I'm liking this immigration shift where those coming into the West are expected to assimilate into our norms, instead of us having to change ourselves to match the countries these people fled from.
TheBoizAreBackInTown@reddit
When did we ever in the history of modern Western civilization try to seriously change our society and culture to accommodate migrants?
where_Is_My_Towel@reddit
I feel like it's transparently true that Europe's been bending over backwards for the past \~10 years to accommodate the cultures of recent migrant arrivals.
TheBoizAreBackInTown@reddit
Can you give me examples of such laws? Or maybe sociological researches? Or anything of substance? "Transparently true" is hardy a good argument, is it?
Sardes__@reddit
For one, Denmark banned Quran burnings.
BuzLightbeerOfBarCmd@reddit
Well, in the UK we've had national debate and multiple enquiries into the gangs of largely foreign origin men grooming and raping children and the subsequent cover-ups aimed at preventing "community tensions". I would say that qualifies as bending over backwards not to upset recent imports. We're also debating whether to ban cousin marriage or let the taxpayer pay further costs for the disabled offspring that the immigrant communities which practice it produce. Then Germany had that little thing where gangs of refugees raped over a thousand women around ten years ago. Multiple riots, bombings, stabbings and vehicular attacks, massacres, a beheading or two. You obviously know about all of these events, but you pretend you don't.
kaeldrakkel@reddit
None of that sounds like bending over backwards to accommodate anyone. Sounds like you guys aren't prosecuting crime and rape, which I highly doubt.
BeirutiPenguin@reddit
Its always crickets with these guys
MrNaoB@reddit
Thanks to school my mom is tired of chicken, rice, coscos and oat grain as the school she worked at didnt serve pork or potato or any kind of pasta.
username1543213@reddit
America and Australia are the examples you’re looking for. Society’s completely changed to accommodate English migrants during the colonisation
TheHeavyMetalNerd@reddit
Had me in the first half...
ShootmansNC@reddit
I don't think that's the example the OP wanted to hear.
Monterenbas@reddit
We have to put concrete road block on every major pedestrian path and christmas market, since we took in massive amount of muslim immigrants, that’s a pretty substantial change.
teethandteeth@reddit
Bro we have a lot of responsibility for why those people have to flee in the first place. They would rather have stayed home too.
Monterenbas@reddit
The largest immigrant group in Europe are the Turks.
What is the responsability of Europe for making them fled Turkey, exactly?
crogameri@reddit
Maybe because one of the poorest countries in Europe can only hold so many migrants? And also because Turkey was actively bombing their homes too...
Monterenbas@reddit
Turks are moving to Europe because Turkey was bombing Syria?
crogameri@reddit
Sorry misread the original comment to mwan the millions of Syrian refugees in Turkey. But no, the Turks aren't moving to Germany now, they were moving en masse back during the cold war ahen the west backed dictatorships of all kinds Turkey.
Monterenbas@reddit
Europe get way more refugees when they’re not backing dictatorship tho. Should have supported Bashar and Kadafi.
crogameri@reddit
Well they either actively back them or they bomb the shit out of them creating a refugee crisis
Monterenbas@reddit
So basically whatever happen, it’s european fault, lol, must be convenient to always have someone to blame for their own failure.
Yahay505@reddit
The three billion euros you paid to certain someones swiss bank account to keep refugees from entering europe is a good place to start
Monterenbas@reddit
What does it have to do with turks migrating in mass to Europe, since the 60’s?
bxzidff@reddit
Did Sweden?
teethandteeth@reddit
Yeah. The entire Western world benefits from cheap resources and labor from everywhere else.
DancingDumpling@reddit
5 trillion refugees to china then!
TheLastSamurai101@reddit
If China destabilises parts of Africa for resources, the international community should absolutely push for them to take responsibility for the human cost.
teethandteeth@reddit
Yeah, I'm wondering if that's on the horizon in some form. But for right now, like... we keep buying hella shit manufactured for stupid cheap in China, so of course lots of people from China emigrate to Western countries.
crogameri@reddit
Your country was literally built on people refusing to assimilate and combining their cultures in a melting pot.
trump-a-phone@reddit
“Your country” because the Ottomans were very accepting of Armenians, the Arab Sudanese very accepting of African sudanese, Japanese very accepting of Koreans, etc etc.
The only place in the world I can’t list like this is Antartica for some reason.
crogameri@reddit
What? You have the USA flair. I am talking about America. The most overwhelmingly militarily powerful country on the planet is a mix of people who refused to integrate and mixed a bunch of cultures together.
Archarchery@reddit
People are waking up to the fact that there are a large number of people who would like to immigrate to their countries for the economic benefits, but who actively do not want to assimilate into their culture and society, and in fact view their culture and society with contempt.
Assessing potential immigrants for their likely contributions to the country and filtering out those who will not integrate is just common fucking sense returning to immigration policies. There are a huge number of people out there from lower-income countries who are smart, hardworking, and would integrate well and who would like to immigrate to your country; there’s no need to accept just anyone. Why take the worst of the worst when you could instead take the best of the best?
scientifick@reddit
I do find it wild that as someone with an Australian passport and an advanced degree the bar is so high for me to live and work in a European country, meanwhile there are absolute degenerates already living amongst who contribute nothing to society being granted citizenship.
