The X1, X2, and X3 aren’t really worth it, they’re largely cost engineered and it shows. It’s really the X5/GLE/Q7 that actually has more luxury appointments. The X5 is due for a refresh for 2027, and the rumor is that it’ll keep the I6 and V8 motors. Curious to see if BMW fucks those up or keeps some level of refinement and luxury materials and build quality.

Idm the exterior but the interior is really a major letdown, especially when you compare it to the previous model which was really high end when they facelifted it. The new one feels worse than the interior of a Mazda CX-60 or GMC Acadia which cost much, much less, let alone its direct competitors from Audi, Genesis, Lexus & MB.

For what it’s worth BMW already announced that they will improve the materials on the door so they admitted that they took it too far. The triangle of shame is still there but when you go into the configurator you can see that the door opener is galvanized and not plain plastic anymore and they added door sills.

Honestly the first three gens are really good for what they are. I still prefer my 3er Wagon but wouldn’t mind an E83 3.0si. The F25 and G01 are better value and more usable daily vehicles than the Macan IMO. I’m still a low range or bust kinda guy, but I wouldn’t be mad if I had to have an X3 or 5.

I haven't seen or driven the new Audi, but I don't think I would consider the new X3 at all. I think you'd be better off waiting for the LCI or picking up a CPO last gen X3. The interior and exterior are both better to look at, and with iDrive 7 you still get all the physical controls. I went from a car with ID7, to ID8, and back to ID7. It's just better to live with every day. And speaking of the X3 LCI, it's hard to imagine they won't make any changes. There's been way more complaints about the interior quality of this thing compared to everything else they've released lately according to some of the folks at my local dealer (and all of the newer models feel like they have interior downgrades). They are making a few "improvements" to the 26MY but it's not enough. I've seen the new X3 in person and it made the new X1 look a lot more appealing, sure it has worse driving dynamics and is basically a mini but the interior somehow feels more lux.

I just had Genesis GV80 as a loaner and even though it has the wide screens, it still has really nice buttons and knobs for climate, audio, and on the steering wheel. You can even choose to use the scroll wheel and buttons to operate the screen, even though it's also a touchscreen.

What if people grew up loving the types of cars BMW/etc used to make, and are disappointed at the loss of "driver focused", timeless looking, more traditional cars from these brands? It's not unreasonable for there to be different groups of car people who are into different aspects of cars, but somehow r/cars always has the stereotypical modern BMW defender in every thread. This is a thread about the X3, probably the least well received X3 ever (even among people who like crossovers); and still you're defending BMW instead of discussing the car itself. I'm sure there's aspects of the X3 that are ok, but that interior is just poorly designed.

Record sales is relevant because it indicates that the criticism here, most of which is subjective around styling, UX, and design is a minority opinion. If more people than ever are buying these cars, despite them being more overpriced than ever, it suggests that many buyers like the direction BMW is going. At the end of the day, cash, or in this case, sales, is king. Record sales means that people, who are not enthusiasts, are buying these vehicles. It's why **most** auto manufacturers are moving to more screens, more piano black, more SUVs, and more tech. It's what most consumers want. When they see the car in the showroom or online, they don't think about how it'll drive or how they'll interact with it. They want everything I just mentioned. Like everything else, it's all about instant gratification. I guarantee you that if BMW, or any other manufacturer, brought back a vehicle produced in 2000 that we consider perfect today, and modernized it with modern safety features, it would be one of the worst selling vehicles in that lineup. There is absolutely no way a modernized BMW 5 series E39 would sell today compared to the current 3 series.

Sales is king... for the car companies. But individual people should be allowed priorities that are completely different than those of BMW/Audi/whatever. Imagine we were talking about a restaurant instead, or a band. Sure they now have "record sales" after drifting away from their roots, appealing to the average middle-class profile, catering to the global market, and becoming more generic. Can the original fans not be able to complain without, every single time, the main counter being, *look at the sales numbers*? It takes away from nuanced, interesting discussion on the actual car itself (or in the other two examples: the food/ingredient quality, or the music itself). Also like others have mentioned, the last X3 had impressive sales too, and that car did it without slapping together a plasticy, buttonless interior, complete with 2010s gaming PC lighting. You can have big screens without degrading the UX, just have a row of buttons below the screen. Cadillac does it. Many last gen BMWs did this very well.

Audi will be down 40% in 5 years They are in an appaling state in regards to reliability, and the newer the model the worse things are getting. The PPE is a fantastic platform mechanically and electrically, but it's a complete loss in regards to software. The cars they waited two years longer to release due to software issues, and the software they came up with is the biggest POS I've ever seen. They'll need at the very least another 2 years of getting the software to a state where it is comparable with other brands again. And that says nothing about the myriad of bugs the software has which might not be solveable at all

“Car enthusiasts” are not a very big segment for any of these brands. That’s the entire story. It’s status, brand recognition, and a bunch of features car people don’t like and/or care about (dashboard leds, light-up grills, etc). Porsche arguably is doing the best of the three at sticking to what car enthusiasts want, but only in the 718 and 911 because they’re catering to people who are buying it specifically as a toy. And before anyone says it, the Macan being an suv is compromise from the start so I don’t think they’re anywhere near being a proper sports car.

