I (and everyone I knew) thought that beanie babies were ridiculous and only collected by morons. No idea how actual adults got conned into these dumb things
Same… worthless paper. About ten years ago I chucked a box of 3-4k “commons” in a goodwill donation bin. There’s a high likelihood they just tossed them out.
I love the folks that tried to cash in at the end of the craze. "I just ordered a bunch of those beanie baby things for cheap!" ...yeah bud, good luck with that.
I don't understand the "collector" mentality/habit, especially the amount of money people are willing to pay for silly things like printing errors, like the tag with this beanie baby or with coins that are missing certain identifying marks. To each their own, though.
In 1995/1996 my father came back from a business trip to china with a literal trad bag full of ‘rare’ counterfeit beanie babies . My then 14 y/ o brother managed to sell them online for a small sum with an understanding all profits would go towards a stock investment of some sort .
The family was torn between putting all the illicit beanie baby money into Amazon or palm pilot stock . We chose palm pilot my dear reader . Easy come, easy go.
I have a few of them, but it was because I thought those particular ones were cute. I never understood why people thought they would become valuable? They were cute little beanie toys, like many other stuffed toys before and since.
My mom was friends with our local florist shop owner, which was the only place in town that ordered in and carried Beanie Babies. The show owner would hold one back of each that came in weekly for my mom, she developed quite a collection, and sadly we never sold them when we should have.

Just another one of the things labeled “collectible” in the 90s which creates the inverse effect of intrinsic value.
ThemanfromNumenor@reddit
Yeah - baseball cards in the late 80s to mid 90s was the one I fell for. Worthless.
But, thankfully, also cheap.
mnfimo@reddit
Okay but baseball cards were fun and involved a sport and tied into how the player did to some extent. Beanie babies were just random stuffed animals
ThemanfromNumenor@reddit
For sure- which is why I collected baseball cards (and football cards!) and why I always thought Beanie Babies were dumb

Yeah…I tried to donate a bunch once, and they didn’t even want them, lol.

lol, I mean, seriously- they are just stuffed animals. Hard to understand how it was ever possible!

"It can only rise in value"
If you think about it, this is another way of saying "it is worthless". It's the only way it can't fall in value.
Granted- that was more often said about collectible plates. Beanie Babies at least had some intrinsic value as a stuffed toy for a child.
ThemanfromNumenor@reddit
Haha- true enough. All those mass produced “collectibles” were such a scam.

People are lucky enough to own a mint beanie baby?

When NFT’s came along I started calling them Digital Beanie Babies.
And I was right.

But… can you throw NFTs at your siblings during breakfast?
brakeb@reddit
Except people still like beanie babies
DoctorFenix@reddit
No one likes beanie babies. They are STUCK with Beanie Babies.
Ineedavodka2019@reddit
My kids got many for free at garage sales when they were young.
brakeb@reddit
Some folks stuck with NFTs too...

My mom’s.
She still has them, she uses some to decorate her Christmas tree. It’s kinda cute.

I’m concerned they won’t get its true value. The heart tag needs a plastic heart protector. Amateur.

If you’d dumped the Palm Pilot stock at the right time it would have been lucrative.
