„Nintendos greed could infect the tech industry „ vs „ltt‘s lies and baheviour could damage the tech community and the trust in us“
Pick your poison.
greiton@reddit
what lies? the typos on a few graphs?
Logical-Database4510@reddit
Switch 1 pulled the same horseshit, so I'm far from surprised.
Nintendo gonna Nintendo 🤷♂️
Noteagro@reddit
Just saying the Switch 1’s USB-C cable also doesn’t work with a bunch of devices if let’s say you forget just a normal USB-C cable for any other normal device.
Won’t charge other console’s controllers (at least not Xbox 1 elites), won’t charge my or my GF’s Bluetooth speakers, won’t charge a phone, won’t charge my IEMs’ case, and won’t charge any of the 4 wireless mice (I have been WFH and have a mouse for personal and work PCs) my GF or I have had in the past like 7 years.
The only thing I have found it will charge/work with is my Bluetooth noise cancelling headphones. Dunno why that, but nothing else will work with it.
hardrockfoo@reddit
It charged everything I plugged into it. Including my laptop
RedditNotFreeSpeech@reddit
Let's remember there were a few interactions. May be interesting to compare model numbers o. The dock that the charger came with.
Imaginary-Worker4407@reddit
I have a launch switch and it has charged every device I've have plugged it to.
Irrc the actual issue was the switch itself refusing to charge (and even bricking itself) with other chargers.
el_f3n1x187@reddit
I got the 9 in 1 Ugreen dock for the Steamdeck and it works with the switch 1, only bug I get is it does not wake up the switch if its sleep and connected and I use the joycons to turn it on
Noteagro@reddit
Odd, mine doesn’t work with anything but the headphones I listed earlier.
DependentAnywhere135@reddit
This is nonsense the switch charging cable will charge things just fine.
Whirblewind@reddit
Why are we abusing English to make our point? The Switch charging cable will charge SOME things fine, but not everything. It is not nonsense, miss us with that apologism. It IS selective depending on the device, that's objective fact.
R4NG00NIES@reddit
Okay inform us what USB-C device it’s not charging. Instead of crying and providing an ad-hominem, enlighten us.
RemiliaFGC@reddit
nintendos GREED is KILLING the industry because the charging cable is slightly different. i am so fucking outraged right now. im so fucking mad. how can i play mario kart like this. this is bullshit.
Madeiran@reddit
It's been 24 hours. You haven't named a single device. We're waiting.
Madeiran@reddit
So what exactly are the things it won’t charge?
DependentAnywhere135@reddit
Yeah devices without usb c sure.
glytxh@reddit
Mine literally charges my steam deck and MacBook on occasion.
R4NG00NIES@reddit
It’s charged everything I’ve plugged it into.
number8888@reddit
Used my cable to charge other stuff and haven’t encounter any issue at all. Been using it with chromebooks, tablets, Apple phones, android phones, steam decks, dual sense, etc. It’s a nice cable since it’s long but not stiff.
BWFTW@reddit
Ya I remember my friend used their switch charger for the m series Macbook Pro for a week after their apple charger broke.
Noteagro@reddit
That is really odd, I think I must not have the same as others as you described yours as long yet not stiff. Mine is not that long imo, and fairly stiff compared to many other cables I have.
dustarma@reddit
My Switch Lite charger can charge everything USB-C I have except for my 8bitdo controller, my phones top up at 7W as I assume they don't support charging at 15V, and my laptops top up at 33W.
fullsaildan@reddit
I use it with lots of devices, but I do notice it can randomly be finicky. Sometimes it gets “stuck” in a mode where it won’t charge anything. I suspect it’s a handshake issue where the charger can’t identify a valid voltage so it goes to its lowest mode. Usually unplugging it from the wall and the device, leaving it sit for a bit, then plugging into the wall and then finally a device, will allow it to charge again.
Noteagro@reddit
Interesting, I will have to try that. With everyone telling me I am wrong I thought I was going crazy, but if that is the case then that could explain it.
