One of the coolest gifts my wife has ever given me was a copy of Secret of Mana, I was completely unaware of it back in the day but still have my OG SNES still working so was amazing to fire it up and enjoy that way.
I worked at Walmart at the time.. it was nearly a bloodbath when they brought them out. Saw a kid grab one and jump through the bike racks to get away from the adults. Was wild at the time.
When I was a wee sprout of naughty but eight short years, I was at the South Coast Plaza, though far from the events as they unfolded, when that old lady became the first victim in what would become known as "The Cabbage Patch Riots".
When we heard about it later that day on the news, we were flabbergasted that anyone would be willing to kill or die for a fucking toy.
I would not wish working Christmas Rush at Wal-Mart on my worst enemy. Particularly in the Tickle-Me Elmo year. I was thanking my lucky stars that my first kid was still in the oven and I was going to miss out on that particular craze. Just hearing that damned thing in the commercials made me want to bore out my eardrums with an ice auger.
My parents somehow found me a Spanish cabbage patch kid that year. The box and papers were all in Spanish and I remember thinking how cool that was and how unique Isabella was.

Me too. I bought my Super Nintendo with Super Mario World from Toys R' Us, same goes for my PlayStation 2.
KeyboardMunkeh@reddit
The biggest memory of Toys'R'Us I have is saving up my birthday money and using it to buy Secret of Mana for the SNES from them.
Secret of Mana remains one of my favorite games of all time.

It's one of the better games ever made. For any platform, not just SNES.

Christmas shopping, I am assuming, by the date.

I'm more impressed they found a Tickle Me Elmo.
Hilsam_Adent@reddit
At retail price, no less. Some of them were selling for ten times that.

Although I miss holiday shopping, I do not miss the craziness of people crowding outside or trampling each other to spend money.

As an adult now, I think it would have been a hard choice between giving a kid the world's best present & pocketing $300.
Hilsam_Adent@reddit
It's not every day you can claim a 1,000% ROI. Tax-free, no less.

That was my thought too. "They found a Tickle Me Elmo in 1996!?"
JeremyJaLa@reddit
Santa must have dropped it.

Come to Canada. I went to Toys R Us last week. It's still the same joyful place
GoramReaver@reddit (OP)
Oh man I might cry walking into there

"Come for the toy stores, stay for the poutine, pass out because of the beer" should be our new tourism slogan, lol
FoppyDidNothingWrong@reddit
That would be like paying $60 for Elmo now.
