Just do commercial union construction, it's almost exclusively new install so you're mostly just gluing brand new pipe legos together. Plus most of the big companies are using prefab sections to save time now which makes it easier. It's the easiest $80/hour you'll ever make (at least that's what they get paid in my area). I would have done it if running heavy equipment wasn't so much more fun and interesting. Still probably should have because operators here are only at $61/hour.
Is welding still a big cash cow? I considered getting into it a long time ago cause it seemed to pay very very well. Not sure if that's still the case anymore though.
Not really, especially comparing it to the other trades. Unless you want to always travel.
You’re still gonna get shocked and deal with shit, along with your eyes and more chemicals. Might as well just pursue plumbing/hvac/ electrician anyways.
I think millwright (a specialty do welding) does but it's a bit iffy. Apparently having your own rig is expensive and risky but can be lucrative. Maybe look up some posts on r/welding on the matter
Honestly the only trade that doesnt fuck up my work. I usually show up when someone fucked up natural stone and what not. Everyone but the carpenter walks over the yellow caution tape I wrap around my area.
“ hey you know all those bulkheads you spend 5 hours putting exactly where I told you too? The plumber decided to run their lines outside of that so can you come move everything 6 inches?”
It’s why I hate doing basements. Better than sitting at home when it’s -30 in winter but I’d rather be doing anything else lol
We usually try to convince them to do it in 2 steps, frost walls then they rough everything in, then we come back and do the interior walls + bulkheads. But usually there is a third time we go out because one of the trades like hvac or plumbing didn’t rough everything in and we have to go do more bulkheads or patch walls they sawzalled apart.
But that’s residential for you. If it wasn’t that it’s homeowners making changes they should have mentioned months ago and limp dick builders who will not say no to them.
I started off as a carpenter and am now job supe on large residential projects and it seems I do a little bit of everyone's trade if something small comes up that isn't outlined in their scope of work. The "not my job"attitude is real with every trade. job super is mostly being whatever someone else doesn't feel like doing that day
One that doesn't do them enough. I do a set a stairs maybe once a year and I forget half the shit by the time it's to do another. They got calculators and shit for all that now anyways
sorry that was the reply to your question - it was just the first job i could find and I just stuck with it because I actually enjoy building things (most of the time). and its rewarding knowing i'm leaving my legacy all over the city by helping build these structures. I can go walk down my city and see the concrete benches i've built, the planters I help built infront of condominiums, etc. It's a good feeling
Carpenter making 40 an hour? Either youre unioned up in a nice city where 40 ain’t shit or this is fake and gay and anon dreams about handling wood all day.
secondcondary@reddit
The carpenters are always the most chill guys (when they're not complaining about running out of wood)
MyHeadIsFullOfFuck@reddit (OP)
they all smoke weed
secondcondary@reddit
My carpenters didn't smoke weed but one of them rolled his own cigarettes and I thought that was pretty cool
finnicus1@reddit
My grandpa was a steel fixer and he could do it with one hand
PM_MEOttoVonBismarck@reddit
I know a guy that drives a truck and switches gears while rolling at the same time.

Harrison go back to sleep
Pz420@reddit
Wait did you just reveal yourself anon?
MyHeadIsFullOfFuck@reddit (OP)
I smoke weed and used to work in construction
Pz420@reddit
So you’re not a carpenter… right…
MyHeadIsFullOfFuck@reddit (OP)
One of my trades is related to carpentry. I have two trades.
moogleman844@reddit
Is your other trade turning water into wine? If so can you teach me??
CapiCapiBara@reddit
Careful, you wouldn’t want to cross the guy
Eledridan@reddit
The other trade is rolling?
Fanferric@reddit
Is the other trade getting your head full of fuck?
MyHeadIsFullOfFuck@reddit (OP)
No, that's only for the internet.
frootcock@reddit
I feel called out
nerm2k@reddit
They should probably use less wood for arts and crafts then.
finnicus1@reddit
Can confirm, my dad is a carpenter (I love you Dad!!!!)
Carthage_haditcoming@reddit
Or complaining about the mess the electrician left his workplace in.
octofeline@reddit
To be fair running out of wood seems like a big problem if your job is making things out of wood
zombieGenm_0x68@reddit
that sounds based, maybe i should become a carpenter lol
avagrantthought@reddit
The trades that you should also check out are HVAC, electrician and plumbing
slugfive@reddit
Plumbing occasionally has to deal with shit work though. Literal.
boisterile@reddit