VampiroMedicado@reddit
I charge my iPhone 15 with it lol
SpikeX@reddit
You want to charge stuff with your Switch 1? Do you realize how terrible the battery life is to begin with?
HuntKey2603@reddit
He meant with the cable. But if he wanted to charge stuff with his Switch, he should be able to do whatever he wants with his device, yes.
Dudeonyx@reddit
Why would you think that they want to charge stuff with their switch?
They referred to only the cable
Exciting-Ad-5705@reddit
The switch 1 charger not the console itself
Proud_Tie@reddit
with the cable from the switch 1, not the device itself.
Quatro_Leches@reddit
Their fans are rabid and will defend and reward them for their greed
Madeiran@reddit
Their fans are primarily regular people that do not give a fuck about any of this.
Neosantana@reddit
These aren't their fans, these are the majority of their users. Their actual fans are downright unhinged.
puffz0r@reddit
They're kind of like the circa-2000s apple fans that paid $1000 for a monitor stand
Exist50@reddit
That was in 2019.
puffz0r@reddit
holy shit my perception of time is absolutely destroyed, I could've sworn it was late 2000s
Quatro_Leches@reddit
makes sense how they are by far the only fan base that bullies review sites if they ever give a negative review
jth1011@reddit
I agree the Nintendo consumer base lets the company get away with more than most in the video game/tech space, but be serious.
Stahlreck@reddit
That's kinda the problem and isn't Nintendo exclusive.
Qpang007@reddit
I'm a fan of their games and I like the handheld console. However, I will not defend their actions against consumers and the Right to Repair movement.
taxiscooter@reddit
Blaming 1 for its sins feels a little anachronistic. Yes, DP Alt standards came out a few years before, but the first laptops that had DP Alt also came out in 2017. Considering that Switch 1 was basically found in nVidia's garbage bin, it's reasonable for it to be a weird nonstandard thing. I'm pretty sure it was my first USB-C device too.
2's shenanigans are a lot weirder and annoying.
DexRogue@reddit
Exactly. I am done buying Nintendo products. Always underpowered, always overpriced, and they nickel and dime you for everything.
nWhm99@reddit
Overpriced? Nintendo devices have been significantly cheaper than its competitors for generations.
DexRogue@reddit
You mean the game that's been out for two years but is still full price is not overpriced? Asking new retail prices for games that are remade from different nintendo consoles isn't overpriced?
nWhm99@reddit
Is this a joke? Games not going on sale means they’re overpriced?
R4NG00NIES@reddit
Um yes. Where tf have you been the past 30 years years?
Tax_Life@reddit
If the alternative is Steam where most games are 60-90% off within 2 years then yes, it's overpriced. You also have to pay for their lacklustre online service.
buster089@reddit
Yes, do you remember the price of this Super Mario collection that was basically just emulated without notable improvements that was 60€ or even more. Or almost all pokemon games for switch, or Mario kart for switch 1 that was basically the same game as the wiiu version?
Also, not only the games are overpriced, basically every piece of hardware for switch 1 & 2 (90€ dock anyone, joy cons with planned obsolescence) or Nintendo switch online subscription, especially since it's the only official way to backup save games (and not even for all games)
Nintendo stuff is in most cases overpriced, sometimes even outrageously
kikimaru024@reddit
I recently bought a used DSi XL and am after finding out every stylus for every DS system is slightly different...
Specialist-Hat167@reddit
Why is this upvoted?
Why is it okay for Nintendo to behave like this and we have to “accept” it? Yet if we swap Nintendo with Apple here and apply the same logic u would have been downvoted to oblivion and everyone would be cursing apple.
Double standards of this sub is wild.
i_max2k2@reddit
I was on the fence till the OLED switch came out, I’m not buying a Switch 2 anytime soon. Way too much enshitification with their hardware and their video content take downs.
lowlymarine@reddit
Ah Linus, gotta get that dig at Apple in there as if they aren't the gold standard of USB-C compliance. Every device, charger, and cable they sell complies perfectly with USB-PD standards. In Macs that have both Thunderbolt and USB-C ports, they are clearly labeled next to the port, and even the non-THunderbolt ports still support power and display out. In fact, every Mac, iPad, and iPhone with a USB-C port implements every part of the standard (data, display, power) on every port. Compare this to the situation in the PC ecosystem, where the absolute best case scenario is getting a detailed diagram of what ports support what features to what extent and with lesser OEMs it's basically plug-and-pray.
