If these places have been colonized to the point of having no more wealth or resources, why exactly are the Chinese spending billions to open mining operations there?
Osipovark@reddit
also as if people who lived there had any idea about their resources before Europeans came.
VirtueSignalLost@reddit
This reminds of me of all the old washed up artists who figured out they could charge royalties from spotify for their old songs. Some of them make more mooney now than they did in their heyday due to stupid intellectual property laws.
serious_sarcasm@reddit
African minerals have been extracted and used in Europe and Asia since the fucking Bronze Age.
A lot of the minerals we are extracting now were only discovered to be useful in the last fucking century.
Y’all are delusional.
Osipovark@reddit
I don't exactly understand how anything you've said makes any one of us delusional.
The fact that some minerals or whatever has been extracted since the Bronze Age doesn't prove anything. Lapis lazuli has been mined in Afghanistan since 7th century BC. So what? The only thing it proves is that international trade has been a thing since the Bronze Age at least. It doesn't prove that primitive tribes of Subsaharan Africa had any idea on how to use their natural resources or had any idea that they had those resources in the first place. I am sure you can find some exception to that rule in one of the Egypt adjacent kingdoms of the Eastern Africa but what i've said is largely true regardless.
serious_sarcasm@reddit
Again, no one knew things like cobalt and lithium were useful materials until the last fucking century.
Osipovark@reddit
You don't get it.
serious_sarcasm@reddit
And you are an ignorant and racist bigot whose opinion is worth less than shit.
boilingfrogsinpants@reddit
China acts essentially like a loan shark to these countries. They lend them more money than they'll ever be able to pay back so they default on the loan, allowing China to scoop up "free resources" as payment.
They haven't been colonized to the point of having no wealth or resources, but all of the wealth and resources that were extracted went to foreign countries. And the wealth didn't stay within the country to develop it further.
damnmaster@reddit
Massive projecting considering Neo colonialism was the MO of a lot of countries like the UK.
Also this conspiracy has been proven false. China has since restructured a lot of the debt or outright forgiven them.
Even fucking funnier the term debt trap diplomacy has since been used to describe actions taken by the International Monetary Fund when applying for a loan with them
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Debt-trap_diplomacy
You can read dozens of independent academic sources on the matter. None that have any ties to China. You could also read updated news sources since that original period to see what I’m saying.
https://www.google.com/search?q=china+and+debt+trap+diplomacy&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-sg&client=safari
The reason for this is much more reasonable if you have any idea how international politics works. China cannot force these countries because it does not have global hegemony. In fact, for most of the past 50 years, no one has really liked China.
More recently they’ve worked to clean up their image, this has since given them more allies. They have also gone to all these broke as shit countries that the IMF has been unwilling to fundz Why? Because the enemy of my enemy is my friend. And a lot of these states have not been allies to their colonial masters for obvious reasons. The IMF won’t provide funds without requesting for the very thing you accuse China of or by enforcing austerity measures.
There are justifications as to why the IMF won’t lend too, a lot of these states are extremely volatile and often corrupt. Without oversight, it’s easy for the money to end up overspent and wasted.
The difference here is people don’t realise how fucking rich China has become due to being the world’s factory. It’s estimated they’ve raised about 600 MILLION people out of poverty. There are no countries that even have citizens to that number (other than India).
So all that money and no friends, what do you do? Spend money without giving a fuck. Buy up allies and reform the Silk Road of antiquity (which is really the whole point of this endeavour).
There doesn’t need to be a malicious conspiracy because the incentive to being a good friend to these countries are far higher. It’s this constant failure that is causing the united states to fall further and further behind. A complete lack of understanding of foreign policy leaving them plays checkers when China is playing chess. Countries aren’t caricatures, foreign policy in the modern day is far more nuanced and quiet (unless you’re Israel lmao)
I imagine you also believe Iran woke up one day and just decided to hate Israel and America because their god told them to do so.
SaulGoodmanAAL@reddit
That's a lot of words just to suck CCP cock lol.
Oh_its_that_asshole@reddit
Because they need the minerals to fuel their domestic industries back home. The income comes from those industries, not the raw resource extraction.
porn_flakes@reddit
But I was told that places like Africa were bled completely dry by the ebil whyt colonizers, which is why they never invented a seaworthy boat or a wheel and therefore we need to let a bajillion Bomalians into Western Europe and North America.
easterner1848@reddit
They're not anymore. They've backed out a massive amount of their agreements with various countries.
They still have some ongoing operations but its massively reduced. China has taken a strategic position to reign in on their investments there. This was news about 2-3 years ago.

