At 49, I’m headed back to school for my master’s degree this week….

While not quite Rodney Dangerfield, I found a program, bought a Trapper Keeper, and I’m heading back school.
I graduated college in 1998 at the age of twenty-two. Not only had I earned a degree, but I also left school with my (one day to be) adopted son and first born. By 30, I was married, already several years into a mortgage, and my final of 4 kids was born. He’s starting his freshmen year, his sister is a junior, and the oldest 2 are grown.
Like Luke Skywalker heading back to Dagobha because he has “a promise to keep to an old friend”…….I’m keeping the promise to myself that one day I would go back to school.
I’ve had a nice go at marriage, crazy divorce, over 25 year career in something I’m passionate about, been published a few times, found some regional success as a stand-up comedian, helped pass some legislation, swam with sharks, seen a couple of my favorite bands from the front role, watched my kids grow, and my daughter is about to release her first album….. her success is the continuation of a dream similar one I had early life in at her age. I’m a bit jealous, but much more so proud, that that dream lives on in her.
So, still in a pair of Doc Martens, with most of my hair but now with streaks of wisdom throughout, I head to the classroom for a Master’s in Innovation knowing there is more than one answer to these questions pointing me in a crooked line and I’m closer to fine.

Congrats!!! I’m 44 and am in my 2nd year of law school. I love it and would not be doing as well and I am in my twenties. Knowing how real life works is such an asset. Good luck!
Olderbutnotdead619@reddit
Really? How's the memory working? I've always wanted to go to law school, even dreamed of it. Which field will you be going into? Do you work about getting a job?
Silver_Read_8669@reddit
Also. I’m Not the oldest! It’s never too late.
Silver_Read_8669@reddit
Hi! I think my memory is fine but my husband would say otherwise. Lol. My husband keeps all things family and life related together. That’s my biggest advice- your significant other has to be just as bought in as you are.
Jobs are all about networking. I’ve been a paralegal for 20 years and have a few options. Also, the school does a really good job with networking. I help with hiring law clerks at my job and work experience carries a lot of weight- doesn’t even have to be legal. I guess i should say life experience, really.
I’m in the South so I’m looking into maritime. It’s what I currently work in so it seems like the natural next step. I’m also a veteran so I’d like to do some pro bono work.
Overall, I’m loving it. It’s hard but there is just something to being old and under estimated and being in the top 10% that is glorrrrioussssss 🤣😂😂
iwritesinsnotcomedy@reddit (OP)
Thanks and congrats!
That_Pen_1912@reddit
Omg I wish you could go in there tugging your collar and cracking Rodney dangerfields. You would be so problematic.
jesus_chen@reddit
Great job! I was on the same timeline. What Innovation program if you don’t mind?
iwritesinsnotcomedy@reddit (OP)
Entrepreneurship, Innovation, and Leadership at the university of Maryland.
jesus_chen@reddit
Nice. Very good program. Good luck and kick ass!
RedJeepPurpleKayak@reddit
I completed my master’s at 52. Got my bachelor’s in ‘93, had to basically re-do a bachelor’s in a different field to get into this master’s program. But it’s a huge sense of personal accomplishment because I always wanted to do it. No student loans, no regrets.
IronAnchor1@reddit
Recently turned 48. Awesome to hear this. Best of luck to you! Go get em', champ!
grinder_girl@reddit
You are well accomplished!! It is more impressive, though that you are still eager to learn ☺️ 34-year-old female just out of a very physically mentally emotionally abusive relationship with the father of my two children and best friends in 16. There were definitely signs that he was not on my team for a long time but one of the age of 33. I decided I need to go back to school. My parents might’ve been right when they said I’m way smarter than I give myself credit for what the hell am I doing with myself? 👀 seriously though he had me convinced he wanted to help me get back to school, but always putting doubt in my mind.
Of course, then I go and tell my little circle of people that I wanna get my pH D and they look at me half crazy too!
This gives me so much inspiration though !!! Thank you for posting and good luck in all your endeavors 🫶🏻
elphaba00@reddit
I got my master’s degree a month before I turned 46. I took the part-time route so it took me 3 years. I was easily the oldest person in all my classes. I was also one of the few part timers.
Right now, it’s just a feeling of accomplishment that I have it. Nothing much has changed. I keep hoping the economy will pick up and the job offers will open up. But I do have it. And nothing will change that.
Beneficial-Cow-2544@reddit
Yay!!!!
47 here and started a 2nd master's last week. Kudos for us.
Now back to my research paper draft before I have to put my little one to bed!
EmergencyWide5583@reddit
I have an Associate’s degree but always regretted not getting my Bachelor’s so I have been taking classes for the last 2 years and have about 2 more to go (can only do part time); I am hoping to get my degree by the time I turn 60 😁. Probably a waste of money in the whole scheme of life, but it’s worth it to me.
DrPuftington@reddit
Good luck, started both my Masters at 44. Got my PhD at 54
Olderbutnotdead619@reddit
Can I ask if that makes a difference in your life? Besides having the pride of completion?
DrPuftington@reddit
Not much at the moment to be honest, I am just completing a Post Graduate Diploma to enable me to get chartered status, which I will finish in December. I suppose the greatest difference is that I have another avenue to look at for employment and income should I decide to go down that route. I am a person that believes no one owes me a living (been self employed for 30 years) so I suppose I am just retraining should I want a career change in later life, and I am looking forward to having that option.
Olderbutnotdead619@reddit
Of course. Self gratification that is not instant. Any all education will help in anything you do. May I ask what you do for a living?
iwritesinsnotcomedy@reddit (OP)
Good for you! Congratulations!
LooLu999@reddit
I’m back I’m school after losing my nursing career to addiction. And then Covid happened and I decided to completely switch gears. Left my long term relationship and am a single mom for the first time. I’m about to get my AA after this semester and then an internship. It’s been an experience but I’m grateful. I’m also taking it more seriously this time around. And thank goodness my kids can help me with the technology once in awhile 🙃
iwritesinsnotcomedy@reddit (OP)
Good for you! Congrats on finishing and good luck in your internship!
LooLu999@reddit
Thank you!
BraveG365@reddit
What field are you going into?
thanks
LooLu999@reddit
Chemical dependency and substance abuse counseling. And who knows, I might petition the nursing board eventually to try and have my license reinstated but I’m just taking it one step at a time for now.
YachtRock_SoSmooth@reddit
53 here, just got my bachelors in 2022 and planning to get the masters next year. Kids are all grown time to push myself forward as I get closer to retirement.
Happy_Blackbird@reddit
Me, too! Got my BA in 2024. Just started the second year of my MA. All in person. We are legion! :)