_lindt_@reddit
And your comment proves yet again how higher education does fuck all for ones critical thinking.
Lawd_Fawkwad@reddit
I can understand that refugees are allowed to be leeches because the principle of non-refoulement means they can't be deported.
Nonetheless it's crazy seeing large immigrant communities with barbaric beliefs and an outright hostility to their new country be coddled while hardworking, qualified, legal migrants who will have a positive economic RoI are made to jump through a million hoops.
Something is very wrong when it's easier to get permanent residency by coming to work as unqualified labor receiving welfare benefits than by pursuing an education and being able to contribute in-demand skills to the economy.
showerbridge@reddit
I swear the mindset of people who are individualists to the core is a disease...
What makes Sweden Sweden is the fact that they take care of the less fortunate and vulnerable.
Ah okay you're just racist... A small brained one
showerbridge@reddit
Damns maybe change your attitude?
Like the first thing you do is fight people who are less fortunate than you... What is wrong with you?
max_mou@reddit
Damn, what kind of cope is this?
TheLastSamurai101@reddit
Classic Aussie cope honestly.
ShootmansNC@reddit
Because they're europeans born in europe.
Or do you believe only non-whites are "degenerates"?
Pyro-Bird@reddit
There are European/white immigrants and they cause no problem. If they do cause problems, they are deported to their home country. Refugees, on the other hand are overwelmingly non-European.However, Africans and Asians are not Europeans. They are never refered as Europeans and nobody considers them European. Being born in Europe doesn't make one European. I'm white/European and if I was living in Germany and got German citizenship, that doesn't make me German because German is also an ethnicity. You cannot change your ethnic identity because that will always be a part of you and I'm proud of my ethnic identity.
ShootmansNC@reddit
This is your brain on racism.
kapsama@reddit
It doesn't make you German but your kids and grandkids will be German. Hundreds of thousands of Germans are originally Poles that came back when to work in mining. Now all that's left is their Polish last names.
seiryuu-abi@reddit
Have heard similar complaints from Americans and Indians all with degrees even for those who only wanted to temporarily stay there.
Although the Swedish aren’t as bad at the Swiss lol. Those guys had villagers trying to deny Nancy Holton citizenship just because she had an issue with cow bells. It turns out she’d been right with cow bells but they took that shit personally lol.
Jotun35@reddit
Swiss being like "I've got a fever and the only prescription is more cowbell!"
bippos@reddit
I mean nothing will happen if you visit the places but going there with a camera like it’s a petting zoo aint the smartest idea.
Blarg_III@reddit
She also took issue with the local church bells, hunting, the village's traditional piglet race and apparently a host of other issues. One of the people responsible for the rejection was quoted as saying:
Takemypennies@reddit
Honestly, fair.
Suspicious-Limit8115@reddit
Try shouting some Russian words at your local vagrant alcoholic in Europe, 50% chance they reply despite being only 5-10% of the population.
barc0debaby@reddit
The royal families and nobility?
MechaAristotle@reddit
There is one royal family and I'm not sure what 'nobility' you're referring to lol?
jokumi@reddit
It’s an interesting contrast in Europe on Reddit. As in, on the one hand people celebrate places like Barcelona trying to turn away tourists because they are destroying the traditional fabric of Barcelona life and culture, while demanding that places accept migrants. It’s what I expect.
Khers@reddit
To Impose is a bit of a stretch. There's been an investigation on what it could mean that was released about 2 months ago, it was very vague and confusing and so far widely unpopular from what I can tell.
Sweden has had a bit of an authoritarian turn, earlier this year they imposed a law which makes it illegal to insult a policeman.
What laws would be proposed based on the investigation is still unclear. But the way things are looking they have 1 year to implement it as it looks like the left coalition is poised to win the election september 2026.
Jotun35@reddit
As a French person living in Sweden: Sweden is becoming more and more like France... And it's not a good thing.
Yama_retired2024@reddit
I met an older guy in Sweden last year.. he got jailed for 4 weeks for screaming down the phone at a Social Services worker..
He had been travelling for years around the world and was back in Sweden and trying to sort out his Social benefits..
atamajakki@reddit
Huh?
PotatoAppleFish@reddit
This was published in 2023.
EH1987@reddit
They've been yapping about this for years prior to 2023 even. It's always been pandering to reactionaries in lieu of actually doing anything to prevent crimes.
PotatoAppleFish@reddit
I figured as much. It seems like that’s a common problem, but I’ve never seen an adequate explanation for why “Western” governments, for lack of a better term, seem overly willing to capitulate to a 5-10% minority of far-right agitators at the slightest hint of pushback, whereas any similar phenomenon re: even the moderate left is hard to find anywhere.
Ok_Echo9527@reddit
It's because the far-right and liberals are more aligned in their fundamental political beliefs than liberals are with leftists.