Pletterpet@reddit
Africa is still full of natural resources, but its a doomed continent. There is this clip of a Chinese construction guy in Africa being absolutely flabbergasted how the Africans just threw away their wealth while the Chinese had to work hard for their shit.
You know, in a another 100 years they will still be dirt poor and blaming colonialism.
EliyeBro@reddit
Europe was already wealthy before their colonization of Africa. After colonialism, wealth and living standards shot up in Europe while the same declined in Africa. I’m not justifying colonialism, all I’m saying is reality often isn’t so black and white (pun intended lol).
Hornpub@reddit
You can also compare colonized countries to their neighbours that weren't.
Etiopia was never colonized, because they fought off the europeans, and now Etiopia is among the poorest countries in Africa.
Same with the Caribbean. The islands that were colonized all have a higher standard of living and GDP compared to the neighbours that weren't colonized.
Hagra2Ter@reddit
Or even better, you can compare African countries that were colonized to how they were before colonial rule.
In Subsaharan Africa colonial rule mostly lasted from the 1880s to the 1960s, so it's pretty easy to do that. We have photographs and detailed records on the absolute state of these places before colonial rule began.
Turns out the vast majority of cities (including capital cities) that now exist in Subsaharan Africa were built between 1880 and 1960 by European colonizers. That's just how backward precolonial Africa was in the late 19th century.
CorbusierChild69@reddit
Oh yes of course, Leopold the great builder of cities in the congo
bnipples@reddit
literally was lmao
Hagra2Ter@reddit
Here is what Kinshasa looked like when the Belgians arrived there in the 1880s, (after the region enjoyed millions of years of independence to develop on its own) => https://i.imgur.com/6nFZCgW.jpeg
And here is what it looked like in 1960, after 80 years of Belgian rule => https://i.imgur.com/NFGFuIv.jpeg
As a matter of fact, the area that became Belgian Congo (and that is now the DRC) didn't have a SINGLE city. Every settlement was the same neolithic tier straw hut village of naked primitive people as Kinshasa was on these photos.
CorbusierChild69@reddit
Oh yes of course, it just took the genocide of 15 million Congolese and wiling out 1/3 of the population, great price to pay for a mid city
Hagra2Ter@reddit
I see you're moving the goalpost. Your post was about whether or not the Belgians built cities.
Now if you want to discuss the atrocities during Leopold's rule, there is a lot to talk about. The ethnic make up of the Force Publique that committed those atrocities (spoiler, it wasn't hordes of white belgians going around cutting limbs and cannibalizing people), the ridiculousness of the high end population and death estimates (as if precolonial Congo, a neolithic jungle without a single city, could have housed 20 millions people, aka more than Brazil in that same era...), the role of the Sleeping Sickness epidemics in the death toll...
Zeus1131@reddit
Africa gets 65 billion a year from the west
ShewBeDooWah@reddit
I sincerely hope youre joking.
60* billion a year from the west. While the west roughly receives 70- 100 billion from resource extraction such as: oil, gas, minerals, and metals. Not mentioning the trade imbalances that colonialism has set in place another 50- 70 billion to western pockets, as well as debt repayments to western creditors.. 40- 50 billion. Cant forget about illegal financial flow and tax avoidance... another 50- 100 billion to the west.
TLDR: Africa is still getting fucked lubelessly by the long 200+ year old dick of colonialism. Anyone thinking otherwise is a laughable idiot whose fallen for Western conservative propaganda or is intentionally arguing otherwise in bad faith.

