These and battle damage He Man!
ChapTazDevil1@reddit
đ I had two of those, might still be in my garage, loved my childhood đđŒ
Unhappy_Run8154@reddit
What were they called? Crash ups? Crack ups?
TheConcreteGhost@reddit (OP)
Crack ups has been confirmed by its fans on the đȘĄ
ScooterWorm@reddit
I had these as well as cars that changed color under hot and cold water. Anyone else remember those?
PathofDestinyRPG@reddit
I had the Countach. I think I had one of the vans with the crashing side panel too.
HopelesslyHuman@reddit
"Color Racers!" my stepdad infamously took me shopping to get some one day and was confused because he was in stationary look for "colored erasers."
Fuckin trooper. Just trying to help a kid score something on his wishlist. Off base, but heart in the right place.
Mike9797@reddit
I still have one of the colour changers. But half of the colour changing paint is gone so itâs only half a changer. But still the half that does have the paint still changes.
This car pictured though reminds me of the battle damage Skeletor we had growing up. He had a wheel on his chest that if you hit would spin revealing the damage.
SilentFix1117@reddit
Yes. There was a range of He-Man figures that had these sprung loaded panels on their chests that would surround to show a damaged version on impact!
Mike9797@reddit
Ya exactly. I only had the skeletor but he was armless after a few weeks of having him. Then he bounced around the toy box for a number of years before mom decided to clean out the broken toys. We even had the Purple Panther(not sure of his name) toy that I believe was skeletors pet or whatever. It was coated in some kind of velvety texture that would eventually wear off to reveal a smooth plastic toy base but that stuff was my jam back in the day. Mom even got us the castle Grey Skull one year. Wish I had it all now lol
DerbGentler@reddit
Skeletor's purple panther's name is Panthor.
Mike9797@reddit
Ya thatâs it!! He felt all velvety but was a hollow plastic toy just covered in the felt or whatever it is. I donât remember what happened to the saddle but I only remember the panther itself.
camarhyn@reddit
We had several of Skeletor! I loved those things
OhTHATKayKay@reddit
Battle Damage He-Man got his ass kicked by Made To Move Barbie. He was not expecting a karate kick to the chest.
RealCauliflower773@reddit
I also had the He-Man that had a chest piece that similarly flipped and showed damage.
MechaNickzilla@reddit
I didnât have the cars that changed color with hot and cold water, but I had the GI Joe
PhillyRush@reddit
Yeah well I had the GI Joe with the Kung Fu grip, velvet hair and eyes that would shift back and forth with a lil switch on the back of his head. I also had his friends, Bullet man and the caveman like guys who GI Joe fought back then.
ConsequenceSea3334@reddit
I was the King of my preschool for the day when I was allowed to bring in my color changing Hot Wheels for my birthday. Got to bring my dog too. That mightve helped as well.
Ok-Suggestion-7965@reddit
âIt was always fun being King of Preschool.â gazes off into the distance while reminiscing of peaking in Preschool while Aquatic Ambiance plays in the background
metajames@reddit
They were called color changers I believe from late 80s - early 90s
DonutosGames@reddit
I had swamp thing, I think
Govt-Issue-SexRobot@reddit
That seller is probably excited someone is gonna buy
MechaNickzilla@reddit
That seller is me. Iâm also OP and all the other commenters
Govt-Issue-SexRobot@reddit
Oops
marbotty@reddit
The cool thing about Zartan is that he could be either Zartan, or in disguise as Walter White
DirtbagNaturalist@reddit
Yes! I also had some of both! I still do! They donât change colors anymore, they are all stuck on the âhotâ color.
srdev_ct@reddit
I absolutely had both. They were awesome. The âCrack-Upsâ were the collision ones, I forget the names of the color-change ones.
BlueberryLast6196@reddit
I had those. They were awesome
MedievalxHistorian@reddit
I put them in my mouth to change their color.
carrierael77@reddit
Had those for my kid about 12 years ago. Were so magical to me even then.
Spamberguesa@reddit
I never had the color-changing cars, but I did have these. I was so disappointed when I bought my son some Hot Wheels and they were plastic. Sacrilege.
Novel_Relation2549@reddit
I remember wanting them when I saw the commercials. I want to say they still make some of these.
