Women in late 20’s to 30’s where are you buying your autumn wardrobe?
Posted by FinanceGoesBad@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 166 comments
I’m female in my late 20’s and looking to refresh my wardrobe. I haven’t bought much for a few years. I would just get the occasional outfit from new look, SHEIN ect. I am out the loop.
I am looking to a more polished capsule wardrobe of good quality, timeless items.
Where have you been finding your favourite jackets, coats, jeans, nice tops, knitwear, workwear ect?
LittleMissAbigail@reddit
I don’t think I do a particularly good job of dressing my age sometimes (I tend to veer older, but I’m trying to change that!) That being said, I buy a fair amount on Vinted also, but the brands I tend to search for are:

Good list am commenting so I can come back and check out some of the ones I know less well.

It can be helpful to share a particular comments link into your notes pad, or copy comment text and save it to a doc/notes too.
It's particularly great for comments with links

Charity shops.
Junior_Caregiver_246@reddit
It used to be river island for jeans/ trousers and tk maxx and Sainsbury’s until I’ve moved last year and changed jobs. Now I shop for more casual, less office wear and shoes. Next, tesco and Vinted for branded things that would otherwise cost an arm and leg.
JustCurious12347@reddit
Check out clothes swaps and charity shops as well. I've found some lovely pieces. :)

Uniqlo, Apricot, and Next
CapitalCharming394@reddit
Apricot are great for dresses
Educational-Law-8169@reddit
Zara: very nice work wear and more casuals, Vero moda, Dunnes have nice workwear too, can't rule out Marks for all rounders
LauraHday@reddit
Uniqlo and M&S over everything else
pansblue@reddit
My go to at the moment is M&S, Fat Face, Seasalt Cornwall, H&M, Next. For certain bits I also love French Connection, Nobody’s Child, Phase Eight, Hobbs, Whistles (these are usually more pricey)
I echo others though, Vinted is a great place to search for the brands you like. I often spot clothes in store then check Vinted before buying, I’ve bought many new items on there for a fraction of the retail price. It’s also a great place for finding more niche brands/ brands you may not have heard of.
CowboyLikeMe0608@reddit
Mango has some beautiful items!
KittenFunk@reddit
I've recently graduated from Primark towards Uniqlo, M&S, Cos (sales only) and I sometimes go hunting at TKMaxx. I buy little, maybe 2-4 core pieces every year, and take very good care of my clothes - to the point that I still have Primark itens bought 15 years ago.
Vinted is an option, but I like the feeling of new clothes and don't love second hand. I've seen stuff my friends have received and, apart from when it's never been used, it was all bobbled knits, little stains and fabric looking tired. Sometimes stuff stinks of cigarette or strong body odour. Shein I gave a try but decided against it as it's a gamble. It's cheap, sometimes you luck out with quality and they have designs and shapes you don't find in the UK, but some itens are pretty much unusable.
PrimaryCarpenter1070@reddit
Primark and shein.