The "economic exploitation" was usually "grow these cash crops and we'll open hospitals and build roads." In a lot of areas, colonization was overwhelmingly good and locals begged them to step in and end cannibalism/ slavery/ protect them from Arabs/ etc
Some countries capitalized on their colonial period and developed further, some collapsed immediately. The variable here is the quality of the colonized people and not how bad colonialism was
me239@reddit
Ok, say you have a flower bed with a certain soil that’s great for growing a new species of plant that has medicinal properties. You never knew about it until I approached you and gave you the offer of $100 month to let me use the flower bed in front of your yard. Then you notice I built 3 more flower beds in the same spot, repaved your driveway, and am paying you $400 a month now for the use. You have no idea what I’m doing and how I’m growing this plant, you just see lots of guys out there taking samples and running tests, but what do you care, you’re getting $400 a month for doing nothing and your driveway is fixed. Now imagine you discover I’m taking this plant to my own facility and reselling it at 1000x the cost and taking the profit. You’d want a larger cut, but you know you don’t have the time and know how to grow and process it yourself. So you now want $10,000 a month per garden bed and threaten to stop allowing me to use. I say ok, I’ll take it elsewhere and go to your neighbor’s house to use his bed that he was happy to sell at $75 a plot cause he saw your new driveway and heard about your passive income. Now you’re left with no money and an unused garden bed.

Some and some honestly although for once the UK actually is partly to blame, they had to self fund a massive damn because it partly couldn't get international support because of Egypt laying claim to the water of the Nile and the UK supported it, now they are playing a tightrope between filling it quickly (to supply water for irrigation aswell as power) or have Egypt blow it up due to stopping the Nile.
Other factors like others have said although the massive population increase if phenomenal (1960-20million to 2025-130 million) when we've been told how much they've been starving for most of that period, so I'm doubting if they could get their agriculture up to peak production they would still not be food secure, (hell the Ukraine war caused food inflation in Egypt due to how much they import) basically by just giving them food and not helping solve some of the underlying issues the potential famine and loss of life is greater than it ever was.

Giraff3sAreFake@reddit
Ethiopia was still behind Europe even extremely early in its history, even during the 1000s it was behind Europe, thats not racist thats just a fact.
Now answer the question, if the only reason Africa is such a shithole is due to "the west" why is Ethiopia and why has it always been, a shithole?
ShewBeDooWah@reddit
I'll answer this, but are you going to actually take what I have to say and reflect on it? Or are you just going to ignore what I have to say.
Seriously asking.
Giraff3sAreFake@reddit
If you have actual good points yeah I will, read my other comment for clarification
ShewBeDooWah@reddit
Ok.
Your blanket statement is racist because, while not saying it but insinuating, that it's all of the peoples of Africa's fault by being incompetent morons. And using Ethiopia as an example for this because while not being colonized, you're ignoring the history and unique complexities..If you didnt mean to sound that way then i would reflect on your wording because it came off that way.
Let me dive a little further.
Ethiopia lacked the raw resources such as coal and iron deposits where as Europe had tons near ports and rivers perfect for earl industrialization. Ethiopia has highland and rugged terrain but with fertile land which is why 70% of the current population are farmers and 35% of that agriculture is their GDP. Because of these lack of raw resources they haven't been able to industrialize their agriculture which is why it's still a rain fed agriculture and has the potential and has in the past caused famine (1980s, 1 million died)
To recap, you're using Ethiopia... a small country whose borders have been defined because of colonialism and is surrounded by colonial powers for your proof of this claim... Do I really need to explain to you why this would cause problems for a nations development?

Read my other comment. I actually do agree with you on about 80% of your points, especially about the lack of raw resources, its a similar reason on why American Indians didnt have an industrial revolution and why their immune systems were so weak when Europeans arrived (though that was also due to the lack of large scale human-animal co-habitation as well)
However, Africa has a massive problem with corruption and a lack of civic sense when it comes to the government. Let me clarify it is NOT because they're African, but it IS due to a culture and mentality that is extremely common IN Africa.
Its similar to how in China, cheating in video games is extremely common as there is a culture and mentality of "do whatever it takes to win and get ahead, no matter what"
Like i said earlier, I do actually think we agree on a lot of points, we just disagree on how strong the effect of colonization was on Ethiopia

DEAR GOD! A poor country sells cheap resources to rich countries? Stop the press! This is the story of the millennium. This has never happened before!
In my Reddit educated opinion they should just sit on their excess resources because it's better to make no money instead of undercutting the competition. Other countries, except for china, should just buy African products above market value. And when nobody buys their resources they can just eat their iron and drink their oil.
EsotericAmbrosia@reddit

Every imbalance in the world is due to evil white people and their damn colonialism.

