I have so many questions and reading the comment sections I have even more. Can someone have a scientific paper link about this ?
Is this happening often ? Sperm whale eating near surface ? How do they kill them ? How do they catch them ?? Is it choking with his food ? This squid is gigantic !!! How do they detach the tentacules around the mouth? I have so many questions right now ??
I know they eat at squid in the depths but why is this one near surface ? This has never been seen before so I’m just wondering if there is something wrong here.
I wonder if the whale is bringing the giant squid to the surface because the pressure difference may cause the squid to die or become severely weakened, making it easier for the whale to eat it.
Considering it is wrapped around the whales jaw I feel like it got stuck at the back of the throat and the whale opted to simply go back up to the surface due to that.
I‘d argue that the idea that whales eat giant squid didn’t just pop into peoples heads so some sailors surely must have witnessed this over the last centuries. One of the first videos of it is likely though.
They have knows this for centuries because sperm whale stomachs are full of giant squid beaks and their skin is scarred from their tentacles. Still hasn't been actually witnessed before because they catch these things so deep.
I think it's more from the scars seen all over sperm whales, as well as seeing the contents of their stomach - I'm not familiar with footage like this before
I don't think they surface feed, any we've seen on the surface are in a bad way. They're deep sea creatures and enormous, and sperm whales are able to dive down to hunt them, not vice-versa?

machinegunsyphilis@reddit
what about the video makes you think that? besides the "whale parenting" text, which does seem odd, and I wonder why it's there

It's not

Explain the nonsensical wording at the bottom of the video.

I’m genuinely curious about the size of these creatures. I wish there was a banana for scale.

Carolos or Banana for scale pretty please?

Very inquisitive but this is mainly what they eat it's at incredible depths

Nope they rise quickly to eat

StupendousMalice@reddit
It's not their normal behavior because it would have been observed before. It might have gotten stuck or the whale is sick or something.

I'm actually kinda shocked they don't choke on these things now that I'm seeing it?? Must be bc they breathe out of their blow holes? wow
grosscoins@reddit
Isny this the first time this has ever been witnessed?

Woah they've been trying to see this forever, I wonder why it was so close to the surface
Thanks for sharing!
Dazeofthephoenix@reddit
I imagine that the squid is affected by the change in water pressure?
TesseractToo@reddit
Yeah it would be but if they surface fed usually it wouldn't have taken so long to get footage like this, also it appears to be dead already
Dazeofthephoenix@reddit

Yes but this video is near the surface
thebirdisdead@reddit
I imagine they wouldn’t choke since they have blow holes and don’t use their throats for breathing.
TesseractToo@reddit
yeah I didn't say anything about choking, but I wonder how they dislodge it?
EsoitOloololo@reddit
Unbelievable. Is this the first time this has been filmed?
trowawaid@reddit
Is the whale injured? Or is that mainly just squid?
medic-in-a-dress@reddit
Sperm whales frequently get injured by fighting/hunting squid, which is why they have so many scars on their face

Is the whale ok?

Of course it's okay, it's enjoying a mouthful of calamari.

Not far off, I’ve only seen one such video. They have theories about how they hunt but no one has managed to capture it because of the depth.