Gon_777@reddit
Yes! That is the exact memory I had too. I used to love those things so much.
tarabuki@reddit
Yup. I had both as well.
bobbaganush@reddit
Yeah, I had the crash ones and the color changers. Went great with my Hypercolor shirt. I was all over the color wheel!
Vermalien@reddit
I 'member!
Bnmko_007@reddit
I still have the color changing red Testarossa. Changed into yellow when warm.
Electronic-Spinach43@reddit
Sad to say the color changes donât work anymore. I still have mine and have it a try. Neon VW bug.
Sharpshooter188@reddit
Yes! I had a few of them. They were amazing to have as a kid.
TheWorldIsNotOkay@reddit
Yup. I specificially had the yellow/green truck and silver sports car show in the OP's video, and a car that dented in the side door but I don't think it was the patrol car.
And for the color changing cars, they were sold under the name "Color Changers", "Automagic", and "Color Racers" depending on the year they were released. I had at least the Baja Bug and the Flamerunner, and maybe a few more. Hot Wheels still apparently makes them under the name "Color Shifters".
Bodog5310@reddit
Yep. That how I learned about microwaves and metal.
DanishWonder@reddit
I still have a few of each
aaronthenia@reddit
Damn, you just dropped a nostalgia bomb on me. I totally forgot about those.
Perfect_Drug@reddit
Dude, same. I had both, but had forgotten that both of these existed. I really, really wish I kept more of my childhood toys (I'm sure literally everyone says that).
PsionicKitten@reddit
Yep. Yep. And Yep!
realcommovet@reddit
The ones you stuck in your mouth to make them change color?
ChromeDestiny@reddit
I had some toy fighter jets and planes that could do that.
NPC261939@reddit
I remember having one of those. It was blue and had a rotating piece for the door to simulate damage.
Enxer@reddit
I had th crash cop car and a hot pink and purple race car
dojarelius@reddit
Combine those bad boys with the car wash that had foam rollers and you are living the high life
smoresporn0@reddit
They still make em.
KW5625@reddit
Yes, I had the color change cars, my friend had the crash damage cars
BlueProcess@reddit
Yup had em both. The crash em ups would eventually break and get stuck in the crashed state
British_Rover@reddit
I still have a bunch of hot wheels cars. Some I gave to my son. Some are still in a bag or boxes in the basement. I did have some of the color change cars but I doubt the color change effect still works.
Street-Animator-99@reddit
I had both!
DHammer79@reddit
I had both as well. The paint that changes colour is not very robust and chafes really easily, at least to my recollection.
I still have the white car from the video.
Responsible_Sound_71@reddit
Yup, had both!
darkartbootleg@reddit
They still make them, just bought a couple for my kids!
taney71@reddit
Yes, they were awesome.
kiln_ickersson@reddit
Still have some of mine they don't change anymore though
wetfloor666@reddit
I remember and had all those as well, and that reminds me of The Real Ghostbusters' toys that when you applied cold water, it would make them look like they just got slimed.
RynnB1983@reddit
Yeah I remember all those. I had the color change ones, the Ghostbusters action figures with the ghosts you attach to the back and front of the Ghostbusters. Had thunder cats and Dino riders....damn good times, part of me wishes I could go back.
ionlycome4thecomment@reddit
Memory unlocked. Thanks for reminding me I'm old!
Coakis@reddit
I had a couple of those.
El_Hefe_Ese@reddit
Yep both. I remember rubbing ice cubes on the color changing ones until I scratched the paint off
Stang1776@reddit
I remember them. You arent going crazy
LangdonAlg3r@reddit
I had the one at the end of the video in the garage. My kids inherited it.
TheConcreteGhost@reddit (OP)
I hope they are grateful for such a cool toy
ConnectedVeil@reddit
What's with the N64/SNES synthwave inspired music? Feels like Super Donkey Kong water level.
worksnake@reddit
Itâs a trend in the shorts platforms. I wonât lie and say I donât like the music, because itâs obviously very compelling for nostalgic types like me. But Iâve seen it about 500 too many times, and Iâm not even in any of those platforms. Itâs just from people posting them on Reddit. I felt it was pretty incongruent in this clip.
SkazzK@reddit
I was wondering the same thing; I think it's just because the music fits the era.
Reminded me more of the bramble level, though...
kneeandertahl@reddit
Crack ups?
hertz_donut2000@reddit
I think I still have my cop car floating around - the door flips over to make it look like itâs been t-boned.
