The Powerball draws for a lump sum of $453.1 million tonight. What aircraft are you buying and why?

I’d enjoy a Caravan, PC-12, or Kodiak to fly the family around. Once I trick the wife into buying the first I’ll buy more. Maybe a cub for number 2.
Sad-Umpire6000@reddit
A PT-19. After getting a couple hundred hours in it, then a T-6. A few hundred in that, and then a an F6F. (I love Mustangs and Corsairs, but there just aren’t that many Hellcats out there.)
And an RV-8. I really miss mine that I sold to get a Cessna because we needed the seating and couldn’t afford an RV-10. And an Ercoupe because they’re just fun, neat little planes.
Netjets for going places.

Paranoma@reddit
You will with all the chicks you get with the Powerball winnings.
ghjm@reddit
…and you do have a genuine need for a CJ1?
zonka81@reddit
I sell Phenoms for a living. I’d say about 60% of guys I sell 300/300Es to don’t actually need that caliber of airplane. But most are owner pilots with a lot of money and they want the biggest and fastest jet they can fly single pilot
cowsmakemehappy@reddit
How lucrative is a job doing high $ sales like that? Does it pay significantly better than something like ordinary tech sales?
zonka81@reddit
It depends. Depends on the size of the brokerage company you work for, their reputation and how much you want to make. I’m still pretty young, but I know guys 20-30 years senior to me that have started their own brokerage companies and a large percentage of them own jets.
YakVivid6538@reddit
A 300 is bigger than a CJ? I only ever flew the 100 but I always felt tiny

SirEDCaLot@reddit
First- the goal is not to blow money on something. I want to keep the majority of the winnings as a nest egg, invest it, and the interest/dividends pays for fuel/maintenance. Plus, as a pilot, I want to be able to reasonably fly it and enjoy flying it. So while I could blow a ton of money on a giant business jet and then spend $10k/hr including the necessary copilot, I'd rather not.
Personally I'd probably get something like a Cirrus SF50 Vision jet. Yes I know in similar price range you can get larger planes that fly higher, fly faster, fly farther, etc. And a lot of people will say the only reason to get a Vision is so you can say 'I have a jet'. But SF50 offers a pretty low hourly cost of operation, and it's overall designed for private pilot owner/operators, unlike most others. The limited endurance of 3.5 hours is not a problem because that's about bladder time anyway (especially if one has kids along). Any longer and you either want a much bigger plane with a lav (requiring a second pilot) or you're going to be stopping anyway regardless of fuel.
In exchange for 'overpaying for a stupid aircraft' you get an insanely comfortable cabin (doesn't matter to pilots, DOES matter to family/passengers), a safe aircraft, and a nice way to get the family or some friends to vacation in style. Plus it fits in a standard T-hangar.
druuuval@reddit
I watched a Vision Jet owner/operator try to get his plane to start with a broom stick a couple months ago. Apparently the blades seized up? Not sure if that’s a common thing but it unsold me pretty quick on the VJ.
SirEDCaLot@reddit
Um.... is there a video of that?
TBH I don't think I'd want to poke a ~$million engine with a broom stick as my first troubleshooting step.
druuuval@reddit
That was my thought as well, but I learned early in my FBO days, don’t offer suggestions to millionaires unless they ask you were the good taco stands are.
SirEDCaLot@reddit
oh you mean you saw this in person lol. I thought you meant a video.
Your lesson is wise. The dude who buys a $3.5mil aircraft and then would rather whack delicately balanced parts of the $1mil engine with a stick rather than spend the $40 to rent a a piston engine heater cart and a few feet of extra hose or the $200 to get the local A&P to have a look, probably doesn't want to hear what a bad idea that is.
poisonandtheremedy@reddit
$453,000,000 gets you lets say $271,800,000 after taxes more or less, at 5% withdrawal rate generates $13,590,000 annually, inflation adjusted, for 30-40 years easy with basic investing.

A 757 or 717 sim would probably be nice too. They're days are limited at this point unfortunately, so they'll probably be cheaper to buy.
StarlightLifter@reddit
The 738 is what I want to fly. Life circumstances made it non viable as a career. Could I theoretically fly one with enough money? Yes.
I would not, however, go joyriding my own 737 for my own benefit. Too much ecological impact for so few if I were to just go whipping one around. Fun in the sim though.
BuzzTheTower12@reddit
Fair points, I wasn’t really thinking about the ecological impact. It would be pretty cool though, to go joyriding in a private 737. Maybe if one can gather 150 passengers, then it would make sense.

MiniTab@reddit
Having flown charter, but now spent 15 years at the airlines… There’s absolutely no way I’d step foot on a random charter flight outside of an established company like NetJets. You might end up with a good pilots or total shit pilots. Nothing standardized like 121.
yawara25@reddit
If you want to do a bit of vetting, you can ask a charter company for the crew's hours in type and they'll tell you. At least that's what we do where I work. It won't give you a definitive pictures of "good pilots or total shit pilots", but it gets you in the right direction.
MiniTab@reddit
Unfortunately total hours give a very limited window into the performance of a pilot. It’s better than nothing, but from what I’ve personally seen in the 135 world it wouldn’t be enough for me.
PT6A-27@reddit
I’m with you on that one. I spend enough time in an airplane as it is - why would I want to spend my own money to spend more time in one? I’d buy myself a decked-out sailing yacht and some beachfront property in the Caribbean, and I’d never see snow again unless I felt like going on a ski trip. I’ll happily fly business class to and from, that’ll scratch the flying itch for me.

