Does $300 sound right for a rimjob?

Rear wheel build quote from a trusted ebike shop in my area. I sure as heck can't do it myself so I'm happy to pay a pro for it. But also am broke asf and wanna get mobile again asap.... Bummed about renting city bikes for a month
Chili327@reddit
$140 seems a bit high for the build labor, especially if you bought the parts from them. Did they say anything about the labor charge?
tomcatx2@reddit
Hub motors take more time and are more cumbersome to cut out, calculate lengths, lace, tension and true. I don’t care if you did it once or a thousand times. $140 is reasonable for an ebike build. Some will be more some will be less.
Chili327@reddit
Yea eBike (hub motor) I missed that part.

Honestly not all rimjobs are priced the same, it's all about who performs the rimjob and how good they are. If you pay for the whole package then you'll tip aswell.. hope this helps

It’s called a “wheel truing”. A “rim job” is something else entirely…
ZucchiniAlert2582@reddit
It’s actually called a wheel-build or a re-lace in this case. Truing is adjusting the existing spokes to straighten the rim. He is getting billed for new spokes and new rim. And the labor to assemble and tension it all.
RollingMeteors@reddit
Yes I know but I didn't look at the line items on the receipt before I made my original comment, definitely ballpark for a 'rimjob'.
nrgins@reddit
Wheel truing is adjusting the spokes on the wheel. The op is talking about having his rear wheel rebuilt. That's not wheel truing
RollingMeteors@reddit
¡That's true for a wheel rebuild!
nrgins@reddit
That was wheely bad.
nateknutson@reddit
They're called rimjobs, this is r/ebikes.
TheCamBearPig@reddit
Nah. Let him figure that out. It’s DEFINITELY called a rim job. You should call around for as many quotes as you can.

Not to mention paying $300 for one. I’ve had plenty for cheaper.

Wait a minute... are you talking about paying me to give me a rimjob? Or me paying you for you to give me one? Or me paying you to give you one? Or you paying me to give you one?
There is 4 ways that this could go, and three of them have different appropriate price levels. One of them is out of the question.
Davo2000@reddit
You also had a nipple reduced. If this was during the rim job, that requires a great deal of flexibility. So yeah $300.
DjiMtb@reddit
Could have worded that differently 💀
zachsilvey@reddit
On the higher end of normal for labor cost.
mmeiser@reddit
I would argue its spot on. It's not as easy rebuilding an ebike hub.
Whats_in_the_glass@reddit
Nonsense. Hub wheels tend to have a 1 cross lacing pattern. Done properly, the gauge of the spoke has nothing to do with difficulty. I routinely relace 12 g spoke hub wheels. It's no different than lacing any other wheel save for the shorter lengths of the spokes.
mmeiser@reddit
The lace pattern does make it easier. Have laced more wheels then I care to in my day. A lot of internal hubs. Heavier gauge spokes are a pain in the -ss but admitedly only becauee of the two across pattern.
i assume anything 26" or bigger still uses the two across pattern. I will be taking a look. What wheel sizes you running?
chair--hunt@reddit (OP)
Ty for a legit reply haha
JG-at-Prime@reddit
If they are lacing up a hub motor then that’s about right.
I had this done a while ago. I had them use 13ga spokes (the heaviest that would fit the hub) and the tech scratched the crackers out of the new wheel.
The job took almost two months longer than they said it would. I’m guessing that they had a really, really bad time when doing it.
I learned my lesson. I’m never buying an unmounted hub motor again. Unless you lace it up yourself there is no money to be saved.
Alive-Bid9086@reddit
I relaced a rear wheel with Bafang hub and 23" rim. Took me 4-5 hours to do. Next time I would probably do it in 3 hours. The spokes are unbendable, you must lace in the right order, all 36 spokes. Ordinary lacing for 36 spokes is each group of 9 spokes.
Whats_in_the_glass@reddit
Hub wheels generally have a 1 cross pattern. It's very easy to lace a hub wheel.
DickweedMcGee@reddit
….two months longer than they said it would…
Tbf, never relaced a wheel myself and I know it takes much, much longer than the 90 second YT DIY videos show but months to finish!?! Was this like an Amish Blacksmith or something?
Safe-Spot-4757@reddit
You gotta understand. You can have a 30 year mechanic and they’re not used to these e-bikes. And too be fair months is too long unless the shop was stacking labor which is its own thing. But a lot of times we have to get in contact with companies that won’t respond. Or the electricals are having a fit. We have a ride1up in my shop that’s been throwing fits. We ordered parts from them brand new and replaced and are still getting error codes. We’ve done everything they’ve said and this bike is now hitting its 3rd month in the shop. The craziest thing is these problems really aren’t that uncommon and it really sucks.