88sSSSs88@reddit
Me when nuance makes me angry
chanbr@reddit
I mean, "nuance" would also mean you acknowledge that colonialism had positive effects as well as negative, and that foreign aid has various second order effects that aren't as beneficial to the natives, doesn't it?
88sSSSs88@reddit
Yes because in a subreddit that loves making sweeping historical reductions it would be more important to argue the Nazis’ animal-rights policies granted them the benefit of moral complexity than it would be to remember the implications of doing pretty uncouth things to 1, 2 or 15-20 million people.
chanbr@reddit
Then you don't need to use the word "nuance", you just want to beat up on the far right. Which is fair, they're not exactly making friends, but you don't actually want nuance, you don't care about the natives (since we are specifically talking about colonialism here) having their own agency and dealings with outsiders entering their area outside of the typical "oppressed/oppressor" dynamic.
AzKondor@reddit
Nobody said every imbalance, nobody said evil white people. Don't get mad at facts, colonialism happened, people profited of Africa and they are still profiting, of course less now and in more humane way, you can't just brush off hundreds of years of history.
FuckRedditIsLame@reddit
You can't brush off hundreds of years of history, but you can't ignore the thousands of years of history before that, in which human development was lagging, nor can you ignore the generations upon generations since most of Africa exited any sort of colonial relationship, in which there's been a complete failure to master their circumstances and capitalize on the absolutely vast wealth of the continent.
AzKondor@reddit
That's true as well, but I would say that the Golden Horde did the very same thing, attacked undeveloped Europe, and I would still say that they were barbaric murderers, not "yeah shit happens, Europe should have developed faster".
FuckRedditIsLame@reddit
It was barbaric, I guess, but the weak are always prayed upon by the weak. This is unkind but it's a universal truth.
AzKondor@reddit
That's true, although Europe had few centuries to bounce back, and Africa few decades. My point isn't to cuddle Africa and said it's not their fault at all, just... There were still colonies there when fucking Star Wars was in cinemas, and people here are all like "yup, they had time pick up their shit, why aren't rich now" lmao
But I get your point, maybe in 500 years they will still be poor, who knows.
FuckRedditIsLame@reddit
Some of them were, yes. But that was like 45 years ago. Since then many of them have gained full independence, had obscene amounts of money thrown at them, wasted that money, changed their name 3 times, gone to war with at least 1 neighbor, been run by a military strongman for at least a while, completely failed to figure out how modern agriculture works despite having some incredibly fertile lands that could be the world's breadbasket, and now export barely educated young men to Europe as food couriers and taxi drivers.
Giraff3sAreFake@reddit
Ok so why is Ethiopia still a shithole, it was never colonized and it looks just like the rest of Africa
AzKondor@reddit
I think that having the rest of the continent being colonized didn't help them, like even poor European countries are not that bad because of rich countries around them.
But if not that, then some countries are poor due to many factors, maybe they are that not because of white men but because of corrupt leadership, maybe it is "their fault", why not. I didn't said that all African countries would be richest in the world if not for white men lol
TwoButtons30@reddit
how come my bones dont have cancer if its in my blood

Ah so countries that weren’t colonized by the West are doing badly because other countries were colonized by the West, but also the countries that were colonized by the West. Do you not believe colonialism is bad...?
It only happened because these power hunger capitalistic elites saw foreign nations that were technologically less developed with large amounts of resources. If the races were reversed it wouldn't have mattered... it's still a reprhensible and gigantically unethical thing to do. The western world in which we live in is a system for white people because the elite who created these systems had a 99% populace of white people and they happened to follow the doctrine of capitalism. They wanted wealth, power, and status and they got that through colonialism.
Before colonialism no one gave a shit what kind of skin colour you had. Now, because of colonialism, it's fucked with our collective psyches so hard because of propaganda and anecdotal instances.

I think the book Guns, Germs, and Steel makes a pretty good argument why. tldr Africa is poor because of geography, climate, fewer plants and animals to domesticate, more disease due to climate, and farming techniques and tools had a harder time spreading from where civilization started ("the fertile crescent") into Africa (due to reasons like the Sahara desert)
European civilization were the first to cross a threshold that allowed them to colonize many parts of the world and they still enjoy an advantage to this day, this is what I personally believe

Africa is getting fucked because its constituent states can't get along with each other for more than a few years at a time, are completely and hopelessly addicted to foreign aid despite vast natural resources, are appallingly systemically corrupt, and who despite that vast natural wealth and having been for the most part no longer colonies for generations, have failed to capitalize in a meaningful way - and when all of that comes together, malignant corporate interests will take advantage of the situation.
TLDR: Africa can't blame its problems on others forever - its constituent, somewhat democratically elected governments (when not under military dictatorship) are garbage and every opportunity for wealth and prosperity is squandered over and over and over and over, because aid is easier.

