To my cohort still fist bumping post-50!

So many threads in this community looking for company with “my breakfast consists of 10 pills,” or “aging sucks, my back always hurts.” Womp womp! This is a call for all my Gen Xers who are still holding it down, enjoying life, and can still bop their heads to a sick beat.
Last night, out til 3:30 am at a club in NYC dancing to some EDM spun by the great Benny Benassi partying with an amazing diverse group of people. Not tired. Not sore. Not hung over. Kids back at college. Just happy that I’m still holding it down despite being born in ‘73!
Now, who is with me?!
ONROSREPUS@reddit
Well I am definitely not into the same music as you are but rock on to what you like. However our attitudes are very similar.

I can’t afford cocaine
TreaclePerfect4328@reddit
Ohhh man. Real cocaine...sniff...I miss it. Sniff....sniff...
2Dogs3Tents@reddit
The mid to late 80s escobar coke was the best. It had a yellow or pink tinge, was kinda shiny and flaked off in chunks. It was rocket fuel compared to what came later. Glad i got out of that game long ago but damn the 80s coke was seriously great.
thatsnotyourtaco@reddit
Is it just me or were generations longer back then because boomers and Gen X you know like I hear some of you Gen Xers talk about doing cocaine in the 80s and I’m solid Gen X but in 1984 I was in fourth grade, in 1988, I was in eighth grade and I feel like millennial Gen Y, zoomer’s just popping out left and right now.
GasmaskTed@reddit
Oldest Xers are a decade older than you (and youngest 5 years younger), so there is significant variance, but it’s true for the other generations as well, you just aren’t as attuned to the differences because they’re all different from your experience. Some boomers were graduating high school less than a year after JFK died, some were graduating high school when Reagan was President.
TreaclePerfect4328@reddit
The fish scale!! It was good times.
Beginning-Spend-3547@reddit
What about acid washing 95 percent to clean clean. That’s a whole different ball game!
Soggy_Motor9280@reddit
I only came across the fish scale once in my life!!! We got a few ounces of it and it had stamped on it ( cause it was a brick) Republic of Columbia.

I have it on very good authority that it is, hmm, "a hell of a drug". Also, that Coca Cola legitimately produces medical cocaine as a by-product of making soda, and it sells it to the medical establishment.

I’m still get down but I’m not still doing the college thing. We had our time. This is theirs and honestly I don’t relate to them. Still love music, hate going to a bar and nuts to butts beers and have to stand the whole time. Maybe not fist bumping you OP but I tip my cap.
majestwest13@reddit
i stay home 90% of the time, but in april i Finally got a chance to see soul coughing. i managed to stand and dance All Night. i was amazed, im on my feet all day, 7 days a week and am usually so tired. not that night. it was so much fun.
Lucky_Guess4079@reddit
I attended Drop Kick Murphy’s live last month the Gen X power rock energy was STRONG! I highly recommend!
bendar1347@reddit
Same dude! Was it the Tacoma show?
Lucky_Guess4079@reddit
Nope, Buffalo NY. ROCKING!
PuzzleheadedRice6114@reddit
lol, I went to a Kathleen Edward’s concert and not only was the entire crowd 40-60 years old, but the whole concert was dead silent between songs, to the point where she commented on it. All of us gray-hairs weren’t yelling and shit, just respectfully waiting for the next song. It’s weird to see that much wine and IPAs consumed at a rock concert.
AntiPepRally@reddit
I bet the show ended long before 3:30AM
PuzzleheadedRice6114@reddit
Well, duh. I was in bed asleep by midnight.
Accomplished_Fan3177@reddit
Pixies midsummer in Boston. The crowd added a new meaning to "all ages show."

My favourite concert of the year! They rock.

You do you, man. Clubbing is not interesting to me, but I love playing guitar with my band at the local bars in my town.