I also think it's funny that early on he uses the PS5 as an example of "consoles better conforming to industry standards", because while the M.2 slot instead of proprietary storage expansion is laudable, the PSVR2 does this exact same crap with USB-C. It's a single cable solution only with the PS5, but needs a proprietary breakout box to work on a PC because it doesn't implement DP alt mode normally.
DVSBSTD@reddit
Ah yes, Apple, the company that had to be forced through legislation to finally put USB on their phones.
Stingray88@reddit
It’s both appropriate to give Apple credit for their adoption of USB C in Macs, and to criticize them for their late adoption in iPhones.
Apple does a lot of shitty stuff, but they also do some great shit now and then. Don’t paint any company with too broad of a brush.
DVSBSTD@reddit
This whole thread specifically tho is about proprietary shenanigans and the parent comment tries to whitewash this through one good thing Apple did.
Apple is the very epitome of walled gardens. Just look at all their childish reactions to EU legislations.
I guess doing some great shit now and then outweighs doing a lot of shitty stuff?
VenditatioDelendaEst@reddit
I think Apple does proprietary shenanigans exactly when they intend to. Nintendo, like the Raspberry Pi foundation, just fucks up their USB implementation every time through sheer incompetence.
Stingray88@reddit
Again, it is perfectly valid to point out when a company does something right, just as it is to point out when they do something wrong. It's not whitewashing to give praise where it's due.
What was the 2nd half of the paragraph you quoted?
Bolded for emphasis.
Good doesn't absolve the bad, nor does bad eliminate the good. Both good and bad can be acknowledged. Don't paint any company with too broad of a brush applies both ways.
DVSBSTD@reddit
You're sounding hella centrist. By your logic nobody is allowed to criticise a company without immediately also praising them.
The OP took issue with Linus putting valid criticism on Apple and tried to argue the criticism is invalid thanks to one good thing they also did.
Stingray88@reddit
...what?
I literally never said or suggested that at all. Not even remotely. I'm simply saying it is OK to praise a company when they do something good, just as it is OK to criticize them when they do something bad. Doing something good doesn't absolve the bad either... all companies should strive to only doing good. No one is above critique.
My entire point for originally replying to you is that you guys were going tit-for-tat on good/bad about Apple... and I literally said you were both right.
That was not their point, and not what they said. You are reading both theirs and my comments from too much of an absolute perspective, and reading things that aren't there.
DVSBSTD@reddit
Thanks for adding literally nothing to the conversation.
HulksInvinciblePants@reddit
Ah yes, Apple, one of the formative members in developing USB-C and the first to bring consumers omni-directional data cables years before USB-C’s launch.
DVSBSTD@reddit
Proprietary omni-directional data cable with terrible speeds compared to USB-C, even years after USB-C's launch.
FTFY.
HulksInvinciblePants@reddit
Dog it came out in 2012 and offered the convenience long before the C standard (which again they were a part of) became common. C utilized many of lightning features.
Are you also whining about USB-A still existing?
DVSBSTD@reddit
Not sure why you're trying to defend Apple so hard, kinda weird tbh.
You're conveniently ignoring the part where the cable is proprietary and requires licensing fees. Even now, if Apple is such a great USB-C champion then how come USB 3 speeds are limited to pro models while on base models you're stuck with USB 2?
HulksInvinciblePants@reddit
I’m not defending Apple. I just hate uneducated Apple hate boners. Especially when they spew shit completely ignorant of the history.