55 yo here, in my second semester pursuing a masters in counseling. Had two previous careers, one daughter, and on my second marriage. it’s never too late.
Cool_Intention_7807@reddit
I’m 58 and seriously thinking about finishing my masters in counseling, wish I had started 3 years ago when I was laid off.
SkepticalPenguin2319@reddit
You have my encouragement!
iwritesinsnotcomedy@reddit (OP)
Yo go!!!’
FAx32@reddit
Congrats and enjoy it. 6 years older you and had a random memory of retirees auditing courses when I was an undergraduate. That suddenly seems appealing-to learn something for the love of knowledge (something I couldn’t really savor as an undergraduate or grad student in the 80s-early 00s as it was all in pursuit of an end goal and triangulation for the career path).
NachoKingRandy@reddit
In my Master's program now. Get it done.
RedditSkippy@reddit
I went back three years ago at 47. I was the same age as my advisor (who clearly wasn’t thrilled to have an older student in her cohort.)
You’ll be great. Your life and work experience will help you treat this degree program as a full-time job.
Feel free to AMA, although I’m sure that your program will be much different than mine was.
FoldedaMillionTimes@reddit
I'm 54 and just wrapped up my first week back in college. It's online, which is good, but if I were attending in person I think I'd get a Trapper Keeper and punk-rock the he'll out of it, exclusively with 80s punk stuff, as authentic as possible. Then I'd play it straight if anyone noticed and say it was the same one I had my senior year of HS and I just pulled it out of a drawer at home. Just to fuck with them.
There's one thing I know for sure about being surrounded by much younger people, and it's that they are the perfect "straight men" for comedy. I mean, if you don't mind being your own audience.
BraveG365@reddit
What type of degree field are you getting?
iwritesinsnotcomedy@reddit (OP)
Entrepreneurship, Innovation, and Leadership
iwritesinsnotcomedy@reddit (OP)
You sound fun! Good luck with your studies!
GuaranteeWeekly4048@reddit
Good luck! I just finished my Masters at 54.
3deryn@reddit
Congrats on going back to school! I graduated college in 1997 and worked a few years before becoming a stay at home dad to three great kids for the last 22 years. My third is a senior in high school this year, and they don't really need me anymore, so I'm headed back to become a PTA (physical therapist assistant) at age 50. Just finished my first week. Terrified, but also excited. Good luck to all of us!
iwritesinsnotcomedy@reddit (OP)
Good for you! That’s great that you got to be the parent that stayed home. I loved when my job went remote right when my daughter was a freshman and my son in middle school. I loved being home with them during Covid. So much so, we ended up homeschooling my daughter so she could hone her interests on music.
3deryn@reddit
Awesome, glad you were happy. I couldn't help but read your user name as "I writes in snot comedy" 🤣
Fitz_2112b@reddit
51 here and finally doing the Bachelors I started in 1992
Sintered_Monkey@reddit
I started my master's at the age of 40, which was 18 years ago. It felt great to finish it at the age of 43.
iwritesinsnotcomedy@reddit (OP)
Congrats! I’m thinking this will be a 3 year venture as well. I’ll get a certificate after 12 credits, which is all I’m planning for this year. And will probably spread the remaining 18 credits over 2 years.
Sintered_Monkey@reddit
I became an employee at the university, which got me almost-free tuition, but it also made the degree part time and added another year.
ER_Support_Plant17@reddit
Congratulations!!
dr_echo@reddit
You all are inspiring me to seriously pursue a Masters at 48. I've been stunned by how indecisive I've been on it, very different from how I approached education the first time around
BDamage707@reddit
I started back in the fall of 2023 for my undergraduate at the age 50.
I also bought a trapper keeper 🤣
a_passionate_man@reddit
You rock…and to wish you the best if luck and joy, here’s one of my favourite Pink Floyd songs and lyrics from Fearless:
And I'll climb the hill in my own way Just wait a while for the right day And as I rise above the tree line and the clouds I look down, hear the sound of the things you said today…
TimHuntsman@reddit
Good! I went back 9 yrs ago to finish my BS The “kids” are disjointed freaks. But you will probably find some older return students that you can connect with. And? Do it. And ignore the weirdos.
Happy_Blackbird@reddit
As someone whose 20 year marriage imploded at 50, who immediately went back to college as a first semester junior to finish my BA, then two years later went right into grad school to get a master’s in counseling psychology, welcome to this new chapter of your life! It’s amazing!!! Take these broken wings, we are the world, and nothing’s gonna stop us now. We’re learning to fly!
iwritesinsnotcomedy@reddit (OP)
Thank you for sharing your successes and congratulations! To New Chapters!!!
Happy_Blackbird@reddit
To new chapters, indeed, and may we never grow tired of reaching towards something difficult and rewarding!
Tallguywithcamera@reddit
50 here, went back and got my Masters during Covid. I am now doing something I actually enjoy for the first time in my life. Good for you!
BraveG365@reddit
What field are you in?
Tallguywithcamera@reddit
Marriage and family therapy.
iwritesinsnotcomedy@reddit (OP)
Smart move! Very happy for you!!’
Status_Change_758@reddit
Congrats!!
I'm debating it but the thought of taking out loans again is deterring me.
BraveG365@reddit
Yeh I thought about going back to get a Masters in another field but seeing how much it cost and then having to worry about loans,,,,I know of two people who went back took at loans and got their degrees but it did not help them to get a better job so now they gripe about having to pay the loans but really no advancement in career
Shot_Ad4562@reddit
Hey buddy, I'm 49 and I've been back in school for a year and a half getting my masters in clinical mental health counseling. You can do it. My career as a copywriter is definately going to be replaced by AI. Randomly enough, I had all but written off getting another job as a copywriter, and an old employer called me up out of the blue an offered me a job and it has been great. But, my wife is a therapist, and they aren't going anywhere despite what some people say. Not everyone is going to want to talk to some AI about their issues, especially if it's owned by some company. So, that's what i'll be doing for the next 20 years or so. Good luck, and good on you for taking the leap.
BraveG365@reddit
Do you have to eventually get a Phd in that field?
iwritesinsnotcomedy@reddit (OP)
My son is studying psychology with the intent to go into clinical mental health counseling too. I agree, people need people.
Delicious-Basil4986@reddit
Congratulations on going back. I finished mine at 58, 5 years in the making. Online power engineering. It will be a hard road but worth it.