Vinted
bageriabagel@reddit
This is the correct answer
keeponyrmeanside@reddit
Same here, but it doesn’t really help OP in terms of narrowing down brands. Vinted is overwhelming when you don’t have something specific in mind/their algorithm hasn’t figured out your tastes yet.
shhhhh_h@reddit
For OP then, my list of saved brands on Vinted list!. They’re more euro than UK brand but it’s a start, helps direct the algorithm away from FF which it’s always trying to return to.
Also, plug for r/eurofemalefashion we are small but we show up with brand advice 💪
Ok-Enthusiasm-9168@reddit
I think go to a good shopping area and try on clothes at like Cos, Mango, mint Velvet maybe Zara (though I'm not that impressed with them) etc. I just lost a lot of weight so I had to really figure out my size, what high street brands suit me etc as I couldn't shop on the high street before really. It's a good idea to just go try stuff on and then. Then you can order on vinted more confidently.
Just watch the sizing as vinted is European I'm definitely a large in Zara which is a 12. But a medium in Uniqlo. Double check if the seller doesn't make this clear.
Impetuous-soul@reddit
Came here to say this! Look at all the brands people comment below and search them on vinted!
EkoLokolola@reddit
I also came here to say Vinted! I find different styles on Pinterest that I like and then copy the style using items I find on Vinted.
I discovered I really like Jack Wills products through Vinted. Never heard of JW before being on Vinted! But found their quality is really great! And a lot of the dresses and skirts have decent sized pockets!
Sofiloco@reddit
I added it all up this weekend and in the 2 years I’ve had Vinted I’ve refreshed my entire wardrobe (and my toddler), spent £2200 and sold £2000 on Vinted. Get the odd other bit here and there so reckon I’ve spent about £500 all in on clothes in 2 years and I just about love everything in my wardrobe now
Trudisheff@reddit
This is the answer. But if you don’t mind I’ll expand a little.
The best thing about vinted is when you find a seller who is getting rid of a load of stuff but they are a) your size b) your taste and c) much richer than you. How I do this is - pick an aspirational brand for my budget and search my size - when I see see something I like scroll down to look at all the other things that person is selling - if they have a few things I like I favourite them and go back to the original search and repeat
At some point you can then look at the total cost of your “bundles” and decide which you want. The cost of postage etc is shown to you before you complete the transaction, I often take a few screenshots of different bundles so I can compare more easily.
Don’t be afraid to put in a cheeky lil offer, especially if you’re buying a few bits.
Hazzeh_Bee@reddit
What are your aspirational brands? I don't consider higher end so wouldn't know where to start. I'm usually a New Look kinda gal.
Forever_Autumn4@reddit
THIS!! Also to expand on is, the Vinted algorithm is spot on and will quickly get an idea of the style you’re looking for and refresh your feed with new items you will like. That is how you get the good quality items for a bargain in my experience!
Ok-Enthusiasm-9168@reddit
Agree. Spend some time liking without buying and you get better suggestions.
Logical_Warthog3230@reddit
If you don't know which brand you want but are looking for a fancier one, run a search in your category with a fairly high starting price, e.g. work trousers from £25.
Tick the brands from the search results. These are higher end brands. Then remove the price starting point and set your ceiling to maximum you'll pay - there are your funds.
PinacoladaBunny@reddit
Love this advice! I don’t tend to buy so many bundles but do pretty much do all my shopping on Vinted now. £100 Levi’s for £10 was today’s delightful delivery, currently wearing them feeling very pleased with myself 😂
MD564@reddit
Just to piggyback on this, make sure you use Google image search to check where the item is from, especially if it doesn't list a real retail brand. Far too many Temu sellers out there making a killing.
venuscans@reddit
You're a genius.
Anxious-Seesaw-2222@reddit
This is perfect advice.
Just to add, if you’re looking for specific stuff - like smart workwear, it’s a good shout to try a couple of bits on in store. Then you have a read of fit, so you can check out vinted. (Maybe a little cheeky, but IDGAF…)
Eg - for work dresses/suits, I went to Hobbs, which is well out of my budget, but I know I can get on vinted. Try on a couple of suits/dresses etc. Then I know that the things I buy will fit.
Women’s sizing of clothes is so vastly different across brands, that it can make it really difficult.
Also, it helps with bodily proportions - so now. I know that if I buy Hobbs it fits my torso/waist/hips, but if it’s M&S, the hips sit too high so the proportions look a bit weird and so my clothes look ill-fitting
Sensitive_Road_822@reddit
This!! I found the perfect pair of trousers in next (size 12) im usually a 14 so it was a chance I tried them on really. They were £34. Went on vinted and got them for £3! Would’ve scrolled past that size usually..

DryJackfruit6610@reddit
Same, shamelessly i buy majority of my stuff from here now.
Just makes sense, usually items are in mint condition and you get them for a fraction of the cost
Big_Stretch3684@reddit
I buy literally all my clothes on vinted now! Save so so much money and it means the clothes aren’t going into landfill so it’s a win win

Uniqlo! Simple basics in neutral colours. Comfy and timeless.
aureli_a@reddit
Vinted and Uniqlo! Uniqlo is great for shorter people like me as they offer free tailoring on pants and jeans
DisastrousCash9569@reddit
M&S mostly
avemango@reddit
Vinted - brands I look for are Olive Clothing, Uniqlo, Lucy & Yak for jeans, Mahika kala, sideline, cos, whistles for jeans and basics.
Online I go for M&S for undies and basics, Uniqlo basics, and small indie designers for one off items.