USB-C would not exist were it not for Lightning and trying to claim they were ever meant to compete for the long-term, “jack of all trades” solution is nonsense.
dahauns@reddit
Glasshouse, meet stones...
cstar1996@reddit
The only thing people are “conveniently ignoring” is that lightning was the best cable on release because USB-C didn’t exist.
DVSBSTD@reddit
Subjective. USB 2.0 existed and I could use the cable with plenty other devices.
cstar1996@reddit
What USB-2 port was better than lightning when lightning released?
DVSBSTD@reddit
What non-Apple device could I use with the lightning cable? That I had to carry around just for the iphone.
cstar1996@reddit
That doesn’t answer the question. What USB port at the time was better than Lightning when it released?
And what other devices were you carrying around charging cables for?
DVSBSTD@reddit
The one that was on all devices, yknow, the universal one.
cstar1996@reddit
Which USB port? Why is that so hard to answer? USB-A certainly wouldn’t work, are you pushing USB-B ports as better than Lightning?
lowlymarine@reddit
Imagine being so blinded by hatred of Apple you try to argue Micro-B was a good connector.
DVSBSTD@reddit
I didn't say micro-b was good. But lightning had a good connector and worse everything else.
JQuilty@reddit
So why did they keep Lightning around until the EU forced USB-C? Surely it had absolutely nothing to do with the no effort money they got to extort from accessory makers or the control they got.
dahauns@reddit
To be fair, technically it's not proprietary - it's the Virtualink standard and works just fine with GPUs with Virtualink inputs or 3rd party virtualink boxes (BizLink/Varjo). It's just that the standard never really took off, the last (only?) cards with it were AFAIK Turing-based and i think no 3rd party sells boxes anymore.
And at least at the time, the big difference to normal dp alt mode was the support of 4-lane hbr3 combined with USB 3.1.
HuntKey2603@reddit
If you ever need a definition of "the trees don't let you see the forest" refer to this post.
yabucek@reddit
Shouldn't really surprise anyone, they've been staunchly anti-consumer as far back as I can remember. Anytime consoles are being discussed and people praise "good guy Nintendo" for whatever reason, I die a little on the inside.
Besides shit like this I really resent them for holding some amazing IP hostage on their woefully inadequate hardware. For example Palworld showed a sliver of the potential for the amazing Pokemon games we could have if this company got its head out of its ass, but no, best they can do is something that looks like an intern made with Unity in a week.
Just like many others I grew up with Nintendo, but I'll flush my money down a toilet before I spend it with them.
shinohose@reddit
Nintendo don't publish or develop pokemon. TPC holds the ownership of pokemon since 2001 and publish the games with gf developing. nintendo only relationship is distribution of pokemon, they stopped publishing and funding it after 2nd gen.
yabucek@reddit
Nintendo is a 1/3 shareholder of TPC... if there was a will to make a good Pokemon game from their side, they could make it happen.
shinohose@reddit
not really, joint ventures dont work like that. shareholder don't command the company, they just are part of the board.
Gippy_@reddit
I haven't completed a Pokémon game since Black/White (2010) because every damn game is the exact same and doesn't offer any challenging gameplay. It's now nearly 30 years and you can still "solo" the game (in quotes due to requiring TM/HM slaves) with your starter Pokémon.
Nintendo intentionally doesn't change much of the formula because their logic is that new kids keep entering the playerbase, and they want every game to act like it's a good first choice.
Pyrolistical@reddit
usb consortium can fix this with a spec. they should say implementers shall not reimplement existing usb features.
IE. since display over usb-c is already an existing spec, vendors are not allowed to reimplement it a non-standard way.
and for those of you who say, "but display over usb-c isn't a spec", then usb consortium can fix that too! there is clearly a defacto spec that everybody else is using.
261846@reddit
Oh my fucking god not another USB spec 😭
pmjm@reddit
Then they will create a proprietary port and we will all pay more for it.
Qpang007@reddit
They can, but they can't sell the product in the EU because the forcing of USB-C.
pmjm@reddit
That rule only applies to smartphones, tablets and laptops, and only for charging ports.
