For those of you who have kids, or are pretty frequently surrounded by them...

...what do you feel is present day media (books, music, film, tv, etc.) that is maybe, or likely, going to become "classic and timeless" for this generation like 20-30 years from now?
I know it's a really hard thing to identify/predict, but I'm curious whether anything your kids are taking in now are raising eyebrows for you, in a good way.
I'm not at all surrounded by young folks day to day, so I have zero sense of this at all, and am curious to learn!

Gravity Falls, Steven Universe
Taupenbeige@reddit
Dog Man. Dav Pilkey is an unmatched genius.
GloomyAsparagus7253@reddit
Dog Man is phenomenal, but after I read his Cat Kid Comic Club series to my son, I was even more impressed with Dav Pilkey.
mom_bombadill@reddit
Yes!! Petey’s redemption arc is one for the ages, it’s a better storyline than most stuff for adults!
Taupenbeige@reddit
Plus… accidentally high-fiving while holding poop!
honestrade@reddit
I’d add Captain Underpants too.
ReggaeForPresident@reddit
I've read most of his works with my son and I agree. It's good stuff, and has a positive message.
FoppyDidNothingWrong@reddit
Unfortunately they will be nostalgic about Dogman
Shabbadoo1015@reddit
Some really great and awesome choices already mentioned. Just based on the stuff (that isn’t YouTube related) that my kids consume, I absolutely agree Bluey is gonna hold up and still remain classic a decade or two from now.
Someone mentioned the Mickey Mouse shorts and to me, that’s a testament to just the character itself being timeless and classic. And yes, they are fantastically done.
This is gonna sound oddly specific or out there. But much like a lot of older Disney Channel original movies (High School Musical, Cheetah Girls) and series(Lizzie McGuire) remain classics to their generations, I think the Zombies movies are gonna be those. At least these first four. That franchise was not on my radar when it first came out back in 2018. But it was during the pandemic when Zombies 2 came out and my kids became addicted to it. It’s now a big part of our kids lives and regular viewing/listening as wel. But outside of our family, that franchise has a huge following. In the end, it’s really a timeless story of boy meets girl/beauty and the beast to the backdrop of some really catchy and well made music.
MonstersMamaX2@reddit
I just took my daughter to the Descendants/Zombies World Tour. My head regretted it the next day but honestly, it was so well done. They did songs from all 4 movies from both franchises. It was a fun night.
Shabbadoo1015@reddit
My kids were begging us to go to the Boston show. I wish we could have sprung for it. We’re fans of Descendants as well. I bet it was really fun. From all the clips we’ve seen, they look like they’re (the stars of both franchises) really look like they’re having fun too.