Idk I drove the v6 Genesis for a month as a rental, and it’s pretty overhyped. The powertrain is nowhere near a B58, it feels unathletic, a bit lazy. It does not want to play. The chassis is too soft compared to a M340i. I do like the looks though. I’d say it is 80% there. It’s one of those things if you don’t know what a M340i is like, then G70 will do the job. Just like if you don’t know how a G80 M3 drives, most people will think the M340i is more than enough, 80% there too.

I had a 22 3.3t and in sport mode it felt fine, and that replaced a tuned B9 Audi S4 with a tad over 400whp. It was about 90-95% of a M340i for substantially less $$. And it fit the spot very well. Genuinely have no idea what you all were expecting out of it.

Oh! Yes that explains a lot. The Audi tune of the ZF8 is pretty mild and the EA839 is a little bit laggy/sleepy. It’s actually so weak at part throttle than the Q7 got worse fuel economy and slower when it switched to the 839 from the supercharger V6. I’m coming from the BMW M/S55 and B58 and Alfa tunes of the ZF8z

As someone who has owned the previous generations of both of these, Audi and BMW have really ruined the design. That being said, I’m not which one I’d take. Last gen, I had a slight preference to the Audi because of the SQ5’s superior ride quality, but the B58 cannot be ignored. BMW powertrains are just that good.

It takes years before design inception and implementation. I assume what we are seeing is the tesla-ification of everything, where they Teslas became very popular with the Model 3/Ys which had minimalistic, everything-on-screen design. So, all the car manufacturers assumed that everyone only wanted EVs and all cars need to have big-ass screens. And even better, if theres 100 of them in there. I assume in a few years time, we'll see more knobs and buttons in the interiors

We leased quite a few Audis at work, but we just started a ban on leasing Audis. Out of the last four Audis we got, we lemon lawed one, are in the process of lemon lawing two more, and the fourth one could have been lemon lawed but the driver didnt know it exists and was one of those "they gave me my first nice company car, can't be too critical" guys, otherwise we would have lemon lawed it for brake failures Audi is in a shocking state right now, and the dealerships have a massive attitude problem. Worst service I've ever received at a dealership. Our local Suzuki dealer has better service when you bring in an 8 year old Swift than my Audi dealer had when I brought my 1 month old car in for the third time and they offered me a RENTAL manual A1 for 56 euro a day. As replacement for a 110k euro car that shit the bed so hard we weren't even sure it could ever be revived. And thats just the stuff that was broken, not even the stuff that is shit but intended by Audi to be shit. And don't even get me started on the available color options from Audi, or I might get a heart attack Audi deserves all the bad things

just kinda happened to turn out that way. It was 100% Japanese 4 years ago. GT-R, GS 350 and a Tacoma. GT-R's were selling for stupid amounts. Sold it for a lot more than I paid for it, enough to get my money back and buy the Focus + down payment for the Bronco

At the time, being my first car and all, I didn't have a frame of reference to compare it to, for better or worse. Really don't mind the looks of the X3 in this matte color I like that someone finally qualified how much of an improvement the platforms are, big step over the previous gen, disappointing audi messed up the trans tuning, they could have had a much-needed winner on their hands Feel like I'd still take the base (not s) q5 over the base (not s) x3 even if its the other way around for the sportier variants

Comfort suspension is plenty soft for city streets and sport is perfect for everything else. I got in a rental non-M40 for a day and hated how soft and floaty it felt.

The GLC is also a massive step up, that would be my personal pick. I have a feeling BMW will do a very mild refresh and bring the interior up to snuff a little bit more but said it before this gen overall is a generational improvement for platforms and sadly, that is difficult to communicate over a screen Even considering the interior & styling I'd much rather the new gens than the previous gens, *especially* the q5 which felt and drove dated when it launched, much less 8 years later

I’ve always preferred the X3 over the GLC but that changes for this generation. I can’t do the cheap interior of the BMW and the horrible looks on the outside. Same with the new Q5, it looks so economy car — both exterior and interior.

The screen is so luxurious they put it in every model. Look at the beautiful curve and size. It’s so nice and luxurious that they couldn’t bare to hide it but blending it in. It strikingly protrudes out in all its glory.

It really was. And it's not because iDrive 8+ sucks, it's because the inclusion of it meant the cost cutting everywhere else. There's no reason they have to remove all the physical controls or downgrade the materials other than the whole thing is about cost cutting. The next thing they are working on is apparently some of the 26MY cars are going to start coming with a single key fob instead of two (because of digital key). I don't see how that can be considered anything other than cost cutting.

HVAC moving to the touch screen is the feature latch onto and hate for really no reason. On iDrive the HVAC temp is fixed to the lower part of the screen in roughly the same place the physical buttons are. You adjust them once, maybe twice a ride at most and otherwise keep it on auto and it does its thing. If you're changing the temp more than that you have issues and are far from the norm of users. Many people on Reddit way overestimate how many times they have to press/adjust stuff on their car. The touchscreens are much nicer than older iDrive systems, but the other surrounding materials are meh.

So they prefer the BMW luxury cross-over despite it being appreciably worse than the Audi in all the characteristics traditionally used to separate luxury automobiles from economy ones (NVH, ride quality, material quality, fit & finish) simply because it doesn't suck at some of the basic elements of being a car? Safety/convenience features like start-stop/lane-keep/ACC are things that a Subaru Forester or Maxda CX-50 (that cost $20k less) do perfectly well. I can see why they went with that subtitle...
