I'm convinced some of us are the way that we are because we listened to this album when we were way too young

Literally made his career by stealing Bill Hicks’ act
echomanagement@reddit
I liked Leary in HS, and discovered Hicks in college. Leary's crime isn't that he's impersonatong Hicks, it's that he's doing it so poorly.
amayain@reddit
I'll be the one to disagree a bit. I definitely agree that he stole Hicks' act, and it's not that I think Leary did it better or anything, but Leary just did the act in different manner (i.e., less subversive or underground) that I don't think it was necessarily worse. It was just different. It's kinda like when a musician covers a great song and they add their twist to it and, although it's not as good as the original, it's still compelling and you want to hear that cover from time to time too.
SkinnyGetLucky@reddit
Leary is more… unbridled cantankerousness
zoominzacks@reddit
I’m in the boat with you on this one. Leary just resonated with me more. I should give Bill’s stuff another run now that I’m older and calmer. Leary may have been more my style because I was a lot angrier then.
Holiday-Tradition343@reddit
Hicks himself even said he liked Leary’s work, but he liked it even better when he (Hicks) was doing it.
surlysquirrelly@reddit
Sick burn by Hicks
BigManWAGun@reddit
Leary delivered it well, but once you discover Hicks it pales in comparison.
Creepshowx@reddit
I remember someone said this album should have been called "Dead Men Can't Sue."
dka2012@reddit
There was a joke that said. Why does everyone know Dennis Leary and not Bill Hicks? Because there’s no cure for cancer.
tjb4040@reddit
I always heard, why did Dennis Leary become famous and Bill Hick’s didn’t? Cause there’s no cure for cancer
Jifeeb@reddit
Nice. 10/10

And he stole the "I'm an asshole" bit from Louis CK.
jstnpotthoff@reddit
I came to say that others of us are so fucked up because we listened to original too damn early.
DecoyOctorock@reddit
He stole the Asshole song from Louis CK too.
Brilliant_Ad_6637@reddit
Hicks caught cancer just to see if Learey would too
_shaftpunk@reddit
Everyone always says that, but I actually like both. Different vibes to me.
Noname_Maddox@reddit
Denis Leary is a great comedian. A great actor and even better person. Fuck the haters
mnfimo@reddit
I dunno, I laughed really hard at this set and I don’t know or care who bill hicks is. He may have stolen it from him but it’s damn funny,
Before you all massacre me, I’m not into stand up comedy aside from the biggest names, and that’s my point

Kinison in Back to School is one of my favorite scenes in that movie. Others include the Kurt Vonnegut cameo and Oingo Boingo performance.
I think I am going to watch Back to School again…

Leary just cleaned up Bills routine and by cleaned up I mean got rid of all the anti government stuff that was too cutting
Final-Fun8500@reddit
Cleaned it up? Did he keep goat boy?
myfrigginagates@reddit
Yeah, Hicks was similar to Carlin in that they were Philosopher/Comedians. My favorite was when he asked if anyone who worked in marketing in the audience, people would raise their hands and Hicks would say "Go kill yourself". I loved it cuz of course I worked in marketing. lol.
GoatBoy1985@reddit
Why is this so low down
TheUnderDogma@reddit
Dennis Leary stole Bill Hicks act as Bill was dying from pancreatic cancer. Dennis Leary is an insignificant talentless hack and a fraud. The only reason Dennis ever gained relevance was through Bill Hicks material, which he POORLY delivered in comparison.
Longjumping-Spare870@reddit
You may be right, but I thought Leary’s delivery was why it’s funny, obnoxious but funny. I have not listened to Bill Hicks but No Cure For Cancer changed my young brain.

I want to add Spaceballs to this list. I rewatched it for the first time in 20ish years and was surprised to hear the amount of casual swearing in that movie. amayain@reddit
Early Foxworthy was funny as hell and I know it isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea, but I also think a lot of people were being snooty by pretending it wasn't funny.

I understand how the “you might be a redneck if…” thing got played out. It was huge at the time. But the album is a lot more than just those jokes and they still make me laugh today.

