To be fair I think only the Contra rotating ones have the ferocious decibels.
Recently saw an an-12 take off from MCO. Wasn't remotely as loud as I was anticipating. I could barely even hear it.

A Covak An-12 flew over a couple of years back and even at cruising altitude the droning noise caused locals to call authorities (I kid you not, I'll try and track down the newspaper article)