FollowingFeisty5321@reddit
It's only charging, but it definitely applies to the Nintendo Switch.
https://commission.europa.eu/news-and-media/news/eu-common-charger-rules-power-all-your-devices-single-charger-2024-12-28_en
pmjm@reddit
Oh good catch! Thanks for that. The Switch 2 does have a USB-C charging port at the top, the port in question is only for video output. So they could indeed use a proprietary one.
FollowingFeisty5321@reddit
Ooof well hopefully the EU cracks down on this!
Plank_With_A_Nail_In@reddit
They haven't actually done anything wrong though. Third party docs can replicate this handshake.
FollowingFeisty5321@reddit
Yeah but that means some docks in the future might achieve compatibility, and it rules out the millions of existing USB-C docks, contributing to e-waste.
I think it's pretty important to prevent this propagating to other manufacturers too, otherwise we'll have proprietary built on top of USB-C. There's already been a few cases of that in recent years with eGPUs like the Asus ROG XG Mobile port - which is already obsolete.
Pyrolistical@reddit
That’s still better. People can shame Nintendo for it. Right now they can have it both ways
SilentHuntah@reddit
That's the problem, those consortium created standards aren't really legally binding. You need something like what EU did with Apple when they forced USB-C support.
jigsaw1024@reddit
They are legally binding through a contract. In order to display USB logo they must agree to terms that include compatibility with the spec. It's how the consortia enforces the spec.
Saying that there is a lot of room to go off spec. We saw that with power delivery before the official PD spec was released.
Plank_With_A_Nail_In@reddit
It is in spec, its also the switch 2 so no one is looking at the box for the USB logo lol.
I checked and the switch 2 box has no USB logo's on it.
SilentHuntah@reddit
Isn't USB-C as a spec still fragmented and all over the place as it is? Qualcomm and other device makers come up with their own charging standards. It's like herding cats.
Good luck changing the terms to force Nintendo to play nice.
dabisnit@reddit
I’ve had a USB Type C phone for 9 years at this point. If they can’t figure it out by now, it is embarrassing
InternetD_90s@reddit
In everyday business: no one cares. A massive chunk of USB hardware sold is faulty in one way or another by not respecting specs (doesn't mean it can't work, there is just no guarantee). Hence why if your business depends on it you need to start to test your gear and wares to not get headaches on the job (well if you give a damn anyway).
Specs and contracts are not enough. I'm no lawyer but for me it touches the region of fraud and bad faith, hence why we need legislations especially for tech. In the issue here it would be to forbid generally removing/replacing common standards with proprietary bullcrap without a good fucking reason.
Just look around the birth of the PC: back then computers had a lot of different formats, standards and so on. Hell even networks and the Internet were a shithouse at the beginning because everyone made their own soup. I think we all can agree that we all do not want to go back just because some greedy corporations throw away decades of global cooperation for common standards.
As a European: Mandatory USB-C in the EU is a good start, but we really shouldn't stop there.
arstarsta@reddit
Can't you just follow an older spec? Like display a USB 3.0 logo while the new spec would be in USB 3.3.
Dakhil@reddit
The funny thing is that the EU does allow for proprietary charging standards to be incorporated as long as the full functionality of USB PD is maintained.
And the Nintendo Switch 2's dock itself is not the issue since handheld PCs (Lenovo Legion Go S, Steam Deck) can connect without issues specific to the Nintendo Switch 2's dock. (The reason why the Lenovo Legion Go S doesn't charge when connected to the Nintendo Switch 2's dock is because the Lenovo Legion Go S requires a minimum of 20 V for charging whereas the Nintendo Switch 2's dock uses 15 V for TV mode output.)
SilentHuntah@reddit
That makes sense now that you point that ou.t
Strazdas1@reddit
When you need USB consortium to fix something you already lost the battle.
alelo@reddit
„apple has a sinilar rule“ youtubes picture in picture would like to have a word with you - iOS feature blocked behind premium sub
goldcakes@reddit
Google pays Apple tens of billions per year, they get a pass.
