People in the UK used to travel to the Mediterranean for nice weather.
Now the Mediterranean is traveling to the UK.
Crowley-Barns@reddit
The UK should set the failing coastal towns up as modern resorts. Free buses from major population centers. Tax-free booze.
Why Ryanair-it to Spain for a Full English and 1 euro pints when you can hop on the bus to Margate or Blackpool where you don’t even have to SHOUT to get the locals to understand you?
Bring back domestic tourism. Make Brexit mean Brexit.
sleadbetterzz@reddit
I live down the road from Blackpool and tbh it is always really busy during half terms and summer holidays, I think it really is having a quiet resurgence.
upthetruth1@reddit
Problem is they’re mad at British Muslims going to Blackpool for a holiday and so they’re voting Reform
sleadbetterzz@reddit
Gammon is as gammon does unfortunately
Crowley-Barns@reddit
Nice!
Are the Illuminations still a big draw? :)
sleadbetterzz@reddit
Yeh it was packed for the switch on the other week, there so much for kids to do there I guess it's an easy, cheap holiday for working class parents. Ironically what it was when it was first built.
N3KR0VULPES@reddit
Only thing we have to fix is how it'll cost you more for an AirBNB to stay two nights in Southend on Sea than it does to go to Majorca for a fortnight.
DonutOk3958@reddit
I noticed you put up a photo that comes from or was used by the publication The Guardian. That was interesting. Would you happen to know how to get someone at the Guardian to read the climate science I send them, and then respond back, for or against, but respond no matter what. Can you help get that done?
Late-Scale@reddit
Still 20 degrees into September. It's the drought I'm worried about. If we get even a semi dry winter we will be screwed next summer. We started this year at 100% water capacity and now down to just over 30%. Imagine if we started at 70?! We need rain over winter badly
TheOldBean@reddit
We also need to stop relying on private companies for water. They have no incentive to make improvements to storage, etc for the inevitable drier climate.

Hottest summer so far ™
anonymous_matt@reddit
Coldest summer of the next 1000 years!
Sapient_Cephalopod@reddit
more like 5 million years with the way things might end up
triassic baby here we come
anonymous_matt@reddit
Well, the good news is that we won't be around to confirm which it is q:
(I just, humans are like cockroaches, I honestly think some few of us will survive almost anything)
Ok-Elderberry-7088@reddit
I think you think too highly of humans. Cockroaches could survive almost anything, but not us. I honestly lean more towards total human extinction than not. Our odds are not as good as you think.
breatheb4thevoid@reddit
The dark reality is the final one of us will probably be one of the least deserving and richest alive....starved to death in a frozen metal sarcophagus in some gain attempt to thwart fate.
Maybe it's poetic, how our own imagined power over life really never mattered in the end if we betrayed our cradle for it.
Aggravating-Scene548@reddit
When the AMOC collapses we may have winters like Canada so who knows
Ok-Elderberry-7088@reddit
Our winters are honestly much milder than they used to be. Last Christmas I was wearing shorts and a T-shirt.
thinkB4WeSpeak@reddit
The poles are also experiencing extended heat waves and don't forget about the fires.
obinice_khenbli@reddit
Obviously this is bad on many levels. Absolutely.
But it's also been such a lovely year! My seasonal affective disorder has been non existent since our gorgeous hot sunny Spring, it's been the nicest year I can remember.
I've been so much happier every morning, my cold triggered eczema has completely disappeared, and I can finally wear the clothes I like and leave my windows open at night for some sleep enhancing fresh air.
I lived in California for a while and to be honest that climate suited me perfectly, go figure haha.
Obviously the fact that the climate here in the UK is changing this much is bad, but at least very temporarily, for me personally, there's been a little bit of a silver lining this year.
Gosh it's been so nice. Even when it's been hot or was such a pleasant non-humid heat, very unlike the UK, that!
ansibleloop@reddit
We're going to be BBQing in the apocalypse
JonathanApple@reddit
Oregon I guess the same for many, so much hotter and drier, although I miss the gloom and cold.
Fast-Armadillo1074@reddit
I’ve been developing my own climate classification system and using it to compare climate projections and the data is telling me that much of the UK will eventually have a Mediterranean climate due to global warming.
j_mantuf@reddit (OP)
What’s happening now cannot be stopped or changed. No shame in enjoying decent weather.
AnAncientOne@reddit
Not just the hottest but the hottest by some distance compared with the other hottest years.
happyluckystar@reddit
The planet is moving to become uninhabitable for humans. Most people are morons and are not willing to sacrifice even a sliver of life quality to help save the planet.
A failed species.
After a few hundred million years the only remains will be a very thin layer the byproducts of plastic breakdown. A few very hearty structures might remain discernible as intentional structures. Such as nuclear power plant walls and some granite Wall Street buildings. I guess those will be an enigma to any potential intelligent life if it ever comes again.
Journalists keep getting killed and scientific research faces defunding if it doesn't support the economic pumping narrative. The runaway train is rolling down the track at full speed. Even the biggest beetle on the track isn't going to slow it down.

Even hotter than 1976?
SaturdayPlatterday@reddit
I remember 1976 as being dry rather than incredibly hot, the last few years have felt hotter to me.

I’m definitely burning more easily.
Unfair_Creme9398@reddit
Less atmospheric dimming indeed.
Unfair_Creme9398@reddit
The summer of 1976 was both hot and dry in the UK.
Although the other seasons of 1976 were much colder than today (compared to the last 10 years).
SaturdayPlatterday@reddit
I remember the lawn developing these massive cracks, and finding dead moles. And swarms of ladybirds.
Unfair_Creme9398@reddit
What’s the earliest hot summer that you remember in the UK? 1959?
SaturdayPlatterday@reddit
No it would be ‘76, I wasn’t born until very late 60’s.
Unfair_Creme9398@reddit
Ah ok, other hot summers in the UK were 1983, 1995, 2003, 2006 etc.
SaturdayPlatterday@reddit
I remember 2003 clearly, that was sweltering.
Unfair_Creme9398@reddit
Although summer 1976 was only hot in Western Europe at the time, Eastern Europe had a poor, wet, gloomy summer.

Hottest summer on record, so far.

Why don't they just close the Met Office?

The UK had its hottest summer on record in 2025, with an average temperature of 16.1°C, breaking the previous record from 2018. Multiple heatwaves, with highs of 35.8°C (96F) and low rainfall led to widespread water shortages. Experts link the extreme heat to climate change.
