What's the process like for adopting orphans from overseas conflicts?

If anyone's had experience of this, I'd appreciate your tips and advice. I've seen too many infants pulled out of rubble these past few weeks to not look into this.

The vast majority of those children have families - parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents, cousins etc - who could look after them. Worldwide, 80% of children in orphanages have one or two living parents - and more will have extended families. International adoption is hugely problematic for many reasons - not least that there are numerous cases of parents being lied to about the nature of adoption - for example that they're just being sent abroad to school. Limited education and literacy can mean they are hugely vulnerable to this sort of exploitation. In some cases, it's little more than human trafficking. It's also hugely complicated for the child's own experience - I suggest that you go and listen to the often complex voices of adult adoptees - domestic and international - before going down this path. It's not all sunshine, roses and grateful orphans. If you want to do good, then invariably the most cost effective way of doing good is to keep kids with their families through poverty alleviation programmes.
