If we look at the broader perspective of the world's political systems, this seems to be a more general problem. Legislative bodies have been increasingly subverted by ideologies ranging from neoliberalism to outright fascism/autocracy with formerly more social democratic parties becoming untrustworthy. Genuine social liberal, socialist and ecological movements struggle on the fringes or don't have any power/representation whatsoever within the state systems.

There's been a popular resurgence of militaristic, authoritarian and fascistoid rhetoric in many of the major economies. Japan, China, Indonesia, India, Russia, Germany, France, U.K., Italy, Turkey, Spain... far-right populism is on the rise right now. Conservative parties are progressively leaning further to the (authoritarian) right and pander to bullet points made by the far-right.

To me, this looks like the perfect powder keg that's only waiting for a major global economic crisis to come along and solidify the push to the (far-)right in most of the major powers. I'm not saying that we're definitely going to have such a substantial crisis in the near future but a lot of things in the global economy are looking really spicy right now.