Cake_Donut1301@reddit
Wait. Are these worth money now?
burnmenowz@reddit
I had these too.
itdoesnotmatter88@reddit
Those were so cool
tiny_purple_Alfador@reddit
My brother crashed them into each other, I would just use them like a fidget toy. "Car broken, car fixed, car broken, car fixed."
Jono_Scraggles@reddit
Glad to say I owned some of these
Gabby_Johnson1@reddit
and here I was just using a hammer on a few of them.
rubbish_heap@reddit
Me too. My favorite thing with Hot Wheels was elaborate car crashes. I watched a lot of Chips and Dukes of Hazzard.
Banjo-Oz@reddit
I had The Fall Guy (and I think Dukes of Hazzard) cars that exploded into parts when they crashed!
guyincognito121@reddit
Who else had Crash Test Dummies toys?
Banjo-Oz@reddit
I feel like they were the final evolution of all these 80's "battle damage" and "crash" toys. :)
DiazIsDirectCurrent@reddit
I still have the taxi cab
sixfourtykilo@reddit
Came here to say this! They were so cool and intricate. Based off of the stupid commercials.
The cars had simulated crumple zones and everything!
Hilsam_Adent@reddit
Mattel went all-in on this crap when the He-Man toys did well.
Banjo-Oz@reddit
I loves those too.
BBQorBust@reddit
A fond memory that I have from that time was when my Dad came down to the basement while my little brother(now deceased) and I were playing with our He-Man action figures in Castle Gray Skull. He says to us " You boys playing with your dolls again?!!!" (Jokingly). We replied back "no Dad, they're action figures!!!!!!". Good times
Chytectonas@reddit
RIP. What got him?
johnnloki@reddit
I always only got the stupid battle damage skeletor. I wanted the original skeletor so badly. Damn it.
I was in a nerd shop last Christmas and came across a castle greyskull with all the accessories and all of the stickers intact and placed squarely where they are supposed to be oriented. I have so much ptsd from poorly placed castle greyskull stickers that I'm nuts whenever applying stickers to my kid's stuff
ProfessorOfLies@reddit
Same
grilledwax@reddit
I wouldnât ever put them on for fear of putting them on wrong.
Banjo-Oz@reddit
I loved these so very much. Also, anyone else have the Fall Guy (and maybe Dukes of Hazard too) vehicles that exploded into pieces when they crashed? They were bigger than Hot Wheels and all plastic (about triple the size, maybe close to the Autobot cars from the 1984 Transformers lineup)?
TheMatt561@reddit
I wish I still had mine
burnitdwn@reddit
I had several of those, they were great. In the 90s, the game Carmageddon was magnificent as well, especially with a 3dfx Voodoo card.
RealBerzerker@reddit
And I thought I was the only one that remembered. Still have mine!
AmputeeHandModel@reddit
Oh wow, I had a couple of those. Yet another core 80s memory unlocked by this sub.
rosstein33@reddit
One of my favorite things about this sub is unlocking core memories.
This is definitely another one.
AmputeeHandModel@reddit
Yeah, frequently I'm like OMG I REMEMBER THAT TOY
NMViking@reddit
I had those. They were my favorite Hot Wheels by far. So much so that I used to do little car crashes with my regular Hot Wheels and use a garden spade to smash them to look like they were in a wreck.
TeeHack@reddit
I still have a few of these. Used to have one of the playsets too. I think it was a test drive playset or something?
ImOnlyHereForTheCoC@reddit
Similar to the He-Man figures that had âbattle damageâ chest plates (not to mention cap-powered exploding punches!)
8-Bit-Memories@reddit
There was a garage that fixed the cars??????
MechanicalGodzilla@reddit
I had a couple of the cars, but I didn't know there was also a "Fix-Up" garage too!
ChannelPure6715@reddit
Criss-cross, crashÂ
AnalMohawk@reddit
I loved these.
lateral_moves@reddit
I loved these. I remember having the silver one with canopy flip damage specifically.
NYCHW82@reddit
LOL I remember these!
oldmancoyote22@reddit
And there were some with a spring-loaded arm and trigger on the bottom. They would flip over when hit!
WittgensteinsBeetle@reddit
I had several of these!