Safe-Spot-4757@reddit
Our guy who’s mainly been handling it has been using one. Just some weird hiccup in the system we haven’t been able to track down yet
Daincats@reddit
In my area there is one bike shop. Next closest is a 3 hour drive. Unless you pay a fortune for a rush job you get your bike when you get it. So during spring summer its pay rush or get your bike back in the winter.
JG-at-Prime@reddit
Nope. Local bike shop. The guy seemed very knowledgeable when I first brought him the hub motor.
I’m guessing that it was one of those jobs where everything went wrong. I’m not sure he had ever laced up a motor before.
He may have been slightly out of his depth. He mentioned that they were shipped the wrong size spokes at least once. I’m wondering if they were having trouble measuring.
Dunno. 🤷♀️
Luckily for me I was in zero hurry since I was still waiting on other parts at the time.
I was in a position where i didn’t really care how long it took.
But yeah. I probably could have learned to do it myself in that time.
Never again. That’s for sure.
loquacious@reddit
Ex mechanic and DIY rider, here:
Yeah, $300 is a wee bit high. For that kind of money you can practically buy a a new pre built hub motor and wheel IF you can find something that's compatible without a huge time sink chasing down returns, etc.
It's about $150 around here for a normal wheel rebuild using standard sized spokes, including parts and labor at around $1 minute. That may be a friend of the shop price, but that's about right for a full spoke replacement and truing
With a hub motor wheel specs like spoke length are often all over the place. so that means cutting and threading custom spokes or hours on the phone and email trying to get replacements. In either case time and labor costs go up in a hurry and a hub motor rebuild is probably about twice the work and hassle of a normal wheel.
There's also issues with working on some ebikes because their frame designs can be all over the place in a bad way. The more that your ebike looks and works like a normal analog bike the better. The more your ebike resembles a fat tire scooter or moped, the more likely it's going to he a pain in the ass to work on and take more time/costs in labor and chasing down non standardized parts.
At my local shop, for example, I once saw them do a tube replacement on a fat tire moped style ebike and run up a $450 labor bill because they had to take apart the whole back end and frame of the bike just to get the damn wheel off to get at the tube and tire.
And if you looked at the frame and bike it looked like the wheel would come off like a normal bike, but nope. Brake caliper had to come off first, and for the caliper to come off you had to take apart the two piece rear frame first. The calipers, then wiring harness, and then finally you could get the whole wheel off.
And then they couldn't get the thin, floppy and really cheap OEM fat tire tomseat on the rim properly even when using tubeless tire mounting skills and high oressure air. Every time they got the bead to catch and lock it was out of round and hopping. These are all issues caused by cheap rubber and rim channels.
Anyway, a new tube and labor is usually like $15 and maaaaybe a 10 minute job. That one was like 4 hours and $450 of labor on a bike that was probably under $1k brand new.
So... yeah. $300 is a bit high but it's in the ballpark.

I was only charged $50 down by the docks

no but to be serious, they spoke and nipple prices are decent a little high, but they’re decent, but that labor rate is ridiculous to build a wheel
notagoodspelller@reddit
Most bike shops charge $75 an hour for labor. I don't have the equipment or knowledge to do the job compared to my buddy who owns a bike shop and gives me a huge discount - he charges me $175 to put a motor in a new rim when I supply the rim and spokes. So honestly, that seems completely right to me and close to the markup I'd use when charging a customer for the service and parts.
ip2k@reddit
+1, here’s the bill for when I had a new carbon rim that I supplied (got a great deal on it from some closeout sale online) set up on a rear hub motor of a class 1 gravel bike
I was having a lot of other maintenance done at the same time as well, and they had to start from the non-broken previously built wheel, so they charged for de-lacing that. It was set up tubeless, and I run foam inserts, so they charged for tire installation too since it’s a PITA job with the sealant and everything.

Do you already have a hub? Just curious. Yes, it's not cheap, but wheels are very important and you want this done right. Wheels and tires really give you a good return for your money. BTW, I don't think the rate is unreasonable since they are providing a rim. Make sure they are using brass nipples, and good quality spokes. As you can see, the highest cost is the labor - you may as well use good quality parts. Good luck.

Parts are parts, labor is labor.
$140/hour for labor seems a little high, but not outside the realm of believably.
If you're broke, you should consider getting more skills. Like it might have taken you 4 hours to figure that out and do it, do you make $35/hour? Probably not because if you did you wouldn't be broke. This is how capitalism and economic specialization works.
Sad part is the mechanic actually doing it probably isn't making $35/hour, or is just.
Parts seem a little high too, esp. the spokes themselves, perhaps they were name brand/better quality or just "black"
In retrospect, you might have built the wheel yourself, gotten it as good as you could, and paid 1/2 hour for truing, which is the part that takes practice and skill.
standardatheist@reddit
They cute?
stormdelta@reddit
That seems pretty high to me on the labor side. My local bike shop only cost me around $80 in labor for a wheel build earlier this year.
mechdavetech@reddit
In my area, Los Angeles, this seems normal. You can find a little more or a little less depending on what they have on hand.
$.50 spoke nipple sounds like currentl pricing. Are they are using a high quality part. A normal bike is about .15-.30. A light weight is .30-.50
$2 spokes sounds normal for blanks. Depending on the spoke used. The key here is the blanks that need to be threaded.
Labor also sounds normal since it is going to an e-bike.
Buying blanks is Interesting. Some will sell it as a premium part of build. While in reality it saves a lot of money to the shop. It just adds time to the build.and a lot of time if the tech doesnt have much wheel building time under their belt.

Building a good bike wheel by hand takes skill and time. If you're replacing a rim you're building a whole wheel. You can probably buy a machine built wheel online for cheaper than that but it won't have the strength of a properly made hand built wheel.

Natrone86@reddit
I would say that the tariffs are probably why the supplies are a little more expensive. But generally spokes are kind of expensive. Because there are custom type of item and building. IDK The nice lady down the road said she would get me one for a bit less, I would keep shopping around some intersections have better ones than others
In all seriousness though, doesn't seem like the worst pricing to rebuild a wheel especially for an ebike. My BMX Rims would be more than that to rebuild and thats just a simple pedal cassette hub

Ain't too many crossing streets round here, can't all be choosers i suppose!
And ye, I didn't think it sounded too bad given it's a whole ass rebuild. Ty for verifying 🫶