SlickSlin@reddit
They use the term ”liberal” very generously
rei0@reddit
It’s always rich to hear about the virtues of western civilization when every where you look it’s pedos and grifters and genocide supporters. But, yah, let me hear your thoughts on the “third world” and their “incompatible culture” again.
EH1987@reddit
Don't forget the endless coups, child slavery and mass murder required to uphold western civilisation.
cultish_alibi@reddit
They are setting the Overton window, with neoliberalism as the 'left' and fascism as the 'right'. It's to maintain the illusion of choice. The neolibs know that the general public would be too scared to vote for fascism, so they portray themselves as the only sane option.
Of course, this didn't work and the fascists are now taking over in some places. But the neolibs are morons who have no other ideas so they are STILL doing the same thing.
eeeking@reddit
Quite. The problem "centrists" have is that they simply don't believe that the far right are acting genuinely. That is, they think that nobody would seriously hold such views, or at least that they're genuinely held by a tiny minority. It should be sufficient to simply let the actual facts be known, no?
As a consequence they ignore the actual risk posed by the far right, which then leads to things such as Brexit or Trump being elected. Recent rhetoric around illegal immigration in the UK is another example, with asylum seekers (who are not illegally present in the UK) becoming a target of the far right. The Labour government has then pandered to this notion, ironically re-enforcing the far right message.
Gavin Newsome's approach in California seems to be one way of disarming this effect, but might not be broadly applicable. The "centre" and "left" really need to improve their game in this respect.
ShootmansNC@reddit
Because as a rule the super rich are on the side that far-right minority, and they are the ones calling the shots.
boredinthegta@reddit
Yeah, I don't know why Islamism is tolerated by Western Governments either.
EH1987@reddit
Because it's merely the rhetoric, not the actual reason. It's easy to point at an outgroup and blame them for whatever ills plague the masses.
You may not like it but it's rarely any deeper than the fact that far right movements don't threaten capital in the same way leftist movements do, what's more they actually serve the interests of the capitalist class by opposing workers rights, social justice and so on, which is why capital is happy to align with them whenever leftist movements gain momentum.
Mean-Goat@reddit
There are tons of high-profile rapes and violent crimes by these migrants all over Europe. Maybe it's no capitulation. Maybe there is really an issue.
TheBoizAreBackInTown@reddit
It is a media issue: immigrant crimes are clickbait heaven, which is why these cases are always in the media. That would become a real issue if any serious crime research or statistic actually showed that immigrants do more crime than the domestics (when age, sex, financial status and other parameters are taken into account). No research shows this, which means this anti-immigrant rhetoric is a populist tool, nothing more.
Mean-Goat@reddit
It doesn't matter what the statistics are. Anyone who does violent crimes needs to be locked up for the rest of their lives regardless of race or origin. Stuff like grooming gangs in the UK happen because of lax judges and police not wanting to prosecute. There would be less resistance to immigration if there were harsh penalties for these people. I really dont care if a rapist or a murderer is legally or illegally in a country or not. I want them harshly punished as much as possible.
TheBoizAreBackInTown@reddit
It really does matter what the statistics say, because the prevailing narrative is that immigrants are criminals coming from incompatible cultures - all of which is fabricated ragebait. I completely agree with prosecuting all criminals equally and imposing more serious punishments for truly hideous crimes, but that's not an immigration issue, it's a judicial system failure.
Mean-Goat@reddit
As a woman, i think it's valid to question whether some cultures are compatible with a free society. I really dont have much desire to respect cultures that think I should be covered up.
TheBoizAreBackInTown@reddit
I agree, religious laws and ideas like these have no place in modern society. But it doesn't mean the whole culture and every person from that culture is immediately incompatible with our "Western" way of life. The way to solve these issues is to integrate, educate and assimilate, not discriminate or exclude from society - this only leads to more extremism.
Mean-Goat@reddit
At what cost do you do this integration? And what if they refuse and tell you that they will never submit to your culture? How much money time and effort must go into assimilation?
TheBoizAreBackInTown@reddit
These are all valid questions which haven't really been answered (at least to my knowledge). I've never delved deep into the economy of assimilation and integration policies. The only thing I know is that inducing rage in certain parts of population to mask the big problems Europe is facing isn't constructive at all. In fact it's dividing both the local population and making sure immigrants can't assimilate properly.
Beliriel@reddit
How is it fabricated ragebait when immigrants and foreigners are overrepresented in sentenced violent crimes like rape and DV?
https://portal.research.lu.se/en/activities/63-percent-of-those-convicted-of-rape-in-sweden-have-an-immigrant
You say statistics matter but then dismiss it as ragebait. What?
TheBoizAreBackInTown@reddit
Raw stats like these aren't too useful. Like I mentioned, every serious research needs to take into the account age, gender, social, financial status and other factors. And every research that does that tends to not find correlations between ethnicity or religion and crime.
croquetas_y_jamon@reddit
Well it is vague enough to stop someone from living there. Something like that is just a way to exert control over any situation.