Sainsbury’s and Next.
Always been a fan of Sainsbury’s. Good value and quality is better than others (I have some things that I’ve had for years now).
Next has surprised me this year, never really bothered with it but now I have a toddler I get a lot of her clothes from there, and noticed how nice the other departments are. Bit pricier but I’ve found their underwear and jeans in particular great (used to get both from M&S but their material and quality went really poor).
hulyepicsa@reddit
Omg I had the same experience with Next! Didn’t use to go in but started checking it lately and found so many absolute gems
VanillaIcedLatteToGo@reddit
I absolutely ignored Next during my entire twenties! I can always find something. I think they’ve hit the niche of mildly trendy, but also comfy and practical. Their wide legged trousers (with elasticated waist- ha!) in striped and gingham designs are FAB! I’ve lived in them all summer!
such-a-sin@reddit
Agree, Sainsbury's clothes are actually pretty good. Next is where I always get my jeans now, they last really well and fit nicely with good pockets - winner! They do really decent basic tops as well.
Weak_Top_3464@reddit
Hush, Mint Velvet, COS, Sezane, M&S, if you buy quality pieces then they'll last longer making it cost effective in the CV long run. Buy what you like rather than what fast fashion dictates, also check out Vinted.

Charity shops. I’ve got 100% cotton, wool knitwear, wool coats, leather jackets at amazing prices. Great if you could go to more expensive areas but I’ve had luck regardless . Also car boot sales, been to a free sample sales for brands also
Puzzleheaded-Crow-45@reddit
Marks and Spencers, their jeans are excellent and they have some lovely coats and jackets for the Autumn/Winter season.
creani@reddit
Vinted and charity shops. There are great quality gems to be found for super cheap. Items made from cotton, wool, silk.
_Vogon_Jeltz_@reddit
House of Bruar, expensive at the onset but they sell staples you can wear for years. I’ve been wearing the same winter coat for 8 years that I’m going to replace this year only because I’ve lost weight and it no longer fits.
lottielifts@reddit
Along with many of the already mentioned places, Abercrombie & Fitch. It’s not for teenagers like it used to be and the quality is good! I like that their jeans come in multiple lengths and waist sizes, and their dresses also come in petite and long. Not the cheapest but I find it better value than Cos & Stories which I feel have been getting pricier.
Ok-Enthusiasm-9168@reddit
Also we need to be ok with pricier, the costs to produce have gone up and the fabrics have gotten terrible at a lot of brands. I'm old, but clothing for me is cheaper now than it was in the 90s, even if you don't factor in inflation.. something is not right about that!
Ok-Enthusiasm-9168@reddit
Their jeans are the best
hp17nw@reddit
Cos, Never Fully Dressed, Sezane, Oliver Bonas, the odd item from Zara but it never lasts. M&S are smashing it at the moment but the block they use for womenswear doesn’t fit me very well.
Someone else mentioned Abercrombie and Fitch and I’d second that, they’ve had a complete 180 from the A&F of when I was younger and are doing lovely pieces. They do a curve range in their denim which is smaller on the waist and bigger on the hips which fits me so well.
Ok-Enthusiasm-9168@reddit
Yes to these. M&s looks really mumsy on me I find. It's weird as I was a size 18 before and it was fine but now I'm a size 12 and can wear pretty much anything from other brands I look terrible in m&s.
KeepMyselfAwake@reddit
Uniqlo I recently got a haul of new work shirts from and it's all really nicely fitted. Superdry I upgraded a lot of my t-shirts to a few years ago and they're nice thick cotton and feel like will last years more. Passenger have lovely jumpers and coats. Shoes I'm a bit all over the place, I like Timberland (not just the boots), but I'm going for comfort these days and bought some nice smart trainers from Clarks recently. Jeans I've settled on G-Star Raw. Sometimes I'll go second hand one jeans but I've yet to foray into the world of Vinted.

Book yourself a stylist appointment at John Lewis, free and no obligation to buy, try a bunch of different brands / styles to find what you like and search on Vinted. I love this for when I need a refresh or I’m looking for something for an occasion. I get to sit, read and have a Prosecco while someone else gathers a bunch of stuff for me to try on. I do usually end up buying a couple of staples that work with what I have already but you don’t have to
Mikon_Youji@reddit
Charity shops mostly.
annacosta13@reddit
I like Crew Clothing Company and occasionally Jules. Jackets from Barbour because they last years and years. I’ve notice that M&S has changed massively, it doesn’t feel like fashion for old dears anymore and quality is very good too.

Among fast fashion brands (Zara, H&M, Mango, M&S etc.) Mango has the best quality using materials rather than just cheap polyester. You can add Uniqlo to this category for its value for money cashmere stuff.
If you have a bit of higher budget, you can find nicer polished things from &other stories, jigsaw, Massimo Dutti, mint velvet, lily silk etc.
If you want to buy quality, style, customer service etc and can afford all, you can look at Reiss, GANT, Ralph Lauren for great work wear and casual clothes.

