior in high school, I considered myself a Rush fan. I had Moving Pictures, Grace Under Pressure, 2112, Caress of Steel, and Exit...Stage Left. I was amazed to find out that there was an album that was released between Moving Pictures and Grace Under Pressure.
When I first saw the video for Subdivisions, I bonded to it immediately. That kid in the video was me, nerdy kid playing Tempest in the arcade.
A few years later, after I graduated from college, I was living in an apartment complex called Spring Hill Lake, in Prince George's County, MD. My parents had divorced, and my mom was feuding with her side of the family over my grandfather's will after he had passed in June of 1992, so I became somewhat estranged from them. It was a pretty lonely time for me. And I used to go for long walks around the complex listening to various tapes on my Walkman. One of my favorites was Signals. There was a point in my route where I walked on a bridge that went over the Capital Beltway, and I would stop over one of the loops (inner or outer) and watch the oncoming traffic with Subdivisions playing in my headphones.
I had grown up living in increasing rural areas, but then ended up going to school at the University of Maryland, College Park, living in Spring Hill Lake (the largest apartment complex on the east coast (at the time at least,) and working in Washington D.C. one block away from the White House. And true to Subdivisions, I eventually made my way back to the suburbs. I now live in a quiet neighborhood surrounded by farms in a small town in northern Virginia. It's s nice combination of the three houses I lived in with my parents while growing up, with "lighted streets on quiet nights."

I grew up in Toronto and was a teenager in the late 70s. I've seen Rush multiple times and have never heard a song I don't love. Sub Divisions kind of makes me sad, in a reminiscing kind of way for my younger years. Rush is amazing.
evilJaze@reddit
Must hit especially hard today considering pretty much all of Southern Ontario is basically a sea of Toronto subdivisions from Barrie to St. Catherines.
samebatchannel@reddit
Saw the Presto tour in 1990. It was a good show
NateQuarry@reddit
Saw it in Portland
skbugco@reddit
Funny- we were at the same show! That show, one of 3 times I’ve seen Rush live, was the beginning of a really crazy night. Without giving the whole story away, let’s just say that when the rabbit popped outta the top hat, my chemically enhanced brain wasn’t ready for it.

One of my favorites. Signals is a great album all around.
I've been listening to "By-Tor and the Snow Dog" on repeat ever since the kiddo dug up my vinyl copy of Fly By Night a few days ago. At least it's better than whatever pop stuff is going on. Give me that 7/4 War Furor, please.
Erok2112@reddit
You should check out Crown Lands. Two guys from Canada who just kill it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WOsOXLixWoY Its like a missing Rush album from '78
Commercial_Wind8212@reddit
i liked the whole album, many didn't. boomer here
ParadiddlediddleSaaS@reddit
Hard to duplicate or surpass Moving Pictures. I love Signals personally.
spackletr0n@reddit
I had the good fortune to be at the Vancouver show in the final tour, when they brought out a famous violinist and played Losing It. Still gives me chills.

I like this version of Subdivisons by Allegaeon. https://open.spotify.com/track/1eORFrFz6HEwXiSVLj6EdJ
bobopolis5000@reddit
Was just thinking about that song today. Now I have to go give Signals a listen.
Feeling-Mistake-8584@reddit (OP)
Just a great song. Give it a spin on the record player
Fish-Weekly@reddit
Sprawling on the fringes of the city. In geometric order. An insulated border. In between the bright lights. And the far unlit unknown.
Neil Peart had such a gift with lyrics. One of many great songs.
guachi01@reddit
I love "Subdivisions". I have no idea where I heard it first as it never made the Billboard 100 but I remember hearing it about the time it was released.
Uncle_Hate@reddit
Check out a cover version of the song by a band called Allegaeon.🤌
ScreamIntoTheDark@reddit
I just listened to it. They certainly do the song justice! Thanks for the tip.
Mako_@reddit
I think Signals is better than Moving Pictures, but that’s just me.
Impressive_Crazy_223@reddit
Still kicking myself for not seeing them live.
Feeling-Mistake-8584@reddit (OP)
same...I remember I was taking my daughter to her club VB tourney when Pert died.....when he dies, it is hard to keep Rush
Careless-Gazelle-247@reddit
I got to see them twice: Counterparts and Test For Echo. After Peart passed, I saw Primus at their Tribute to Kings tour. They hit that first note of "A Farewell to Kings" and I teared up a little, finally realizing I would never see Rush again.
edasto42@reddit
The lyrics really hit home to me that I had to escape suburbia. I never felt comfortable there. That song captured a lot of the angst I had because of living there. Come to find out later that there have been many studies that link suburban living and depression.
Fun fact- a friend of mine was featured in the Rush documentary, Beyond the Lighted Stage, talking about this song. He is the biggest Rush fan I know with all sorts of memorabilia, autographed stuff, even a pair of Peart’s drumsticks from a show. And in what makes perfect sense-he’s an excellent drummer too.
Feeling-Mistake-8584@reddit (OP)
I loved suburbia. I lived subrurbia, this song captured it
edasto42@reddit
To each their own. In my area the racism, individualism, and blandness of it killed me. I was never the type that accepted the prescribed homogeneity of a burb. Things moved to slow for me too. Ok rant over haha.
Feeling-Mistake-8584@reddit (OP)
I respect that, but Lord, there was no overt racism in our group. We played sports and busted each others balls all day. We didnt over think what we were doing.....and stood up for each guy
edasto42@reddit
I think that’s a big telltale difference. I was not a sports person and didn’t believe that the status quo was something I wanted to aim for. I was always way more interested in arts, experimentation, pushing beyond what was the given. That kind of thought gets people labeled as weirdos and outcasts. Which makes the lyrics of Subdivisions really hit home. I was that kid.
Nowhere is the dreamer or the misfit so alone.
But the suburbs have no charms to soothe the restless dreams of youth.
CawlinAlcarz@reddit
Man, what a throwback.
Good_Nyborg@reddit
So damn great, they're even immortalized on Futurama.
Though I'm likely guilty of saying that line at least once back in the day too. Anybody else?
Cutlass327@reddit
No matter the song, you cannot ever go wrong with Rush!!
catching_comets@reddit
Signals dropped 3 days before my 15th birthday. I had been a fan since Permanent Waves, but Subdivisions really hit me because I felt like that kid in the video.
Moonchildbeast@reddit
Loved it, reminds me of senior year even tho the ding is prob ten years older than that.
summonthegods@reddit
Bonus: my mean mother hated that song.
MikaJade856@reddit
I was in 10th grade when that song came out and had just started at a new school in a new town, it hit hard!
Feeling-Mistake-8584@reddit (OP)
I love that memory........you and I are same age, the song grew on me....love it the older I get, but I remember being 17 and loving it
Mindless-Ad2125@reddit
Favorite all time song. Take my 16 yr old son to Rush Tribute bands. Glad he likes them too!
GrumpyCatStevens@reddit
Not my favorite Rush song, but definitely one of them. And it’s the one I can relate to the most.
_TallOldOne_@reddit
Not my favorite song on Signals, but an excellent song!
Ronald-J-Mexico@reddit
I love signals. This is an awesome tune.
I think countdown doesn’t get its due. Freakin great song.
I know Alex doesn’t like how this turned out. Still a masterpiece to me
Taurusmoon66@reddit
Being from Long Island, nothing says gen-x hometown. Shopping malls and 30 minute train/drive from Manhattan, that timeless old attraction. Difference is now the far unlit unknown is in your hand every moment, everyday. Arguably it no longer exists.
Upper-Affect5971@reddit
My favorite rush song.

great song...could listen on replay for ever