This and Sandler's They're All Gonna Laugh At You coming out at the same time was unreal for kids born around 1980. I remember the Parental Advisory sticker and my mom saying "as long as I don't hear it, it's fine..."
thelonghauls@reddit
I met him in Seattle once. Not met him. Approached him. Put out my hand and he took it and I told him that an hour after my mom had passed away of cancer in ‘99 I was driving home with my little brother who was 11 and out this record on. He started laughing. And laughing. And laughing. Our mom was probably still warm. Comedy is a hell of a drug.
Happy-Freedom6835@reddit
I was a huge fan of Leary, but I’ve come to realize how much he “borrowed” from Hicks, and it’s kind of shameless. Looking back, Geraldo putting him in his place on tough crowd was really a testament to who Leary was, and who Greg could have been…
Rescue me is still the greatest adaptation of firefighting there is though.

Insomniac on Comedy Central was a very enjoyable watch
wild85bill@reddit
As a child who always had trouble sleeping at night, and working night shift for 15 years now, I really appreciate that show. Dirty work doesn't quit when the sun goes down.
I'll add...I always wanted to move to the swamp and shoot Nutrea at night for a living after I saw that episode.
Hey-buuuddy@reddit
Brilliant guy and he’s still around.
somnamballista@reddit
Hey alright, glad to know the Insomniac is still roaming this earth. Man I think it's time I track down those episodes.

Sober and quit smoking, funny as ever. I thought he'd be a 50 year old at best.

Fuck that. The real ones like me were listening to Andrew Dice Clay ‘s The day laughter died on Casey in the back of a dodge omni.

Dice man was mine.
Hickory Dickory Dock Some chick was sucking my cock The clock struck two I dropped my goo I dumped the bitch on the next block. Ohhh!
Holiday-Tradition343@reddit
Dice always struck me as the type that was always told he was funny in high school, but no one found funny after they were 25 or so and didn’t have the heart to tell him, so when he learned how unfunny he actually was, he went all “fuck-you” on everyone.
VA1N@reddit
I can totally see that. His style sort of reflects how he was stuck in the past too.

The comedy channel used to play Bill Hicks' specials; even the one with the bit about a commercial that starts with a close up on a pussy and ends with "Drink Coke".
Shit, piss, fuck, cunt, cocksucker, motherfucker, and tits.
That was before the Sandler albums.
We got hit right in the face by so much cynicism and disregard for norms at the PERFECT age.

This one, and Eddie Murphy's Delirious, were the favourites of my high school group of friends; My mother was horrified that I was listening to comedy with such foul language, she was like, "Why can't you just like Red Skelton?" and I was like, "Who (or what) is Red Skeleton?"
As dirty as their language was, as far as I know, Denis Leary and Eddie Murphy never raped anyone.
djdiphenhydramine@reddit
whoa, what did I miss about Red Skelton??
Bloody_L@reddit
Oops, that last line was about Cosby, not Red Skelton.

OH. I gotcha. I was like oh shit, I hadn't thought about that guy in like thirty years but WHAT HAPPENED. Yeah that makes way more sense.

djdiphenhydramine@reddit
I actively avoid anyone my age who acts like this. I used to think this album was really funny when I was like, 15, and then I started noticing that some of my friends had begun to talk like him and act like him and I was like ohh this is not the vibe. 🤣 That kind of edgelord early Gen X, leftover boomer, 'I'm better than everyone and a bigger cynic than everyone' just didn't age well and anyone still acting like that is super cringe.
IdioticPrototype@reddit
He was edgy and funny to 16 year old me.
To adult me, he's a complete and utter tool.
If we thawed out "The Duke", he kick Denis' ass.
FuckYouNotHappening@reddit
I’m not sure about listening to this album, but I loved Dennis Leary’s standup sets on London Underground.
I might not get this right, but he made a joke about only eating in the smoking section of a restaurant and only eating cows who smoked (while smoking on stage, of course).
I think I was about 10 years old when I heard that. Cracked me the f up 😂😂😂

I got this album from file sharing in like 2000 when I was really into stand up albums and spoken word. At one point I printed out a little sign that said “life sucks, get a fuckin’ helmet” and hung it on the inside of my door in college. My roommate was uh, concerned 😅