Bluey as far as TV shows
Frozen basically already is as far as movies goes
Depending on the age of the kid, Stranger Things.
garden__gate@reddit
Based on the little kids I know: Bluey.
jonthecpa@reddit
Bluey is just good TV. It deserves to stick around.
garden__gate@reddit
It’s so good!
tMoneyMoney@reddit
I’ll admit, there was an episode that made me tear up because it was geared toward parents and so emotionally good.
Camsmuscle@reddit
The baby race is the one that always sticks with me as my child is developmentally delayed.
jonthecpa@reddit
It’s all geared towards parents, really. Bandit is dadgoals.
The Sign came out when I was mulling a new job offer and it gutted me.
Novel_Towel6125@reddit
Seriously. The kids still love it because it's well-animated and has some good slapstick moments, but it's clear the show's not really for them. It's 100% for us.
jiyoungle@reddit
The Sign makes me really emotional. My kids also get really teary eyed from it. They don't fully understand everything about the episode but when the music is swelling and Bandit gets that phone call, it's just a perfectly executed scene.
Following up that episode with a short and sweet one about the cycle of life and grandchildren is the cherry on top.
WhoDatNinja30@reddit
Just one?
firesticks@reddit
Yeah I have about five off the top of my head.
-Disagreeable-@reddit
Tear up? Goodness. There are episodes that have made me weep. Just an incredible show. Love it.
jacksonmills@reddit
I feel like it almost always makes me emotional, Bluey sucker punches you with the feels sometimes
Usual-Role-9084@reddit
Bluey is fantastic. I can’t tell you how many times I’ll be watching with my kid, then he gets up and starts doing something else and all of a sudden I realize I’ve been sitting there watching Bluey by myself for the past hour lol.
Also worth mentioning that my son was speech delayed. And when he finally started talking….he had an Australian accent 🤣
geekgirlwww@reddit
I was getting Bluey clips on my algorithm and they had one where the Dad had to pretend to be a mom in labor and then they call the neighbor over to pretend to be the doctor.
I sent it to a friend who’s a Dad with “what is this show”….i get back “greatest show of all time”
jonthecpa@reddit
I found out about Bluey before my first son was born and watched it in anticipation.
FuckYouChristmas@reddit
The hungover episode is hilarious!
Careful-Use-4913@reddit
Ok y’all, I’m 46, my kids range in age from 19-2, and I’ve never seen Bluey. I guess I’m going to have to watch it now.
bikeonychus@reddit
My kid has been watching Bluey since it came out - she's 8 now, still watches it almost exclusively. Refuses to watch anything else.
I would say Bluey is this generation's Peppa Pig, but it feels like an insult to Bluey.
Quackoverride@reddit
Some of the kids in my 9 year old’s class insist Bluey is for babies. Kiddo and every single one of their friends - girls and boys - who come over for play dates would disagree.
They may be too old for Bluey T-shirts, but every single one of them loves watching it.
geekgirlwww@reddit
My friends son is 7 and still loves Paw Patrol. Which is super sweet and I hope he doesn’t get bullied for it. What sucked is even as a preschooler it was hard finding him Paw Patrol clothes because this kids been off the charts for height since he was a baby.
tMoneyMoney@reddit
Peppa Pig is solid, but the writing isn’t as smart and it doesn’t have as much heart as Bluey.
bikeonychus@reddit
To be fair, I'm just still mad at the Peppa Pig story where Mummy Pig was goaded by a fairground worker and 100% took the bait. Chilli would NEVER.
JollyJeanGiant83@reddit
It's their Mr Rogers.
pixelpheasant@reddit
YES!! Bluey is filling the shoes Fred Rogers left behind. It's been a few decades gap, nothing else comes close.
garden__gate@reddit
Yes!
msheehan418@reddit
Blues clues maybe? I watched that when it came out and I was like 15
geekgirlwww@reddit
In 20 years I’m going to be at a bar and the DJ is going to drop the Bluey theme and the young people are going to lose their shit
LoudAndCuddly@reddit
It’s a bit heavy on the men bashing for me personally. I wouldn’t let my sons watch it. The dad is portrayed as a bumbling idiot while mum is super woman who can do no wrong…. Bad messaging
WheelLeast1873@reddit
Lol are you even watching the same show?
Excellent-Goal4763@reddit
This dynamic can be found in loads of other shows, Bluey has tinges of it. Honestly, it’s a show about good parenting that adults can relate to and kids like to watch.
garden__gate@reddit
He’s a great dad. This is such an odd take.

Alright y'all, you remember the Christmas Swim episode of Bluey? It was Christmas, it was December, but they were celebrating by the pool because in December it's summer there!
💡
MotherofaPickle@reddit
This was the first thing I thought of. Bluey will never die.
Peanut083@reddit
My all-time favourite episode of Bluey is ‘Shaun’. Purely for this gem:
“He’s chasing the bin chicken!”
Gets me every time. 🤣
As an Australian, I have a weird fascination with bin chickens. Like, I know they look weird and the fact they sift through garbage looking for food is gross, but I’m also in awe of the behavioural adaptation in response to habitat loss. Also, they vocalise by honking. It sounds so messed up, but I like it all the same.
Jerkrollatex@reddit
Yep. Bluey is big. It's watchable and even entertaining for adults too. The parents are definitely all one of us. It's very clear that people our age are in the writers room.
Elevenyearstoomany@reddit
Bluey is literally the best! I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like it!

