Potential move to Dallas, not sure what I’m looking at.

Hello,
I’m an Atlanta native in deep discussions with a new company based in Dallas, that would require me to relocate. I want my gf to be as comfortable with it as possible, Im hoping we can find something like our little slice of heaven in east Atlanta. We love to go for long walks, ride bikes, enjoy local parks, while having privacy and quiet living, near a big city.
The location of the office is in the university park area, but the housing in that exact area is unaffordable. We are comfortable paying $2300-$2500 per month. Most everything I can find that we like is either in Vickery Meadows or North Dallas, I prefer Vickery Meadows simply for the 3-4 mile drive to the office, but it’s hard to get a read on the culture and vibes of the city.
If anyone can help I’d really appreciate it.

Congrats on the new potential job. Me and my girlfriend just moved into the Urby Dallas and we can’t recommend enough. We moved in a month ago and now we have a city skyline view and the amenities here are amazing. The gym here has everything you need, everything is walking distance including some of the best coffee shops in DFW, and Bishop Arts is right around the corner if you want to go have brunch and look at vintage clothing and decor. I think they’re still going a two months free deal too. PM me if you want and I can answer any questions you have.

Oh wow that looks awesome. They are flying me out tomorrow for my final interview. If time allows I’ll be checking some places out. This one will be added to the list.

Look into State Thomas! Full of young people, cafes, bars, parks, etc
We only use the car to go to work but besides that we go out to drink/eat, get coffee or even to the supermarket walking. We love it here

A lot of fun amenities, really close to shopping & eating out, outdoor activities around White Rock Lake (which is pretty rare in DFW), close to college town activities, and etc.
But the particular neighborhood you mentioned isn't the fanciest place to live. Insane amount of traffic congestion as well
UnkleJrue@reddit (OP)
Oh man white rock lake looks awesome.
Sanchastayswoke@reddit
It’s my favorite area here

I’m looking around this area and it looks like exactly what I’m looking for. My dad would be thrilled that their road trip could include the boat. That’s a huge plus.

Motorized boats prohibited in white rock. Sailing or kayaking lake.
Montallas@reddit
Motors are allowed, but must be 9.9hp or less.
UnkleJrue@reddit (OP)
Ah got it. Thank you

Explore Lower Greenville; walkable, close to your work, the lake, and plenty of great food

One of the best places in DFW. Try look for places in Northeast dallas or Lakewood, or old east Dallas.
If you enjoy biking, areas adjacent to WRL is unbeatable.

Thank you so much! Never lived somewhere without state tax but I’m familiar with how it works spending so much time in Florida. Would I expect to pay daily tolls on that route?
pasak1987@reddit
No, that area relies on i75, which is an interstate highway.
But, do expect tk use toll roads on a lot of other places.
UnkleJrue@reddit (OP)
That’s funny, nothing would remind me of Atlanta quite as much as traffic on I-75! Really appreciate the info here!

Check out The Villages pocket in Dallas. It has some great amenities and there are some affordable older units.

Just remember that half the year will be so flipping hot you won't be wanting to be outside!!
UnkleJrue@reddit (OP)
How is the heat early in the morning before sun comes up during that time? Atlanta heat is pretty strong, and I normally finish my exercise by 7 am.
pasak1987@reddit
"Hotlanta" got nothing on Dallas.
DoubleBookingCo@reddit
In that case you’ll be fine. It’s not that different from Atlanta heat wise

And what about the rolling power outages and stuff? Will certain places be better for that? The way TX does power confuses me
DoubleBookingCo@reddit
Not something to really worry about on a daily basis unless there’s a freak winter storm like we had. We don’t have rolling blackouts. Feel free to message me if you have a lot of questions.
UnkleJrue@reddit (OP)
Okay cool thank you! Yeah that winter storm and the stuff I read about the spot pricing for power really freaked me out during that time.
DoubleBookingCo@reddit
Yeah that was kinda a freak accident like Hurricane Katrina level of failure
UnkleJrue@reddit (OP)
Got it. Thanks for that. I’ll take you up on a direct message if I have any more questions.

Awesome!!!

Check out The Village in East Dallas. It's really close to White Rock Lake and to commute to University Park would be easy. There's a wide range in price; but the newer, nicer buildings are within your range.
UnkleJrue@reddit (OP)
Wonderful. Thank you so much.
DoubleBookingCo@reddit
I would recommend living in Knox, Henderson, Oak Lawn, or Lower Greenville. These are all safe locations with young people and lots of things to do.
Your commute to the office would be maybe 10 minutes drive from those locations, 15-20 if traffic was horrible.
UnkleJrue@reddit (OP)
Awesome, thank you for this. I’ll check these out.
DoubleBookingCo@reddit
Just adding on that you don’t want to live North of University Park if you enjoy a more urban walkable environment. In that area it gets way more spread out and suburban and you’ll be in your car driving 100% and depending on highways for everything. — Versus the neighborhoods I mentioned which will be full of people walking around, exercising, shopping etc.
UnkleJrue@reddit (OP)
Okay perfect, yeah that’s what I want to avoid. I feel like I can adapt to whatever, but main priority is keeping her comfortable and open to the move.
DoubleBookingCo@reddit
You’ll find Dallas and Atlanta are very similar in a lot of ways. But I can understand not wanting to move!
Kathw13@reddit
Farmers Branch is nice.
UnkleJrue@reddit (OP)
Thank you! Seems like nice parks which is great for us. I’ll add this to the list!
Kathw13@reddit
It's much cheaper than inside 635. The public services are great. I used to commute to Hillcrest and Walnut Hill will no issues but that was 10 years ago.
UnkleJrue@reddit (OP)
What is 635?
Kathw13@reddit
The middle loop around Dallas. I-635 or LBJ
UnkleJrue@reddit (OP)
Ah got it. Thank you.
