hi, i’m travelling to dallas for a week solo, can anyone tell me areas to avoid, and also where to buy pepper spray (or something else i might need)
staying in downtown dallas
Alum2608@reddit
Walmart, academy, or any other sporting goods store. Lots of options
Independent-Ad-7084@reddit (OP)
for the pepper spray right
Realistic-Pay-6931@reddit
When you buy the pepper spray, look for GEL. Less likely to blow in the wind (affecting you), easier to shoot and goes farther because it's slightly heavier substance. Will stick to someone and it BURNS, If they try to wash it off - it makes it worse.
Viper_ACR@reddit
Yeah most sporting goods stores will sell them
ShelbyDriver@reddit
Tell us what you want to do and we can give you go or no-go advice.

mall arboretum and botanical garden bucees record stores cafes birria tacos raising canes crumbl ulta beauty maybe some museums
will be taking uber/lyft everywhere
msondo@reddit
There is a Raising Canes owned by Post Malone off Loop 12 in West Dallas that is all decked out in Cowboys decor.
Josey and Forever Young are good record stores
Independent-Ad-7084@reddit (OP)
oh cool i didnt know about the canes. thanks so much ill check that one out for sure!
odd-mod@reddit
And if you're going to the Arboretum, Good Records is just a couple of blocks down from the entrance on Garland Road.
I'd also suggest visiting Curiosities as well (it's between the arboretum & Good Records). It's am amazing store of weird vintage, antiques and oddities.
RelativelyRidiculous@reddit
The Arboretum is a great choice! I need to pick a weekend for the family to meet up there in the next few weeks. We go every fall.
Skip crumbl and try a local bakery. The quality will be worlds better. Kessler Baking Studio is known for exceptional cookies but seems like it may be a bit out of your way. Lubella's Patisserie has amazing handcrafted pastries of all sorts. Lujano's is a taco shop I like that isn't far from Lubella's.
Seconding Mikes Chicken instead of Raising Canes.
Daytime anywhere is fine. After dark avoid South Dallas which means anything south of I-30. I've been all over downtown Dallas at all hours and never needed pepper spray.
Independent-Ad-7084@reddit (OP)
thanks! what is south of 1-30? sorry i tried searching it up i dont really understand where it is🫠
RelativelyRidiculous@reddit
Oh sorry if you go to google maps and search for "South Dallas" it will show you that area on the map. If you look closely the northern border is interstate highway 30. My google maps at least just says "I-30".
Independent-Ad-7084@reddit (OP)
thank you :)
Waltz-Resident@reddit
Don’t go to the post Malone raising canes, it’s just a blue theme version. Honestly when I went, it was pretty dirty. I would recommend mikes chicken as well. Also, buccees from Dallas is going to be a far drive and might be cheaper to rent a car since you look like you’ll have uber a lot for all those destinations. I would recommend the Perot science museum. I’m assuming you’re an out of state visitor.
sameolemeek@reddit
Skip raising canes and go to mikes chicken for chicken tender
Waltz-Resident@reddit
I thought mikes chicken was overrated to be honest. Wasn’t that good
Csharp27@reddit
Absolutely
Dawnzarelli@reddit
If you’re staying downtown, the museums are walkable. Josey Records is far (not as far as Buccee’s), but near enough to the Galleria. Raising Canes - idk what the appeal is. Mike’s is a great suggestion but both locations aren’t really near anything. Brick and Bone is surrounded by Deep Ellum which is walkable from downtown in daylight or a short uber. Lots of murals on buildings. Allgood Cafe is over there. Cute vibe inside and I like their food.
Bishop Arts is super walkable and has shops, coffee shops and cafes, and Spinster Records.
trying_to_adult_here@reddit
I’m not familiar with all the museums, but if you’re especially worried about safety I’d recommend Ubering rather than walking to the Perot and Dallas Museum of Art, which it sounds like was your plan. I took the DART there from the suburbs in daylight and then walked from the station to the Perot daylight with a friend and was fine. But there are lots of homeless people at the downtown DART stations.
I personally would not use the DART or walk alone in that area at night, though I’ll happily take the DART alone during the day (I’m a woman).