Plank_With_A_Nail_In@reddit
Linux doesn't work with the USB C wifi dongle I bought but Windows does....should I call the police?
tux-lpi@reddit
This is the sort of crap that the EU likes to make illegal. I know it's normal for companies in other regions to be aggressively anti-consumer, but no one benefits from this. If we're going to have USB everywhere, make them actually work with each other.
Leisure_suit_guy@reddit
This is not why they do it, people forgets that Nintendo sees consoles as toys, not a computers, they're not supposed to be compatible with computer peripherals and protocols.
But at the same time, there is a thriving market of third party Nintendo controller because they're not as greedy as Microsoft and Sony, they didn't lock down their wireless protocols.
They're pro consumer to a fault. I didn't buy their Switch pro controller because there are so many alternatives on the market even with more function and often at half the price or even less.
You can't do that with Sony and Microsoft: you have to pay 70 dollars for a controller that is basically the same since the Xbox one (and of terrible quality).
And in case if you need more functions, Sony is gonna make you pay almost half the price of a PS5 for a Pro controller (which is insane).
This is what greed looks like.
repocin@reddit
Then why do they support generic USB webcams and mice instead of forcing everyone to use their hardware and nothing else? You can't just pull that argument out when it's convenient.
Vb_33@reddit
R games is that way ---> /r/games
arthurno1@reddit
Apple obviously benefited. If you bought an Apple computer back in time, you had to buy almost everything else Apple.
skrillex_sk2@reddit
Switch is shit. Nintendo is a horrible company. I've never understood why are their games and consoles so popular.
VampiroMedicado@reddit
Because they make good games, their worst game you can think of is better than the industry standard.
Exist50@reddit
You seen modern Pokemon?
VampiroMedicado@reddit
Yeah, technical issues doesn't instantly make videogame bad lol
Exist50@reddit
It can be sufficient by itself. And not like the only issues are technical.
Strazdas1@reddit
they made mid games that are overvalued by the less experienced.
someguy50@reddit
Because they make great games that are widely loved and generally critically acclaimed
ampr1998@reddit
Not surprising coming from Nintendo tbh, Switch 1 also had issues with 3rd party docks. On the other hand I don't think most people care, of all the people I know who own a Switch 1 not a single one has a 3rd party dock, they all just carry the one included.
Exist50@reddit
The ability to use a generic USB C hub with the Switch 1 is very handy, especially for travel.
augustocdias@reddit
I love Nintendo products but I hate Nintendo company. They are so anti consumers.
Vb_33@reddit
Keep giving them money, that'll show em.
DearChickPeas@reddit
"oh no, S2 is too expensive, games are too expensive"
*Buys one anyway*
NoAirBanding@reddit
They hate you/us too so it works out
RHINO_Mk_II@reddit
If you buy their products you are enabling them to continue being the company they are.
kwirky88@reddit
How can both of those of statements be true? The company makes the products what they are.
Calimariae@reddit
Shitty business practices. Amazing games.
Stingray88@reddit
A company does a whole lot more than just make products. A company can make excellent products with no flaws, and then treat their workers poorly, or abuse their market dominance with anti-competitive behavior. That’s how one can love a company’s products while still hating them as a company.
augustocdias@reddit
Exactly my feelings towards Nintendo
2pt_perversion@reddit
Really just the games for me. Even if Nintendo wasn't so evil, if there was no such thing as platform exclusives I don't think I'd have bought any hardware from them in the past 20 years.
theludeguy@reddit
they dont care unless it affects their bottom line, Nintendo is just like any other company, profits 1st, everything else second. I like to think that most of the anti-consumer practices that Nintendo has normalized would not be present if Iwata and Reggie were heading the company. unfortunately we have this shit to deal with and Bowser is not helping. RIP Iwata
Green_Struggle_1815@reddit
please. iwata was the same trash. good thing he's in the ground. the company has been anti consumer where they could. region locking started with the nintendo dsi.
reggie only worked for the us subsidiary. No idea how much influence they have.