Its literally the same as giving a homeless man money. No concerns for anything beyond immediate gratification so nothing changes.
Kitano1314@reddit
Not true, I think it was in Canada where they did some trials of giving homeless people 3 or 4 thousand dollars I think and the vast majority used it to secure accommodation and employment.
Kinglygolfin@reddit
I think the exact opposite actually happened in that study
Zer0_SUM0@reddit
Nah he's telling the truth, he's just conveniently leaving out the part where the study purposely exluded drunks, druggies, and insane people from those recieving money. After all they make such a small percent of the homeless population there'd be no point including them.
Gamestoreguy@reddit
So you hate drunks, druggies and insane people so bad that the people who became homeless due to unfortunate circumstances shouldn’t be helped because?

Are you an imbecile perhaps?
gprime312@reddit

Zpalq@reddit
That's the comment I was making fun of.
How the fuck did you interpolate "homeless man has no concerns beyond immediate gratification" to "homeless people often deal with mental health and drug problems, and third party intervention is often necessary to fix their problems"
actually-drake@reddit
Go talk to any homeless person or people working in shelters. They either don’t seek change, have drug addiction, or have mental illness. Very few of them are vets and are down on luck, and those people usually bounce back. “But my political boleeeefs Yada yada”
chiefoogabooga@reddit
They didn't need employment. Their accommodations were a casket. The vast majority of homeless would overdose in 48 hours with 3 or 4 thousand dollars.
Unless, of course, you have a source for this feel-good bullshit?
dudeofea@reddit
Homeless people also get robbed a lot by other homeless people.
If you got $3000 bucks you would probably spend it on rent. if you got 50$/day you would spend it right away on food, sex, or drugs. Even if it takes 60 days to get $3000, you'd get robbed by the end of the week.
Jenos@reddit
The source is here. The biggest takeaway was that the group given money didn't spend more money on "temptation goods" (drugs, alcohol, cigs) compared to the control group which got nothing.
That said, there is probably one major fact to remember in this data, which is that I believe incidence of mental illness in homeless populations is higher in US homeless populations than in canadian
PrivilegeCheckmate@reddit
Yeah, I know, I lived through Reagan.
Estropolim@reddit
You're glossing over the most important part. It did not indicate that homeless people in general won't spend all their money on drugs. The real takeaway was that the minority of homeless people who are not addicts or mentally ill don't spend all their money on drugs. It isn't really a surprising result.
johnny_effing_utah@reddit
No that’s just not true. You cannot conclude from the study that it “indicates giving money to the homeless isn’t going to be pissed away on drugs.”
In fact, it indicates that you CAN help about 1 in 3 homeless people if they don’t have deeper underlying issues.
But 2/3rds of the homeless DO have those issues. Therefore we can’t simply “give money to the homeless.” We have to carefully screen and provide whatever assistance is needed, and MOST of the time the problem ISN’T lack of money.
itimin@reddit
https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2222103120
chiefoogabooga@reddit
So they gave money to people who had pre-registered for the study, not just handing cash to people on a street corner. Obviously, those results will be far different than giving money to random homeless people, as the subjects in the study possessed enough foresight to sign up in the first place. The typical homeless addict would have been too busy trying to scrape up $20 for their next fix to fill out paperwork.
I have no issue trying to get people off the street. It's good for society as a whole. I'm just not a fan of disingenuous studies that claim to be random, but are choosing subjects who are likely to give the best possible outcome.

1) can you please provide a source. I am not being sarcastic or facetious, I would genuinely be interested in seeing it.
2) I’m not sure how the Canadian homeless problem is, but in the US it’s going to vary WIDELY person to person. If the study includes people down on the luck, or suffering from medical disabilities, I could see similar results here. But a majority of homelessness is due to drug addiction, mental illness, or more often a combination of both.

Nice attempt but the individuals screened are not the normal type of chronically homeless. Mental health and drug use are huge contributing factors. If the study pinpoints how the mentally unwell or drug addicts performed compared to other similar peoples, that would be a good control.

