Correcting a audible mispronunciation - if it's a word they've learned from either reading (never heard it out loud) or because English isn't a first language - pointing out they've mispronounced it just to make yourself feel superior is a d1ck move.

Nah, hard disagree, I have been corrected on life-long mispronunciations and I am always thankful, I'd rather know!! I have also worked with several folk whose first language was not English who actively asked to be corrected in those situations. There are obviously good and bad ways to offer the feedback and it depends on context

I’m happy to be corrected. The real issue is the default seems to be someone does this to make themselves feel superior. Bullshit. In a lot of cases it’s done to help someone else out. Yea, there are some people who just love to punch down but I’d like to think most people want to be positive and helpful.

A mate of mine now lives in Norway, where their pronunciation of the word emoji is different to ours (short o sound, like in bog). First time he said it (on a Zoom call during Covid) we all fell about laughing, although we had all been drinking heavily.

I don’t think everyone necessarily does it to feel superior; as someone who’s been corrected a couple of times on the pronunciation of words I’d only read before, I really appreciated it and didn’t feel condescended to at all. It took seconds for them to say “oh, that’s actually pronounced eh-PI-toh-mee”, and that was that. Now I know. I’m a hypocrite, though, because I don’t personally correct people’s pronunciation for fear of it being taken the wrong way.

What for? Seems to be just an inclusion rule that's been made up like if you're colour blind you can't play snooker. If you're dyslexic you can't play darts because you don't know how to add up the numbers. So what if whoever hangs it upside down isn't the genius you are? So what if they struggle to understand how to fly it correctly or understand why they just wanna be a part of it so why not let them? It's like wearing a band t shirt and someone saying you're not allowed because you can't name five songs.

I wish I had a quid for every time I've typed this one out on Reddit or anywhere else, but here's mine: People who don't like Americanisms and don't know the definition of the word "get" are often very annoyed by the phrase "can I get", because they think it only means "fetch for oneself". You'll see them smugly saying "no you can't, but I'll get it for you" and so forth. "Get" is actually defined as "come to have, or receive", so there's absolutely nothing wrong with this usage - apart from the fact that it should probably be "may I get". TLDR: people who smugly criticise "can I get" are factually incorrect.

My mum has this thing about people saying "I was sat down, and then this happened..." She will shout at the TV,"it's SITTING!" For one thing it doesn't account for regional dialects, but I just find it so incredibly boring and pedantic, and it puts me on edge. You understood what they meant, didn't you?!

My mum has a few of these, the most irritating is she will always correct me "And I" if I say "And me". I'm in my 40's and this has been going on since childhood. Notwithstanding that we hail from a South London council estate where people weren't renowned for their eloquence. Honestly, you'd think we lived in the stockbroker belt and I had been corrupted by hanging out with a bad lot.