We're doing a 65 mile bicycle ride today. May not be your idea of fun, but it's mine. I fucked my liver enough and have seen enough sunrises on the way home after a long night.

nirreskeya@reddit
Heck yeah! I got up early for this ride today. I'm not so fast and don't go so long but it was a good ride nonetheless.
Catfiche1970@reddit
Awesome! It was a gorgeous day to ride here.
edasto42@reddit
I just went to see Cyndi Laupers final concert on her final tour last night at the Hollywood bowl and was almost ugly crying at it. It not only was a great performance but she called up some friends as well. The first guest was Joni Mitchell and my jaw dropped. Then John Legend comes out to do Time After Time. Then she pulls out SZA to sing True Colors (with it came a stand of resistance by waving the LGBTQ+ flag to a standing ovation). And then closed out the show with motherfucking Cher coming out to do Girls Just Want to Have Fun (which became Girls Just Want to Have Fundamental Rights by the end of the song). This was capped off by a fireworks display. It was amazing! And it was filmed for an upcoming special.
This week I’ve got rehearsals for my two bands for upcoming shows and studio work. Then going to see Flamingo Lips/Modest Mouse on Thursday and I just got guest list to see Supergrass on Friday. It’s gonna be a week.
ithinkiknowstuphph@reddit
What if aging sucks and their back hurts and they take 10 pills AND they don’t let that get them down and still live life to the fullest?
SlaveToShopping@reddit
This! Sure I take vitamins/supplements (I don’t need any medications thankfully), sure I need to be a little more conscious that I’m not a youngster but I still kick ass in spin class, travel like a backpacker and stay out past by bedtime. Music festivals, late dinners that go into the wee hours, midnight dips in the ocean/pool are all in the table.
I’m not missing out on anything. And I’m not bitching about anything either. Very grateful.
Morecowbell_youFool@reddit
I went on a hike today with my daughter, 26, and told her she could pick the place we went hiking. New place to me,58, so we go. A place called table rock in Oneonta. So off we go and it's really nice. Then we hit the trail and it's comfortable not much slope. Talking and laughing then we start going up. And up and up, My god i am active but this was painful, calves burning, I joked to my daughter I wished I was 20 years younger because I would be running up these trails. I was really happy today and would not trade a minute of it. Makes me happy my kid still thinks I'm capable.
TC_Stock@reddit
Cant say Ive been dancing at clubs in NYC but that sounds amazing. I take no medications, watch what I eat, work out religiously and feel great though.
_WillCAD_@reddit
Dude, I never did that shit when I was 25.
These days the only fist bumping I do is when I get a parking space close to a building.

Yea the divide of those who ate crap and put crap into their bodies vs those who didn't is very very apparent now. I am with you..

I mean, I could, but... I vividly remember the creepy adults showing up to the college parties and to the club. I'd rather hang out with people within 20 years of my age than be the pervy-looking weirdo making the 20-somethings uncomfortable.
nycvhrs@reddit
But my kids was in the band 😬
ManyARiver@reddit
You can stay as long as you promise NOT to go up to any group of young'uns and say that to them.

Exactly. I don't know why people forget all about being a creep when they get older and become the creep. LOL
Cyborg59_2020@reddit
Exactly. This is why day parties were invented.
jRok57@reddit
Fuck yeah, dude!
I don't do the club scene anymore, but I have house parties at least once a month. We usually stay up past 2, pass out wherever you can find, then I cook brunch around 11.

I'm really happy for you! I did that scene in my 20s and that was enough, especially since I worked in bars through my 30s. Could I stay out until 3am partying? Sure, but that sounds like a nightmare now.
rattfink11@reddit
What if I told you I took 10 pills to party at a Benny Benassi event? 😂
Intelligent_Story443@reddit
I would but I hate EDM. Any classic rock or 80s cover band and I'm there!

That sounds like a nightmare. I’m going to smoke a joint, read a book, and hit the hay.
Sea-Poetry2637@reddit
My back only hurts because I still ski and mountain bike like I did in the 90s. That only requires one pill some days. The recreational drugs take care of the rest.
sfdsquid@reddit
I drive 3 hours alone to see the Descendants last month and I would say the audience was almost entirely GenX punks. It was a great show. It's not like they're my favorite band, but I have decided to go to as many shows of my old standards as possible, even though I'll probably be going alone.
I wish I could have afforded to see the Dead Kennedys when they were in Boston a few months ago, but it was like $175/ticket! Not very punk rock.

evilBogie666@reddit
Man!! I bet that was an insane show! I’d love to see Benny! I went see crystal method a couple of years ago. Went solo and sober. It fucking rocked!!!