I search eBay for BNWT stuff from shops I like and know how things fit; Dorothy Perkins, Next, Warehouse, Asda George, Matalan, Zara, H&M. I have got lots of good bargains this way!
Jemstone_Funnybone@reddit
Just to add to all the great suggestions here: when I am browsing online I like to try and filter by material, looking for 100% cotton, linen, merino etc.
Good quality materials that are easy to look after will make the garments last longer and they’re more comfortable to wear which will make you look more polished in the day to day.

Hobbs, Reiss, Monsoon, Mint Velvet.

lllarissa@reddit
Surprised no one has said river island. Very hit and miss but occasionally get some flashy pieces there.
Tesco and m and s, new look for work.
Hollister, Zara and it's sub brands, h and m , Primark for going out clothes. But I still wear pieces from early 20s so who cares
behehecko@reddit
agree with everyone saying M&S!! they have some lovely autumn/winter stuff coming in. I was super disappointed with H&M recently but I also just hate the central Manchester store lol. ASOS is also usually a good contender for tops

modemagazine@reddit
On the high street, NEXT and M&S have really improved their selection lately but I find the quality to be hit-and-miss. John Lewis has some interesting brands in-store like Sister Jane. I would also recommend having a look at Never Fully Dressed, Omnes, and Nobody's Child (stocked in M&S and John Lewis).
If you're looking for something more premium, Me & Em is beautiful and they have a really good sale section. I've also found a lot of good premium brands discounted on ASOS recently, but I would warn against their own brand of clothing and shoes (very hit-and-miss with quality).
If you want to learn some tips on how to spot good quality clothing (and what to watch out for), I recommend watching @wangjenniferr on Youtube or TikTok
lacr@reddit
Levis, Uniqlo, TK Maxx mainly. Also vintage and charity shops for second hand stuff
Ok_Situation_1525@reddit
Marks and Spencer’s have SO many nice things right now! I think stores vary a lot so try and find a good one! Honestly it’s the best place for a capsule wardrobe. Uniqlo is good for basics. I love the T-shirts at Cos but they are more pricey.
No-Palpitation2194@reddit
You don't need a new 'autumn wardrobe', wear what you have from last year. Unless of course you have gained or lost a lot of weight and you clothes no longer fit you; in that case, Vinted is your best friend. Stop buying from SHEIN, or TEMU or any of them horrible places. Try looking for Fatface or M&S clothes on vinted, they're good quality and will last you far longer than SHEIN.

I’ve actually been trying to do the same recently. Mango, & Other Stories, M&S (that’s how I know I’m getting old), occasionally Zara but it’s losing quality fast. H&M has gotten a lot better lately. Still one of the poorest quality of this list but is improving and super affordable
I’ve been trying to buy more upmarket items through Vinted. I love Sezanne and Cos and there’s quite a bit of their stuff on vinted
Tea_Ve@reddit
M&S have really upped their game! My teen likes loads of their stuff too. Their jeans are fab these days as well

New look is great for basics and dresses. Next do some lovely knitwear and nice formal items, I’m also loving the ‘self’ range for some casual athleisure items. I always end up buying bits from In the Style so might be worth checking them out. I love supermarket clothes as they can be on trend for cheaper, I love Asda and Tesco ranges. I also search for what I would like from these stores and then check to see if they’re on vinted - get a bargain and be more sustainable. For example I recently saw a top and jeans I wanted from new look, checked vinted and found the exact same items for so much cheaper in amazing condition. PixieDreamGoat@reddit
80% of whose clothes? Mine? Because no. The world’s clothes? Sure, if you say so - but even then, the quality is not monolithic. Shein sucks, a disturbingly high proportion of their products are of inferior quality and/or are dangerous. So… go off, I guess. Your choices suck. Enjoy your heavy metal poisoning and cheap ass clothes.

I like Jigsaw, Whistles, YMC, APC, COS, TOAST, Margaret Howell, Wrap London. But I have a very low income and can’t afford any of these brands so I get everything on Vinted and eBay. Makes more sense to me than buying lower quality, new items for similar prices that won’t last as long.