EmmerdoesNOTrepme@reddit
The only thing i'm not seeing listed so far, is Paw Patrol, for the little ones!
They're kind of this generation of kids' Care Bears.
fidgetypenguin123@reddit
That's true. It will be interesting to see the lasting impression of it long-term. My kid is now 15 but when he was little it was huge for him and it seems huge for a lot of little kids now too.
What keeps things going to different generations seems to be never stopping the brand so to speak. Care Bears were huge when we were kids but then new shows and books and toys of theirs has still been made since so it's been huge to new generations. That's what really keeps things going with each generation. Probably why other shows we knew as kids that stayed back then (ie He-man, Gummi Bears, etc) are only known to us mostly and now it's just a nostalgia thing for us. If the shows that are popular to kids now keep having different variations continuing into the future they'll still be popular going forward, otherwise it will just be nostalgia for this generation.
justonemom14@reddit
I agree, Care Bears is still going. My 18 year old kid wears a Care Bear t-shirt up the time.
scotttydosentknow@reddit
My kid is 6 and loves Pokémon also strangely enough Godzilla
fidgetypenguin123@reddit
Agree with that all as a parent of a now teen and also someone with nieces that are little.
In fact my niece just showed me a new Hello Kitty thing she got the other day and I couldn't help but think about how when I was her age (almost 40 yrs ago now, yikes) I was reading and watching Hello Kitty as well then, and had a stuffie of her. And then of course things like Mickey Mouse and all the classic Disney characters that were a part of our lives like they were to our parents when they were little and now the kids of today. Some things are just timeless.

tMoneyMoney@reddit
Ms. Rachel is cute but it’s really just mindless toddler in the same vein as Cocomelon and those other earworm singalong shows. Bluey is definitely more of a sophisticated timeless classic.

Well similarly, I spent countless hours as a kid playing Super Mario and Legend of Zelda and it’s actually been so wonderful watching my kids fall in love with those characters, 35+ years later. Timeless.

Today's media and popular culture doesn't really have space for "timeless" anything. The very nature of it all is, like, I don't know, transitive. I don't think we will even think in terms like that in a few years time.

AdDense7020@reddit
Bluey, Paw Patrol, K-Pop Demon Hunters, Ms. Rachael, and Pokémon-off the top of my head. I’m a preschool teacher and these are the things the kids are talking about every day.
fidgetypenguin123@reddit
Since you mentioned kids of all ages I think things like Minecraft Roblox and Fortnite are on that list. They've been popular for a long time now and still are huge in the life of the now teens that have been playing it since they were younger. And even those in their 20s now so pretty much all of Gen Z and now into Alpha.
I think all the animated series others have mentioned could be as well, but it will be interesting to see if those shows stand the test of time and transcend generations such as Mickey Mouse or Care Bears or Hello Kitty or Sesame Street or if they'll end up being just nostalgia classics to them that only their generation (give or take a bit) will remember. We watched lots of kids shows growing up but some ended and that was it so we only have our memories and experiences as kids that watched them. And then some never really ended with all the new iterations of those shows made over the years that our kids watch now. Curious to see what will happen with the animated shows now like Paw Patrol, Bluey, etc, if they stop and will just be memories and nostalgia for these kids in the future or they continue and will live on through future generations.

She also loves little cartoon shorts channels like Dr. Barry Tiger or these goofy cartoon skeletons. And she’ll watch videos of other people playing with toys.
I feel like Gen alpha will have far fewer shared pop culture memories due to the proliferation of independent media.
FoppyDidNothingWrong@reddit
Minecraft, Mario, Sonic, Dogman, and a slew of Youtube channels depending upon their interests. When a real Alpha reddit exists they will talk about youtube channels and youtubers like we talk about musicians and tv shows.
I'm surprised how quickly Baby Shark came and went. Who knows if that will be remembered.

Once you get over the fact that it's now a puppet show instead of a show with some puppets in it, Sesame Street continues to do good work.
Streaming seems to have changed things. My 4 year old has taken a liking to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles... but she's bouncing back and forth between the 1987 and 2012 versions. She's also binging Mickey Mouse Club House from 2006. And also the new episodes that came out just recently... I guess she wasn't the only one watching the show.
(Oh, and put me down for another vote for Bluey).