Crystal Method seem to like my backwater hometown Tucson for some reason so I've been lucky enough to see them (just him now?) a few times. Great show!

I miss being out until 3:30 am in NYC. I remember some crazy times being out until 8 am 😁. Now that I'm in the PNW and everything closes at 9 pm I only stay up late when I'm gaming, which is something I never did in my 20s & 30s.

We do late night/dancing etc at bars maybe once a quarter with our friends .. usually need a day or two to recover
I drank a bit yesterday and today I was out doing yard work, definitely overdid it… had to take a shower and sit under a fan.

Mild mannered, pill taking, joint complainer by morning. Spends the evening, and wee hours of the morning, doing what my kids wish they were doing.
Major-State1722@reddit
This is me too. I go out dancing at our local 80's night they have once a month, as well as hitting up goth night when I can. I love it, it heals me. But you better believe the next day I'm completely worthless 🤣

Generally, try to see Deadmau5 once a year. Crash at 2-3am. Get busy living or get busy dying.
scottwricketts@reddit
Also I drank semiprofessionally when I was stationed in Korea, that pretty much killed my urge to club when I came back to the states.
scottwricketts@reddit
I took my teenaged sons to the RTJ / Wu-Tang show and we partied pretty dam hard.
Mermaid_Lily@reddit
I take a multivitamin and an iron pill. No prescriptions yet. I'm 53. That said, I do have back and knee pain, and sometimes I gripe about it. But I'm not decrepit. I never did the club scene. Not a party girl. I got married at 19 and started having kids. So I kinda missed that whole scene and now, I just don't want to be part of that.
I DO wish I'd travelled. I still want to see the world. <3
Centrist808@reddit
To each their own. I'm near 60 and cut 7 trees that fell in the wind yesterday. Fired up the chainsaws and the John Deere. The air was so lovely. There was finally a small bit of rain and it just felt so good to be alive!

The thought of being out listening to EDM and dancing until 3:30 in the morning sounds terrible to me. In fairness though, it would have sounded terrible to me when I was in my twenties too lol. Just not my thing.
Replace EDM with metal, punk, or hip hop though and that's a different story.
PagingDrTobaggan@reddit
1970 here. Still get out to see some EDM (CloZee, Polish Ambassador, and Mersiv recently), metal (Meshuggah, Carcass, Gojira lately) and other (Childers, Sturgill, DBT) shows. Also play hockey a couple times a week.

gumercindo1959@reddit
Atta boy. I’m 50 and my wife and I still go out salsa dancing when we can get a sitter
coconutcremekitty@reddit
I’m in your cohort and have some years on you, 1968. At a festival on day three. Just waking up at 11am after hitting an after party. Doing the same thing I’ve been doing since the 80’s but now I do it VIP, drug free, with supportive footwear, a nice hotel, and even more of a don’t give an f attitude.
I saw Benny Benassi’s set Friday night before heading over to Ray Volpe’s set because I like to visit the past (satisfaction came out over 20 years ago!) but I don’t live there! I joke that I’m the old lady at the club but I’m not treated that way at all. The kids I meet are all incredibly kind, are fist bumping me and tell me I’m not old lol (they are wrong) I’m making new friends all the time & we run into each other at different festivals. Might be different for men but I don’t see it.
But let’s be real. An active life is a privileged one both by health and finances. I count my blessings and I don’t judge my friends of any age, or my husband, who have different priorities, family obligations, abilities or health concerns in life. And I have friends who arent dancing but running ultra marathons, going on motorcycle trips (whatever they call that), traveling the world, or other amazing life adventures that don’t interest me.
Now I gotta go have my breakfast of pills because before I head over for day three. Excited to see REZZ tonight because kick ass talented women are the best.

3 days this week I towed my 17' long kayak with my bicycle a 1/2 mile to my local put in spot, kayaked 5-8 miles, towed it home, showered, hung out with my wife and kids, then rode my bike 2 miles to see different local bands, then rode my bike around for another 8-10 miles.
I try to see live music at least once or twice a month, and plenty of times more than that.