Snap! Since discovering Vinted 2 years ago, the only new items of clothing I’ve bought are underwear and a pair of White Stuff PJ bottoms in the sale (and that was only because I couldn’t find any I liked on Vinted). Great_Tradition996@reddit
I sometimes have to go to court for my job and really wanted a classic but stylish trouser suit. Could I find one anywhere on the high street? Could I heck. It’s all ‘tailored separates’ nowadays. I‘m 27 and while i do wear casual clothes a lot (including for work, I work an outreach job so it’s encouraged), I’ve been finding nice knitwear in M&S this year and Omnes. M&S really surprised me in the way that the looks were a lot more modern and/or timeless than I thought. Omnes I’ve only recently come across because they have an outlet near me, but I found a lovely cardigan in that outlet and their dresses are gorgeous too (more for events/party than everyday I’d say though, at least that’s how I wear it).
Hollister actually has really nice trousers, I’ve got linen trousers and wool-ish trousers from there, as well as a nice jumper - I do find though that about half the store usually are things I wouldn’t wear anymore (very much teen looks, which is their main client base I think).
Some things in places like fat face and sea salt I think look nice, but as a tall woman (6ft) I’ve never found anything that’s long enough for me.
I actually had good success with jeans from River Island recently, lots of choice, different lengths, and so far they’ve held up well.
Lots of people like Uniqlo, but again I don’t get on with their sizing - if you’re shorter though I’m sure it’d work.

Surprisingly, Amazon - there's some really nice stuff hidden amongst the poor quality. It's easier to find things that aren't as fashionable; I like my tops longer in the body than is popular on the high street at the moment. I look for reviews with photos to see the actual clothes people are receiving.
M&S or Next for jeans at the moment. I love Levi's and have loads, but trying to lose weight so I don't want to fork out, and they're hit and miss sizing wise so buying on Vinted is a risk.
Vinted for other brands I am familiar with. I love my Ugg boots (both the classic type for in the house and their 'normal looking' styles for out of the house) and have never bought a pair brand new from a retailer.
TK Maxx but it's luck of the draw, and the styles of top on the racks this summer haven't been my thing at all.
My coats are Dare2B - I go with plain but active waterproof or ski jackets. Usually wherever is cheapest. I do have a wool-look wrap coat that I got from Sainsbury's if I need something smarter.

Vinted and charity shops, looking for: M&S and Next mostly
I love Tu and F&F (Sainsbury’s and Tesco). Some new look bits.
I’m trying to branch out into other brands too but I’m always rubbish at finding what fits so tend to stick with what I know.
I am 33 if that helps?

24 but love these shops and they have good options for natural fiber clothes.
Uniqlo - a lot of knitwear is from here - lots of 100% wool and cotton jumpers that aren’t too expensive. & Other Stories - I got the best 100% wool coat from here, wore it everyday it wasn’t raining last winter and plan to do the same yesterday. COS - expensive but do the best 100% wool trousers here, they last so well and feel so much better to wear than polyester.
I tend to get my t shirts and things from H&M. I also find their website easiest out of most brands to search for specific materials.

Mostly M&S, Next and H&M (since that’s all we have here!) and I also like looking at Cos, Arket, Uniqlo, Mint Velvet, Sezane. I’ll look for Mango, Zara, etc on Vinted.

I get all my tops from Rapanui and all my bottoms from Lucy & Yak

Sainsbury's/marks and Spencer/Asda
BoysenberrySevere224@reddit
I find that M&S and Sainsbury’s clothes actually last through the years. For me, all my Primark and H&M stuff tends to only last short periods of time.

Charity shop and vinted.
Eyupmeduck1989@reddit
I get most of my stuff off Vinted tbh! At least then if it doesn’t suit, it doesn’t break the bank and it’s not too hard to sell it on
MermazingKat@reddit
Popsy clothing, but usually from vinted
katielikesthings@reddit
M&S, Very, Mango, COS for staple pieces (but a lot from Vinted)
samtylers@reddit
M&S & Uniqulo for me at the moment!
Commercial-Fudge7117@reddit
Jeans are new look or m&s. Tops mostly m&s. Jumpers from mango. Coats - Zara, mango and Stradivarius. I’ve noticed someone else has mentioned Uniqlo and I second that - they are generally good for everything. I got some great jumpers and sweatshirts from them last year. In autumn/winter I wear my uggs to death and I have a three trainers I circulate dependent on weather - brown adidas spezials, new balance 530s and my checkerboard vans.
Independent_Onion986@reddit
Mango, Cos, M&S, Arket, Uniqlo, Hollister & very rarely I’ll find a nice top in UO
luckyowl91@reddit
