drilled open lock of e-bike battery

somebody drilled open the lock of my e-bike battery. it’s a bosch powerpack, I can’t remove the battery now anymore, but my only option for charging is taking out the battery to charge it in the flat. is there a fix? any help is appreciated!

I just did that to my bike the other day because I bought it without a key. It took a long ass time but I got it out without doing too much damage. Good times

And did you thoroughly check this bike wasn't stolen? E.g. with proof of purchase, and checking that the document isn't fake with the retailer. And checking the frame number online. Etc. Missing essentials like battery keys are a common sign of theft.
And a new key could have been ordered anyway if it was legitimate.

have you got any tips? how did you end up releasing the latch?

After getting the entire cylinder out, I had to start drilling deeper... I got lucky with my aim and drilled into the plastic part of the battery that the locking piston slides into. I was able to wiggle it out and replace the mechanism after that. The battery still locks in just fine.

i have a similar problem right now , did you manage to solve it ?
here is my post for context :

Were they trying to just steal the batterry? Thats kind of wild.

That's $500+ USD retail and worth at least a couple of benjamins on the black market. Beats stripping copper, for sure.
Narragah@reddit
Some of them are even more, depending on the battery. The 750wh horizontal battery has an MSRP of 1650AUD, which is 1078USD.

It's ebike batteries though, interop is limited. I assume it often goes to cell salvage.
Direct_Onion96@reddit
Bosch standardises to just a few different types and compatibility is good. It's not going to cell salvage. It would have been going to 2nd hand markets.
JasperJ@reddit
Yeah, when they took mine (Bosch BES2) out they left the cylinder alone and just removed the battery by main force, which broke the locking tab out through the side of the die cast lock casing.
fresco360@reddit
slide a thin metal in between battery and lock to trip open the mechanism and get a new lock online and replace. https://youtu.be/JuiJIcF4zus?si=Vm5Ujt8Pq1Yz2O7n

thanks I’ll try this!

Hi, did this work? My Bosch bike had the exact same thing happen to me (but different powerpack that can only be recharged if removed) and I need to know if the rest of the barrel can be drilled out and replaced with a new Abus DT2 lock.
WindowsVistaWzMyIdea@reddit
Did it work?
International-Cow889@reddit
I had to remove the barrel when I lost my keys. Hammer, large flathead screwdriver. I think two or three bangs, then I could turn the screwdriver to release the lock. Barrel was cheap to replace

The forbidden hole.
Bart1975@reddit
is there no charging port (under ar rubber flap) on the other side opposite of the lock?
Deep_Mood_7668@reddit
Yeah but he can't charge it on the street
richardrc@reddit
Surely he can throw a drop cord out the window.
dyebhai@reddit
that lock is only seconds from being removed - finish the job and replace it
CVGPi@reddit
Speaking of which, should I actually try this for my ebike which was a retailer return and the manufacturer went out of business or is it an insanely dangerous and stupid process?
Middle_Pineapple_898@reddit
I usually pick them then take apart and replace, rekey, or remove. They are usually easy to pick as they're loose fitting locks
poedraco@reddit
Actually from one person said while Flathead screwdriver. If you can get a thin one maybe go down between the battery and the latch. Since there's no lock it might not have the reinforcement to hold the latch firmly forward. Might be able to shim it and push it out. Might have to take a look out which way the latch is facing. Might have to get it from underneath..
once the battery is safely removed. There should be a way to remove the cover to the lock. And you can buy any Lock from any location to replace the previous one. Keep the old parts. Because the locking mechanism could most likely will be rattling around inside that box. You might have to swap that with a Phillips
Liarus_@reddit
whoever did that is dumb as fuck holy shit lol.
i think your best bet at that point is to find a way to disconnect the battery and remove the entire assembly and just get the battery replaced.
or maybe find a new enclosure for the battery, but i doubt you can find that.
it's sad because the only thing the guy managed to do, is destroy your battery's lock, you lost your ebike's powerhouse, and he gained nothing.
worst of all is that the battery cells inside work just fine
JasperJ@reddit
Nah, this is just the lock. The battery is fine. This is the part that stays on the bike.
thetallestwizard@reddit
Dang. Try a large diameter flathead to try and get it to turn
