I constantly think about the 2015 cancelled reboot

I remember fans of Xena were so against the reboot and actively spoke out against this reboot and let it be known they won’t watch it, to the point it got cancelled before it ever officially happened lol.
I would love to see what they would have done with it.

I really wanted there to be a reboot, but it wouldn't be with the same actresses. Lucy with Renee has a surreal chemistry on stage, which would already be a huge drawback compared to the original series. Besides, we are in a time when everything is very critical. Then, it would be a couple that would have to have more explicit scenes, a more diverse script, lighter jokes and more realistic effects. I personally prefer the original series, it has that taste of wanting more, even after watching it many times, I still want to watch it again. It's lovely to see Lucy and Renee acting together as a couple.

There was also considerable backlash towards the writer/producer who was in charge of the reboot. Can’t think of his name or be bothered to look it up but he was a legitimate fan of the show and wanted to reboot it for a while. Then he wrote the episode of “The 100” where a the lesbian character Lexa was killed, an episode that became synonymous with the bury your gays trope and birthed “they deserved better” campaign. He pissed the gay ladies off so bad they actively campaigned against his reboot.

You mean Javier Grillo-Marxuach? He wasn't the one who wrote Lexa's death in The 100 - that was Jason Rothenberg.
Grillo-Marxuach said that he would make Xena and Gabrielle's relationship overt and that, if it were his choice, he'd never kill Xena in the end.
I didn't like everything I read on those scripts, but I think that the backlash you mention had to be due to confusion.

He didn’t chose to kill Lexa that was Jason’s choice but he also wrote the episode. Did he get caught up in the backlash maybe a little but once you alienate an audience especially one that would be key in the success of your content it’s pretty hard to overcome that.

I really hate the fact that Lexa died. However, the actress was already leaving the series to be the protagonist in another series. What irritated me most was how Lexa died, wow, she died from a stray bullet, to be serious.

Be glad it never happened...

The original pitch, pilot script and season 1 outline are all out there to read.
It will be interesting to see if the new Xena reboot gets any further than the last!
XyberVoXXX@reddit
If it gets any further than the last, then that means an actual pilot will be shot, or actual casting happens at the very least.
Agent8699@reddit
Except it’s seemingly a big screen movie, not a TV series.
Hour_Dog_4781@reddit
Hollywood is absolutely creatively bankrupt as is. It feels like 90% of what they do is remakes, reboots or sequels. I'm glad the Xena remake didn't happen.
Fandomjunkie2004@reddit
At least it seems the BtVS revival is a continuation and not a reboot. I don’t mind sequels if they’re well-made and it seems like the showrunners actually care about the material, but I too would love to see some lesser-known or new things get made/adapted.

Yeah, I'd actually be down for a reboot that explores the same basic premise & character types from a new angle.
I don't mind changes - that's half the point. But I wasn't crazy about the what I read of the 2015 version.
Jahon_Dony@reddit
It was going to be really bad. Supposedly the writer wanted to severely weaken / emasculate Hercules too, and not have him play a critical part in Xena's reformation or the story.
Owl_Queen101@reddit
Yikes
Pop_Stensbold@reddit
It's online and its godawful in so many ways including that. So glad it never came to fruition. Also hiring a writer from Charmed to do it was not the smartest thing in the world. To be honest I'm not interested in any kind of reboot. I think Xena had its time and it would be hard to recapture the magic now especially without the original actors and writers.
ACalcifiedHeart@reddit
While I too would've been curious to see what they would have done; it would have been impossible to have captured and remade the soul of the original show. And I am not saying that as a diehard Xena stan or anything like that.
Society as a whole has moved on from pretty much every aspect of that show. The attitude and viewer climate is way way different than what it once was.
Xena could be made 1-1 today, and it would be ripped to shreds.
These things are best left to nostalgic rewatches, where they are safe. Not reboots or remakes.
Owl_Queen101@reddit
Exactly it’s a different day. This show fits for the time it was created. It’s cheesy and camp. Nowadays too many things would just be off about it. It’d be all shot on green screen in 4k. And would only have 10 episodes lol. No show today has mastered the humor with silliness that was so common back in the day.
primal_slayer@reddit
it wasnt cancelled because of fans, they couldnt get the script to where they wanted and moved on
DanieXJ@reddit
Again, why retread (I mean, other than Hollywood has no actual creativity in it any more).
Reboots almost always suck. You either have something that is dismissive of the original or something that is only one Memberberry connected to another conne Ted to another.
So, something different and new in the world we know and love, sure, but a reboot, no, for the live of the gods please no.