PetDivorceLaw@reddit
Nice, attempt Redditor with 10 years and 80,000 points who actively participates on rTinder.
Let me help you out! It turns out that, you can't lump the college student sleeping in his car with the drug addict who sells his sphincter for two cents every night. Categories actually matter as "homeless" has a set of definitions and the generic one refers to people who do not have shelter suitable for human habitability. This general definition applies to many things, such as an individual who is sleeping in their car, at the park, or on the street. These struggles are usually temporary and last up to 6 months. Chronically homeless are typically the feral street matter that leave droppings and shoot up dope with their pupperino in the box.
These categories matter because giving $7000 to a chronically homeless street junkie will only create a richer drug dealer, and $7000 for a college student will give a few months of comfort. Does this help or are you going to continue embodying the Dunning-Kruger effect?

token_internet_girl@reddit
I have a surprise for you about who is "usually" homeless.
It's important to note a lot of good, hard-working men end up homeless and on drugs after job accidents. When they're in constant pain for years and nothing takes the edge off anymore, they'll do anything to stop it. A lot of those schizos didn't start that way.
PetDivorceLaw@reddit
Hi! Very cute comment and super nice of you to elucidate, BUT you need to work on your reading comprehension.
I have worked with homeless people and done research for the local government, so there is no need for you to provide this silly little note. I mean this in the most abrasive manner possible, that you are beneath me on this topic. I am very well aware of how "homeless" is defined and how most persons who experience homelessness are not bums or schizos. There is a very special keyword in my comment... it is "CHRONICALLY HOMELESS." Feel free to look it up instead of typing to me :)
token_internet_girl@reddit
Wow aren't you so cute, being so nasty to someone who lived on the streets for nearly a year? I can see why we still have a homeless problem when people like you think they're above people like me and work in the system. Hopefully you aren't within a mile of homeless people anymore, and I say that with my full fucking chest :)
VirtueSignalLost@reddit

Thank you for providing the link! That was a genuinely interesting read. It’s sad that only 31% of the homeless population they screened met the above criteria and speaks to an entirely different problem. But studies like these should be done more widely by first world countries.
SapirWhorfHypothesis@reddit
Yeah, this is an interesting point. Obviously not everyone is going to be helped, but also that there were a big chunk of people who can be.
GillaMobster@reddit
NP, we have a duty to spread facts, and shame misinformation.
bunker_man@reddit
Yeah. Studies show that giving money is more effective than food. If you give food it puts local farmers out of business. If you give money it bolsters local economy as they buy from local farmers.
VirtueSignalLost@reddit
If you're not mentally ill and/or not hooked on hard drugs. Unfortunately most homeless people are, that's why they're homeless.
alternat@reddit
If that's the study I'm thinking of, they excluded anyone with drug problems, alcohol problems, and mental health problems. They also excluded anyone who hadn't been homeless for a short period of time. So they only included the small percentage of the homeless population that were going to get back on their feet anyway. Shockingly, those people got back on their feet.
FearLeadsToAnger@reddit
This still supports the point they were making though tbf.
Magistricide@reddit
Canadian homeless are different than people who live in third world countries. They would have gotten elementary education and some form of high school education, as well as grew up with Canadian culture.
Garglepeen@reddit
Hell yeah UBI is the tits.
Kief_Bowl@reddit
Kinda a dumb study since they only picked those without major drug problems. A majority of homeless have drug problems
outland_king@reddit
The criteria for that study make the results dubious at best.
Their selection criteria were among others homelessness for less than 2 years, as well as a non-substantial substance abuse or mental disorder. So basically they only selected people who were recently homeless and relatively sane/ without addiction.
This does mot account for habitual homeless (either reoccurring or long term) as well as addicts and mentally unstable. Which is a sizable population of homeless.
Their conclusion is faulty, assuming a purely economic reason for homelessness which throwing money at would magically solve
RedditIsAboutToDie@reddit

You do realize that the Mississippi (and basically all rivers that are used for transportation across the globe) are only navigable because of massive human efforts to make them navigable? There are 29 locks and dams that make it navigable, and the river has to be constantly dredged and maintained so that it can be used for transport.
The idea that Europeans were handed a perfectly good system of rivers for navigation is totally false. They made that system.