It pays so fucking well though. People will pay anything to have someone deal with the literal shit work.
Kenobus69@reddit
You also get always fucked by the hot and horny housewives. At least based on the documentaries I watched.
KarlPc167@reddit
"Documentaries" right
LanceKnight00@reddit
HVAC and Electric are elite. Working as a sparky has been very tough but equally rewarding.
avagrantthought@reddit
anything more you want to share as a sparky?
Merry_Dankmas@reddit
Is welding still a big cash cow? I considered getting into it a long time ago cause it seemed to pay very very well. Not sure if that's still the case anymore though.
ThatGuyFrom720@reddit
Underwater welding pays huge. In my area “normal” welding still pays pretty good but not amazing.
karmadontcare44@reddit

Yes anything would be better than what you’re currently doing if becoming a carpenter would be an improvement.
But that’s kinda true with everything. Improve your skills and improve your life anon.
Ambitious-Regular-57@reddit
Residential HVAC is chill af and can be very highly paid. Electrical work is not super hard on your body as well, depending on what you do I suppose
ColumbusJewBlackets@reddit
Carpentry tends to be one of the lower paid skilled trades.
SipoteQuixote@reddit
Honestly the only trade that doesnt fuck up my work. I usually show up when someone fucked up natural stone and what not. Everyone but the carpenter walks over the yellow caution tape I wrap around my area.
Third_MAW@reddit
And on the opposite end as a carpenter it feels like everyone tries their hardest to fuck with us
SkipperMcNuts@reddit
Was a laborer, now an operator. Can confirm, loved fucking with carpenters.
boisterile@reddit
It's not your fault they unloaded 3,000 trees worth of lumber exactly where the next 4 column footings are supposed to go :)

Arts and crafts?! Sounds like anon is on his way to a girlfriend.
Twitfout@reddit
Am commercial carpenter, can confirm
Inconspicuous_Shart@reddit
What carpenter has to google how to make stringers and steps for stairs?
Twitfout@reddit
One that doesn't do them enough. I do a set a stairs maybe once a year and I forget half the shit by the time it's to do another. They got calculators and shit for all that now anyways
avagrantthought@reddit
Why did you choose that over HVAC or electrical
Twitfout@reddit
Actually tried electrical first - and honestly was just a job that landed in my lap first.
avagrantthought@reddit
So why did you switch over to carpenter?
Twitfout@reddit
sorry that was the reply to your question - it was just the first job i could find and I just stuck with it because I actually enjoy building things (most of the time). and its rewarding knowing i'm leaving my legacy all over the city by helping build these structures. I can go walk down my city and see the concrete benches i've built, the planters I help built infront of condominiums, etc. It's a good feeling
SirChasm@reddit
Concrete benches? I thought carpenters worked with wood.
Twitfout@reddit
You gotta have something that holds the concrete in. That's where the wood comes in
_lvlsd@reddit
why not just more concrete
Darkblue57@reddit
We should just concrete the whole earth.
Perfectly level.
avagrantthought@reddit
That's great
How's the pay ?
Twitfout@reddit
$42 CAD an hour, but I'm sure in the states that pay is better.
Merry_Dankmas@reddit
Shit, that's $30 USD an hour. That's still a really healthy hourly wage. There's people with masters degrees who make less than that.
mc-big-papa@reddit
Nothing will ever beat knowing you left a ticking time bomb with the sketchy wiring you left behind.
b3tarded@reddit