cumulusgoblin@reddit (OP)
Never heard of this, looks awesome. I always thought the Avanti was sexy but damn.
GaughanFan@reddit
Yeah it was a failure due to Beech not being able to market it and for selling it at too high a price. If the FAA had let it be built according to Rutan's original vision, it would have coast to coast capability, capable of 350 knots cruising, etc etc. But I digress. It's easily my favorite plane and its a tragedy that it failed.
ghjm@reddit
For $450 million you could easily afford to have the original design built as an experimental. Or even better, hire Scaled Composites to produce a new design with 4 seats and a 61 knot stall speed (and other parameters maximized within that limit), so it qualifies as a light sport under MOSAIC 2.0.

NewYork-Paki@reddit
You giving out 350 million to friends and family?
LPNTed@reddit
So...as others have noted, it's not as much as you thought.. but if I can do what I want I'm planning on I want my friends and family about $66m. The thing that has been told to me in another thread is you can't just say...give someone else $10m and expect them to be able to keep $10m. But, if I can find creative ways around that, that's what I want to do.
LPNTed@reddit
With the new roll over, I'm now up to a planned $86m in disburments to friends and family.
NewYork-Paki@reddit
You can set up investments that pay you returns, and you can deposit half those returns into your friends and families' accounts on a monthly basis and reinvest the other half to keep it growing forever. After a few years, if you notice people are managing the money they have well you can extend them the option to take the lump sum or keep the monthly withdrawals.
LPNTed@reddit
This reads pretty smart...I will be hiring the smartest people I can find to figure this out.

There are addicts in every profession but having testing requirements is standard in most occupations worth their salt. Two helicopters: A MD-500 for fun and an EC155 for range/travel w/ family and friends.
A Zenith STOL for the Bushes, PC-12 for short/regional travel, an ICON A5 and an amphibious 208 for the water, and (call me cliche) a SR22 for safe, everyday flying.
After taxes you’d get 250-300ish million depending on the state and jets are still expensive. I’d use one just a few times a year and it doesn’t fit my aviation interest either. I’d just charter one when I need one.

I deeply want to build some day. RV-10 would be the dream build. Kit that thing out with a super comfortable luxurious interior, avionics for XC IFR. I'm a simple man. Part of that equation is buying a house with a garage where I could actually do the build.
If I'm buying, it's a Cirrus Vision Jet SF50.
Yes, there are planes that can carry more people or more cargo but for what my typical mission looks like, an SF50 or RV-10 would also be just perfect.

Probably a stationary or SR-22. Something I would actually be able to fly a lot and stay proficient in that’s capable of doing some really cool things. Bigger trips I’d probably just charter. I love flying myself and the joy of GA trips. I feel like a private jet would kill that for me
mobius270@reddit
I've actually been thinking about this for a while. Would start my own foundation and buy a bunch of warbirds, flying/static displays and build a museum hangar co-located with one for me. Would be cool to get that F4 on controller for a half million. Flying it/upkeeping it might be a different story. I feel like it would be reasonable to maintain insurance and fly 1 or 2 of the warbirds each year, maybe alternate which ones, but maybe it's way more money than I'm even imagining.
In my state, it looks like you'd end up with 240 million after taxes. I figure the total I will be left with after donations, sharing with friends/family, and buying everything I could ever want would conservatively be 150 million. Still being conservative, assuming a 5% return on however you invest that would give you 7.5 million a year. Call it 3.75 million after taxes and everything. Now here's the thing, from what I've read the cheapest jet you can get into is the vision jet for 3-3.5 million. Astonishingly the operating costs were quoted as a half million a year. I haven't looked at other jets much, but if they are running a similar ratio of 1/6th of the purchase price as their operating cost, I'm not sure I'd be comfortable buying anything more than a vision jet. Like I know you have 150 million in the bank, but conceptually spending a 6th of your yearly income or more on operating a jet seems prohibitively expensive, even at that level.
Maybe I'm just too poor to understand, but it's fun to play these scenarios out!
cumulusgoblin@reddit (OP)
A museum would be a great idea. You’re going to have a lot of free time and this a really cool way to give back. Especially if you could set up community fly ins and air shows.
I agree about yearly cost adding up. Definitely why I would want something like a caravan.

With $250M in my pocket after taxes, I’d probably not be quite ready to spend 80M on an airplane. So the $453 mil is after taxes from the original $1B jackpot. I've got a bit of money already in the SGOV bond ETF which is something like 4.5%. Put $400 mil in there and you get $18 mil per year. With the rest I'm buying a G-550 for around $20 mil, calling up a few of my buddies from the G-IV days that I enjoyed flying with the most, and we're heading to Flight Safety. A couple of them have since gotten a G-V type already so that's even easier.
Or if I don't want to deal with a second pilot then a CJ4+ or Phenom 300. But still, a Gulfstream is a Gulfstream.

I mean, if we’re set on single pilot it’s a PC-24 bought under an LLC with a leaseback contract to a 135 operator to offset cost and provide depreciation expense, plus a handful of planes ti fly recreationally, and then charter for flights longer than ~1500nm.