59f and I still make it to a couple concerts a year. Still have a few vodka sprites. Planning to go to a blowout Halloween party. I have nothing to prove. It's all good.
Texas_Crazy_Curls@reddit
I can still party but in moderation. For example, last weekend we day drank at a resort pool. Danced along with the dj pumping amazing beats. Met a bunch of cool people. Pretty sure we killed 3 buckets between the two of us. Went back to our room and decided to take a beer nap. Beer nap turned into an all nighter 12 hours of sleep. Felt great the next morning.
When we go 4 wheeling I can do a heavy amount partying but I’m always the first to bed. My body has a kill switch for when I’ve had enough to drink.
AntiPepRally@reddit
3:30AM? Nope, I could still do it occasionally in my 40s but that was the last gasp. I leave the clubs to the young whipper snappers
HighOnGoofballs@reddit
I don’t want to. It gets too loud and too crowded and too many assholes that late, plus the entire next day is ruined. Maybe the next two days
If I want to get hammered, which I still do at times, I daydrink. The sun it out, people are in good moods, stuff is cheaper, and I can take a 2pm nap then get high and order pizza and go to bed sober and feel great the next day

Yes! Y'all, I know probably every one of us has the aging problems of degenerative disc disease, arthritis and any number of health issues. (I myself have been in a hospital room for over a week with meningitis. I am responding well to treatment.) I need to say, keep moving guys. Just always move. Get up and walk. You will lose it if you don't use it. I watched my own mother park herself on the couch in her 50s and never got up til she died at 82. She was miserable.
Please move my friends, nothing crazy, just be active. Take stairs if you are able. Engage in kindness. I don't want us immobilized and hospitalized in our 70s, 80s.

1970, no medications, no health issues.
While I technically could do all that and feel no pain the following day, that was never my scene. I definitely don't want to be hanging with a crowd of 20 & 30 year olds now, lol.
The only exception is my nephew's hardcore band. For them, I'll go hang with the twentysomethings, but otherwise, I don't see the appeal.

My ex used to work for a 65-ish CPA that always wanted to fist bump and do these elaborate handshakes. Sir, you're in you mid 60's and a millionaire CPA with a ranch in Fredericksburg, TX. Shake my hand like an adult.

Which club were you at? I’d be curious about an over-50 club scene in NYC.

I used to live to go out, have fun, dance, drink, fuck, etc., but now I listen to modern music, make great playlists, dance in my house, enjoy my workouts, my walking, etc….but dude, an old man dancing in a club is just not a good look. It’s just NOT. I have friends who still “go out” every weekend, and good for them, I guess. These are the same friends who used to look at the 50+ guys in the bar and talked about them.
If you want to look and act like a fool, do it at a wedding or something, that’s kind of expected lol.

Here’s to my 60 year old ass staying up all night to watch the sun come up. Camp fires ROCK! Going to hate myself tomorrow but for now, time for another round of puff puff pass with my wife and then a quick nap.
Tariovic@reddit
I am definitely much slower, right up until I'm in a place with loud rhythmic music. Then I can't stand still. I get up next day aching, but I still love to get down when the opportunity arises.
zappyface1@reddit
Man I did all my club hopping back in the mid 80’s to early 90’s on the Jersey shore! Damn the club’s were so fun! One night in Asbury Park at the Pony or Mrs Jay’s. Then the next Seaside, walking the boardwalk and hitting the bars along the way! Now, give me a camp fire and the woods! And of course my RV! Now I love the quiet of the woods!

49 and shooting for the long haul. Occasional back pain but I have tools to keep it at bay. Not doing the ten pills thing as long as I can help it, yet stupid asses still wonder why I eat so much spinach and blueberries and minimize garbage foods. Everyday alternating between running, skateboarding, and bicycling. Not an EDM fan but in the pit for Anthrax, Body Count, and Babymetal's entire sets lately with energy buzzing for days after each show. No hangovers but had to say bye to drinking or I wouldn't be doing as much. Glad I fired other bad habits long ago, as the amount of people our age having strokes and aneurisms is beyond terrifying.
Yes I'm grateful for this health and energy.

I dj and stay out till 4 often, drug free except the occasional small dose of mushrooms. Even through a small “boiler room style” b-day party for my 50th this year.

Me! So many of friends act like life ended at 40.