BlobTheOriginal@reddit
Reggie had the power to influence Nintendo to make certain decisions - like including Wii Sports with the Wii. He was also charismatic and popular with fans.
Iwata was responsible for Nintendo's unique feeling. I don't think it's much coincidence that the Switch store didn't include music after his death - not to mention the switch UI being completely non-inspired business look.
Sure they both prob made questionable decisions but I believe they are who made Nintendo Nintendo.
shinohose@reddit
One decision out of thousands. And the times he couldn't do anything and even had to defend it with pr talks to the point it became a joke between fans?
it literally is a coincidence. Genyo Takeda retired after 2015 and Nintendo had restructuring of hardware leadership and software leadership. yall link everything to iwata when half of the things you mention come from people below him
No, they weren't. It's insane that I keep reading this bullshit in internet. The people who made nintendo nintendo are the developers, not executives. And if you have to mention an executive it's Hiroshi Yamauchi putting nintendo in the gaming market and only for that
BlobTheOriginal@reddit
Obviously a director of a movie doesn't make the whole movie but they're the ones where all the responsibility rests - the final decision. Of course Iwata wasn't some God lol but he had the final say and people have a fond memory of that time.
While the constant praise of Iwata is weird, so is the hate.
shinohose@reddit
there is no hate from me, just correction on the revisionism over him
and the "director" would be the hardware producer and director, the software producer and director for those consoles and so on, and none would be iwata. Thats the problem, yall put executives as if they were hands on. iwata was a developer but only on his time at hal, not when he was president of nintendo. same for reggie who never was a developer.
deep1986@reddit
Jesus, relax
theludeguy@reddit
Never said the guy was perfect. But I'd rather have the Nintendo Iwata and Reggie pushed for.
shinohose@reddit
Both of them literally had multiple anti consumer practices including region lock.
This revisionism of nintendo past is disgusting.
Lucie-Goosey@reddit
Lots of company's have integrity because there's a lot of people with integrity. But there's also definitely a lot of people that don't.
Ratiofarming@reddit
Nintendo gonna Nintendo. It won't change unless it's outlawed. The regular users don't know or care, thus Nintendo sells the Switch 2 just about as fast as they can make it.
spacerays86@reddit
Didn't stop 7 million worldwide buyers. The more people know the better.
FUPA_MASTER_@reddit
Bold of you to assume people knowing would make a difference.
ThankGodImBipolar@reddit
I bought a Switch 2 fully expecting that it would be the most locked down and backwards piece of tech that I own. Unfortunately, I can’t play Mario Kart anywhere else.
RHINO_Mk_II@reddit
Emulation. Assuming you are savvy enough to set it up.
Azure-April@reddit
Please do tell us how you are emulating Mario Kart World.
RHINO_Mk_II@reddit
OP didn't say World, but I'll get back to you in a year or two.
Azure-April@reddit
Who on the planet earth bought a Switch 2 to play MK8. What you said is dumb and we all know it
RHINO_Mk_II@reddit
Literally the guy I replied to in this other comment a few days ago. Where's your argument now bud?
ThankGodImBipolar@reddit
MK8D doesn’t run at 60FPS with 4 players on the Switch 2 lol (Nintendo would never)
ThankGodImBipolar@reddit
I have MK8D on my Steam Deck right now, but I can’t guarantee that it’ll work flawlessly every time guests are over, or that my partner will want to use it.
Olde94@reddit
I know. I even know of the issues with first gen switch 1 and how many got bricked using usb-c cables without a pull-down resistor.
I bought 3rd party dock and knew absolutely why i paid for a genki and not a generic amazon dock.
I also got a switch 2 last month. I hate this practice, but it’s not stopping me from enjoying amazing games
127-0-0-1_1@reddit
There's already 3rd party docks. LTT even mentions one. I have no doubt that they'll all figure out the protocol in a month or two.
Olde94@reddit
I’m in no hurry. I’ll wait a bit to make sure Nintendo doesn’t pull a wierd one and changes something, but I’ll absolutely keep an eye out
Whirblewind@reddit
It will make a difference. A difference doesn't mean the number that satisfies any given apologist when they run defense for the device on reddit, but it's disingenuous to imply nobody changed their mind.
