Which soundtrack?

Posted by ManicOppressyv@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 242 comments

And no "The Crow." That's the obvious one. For me Pump Up the Volume has to just barely edge out Singles just due to variety and obscurity.

Aw hells yeah! Circle Jerks, Iggy Pop, Burning Sensations... Man, I love that movie. Probably seen it close to 100 times since I was 8 years old and still find something new in it every time. So many details / classic lines and Emilio Estevez's best ever performance.

Both are great soundtracks but Pump Up the Volume was influential and formative for my entire taste in music. After seeing the movie and buying the soundtrack I started actively seeking out alternative radio stations, going to local shows and finding little-known bands based on recs from record store employees that had a look. I STILL pull up Wave of Mutilation to play anytime I'm feeling down. PUtV changed my life.

Can I get an honorable mention for Judgement Night? This was before rock/rap was even cool. From Wikipedia: Judgment Night is the soundtrack to the 1993 film of the same name. It was released on September 14, 1993, through Immortal Records and Epic Soundtrax and was produced by many of the album's performers. Every song on the soundtrack was a collaboration between hip-hop artists and rock/metal artists. The album peaked at #17 on the Billboard 200 and spawned four singles, "Fallin'" by Teenage Fanclub and De La Soul, "Another Body Murdered" by Faith No More and Boo-Yaa T.R.I.B.E., "Just Another Victim" by Helmet and House of Pain, and "Judgment Night" by Biohazard and Onyx. And oh so many more

Judgement Night wins, I still listen to it. It has Sonic Youth with Cypress Hill, those are two of my favorite bands smooshed together into a l’il stoner sandwich of a song.

Pump Up the Volume 10000%. I have both the DVD and CD. This movie/soundtrack was my holy grail. The only thing that would make the soundtrack perfect is if they included both the Beastie Boys ā€œThe Scenarioā€ and Leonard Cohen’s ā€œEverybody Knowsā€. I love Concrete Blonde’s cover but also love the original.

Beavis and Butthead Do America. I wasn't even really a fan of the show, but bought the movie soundtrack just based on the track listing. I listened to the fuck out of that cd and knew it front to back long before I ever even saw the movie. Still listen to it today.

I always loved the techno/punk vibes from the Trainspotting soundtrack, and that's not a typical genre for me (punk yes, techno not so much) 180° - Dirty Dancing. We wore the shit out of that cassette as it was something my whole family could listen to.

Saw PUTV summer before senior year. Came back to school and told my friends how much I liked it. They told me that was a *freak* movie and that there must be something wrong with me for liking it. These guys, they’d rather watch Top Gun on VHS. Learned a lot about myself and my ā€œfriendsā€ that year. By the time it came for them to mock me for liking Singles they were largely in my rear view mirror. The answer to the question is Pump Up The Volume, obviously. The Singles soundtrack had the feel of a $500 flannel from Saks Fifth Avenue.