Love this for you! I got my teaching license at 40 (never thought I’d be a teacher) and my Masters in educational Administration at 49. Best thing I ever did! Good thing we can figure out what we want to be when we grow up whenever it’s right.
iwritesinsnotcomedy@reddit (OP)
Sure is!!! Congrats!
BastardofMadison@reddit
Good for you. I finished a masters in my late 30s and that felt weird at times. Was older than a lot of the professors and probably ten years older than the department head. AI wasn’t a thing then though.
iwritesinsnotcomedy@reddit (OP)
No em dashes!!!!
BastardofMadison@reddit
Had to search the internet for “em dash”… learned something without going to school.
iwritesinsnotcomedy@reddit (OP)
Happy to pass on a little knowledge!!
ScreamIntoTheDark@reddit
For better or worse, the amount of AI now in education is going to blow your mind. Things are very very different than they were years ago. You won't be alone as an older student. And education now is very much a business.
iwritesinsnotcomedy@reddit (OP)
I’m actually hoping to learn about how to find a harmonious intersection between AI and human creativity. It’s an interesting time, but similar to society during my undergrad year…..Freshman year in 94, we stood in line for registration and teachers gave us a paper syllabus. Junior year in 96, we registered on line and teachers emailed us our syllabi and homework to force us to use the internet. Things change!!!’
HelloMyNameIsLeah@reddit
I'm 50 and had my own business that imploded thanks to the pandemic. I too went back to college. Graduated with my Associates in Comp Sci (2022) and then my Bachelor’s in Information Systems (2024). I graduated in the top 25 of my class of around 750. I worked my ass off but got along splendidly with the younger students. It helps that I'm also a full-time single parent (my daughter just started college last week). I did see quite a few non-traditional students.
iwritesinsnotcomedy@reddit (OP)
Congrats on your accomplishments!

