I've looked into Mastodon/Lemmy/Fediverse a few times. Mastodon I've enjoyed, but for better or worse BlueSky has been more successful on getting more people involved. Lemmy I'm not a fan of. I think the intention is for each Lemmy instance to be the equivalent of a different subreddit, but instead each instance is more or less it's own incarnation of Digg (old Digg). Just general news an politics you can get everywhere else, but every one an even worse echo chamber. There are no niche communities for specific games or movies, or shows, or sports, or sports teams, or cities, or hobbies, etc...

It takes people to build these communities.

Yeah, centralized platforms always have it easier to do that.
Haven't experienced that.
True. The threadiverse is still pretty small with about 60000 users. But you can always start niche community and usually find some people who are interested in the same topic.

I have tried 7 times and each time I tried to engage with communities and was left with silence. With BlueSky and Reddit I get plenty of engagement when I make comments or posts. On Mastodon it felt like speaking in a dark room.
Maybe I just did it wrong. But I just could not figure out how to get engagement.
Skavau@reddit
What did you post to?
tricky-dick-nixon69@reddit
I joined a cyber security community, one which had over 100k members. Lots of activity from users. But things I posted relevant to the community either wasn't being seen or there's a real chance I just wasn't posting anything anyone found interesting. But if I'm using a platform simply for viewing cybersec related news, there's publications and other forums I prefer to read.
Like I said, every time I've tried I always felt like I was missing something or not understanding how it's supposed to be interacted with.

Reddit is supposed to be private though

It's changed but 10 years ago people didn't want anyone in real life to know their username. It made reddit a very honest platform but now it's all propaganda

ngl, fediverse is a gem

I desperately wanted to like the fediverse but after that reddit black out a while back it's where all the ultra turbo redditoids went. Have a mild disagreement and suddenly you're banned from 20 communities, banned from several instances altogether, and all your comments in those places are removed, and you're being spammed with a mods dozen or so alt accounts
Alive_Werewolf_40@reddit
This is blatantly untrue
IlIIllIIIlllIlIlI@reddit
This is literally my experience. Thanks for trying to call me a liar, but it's quite literally my personal experience I lived through.
Skavau@reddit
Interesting edit. I don't suppose the communities and instance you got banned from was dbzer0.com, perchance?
AnonomousWolf@reddit
Hasn't been my experience at all, you might have joined a weird instance
What happened exactly?
whirled-news@reddit
Yeah, that sounds like Hexbear.
burneraccounttwo@reddit
Lol what?
upon-taken@reddit
My experience is not as bad as yours but the community that I joined isn’t active at all, most recent posts are from 2 3 months ago with like 10 upvotes despite having like 1000 people in that community. And people don’t ever take second opinions, it’s always must be Linux good open sauce good, if you say anything other than that, you get instant downvotes. It’s like in early beta or something.
Apprehensive_Hat_982@reddit
Reddit is usually the same :D
Die4Ever@reddit
I have you upvoted but you're still only at 1 point lol
Die4Ever@reddit
Which community?
linkenski@reddit
Yeah. This is exactly why I prefer having several enclosed social medias. You can find the one that isn't infested by weirdos.
Die4Ever@reddit
that was a long time ago, give it another try
maybe try https://piefed.zip/ or https://discuss.online/
IlIIllIIIlllIlIlI@reddit
I'll look into those, thanks
stizzoardchog2@reddit
let's all be weird together in the fediverse
Apprehensive_Hat_982@reddit
Why weird? I joined add it pretty chill.
Hot_Ease_4895@reddit
Whom owns the fediverse?
DouglasJFalcon@reddit
nobody
It's great
Die4Ever@reddit
it's like Bittorrent or email, no one owns it, which is the best part