Straight-Event-4348@reddit
Still got a couple and my kids play with them
Swimming-Food-9024@reddit
This damn audio⊠i actually kinda enjoy it. Those cars were fire though!
Basic-Pair8908@reddit
We also had crash dummy cars
mdmale21921@reddit
Those seemed like the coolest thing at the time.
badteach248@reddit
I wanted these. I did get the color changing ones though.
urbandk84@reddit
there were also actual crash test dummies toys!
BlueberryLast6196@reddit
I had these
AbbreviationsGlad833@reddit
I had micro machines that headlights would go on when you pushed down on them
throwaway83970@reddit
Crack Ups! I remember these!
unnccaassoo@reddit
Major memory unlocked. This came out when I was 9yo and neighbours kid got it for Xmas. I turned into the god of envy and tried to crash damage a couple of regular HW, but obviously ended up just destroying them. I can't remember why but I needed to have them, nagging my parents didn't worked, probably because they knew that this kind of toys gets boring after a few minutes, so I got creative with a classmate whose father worked in a die cast factory right behind my home. Somehow he discovered the location of a dumpster where they got rid of pre production casts for model cars, doll parts and electric race tracks, which in the 80s means a field near the railroad with an excavator. We spent several afternoons digging with sticks and bare hands through muddy plastic molds and sharp alloy trash, only to retrieve a few pieces with vehicle resemblance which in our mind was an entire fleet of crashed cars for free.
Rich_Celebration477@reddit
Core memory unlocked
carrierael77@reddit
Core memory unlocked.
Saucy_Baconator@reddit
I loved these. Wish they would bring them back.
TheConcreteGhost@reddit (OP)
Agreed. Toys donât have to be expensive or complicated. This was simple and cool fun. Bring them back!
Fair-Advantage9539@reddit
haha every time I see a car with a dented door I think of these!
capthazelwoodsflask@reddit
They also had He-Man toys with 'battle damage'
I had one of the cars but the latch was broken so my car was always in damage mode.
Lawreddits@reddit
Omg. Because of OP I just had the weirdest flashback to my youth. I loved the two that I had.
lexluthor_i_am@reddit
I had a couple of these! I had a lot of hot wheels from about 1985-1990. Like a hundred. i had a huge bucket. My parents bought me one or two nearly every week starting when was I like 2 years old. I barely remember my hot wheels phase because I was so young. I still had them as a kid but my favorite toys were action figures like Ninja Turtles and GI Joe. I played them all the way up to like 13 years old. I know it's kinda old but i had a long childhood, which I'm grateful for. :)
Novel_Relation2549@reddit
Crumples zones were less "crumply" back then weren't they? Not a great thing for the real cars and walking away from a crash, but better for making toys like this.
SkazzK@reddit
Wow. Usually when these toy posts come up, they're about toys that never made it to the Netherlands.
But I remember having the middle two cars of the four briefly shown at the beginning of the video. Oh, the nostalgia...
elgarraz@reddit
Had just one, and the repair shop
LifelsG00d@reddit
All I recall are the color change carsâŠthought they were soooo cool
Pitiful-Body-780@reddit
I had that yellow one
gmcwbbb80@reddit
Oh yeah, I remember those. Never had any myself.
GaldonTheWarrior@reddit
Me and my bro definitely had a few of these bad boys
The-Crawling-Chaos@reddit
They had a warning on them not to get them wet. Turns out, if you got them wet, they would no longer stay in the undamaged position ever again.
Tiger-Budget@reddit
He-man did as well, same years too i think?
CSWorldChamp@reddit
I had two of those.
stlredbird@reddit
I had a few. Loved em.
One-Earth9294@reddit
I had a few of these. Cop Car and the silver supercar.
My childhood was getting a little bit of everything, is what this sub has taught me. A lot of memories to unlock though.
Sharpshooter188@reddit
Oh crap I forgot about these. Didnt a few also change colors if you dipped them in hot water or something?
sator-2D-rotas@reddit
I had the yellow one and another that looked like it was t-boned. I remember the plastic hood on the yellow one broke off so it was always wreaked.
a_seventh_knot@reddit
I remember I had the cop car.
AngryTree76@reddit
Me too. Eventually, the tab that held the door on the intact side wore down, so it was always crashed.
Donuil23@reddit
Same! Not only perpetually crashed, but the damage was eventually angled down.