Great prank would be to walk in dressed like aged Jeff Spicoli (Fast Times At Ridgmont High), and completely pretend it is still 1983, similar to Rip Van Winkle. Except no one else would get the joke.

So, I have a Blockbuster hoodie and am kind of stuck in the 90s in general. Your comment tracks.

I got my master’s degree when I was 33. I worked full time, had a 6 year old and an 8 year old, took night classes (lol), my husband was great making sure the kids were out of the house with him on weekends so I could study. I spent my nights out of class with my kids, usually at a school or sports activities.
Paid off in many ways. I was promoted a few years later, gave my kids a great example of so many things, and when I divorced I was able to manage financially without difficulty. I own my home, a few credit cards and I’m retired.
You will never regret it and you’ll be more proud of the accomplishment than you would’ve been 25 years ago

Interesting you brought up The Real World! My undergrad course of study was focused on if it was possible to capture true real life on film if the subjects knew they were being recorded, because they were projecting a version of themselves they wanted the world to see, in addition to producers, editors, etc. splicing things together to construct a reality they wanted to sell. And look where we are now!!!

I went back when I was 48 to pick up a couple of diplomas..My only complaint about it (other than trying to do labs during Covid) was that all the math classes assumed you learned things last year. They need a "math for old farts" which assume you spent 30 years forgetting everything you learned ;)
iwritesinsnotcomedy@reddit (OP)
Even my under grad math class was “writing intensive”…. I wrote papers on mathematicians and did a project on numerology. My math ceiling was when the alphabet got involved with numbers.