Congrats on either having good genes or not having them kick in yet. We should all be as cool and lucky as you.

I’m with you on the pills/aches’I’m old shit I see in this sub. This shit kills the vibe and comes off a just whining. We ain’t dead yet, fuckers!
I’m still getting after it. I’m not into the whole late night scene, but I’m staying active from a physical fitness perspective. At least 30 miles per week running plus climbing outside X2 per week.

I'm 50 and I do me, got nothin to prove.

I still bop my head to a sick beat, but I prefer that beat to be before 10pm

Man that sounds like fun! Good on you for staying young.

Good for you! Also born in 73 and would love to see Benassi! I still go clubbing occasionally, go to gigs a lot and Glastonbury every year. Still love discovering new bands, travelling, doing new things and absolutely loving life.
Due-Day-45@reddit
I don’t do house/techno no more, but I won Headbanger of the Evening award at a Pigsx7 concert two weeks ago, and I’m 53. I still get into mosh pits and freak like f’ing crazy. Young people and older people always compliment me on my dancing, and I’ve (fortunately/unfortunately) become a Daddy that gets attention from guys in their 20’s and 30’s. And when I did do electronic music, I always gave the public what they wanted. I am still theperson that always starts the dance.
Due-Day-45@reddit
P.s Rock shows rarely go past 11:30. Get on the rock n roll train! I like to go to bed at 9:30.

Man, I wish I had some molly.

Not a clubber but I do CrossFit regularly and I'm heading to British Columbia right this minute to have a week of single track dirt bike riding. Then another week riding in Utah.
SF_turophile@reddit
54 and still going to concerts, exploring art & culture, always learning. Fist bump!

Not me.
I'm annoyed when people mention their age "50 and still rocking" or whatever
It's not a contest, it's life and age is just a number. Have fun and stay healthy

I was born in 73, My 5 year old stayed the night at Nana and Papa's
I Stayed up til 2 am building a new camp in Fallout, Although it not uncommon for me to stay up late, I work 2nd shift. Bedtime is usually 12:30-1 am
I Live in the middle of cornfields, There is no Sick Beats Dancing for me. I dont know that life. I feel like crap because I stayed up too late drinking MtDew.

no drugs for me at 51 lol but i’m still killing it in the gym everyday, listening to techno and taking several trips per year. bedtime is 10pm now tho
Sheila_Monarch@reddit
I still do two major EDM festivals a year. Granted, I’m either in glamping tent with AC and real mattress or renting an RV, but I’m still seeing sunrises with my 50+yo friends after all “the kids” are passed out in their tents.
Sense_Difficult@reddit
I'm all for people having fun and doing their thing. But it's a bit odd to read this like you seem to interpret people over 50 (I was born in 71) as not wanting to hang out in a club dancing to EDM until 3 am because we're old, or our back hurts, or we're on too many pills.
None of that is true for most people I know around my age. It's not because of that, it's because it seems boring and lame now. It was fun when I was in my 20s. And concerts for me are just packed with way too many people.
But if that's what makes your life feel alive, you do you! Just know that some of us who prefer to sit in our own house and listen to music on our deck with our spouses aren't being old fuddy duddies. We've just got a different lifestyle now.

This sounds exhausting, pathetic, and pointless.

I would've loved to have seen Benassi spinning the platters. Good on you for being able to be out there and dancing with the crowd.
One of my late-Millennial neighbors started fist-bumping with me recently. I'm happy to do it, but not sure if it's a sign of friendship or just recognition of another person who's a fist-bumper.
soifua@reddit
1970 here.
Was never much for clubbing, but cool that it’s your thing.
But fuck slowing down.
Sure, I can’t always remember the name of that actor in that one show. It’s right in the top of my tongue though. But I am as active as I’ve been all my life and I will not let a sore back or bad night of sleep slow me down. I broke my hip in a cycling accident 13 years ago, so that I got that out of the way.
No one or nothing (except maybe my knees eventually) is going to stop me skiing, hiking, cycling, playing pickleball or anything else I want to do.
Old_Use7058@reddit
Benny Bennassi! I’d be right there with ya approaching 50 rapidly.

I fist bump my father in law before I leave his dementia facility, does that count?