Mr_Ovis@reddit
A video that really rammed the concept home for me was one about bridges that were built during the colonial period. There were several bridges built over 100 years ago that are now barely splinters, literally barely traversable and very unsafe. The Africans have made no efforts to repair them, they have only adapted to simply crossing them in more dangerous fashion.
Falcon84@reddit
Damn that’s insane. Guess it’s gotta be a combination of a lot of factors. Lack of education to know how to fix things, corrupt governments taking any funding for themselves, and a culture of not caring about hygiene or safety.
Le_Ebin_Rodditor@reddit
I’m so sick of hearing that magical thinking, “oh but the lack of education” when talking about these people at home or abroad. Billions spent every year for decades upon decades and it’s made zero difference. They’re either non-educable or don’t care, choose whatever is easier to cope with.

Purplefilth22@reddit
Education legitimately means fuck all for two reasons:
The ones that do apply themselves to learn... Almost always leave Africa and then do ANYTHING to get their family out. Brain drain is a real thing. It goes Africa -> South Africa -> ANYWHERE that isn't Africa. It isn't even a racial thing they just see how dire the situation is and realize its easier and more lucrative to bail.
The same reasons education doesn't work in poverty/low income areas in the west. See Lebron James public school and the multitude of other celebrity funded low in come schools. The Lebron James documentary on it is actually pretty interesting.
VirtueSignalLost@reddit
The culture is the main problem because without it you can't have education and non corrupt governments.
VirtueSignalLost@reddit
They have no concept of maintenance because everything is temporary to them. There is no long term thinking. Personally I think this is due to the weather since people in the north have developed concepts of getting them through the winter.

The west doesn’t want an Africa where people realize their self worth, how much wealth they have in their continent, and how they should be the ones setting terms.

Fr. I remember seeing in a rekt thread a video of a Chinese guy (whose company would've provided equipment and training) coming back to Africa to inspect a mine and its equipment.
It was meant to be a long sustaining method of providing Africans in this location job security and a decent source of income.
When the Chinese guy got there all the machines were broken and not working due to no maintenance and incorrect use. The whole mine was basically shut and inoperable. After touring the facilities and seeing machines just left broken and abandoned–seemingly midway through their task–he just sat there smoking a cigarette, shaking his head like "Wtf... how did you let it get to this point. There's nothing I can do.".
It was outside the usual rekt thread gore and maiming, but it was definitely a brutal hit to Africa's reputation and honestly, well-being. They were given the means yet couldn't help themselves.
Gravesh@reddit
I watched a documentary last weekend, it might be the same one you're referring to, called Empire of Dust. IIRC, it was in the Congo. The Chinese administration (who are quietly colonizing Africa, don't know why we aren't alarmed by this considering Africa's wealth of minerals like cobalt) couldn't get shit done due to corruption. The entire documentary the manager is trying to get a fucking truckload of gravel and the locals couldn't handle it.
I assume it may be the same documentary because in it, the Chinese guy insults the country, stating that the Belgians built all this infrastructure and the Congolese did nothing to keep it maintained after independence.

Well the way they are sold - yes they are mad. I wouldn't be happy if only an elite ruling class (or just warlords) propped up by former imperial powers took the lions share of the wealth. All while the former imperial masters getting an amazing deal.
People aren't bitching about this because its PC bullshit. Oppression wasn't a magical spell cast by European wizards. It is a complicated system of leveraging diplomatic and economic power to subject a people, nations or groups of peoples.

have you seen the working conditions??? how much do you think they get paid??? these situations where africans are forced to labor and sell these precious resources for a pittance is manufactured by the west, if they got a fair price for what they were selling africa would be on par with any western country. Leaders are installed in these countries to keep conditions poor so that the rich countries can get cheap labor, resources, and commodities. Africa has a population of 1.55 billion people. Simple math means that amounts to $41 per person in Africa per year.
The inference you're making by your comment is that Africa gets a lot of money from the west. But assuming the funds are being distributed to each country evenly, per their population size, that would be about 80¢ per week, which is below the absolute poverty line of $1.90/day according to the World Bank.