Dawnzarelli@reddit
The DMA is in downtown. I can’t fathom having to uber a matter of blocks. I’d even walk to the Perot but that one at least seems like a reasonable one to consider getting a car to
Csharp27@reddit
Kind of shocked you didn’t say barbecue. Everybody says barbecue. Also just about anywhere’s pretty safe during the day. Maybe avoid going south of downtown unless you’re going to bishop arts or the zoo if possible. Not many reasons to go down there when visiting anyways. Chilangos Tacos for birria.
Independent-Ad-7084@reddit (OP)
can you share more about barbecues? also thanks for the birria suggestion ill look for that!
Csharp27@reddit
Texas is very famous for our smoked meats, especially brisket, ribs, and sausage. Dallas has several awesome spots for those, including Hurtado, Cattleack, Terry Blacks, Pecan Lodge, and Lockhart. Cattleack is the best of those but only open a couple days a week for lunch and sort of takes a whole morning to try, so I’d suggest going to Hurtado by the Dallas farmers market for lunch one day if you can and grabbing some (specify moist) brisket, sausage, and Texas twinkies (jalapeños stuffed w/brisket and cream chz wrapped in bacon). Actually Hurtado has some killer birria tacos too if you want to knock it all out in one go.
sweettpotatopie@reddit
Which mall, galleria? There are a ton of smaller shopping centers and two main malls in Dallas. Also, bucees is crazy far from downtown Dallas to go by uber/lift, there is one in Denton, one by TX Motor Speedway, and one in McKinney. The one by TX Motor Speedway at least has an outdoor mall that you can walk to from Bucees. Not familiar with the one in McKinney. The one in Denton is probably not worth your time.
malicious-turd@reddit
How thoughtful, taking Uber to a gas station so they can fill up before taking you right back 😂
Independent-Ad-7084@reddit (OP)
😔🫠 i wanna see what it looks like
ShelbyDriver@reddit
It's not going to be worth the cost of an Uber.
TicketAggressive@reddit
Uber/Lyft from Downtown to Bucees and back is gonna be $$$$$. Ulta is a giant meh.
TexasBaconMan@reddit
You can get pepper spray at any gun store.
jessy_pooh@reddit
And target!
Sanchastayswoke@reddit
Also most sporting goods stores
liquidnight247@reddit
I’d rent a car, safer, cheaper
DelightfulTexas@reddit
Go to the Galleria Mall and Dallas Arboretum.
liquidnight247@reddit
And north park mall
Independent-Ad-7084@reddit (OP)
thank you!
Tejanisima@reddit
Personally I would suggest Northpark above Galleria. Also has ritzy stores but a lot more atmosphere, history, and even sculpture. Additionally closer to downtown so won't run up your rideshare bill as high.
Sanchastayswoke@reddit
Saaame re Northpark. It’s my fave mall ever
Alternative-Sort-446@reddit
Avoid deep Ellum and downtown at night.
goodjuju123@reddit
Downtown is not too safe.
CubedMeatAtrocity@reddit
Downtown is just fine.
finchwacky@reddit
Stick to Deep Ellum for nightlife but be street smart, pepper spray is at Academy Sports.
ParsonJackRussell@reddit
Highland Park Village for shopping
rohrloud@reddit
Downtown is completely safe during the day and generally safe at night. Probably not at 2am
riceu@reddit
You’ve asked this kind of question like 5x over in your 1 week Reddit history. And tbh you sound like you’re in a bad way, looking for an answer that no one can give you.
There is no guarantee of safety, anywhere. It seems like you know this already. Dallas is no different. It’s just another city, like the one you live in and like other cities you’ve visited.
Go where you want to go. The town is generally really safe, especially tourist destinations. You might feel uncomfortable in some parts of downtown during your stay. That’s okay, have your wits about you and get to where you want to go. Same as any other city. You shouldn’t have a problem.
You can find pepper spray at Walmart or target, if that helps you to be confident during your stay but i doubt you’ll use it.
Instead, I suggest that you take a breath. Breathe and be confident and excited about your travel, and enjoy the concert.
Fiss@reddit
You can get pepper spray at any Walmart, sporting good store or gun store
hunchojack1@reddit
Harry Hines is the safest spot