Also had the rear-ended maroon truck.
a_seventh_knot@reddit
Yup, same thing happened to me.
debaser64@reddit
Just like real life!
swish301@reddit
Yes!
ItchyMcHotspot@reddit
They were called âcrack-ups.â
wtbman@reddit
I still have my "cop car". The paint is quite faded but last I remember it would still stay un-crashed.
snn1326j@reddit
I still have my brotherâs - my son plays with it now and loves it.
Garudius@reddit
Still have several in storage
AcademicCounty@reddit
Yes! On a related note, I was trying to explain Crash test dummy toys to my fifteen year old the other day and he looked at me like I had two heads...
carradio81@reddit

spazz720@reddit
I had those
CaptPotter47@reddit

both-shoes-off@reddit
Never considered it weird until now.
Codenamehardhat77@reddit
I had the yellow car and green car from the picture. Always wanted more of these they were pretty cool.
tjdux@reddit
I tried to DIY some with a hammer. It wasn't realistic per se, but the cars did end up looking wrecked.
Normal512@reddit
A few hot wheels and more than a couple gi joes may have run afoul of some firecrackers and a bb gun.
FoofaFighters@reddit
Hell we gave ourselves battle damage with those. I have no idea how we kids all managed to keep our fingers/eyeballs growing up.
localm-@reddit
I took mine into the street and repeatedly slammed them down on the road to make mine. Worked great! Local tire shop appreciated it as well I assume.
AbsolutZer0_v2@reddit
Ive still got mine
remberly@reddit
The yellow one! I had thr yellow one!
SirMayday1@reddit
I actually quite fondly remember those. Would've bet I was older than 4 when I first got some, but I did love the gimmick.
Aziruth-Dragon-God@reddit
I had those same vehicles.
yolorelli@reddit
Damn. I had a couple of these. Definitely the police car.
KW5625@reddit
Friend of mine had some and they were the coolest.
eulynn34@reddit
Heck yea, I remember these. For the cars that couldn't do this-- we'd just crush them in a vise or smash them with rocks

Jomolungma@reddit
And they were awesome
DadaShart@reddit
I remember these.
mrmatt244@reddit

boggstown@reddit
Omg...major memory relapse....best hot wheels ever
JamesLingk@reddit
I vividly remember these
cmacfarland64@reddit
I love this sub. Shit that had completely vanished from my brain is constantly on display here and it makes me feel like I was playing with these just yesterday.
Buttercreamdeath@reddit
I remember these. Yes, they were cool but I remember them peeling and cracking after being slammed into things.
MyCleverNewName@reddit
The only people who loved these more than me were my parents because before these I used to "simulate" car accidents with a hammer or heavy rock... And that was kind of a one-n-done sort of thing... đ€Šââïž
twilightswimmer@reddit
I still have one.
elgigantedelsur@reddit
Had some of these, they were coolÂ
SweatyPalmsSunday@reddit
My cousin and I went to another mutual cousin of ours for a sleepover. On our way home he showed me one these cars heâd pocketed. I never understood the lack of guilt kids with sticky fingers have.
boywonderrrrrrrrrr@reddit
I had one. The mechanism eventually wore down, the piece wouldn't stay flipped in, and you were left with a busted up car. Still cool.
Wintaru@reddit
Oh man I forgot all about these.

cuppachuppa@reddit
As I watched this, a piece of my brain lit-up. A piece that hasn't been activated for over 40 years. But it's been sitting there, holding on to the memories of me playing with these cars. Waiting. For this moment.
I'd completely forgotten about these but now totally remember them.
Brains are weird.
DDark_Devon@reddit
Definitely unlocked a memory right there wow
peteywheatstraw420@reddit
I had these and they were absolutely my favorite ones lol

Yep. My favorite Hot Wheels that I had. Eventually they wouldnât want to click back in to place, if you played with them pretty hard like most of us did.
Megalomidiac@reddit
They where cool and I had also He-Man with this armor which had two stages of damage.
L31121@reddit

Quixotegut@reddit
Ummm, that's just battle damage, and it prepared us for driving the lawless wasteland of the mid 90's.
ScotterMcJohnsonator@reddit
Hell yeah these were awesome.
They also had a whole line of Masters Of the Universe action figures that showed damage on their chest - it flipped twice if I remember correctly
Roklam@reddit
