ULPT How do I get around a sign-in that requires a credit card even though it isn’t charging anything?

The site i’m in requires a credit card to be input into my account in order to access even their free content. I don’t want to do this because I don’t trust them with my actual card, and I don’t want a paper trail from my card that leads back to this site either. Any sort of techniques that I could use to get a burner/fake card that doesn’t actually work and isn’t associated with me? Won’t be able to buy anything with it obviously, but accessing this site’s free content would be nice.

I typically use old gift cards with nothing on them.

Cred.AI has this feature. It’s free. I love it.

privacy.com is a wonderful solution to this, and many other problems. One card per vendor, each with a spend limit, and suddenly they can't charge you more than you allow, and when they get uppity, you shut them down with a zero spend limit or close the card. No muss, no fuss, and no one every gets your actual credit card number.

Use a virtual card. Privacy.com has a free tier that would work. Set the limit to something low like $1

Cap One has a browser plugin that generates virtual card#s. I use those and disable the virtual card immediately.
If I ever decide I want something from there I turn the card back on

How private do you need it? You can use a privacy.com virtual card and it can go away. But with a police investigation of a court order, you can be unmasked. You can get a gift card for cash, but not all authentication method work with a gift card. And some places make you show ID for a gift card as well. You can get an unhomed person to buy you one. After a few tries, one will come back with it... That is the most secure...

My bank lets me create one use debit cards. I would do that

Use a single use debit card you can buy at the drugstore they usually have around$20 bucks loaded on them pay for the card with cash use it to log in buy chips and beverages with the card if it really didn’t cost you money. Throw the card away after you spend it dry.

If it doesn’t actually charge, it may just check for a valid credit card number. Eg, just run a check on the number itself. Try entering any of the test numbers.
We used to use them when troubleshooting code.

Then just make up an expiry date in the future. Can’t hurt to try.

Revolut virtual cards. You can generate a new one for this purpose and destroy it/disable it once you're in.

Virtual card numbers. Some banks will allow you to simply destroy any connection of the card after it’s deleted. Plus you could set it to only allow that website. Capital One allows this.

I use chime, they create a virtual card number which you can change at will.

Many credit card issuers offer virtual card numbers on their websites. Check with yours.
PmMeAnnaKendrick@reddit
Change at will is the important factor though.
rantmb331@reddit
Yes. You need to be able to limit the value and deactivate when needed.

Have you tried the test credit card account numbers? Some developers forget to turn this off, some leave it on for testing.
SerDuckOfPNW@reddit
This is a good instinct. If they get your number, you’re getting charged for something eventually.

privacy card. you can set up a "proxy" card and set the spending limit to $1 (so the website thinks it's legit) then close the card after the verification.

Visa or Mastercard gift card perhaps? Find one with a low minimum to activate it.
