Enshittification. The era of YouTube updating their site solely to serve their customers ended long, long ago. The only decisions YouTube makes for their website now serve to appease shareholders and other corporate partners, and to push their own agenda of how *they* want us to use the site.

You’re helping Israel by having ever downloaded it.
I'm not American so they're not using my device to spy on American citizens , and it's not like I have any political power to make politicians not support Israel
Seriously, the algorithm is so insanely bad at understanding why I am watching the videos I choose to watch. It's clearly not a tech issue, because other algorithms aren't nearly as bad. It's not like Steam has a hard time recommending games that sound exactly like what I feel like playing at that particular moment.
Thumbnails get bigger every year to the point that on my 30-inch screen it's still only shows four thumbnails in a row.
That's a toenail at that point. Stylus is my favourite extension, people fix that shit so quickly and I have my unrounded corners and 8 thumbnails per row back.
Also removes the playables section, members-only videos, shorts, community posts, everything that isn't VIDEOS I'M HERE TO WATCH
I just use CustomTube, lots of options and you can even use old YT layouts so I'm using the 2015 one.
I did that when YT decided that only 3 videos could fit in a row instead of 6 and discovered that there was no option for changing that in the settings.
Goodbye constant change, now, I'm just going to stick with that.
I think Google is putting more and more effort into compiling user data and the UI is set up for the most opportunities to collect said data.
I remember during COVID. Spell check and auto correct and the Google keyboard got a notable downgrade and... Well it's a fucking keyboard, You didn't make it worse one day for no reason. You optimized it to better at something other than being a keyboard.
The changes they make are bewildering, like removing tap to seek on mobile, and always defaulting to portrait mode after every video, which is truly enraging.
Stupid people in here paying for YouTube premium and then wonder how they're able to get away with it and why isn't anyone doing anything about it when they're the cause. Just stop paying for it see how they all crumble. You're only held back by a leash made of toilet paper not chains.
Then who cares. Have fun loading up your browser with a revolving door of extensions. Why not just pay the $20 so YouTube’s decisions stop living rent free in your head? Lmfaooo
Because I didn't need to pay them anything for features that were present 10 years ago. And their constant enshitification won't make make me give in and give them my hard earned money.
It literally doesn't. It's a data farm. You give them data with your activity that associates your interests, your purchases, your location, your gender, sexual activity, pregnancy status, pets etc through the content you consume.
Remember that YouTube videos have automatically generated captions - they know exactly what's in every video from more than just the tags like before. Where you pause and replay, where you mouse over the screen, what videos you click on, what words make you instantly stop watching in particular all provide the data above to describe who you are and what you want.
That data is valuable en masse even if you don't view ads because it's an incredibly powerful tool for targeting ads across all of Google for people that do. It's the biggest demographic data pool in history and studying it multiplies the value of all the ads Google provides. It's even better if you do view ads, obviously, because they can target you with your own data, but if you don't it's still going to be the bulk of Google's data for its entire ads program.
Ignoring the fact YouTube is profitable and has been for almost a decade, it would still be worth operating for Google at a loss because of this.
Then use another platform. Except you won’t. I can afford Premium and so can you. Why should they let you watch dozens of hours of content for free every month?
Again, they created the problem and provided "the solution".
The reality is that if maintaining storage servers for 4k HDR whatever content, then just remove that upload option. Anyone can upload a 4k video just because. There's far better ways to monetize the platform than to show an infinite amount of ads
You pay for dozens of goods and services a month and yet you draw the line at your optionally paid video platform. But yeah I’m the shill. Get fucked regard.
YouTube has value. If Google took the site down you’d lose something valuable. If they decide to put up more barriers to entry then that’s their prerogative. You can stop using YouTube at any point but you don’t because it’s worth it despite the ads/paywall.
If it’s that big of a deal then why don’t you use another platform? If YouTube wants to charge more for their service and I think what they’re asking is worth it I’ll pay. Welcome to capitalism. I use YouTube for easily 100+ hours a month for music, background noise, etc., so the effector <20 cents per hour cost is totally fine with me. People complained the same way about Netflix but guess what: their prices keep increasing, their user base keeps shrinking, but they’re making more per user so their profits are growing. Stop acting entitled to services you’re too lazy to pay for.
YouTube premium is great and still relatively cheap. Honestly of all the services I have it would be the last to go.
I don’t get why people hate on other people choosing to pay money for something they want. If you don’t like what YouTube has become, and don’t want to pay for YouTube, just don’t use it!
its so jarring swapping from my computer to my phone for youtube for this reason. i swear the app punishes me with more ads because it knows i use adblocker on my laptop
Sure it is but the guy in charge was the asshole who created YT red and premium and made them into a need because of the excessive ads bordering on the same amount as grey area porn sites .
Little did we know Susan Wojkicki was actually a relatively nice lady who still held back from squeezing users dry.
He's just a bad cop, a lightning rod. He's only there to take flak for Brin and Page, if he did something they didn't like, they would fire him instantly.

I actually prefer it over how Chrome does it as it keeps the tabs readable.
Exurota@reddit
Readable sure, but I know from favicons what my hundreds of tabs are.
FF, even with cvar edits, lets favicons disappear well before a hundred. So now they're all in groups, which is still inconvenient but better.
LanaDelHeeey@reddit
I honestly prefer just memorizing the order of my 45 tabs
Anabiter@reddit

Smaller thumbnails so you didn't have to spend an hour scrolling through everything. ads didn't drag you out of fullscreen.
pkkthetigerr@reddit
Also better algorithm, not suggesting 50 car videos because i looked up one honda review. Better comments that stuck around and didn't change.