In the case of Portugal, we were once of the wealthiest nation when we were extracting most of the gold of Brasil.
The problem was that we didn't develop our economy, and our trade deficit with the UK was huge.
We literally funded the first industrial revolution, and it is believed that around 65% of all the gold we extracted to Brasil went to the UK.
Economic historians believe that the general population was not better off during this period but only royal house and a few merchants and investors.
What's worst is that we lost a lot of labour that should have staid in agriculture. It created a void and a bigger dependency of foreign markets to import agriculture products.
Brasil also didn't benefit much from this exploitation and saw an increase in slaves coming from Africa.
So that Gold was one of the first cases of "the resource curse". A wasted opportunity that could have been a win win to everyone involved but only improved a few.
BrazilianTerror@reddit
Bro, it’s right there in the name: exploitation. Brazil was the one being exploited of course it didn’t benefit
Daddy_Parietal@reddit
You can exploit someone and still have them benefit. Most of the railways in africa and india. That's just rail, there were many other developments that western powers proceeded with during their exploitation.
Your shithole decided to stay a shithole.
BrazilianTerror@reddit
You gotta be kidding. The railways in Africa and India were build to better extract the resources bro. Africa and India would be a lot better without the railways, since it would make it harder for the imperial colonies to rob the resources and also transfer troops inside
alelp@reddit
Brazil's story is sad because our Emperor was following in the USA's steps when the monarchy was abolished.
So instead of freeing the slaves and industrializing with the large amount of Japanese immigrants coming over, we got to keep things as they were. As a result, Brazil has been run by the same mafia since its inception.
konstantin1453@reddit
If Brazil had stayed an empire it would be probably the richest south american nation now....

VirtueSignalLost@reddit
The same exact problem would persist in Africa even if you gave them all the wealth in the world. You have to understand that most of Africa is essentially equivalent to pre-undustrial Europe. This is essentially due to not enough cultural development.
Take_Some_Soma@reddit
What’s the modern application of this phenomenon?
Tech industry?
lordofmmo@reddit
Absolutely in the Congo. Cobalt mines to fuel battery tech. of course it's a hotspot for child labor.
Sebas94@reddit
I remember in the early 2000s economic professors saying that the Gulf States would fall into this trap but it appears that they are trying to diversify their economy.
A modern application that comes to mind is Portugal again and it's dependency of the tourism sector. Covid should have been a wake up call that we needed to diversify but this sectors just keeps growing it's slice of the pie.

No. North America was very sparsely populated, enabling the transposition of a homogenous culture, something which wasn't exactly possible in central and South America. There's also a myriad other factors, but it isn't as simple as you think.

The South American gold and silver mines were nowhere near as important as pop historians claim. The east is conveniently left outside because there are cases of even after being colonized (Singapore by the British) they are richer than the west now. China was colonized by a retarded faction of themselves, Corea by the Japanese, in general it shows that any economic shock does not change your long run trajectories, Africa was a shitole before and after colonialism, and the noncolonized countries in Africa (Ethiopia) do not perform as well as the colonized countries with better human capital.

Time to wake up from middle ages. Do people even know what economy lacks in modern age? It's consumers. Absolutely no one is interested in having Africa poor. Like litturaly no one in today day and age is winning from that. If Africa and Latin America became rich and started actually consuming stuff developed countries produce on mass. Not only their standard of living will go though the roof. Economy of the entire world will reach levels never seen before.
Like look around. Us is big economy because it is consumer economy, that's why they can throw their weight and slap tariffs left and right completely unopposed. China became significantly more rich than it used to be(still plenty of room to grow) and it's main market of European car manufacturers and not only them. Chinese market is the money making market for all, and it will keep growing.
Can you imagine if people in Nigeria started consuming at least half as much as Chinese today? Joblessness in Europe largely solved, that's what it means.

Plenty of westerners vacation at these places due to how nice they are, many of these nations are economic powerhouses with influence in the world.
To compound on this, nations in Africa are functional. The continent of Africa isn’t one burning cesspit. It’s not perfect but people still have normal lives in Africa

What is happening to 4chan, are we turning woke?
Many African nations were left with infrastructure and knowledge how to maintain said infrastructure after colonization, yet the minute White people left, it all turned to shit. Take Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) for example: It had a functioning economy when 300.000 White people were in control. After the war was lost, everything went to shit.
Rhodesia late 1970s: approx. $7,000–8,000 GDP per capita (PPP, 2020 dollars)
Zimbabwe 2023: ~ $1,500 GDP per capita (constant 2015 USD, World Bank)
If you think that Africa without colonialism would look any different than it does today, you are delusional. Africans are as a civilization just not yet advanced enough to build modern economies on their own.