FUPA_MASTER_@reddit
Sorry. I will re-write my original comment to satisfy you.
"Bold of you assume people knowing will make any appreciable difference in the number of Nintendo Switch 2™ sales. The number of individual people who care about the Nintendo Switch 2™ having a non-standardized feature-set for the Universal Serial Bus type-C (USB C) interface is infinitesimally small. So small, infact, that you could even state that the number of Nintendo Switch 2™ sales would make no difference wheather or not consumers knew of such a disappointing descision made by Nintendo®."
I apologize for my previous lack of un-specific wording. I will make sure to be 100% clear for you in the future. It was not my intention to mis-lead anybody about the Nintendo Switch 2™ sales figures. I hope this comment has helped to clarify the situation.
rohmish@reddit
Most people don't care unless they actually need to use that feature. They'll try using it with a random dock/cable/tv etc. blame the dock or cable since that makes more sense to them and then just buy the official thing.

How many people do you think would honestly care about the usb c compatibility of the switch dock?
BighatNucase@reddit
I don't believe the people getting angry about it (LTT included) even give a shit.
Axisl@reddit
The device they used to read the communication between the switch and dock was pretty cool.
starburstases@reddit
Looks like a Cypress EZ-PD Protocol Analyzer.
Sweet-Sale-7303@reddit
Isn't usb-c the connector and not the standard?
UsernameAvaylable@reddit
Also, the USB standard has a couple line pairs in the usb-c connector as spare to use as however you want. Thunderbolt for example uses them for displayport connections.
gomurifle@reddit
So what's wrong with this for a Nintendo system?! Y'all already know what Nintendo has been like this since inception. If you want an more open system don't buy from Nintendo.
Historical_Bread3423@reddit
This guy does too much meth.
LividLife5541@reddit
It won't unless Apple does it. Apple is a trendsetter. Nintendo is not.
Aggravating_Law_1335@reddit
ltt is total garbage who tf still watching this idiot
Sparkmovement@reddit
Love the wait for the next gen yuzu comment.
Stefen_007@reddit
Another bad thing: some first party games won't even Cloud save even with the overpriced subscription. Animal crossing is one of those titles. If your switch brakes you can say your beloved island goodbye. I think splatoon 2 is also like that
el_f3n1x187@reddit
If you keep buying their shit, yes it will
ArmokTheSupreme@reddit
I needed to hear this information, but his voice/performance/youtube energy is so fucking insufferable.
Imaginary-Falcon-713@reddit
I see Linus, I downvote
fifty_four@reddit
This one, at least, has beautiful irony.
Zeta_Crossfire@reddit
I'm a small fish in a big pond but I'm skipping the switch 2 as long as the emulators are still around in the future.
Jaislight@reddit
If you buy Nintendo products you expect this stuff.
random-user-420@reddit
Time for the yearly LTT trashing on Nintendo video. The best videos they make are the ones for entertainment like scrapyard wars, his “smart home” improvements, and employee tech upgrades; he should just stick to those
Bugisoft_84@reddit
This crybaby is always desperate to get attention 🤣
DefactoAtheist@reddit
Lol @ Linus pontificating about insidious greed ruining something.
Exciting-Ad-5705@reddit
He's been careless but not actively anti consumer
greiton@reddit
He's actually super proconsumer with his own merch policies.
HuntKey2603@reddit
Wouldn't be r /hardware if there weren't at least one comment shitting itself at the mere thought of Linus
AnxiousJedi@reddit
'Could' infect the tech industry? I'm surprised when tech companies don't do shitty things like this. This is how business has been done for years.
constantlymat@reddit
Though the market has matured to such a degree that sabotaging your own USB connectivity is worse for your own bottom-line. That's one of the big reasons why USB-C won and manufacturers rallied behind it. It saves them money.
A company really has to be uniquely positioned in their niche of the market to be able to pull off such a BS move.
