Which episode is your guilty pleasure?

For me it’s The Royale. I know it’s trashy but there’s just something about it, and the interaction between Riker, Data and Worf, that I love.
WhoMe28332@reddit
I don’t feel the least bit guilty about The Royale. It’s the most TOS episode of TNG. I think it feels like a short story from a classic sci fi magazine. It’s just a genuinely good episode.
Bushido_Seppuku@reddit
Same episode, same reasons. I love the idea and the concept. I love the casino characters. I love the period piece that's anachronistic.
It's a really great episode of the twilight zone... in color.
Extension-Pepper-271@reddit
The scene in "The Royale" (not this clip) where Data says, "Baby needs a new pair of shoes" and then throws the dice without looking is comedic gold
hollow4hollow@reddit
Data is so cute in this episode 😭
Felosele@reddit
That happens ten seconds before this post’s clip: https://youtu.be/F-oHivrDmVI

Every craps table I’m at, I hear it in my head:

POTATO_OF_MY_EYE@reddit
Data learned an important lesson that day: when the train comes in, everybody rides
Alternative-Pace7493@reddit
It’s a skip for me-but then I never got into the original series.
chronofluxtoaster@reddit
“Liaisons” was like that for me. Aliens encounter humans for the first time. One takes a bathroom paperback and recreates “Earth” as a badly-written casino hellscape for the survivor. The other aliens take the diary from a crash survivor and send ambassadors to understand love, eating and aggression. All very good TOS themes and sci-fi tropes.
GainHealMark@reddit
I love that episode, though it scared me as a kid, especially when they find the skeleton in the room.
YT-Deliveries@reddit
I've always wondered if Richie was able to bang the various casino simulacra.
dphoenix1@reddit
I have always wondered what year the Royale was supposed to take place. Tex said he had a 91 Cadillac “with only 80,000 miles on it” as though that is supposed to be impressive, so maybe the early to mid 2000s?
YT-Deliveries@reddit
The episode says that the ship they find was from the mid-21st century, so if they place the novel in the 2010s or so it'd be pretty feasible.
WhoMe28332@reddit
I think you’re probably right. It’s a really weird mixture of eras. But, after all, it’s a bad novel.
YT-Deliveries@reddit
Yeah The Royale is legitimately one of the best Star Trek episodes.
buntopolis@reddit
Baby needs a new pair of shoes.
LightofJah@reddit
If were talking “trashy”, The Price with Devinoni Ral is my guilty pleasure episode, I love the ambience
helenen85@reddit
Ah man I love devinoni ral, can’t blame Tori for that one. Or Beverly for her thing for that terrorist.
majin_melmo@reddit
Any episode with Q, Lt. Barclay, Lore, etc.

I hate worf and Alexander but I like a fistful of data's
Sasquatch1729@reddit
Home alone on a starship (Rascals). Also Die Hard on a starship (Starship Mine).
captnfraulein@reddit
i love Rascals as well! the cast for the kids is excellent, especially Jean Luc. and i love that Alexander is invited in on the action too 😁
houndsoflu@reddit
Him constantly rubbing his hair as a kid and then rubbing his head after they get put back as an adult never fails to make me chuckle.
servonos89@reddit
I loved that young Whoopi is the same actress that played young Whoopi in Sister Act

captnfraulein@reddit
same! that is so cool
Arminius80@reddit
My favorite part of Starship Mine is Data lurking behind a pillar mimicking Hutch's facial expressions while be tries to learn how to "small talk." Cracks me up.
GainHealMark@reddit
I love Rascals; kid Picard throwing a tantrum to see Riker, and their cheesy smiles and hug and “He’s my #1 dad!” Also Ro getting a chance to be a child and play was really sweet.
StepEnvironmental791@reddit
"The Arsenal of Freedom." and all Dixon Hill/ almost all holodeck episodes, especially the Dr. Moriarty one!
lonely_nipple@reddit
Anything with Q. I know he's kind of a love/hate character but he's just fun.
StepEnvironmental791@reddit
Agree, Q is absolute gold
indoor-only-cat@reddit
Genesis. I love it. It’s ridiculous.
StepEnvironmental791@reddit
One of my absolute favourites! Also IMO the best performance by counselor Troi
angryapplepanda@reddit
I legit love Genesis. It's a very "TNG" TNG episode. Maybe the most "TNG" episode of all time.
kaiser_mcbear@reddit
Genesis allowed is not! Is planet forbidden!
45runs@reddit (OP)
I just looked it up to remember which episode it is and never realised it was directed by Gates McFadden

MissVespite@reddit
I don't like The Royale, but for some reason I can watch Data's Day over and over through the years as a comfort thing.
goettel@reddit
These are things I do understand.
Marlee0024@reddit
That episode makes us realize how much we love Data for his simple flat innocence.
LLAPSpork@reddit
Is Data’s Day considered bad? Because that’s one of my favourite episodes ever.
Triad64@reddit
Reddit voted it as Data’s best episode recently.
MissVespite@reddit
Awe good
MissVespite@reddit
I don’t think it is considered bad, but it is considered heavy fluff in comparison to more serious eps. I think it’s a good mix though personally because of the romulan spy.
LLAPSpork@reddit
Huh. Interesting. To me it’s truly one of the highlights of the whole series (and TNG is my favourite series of all time — or at the very least tied with DS9). It’s fun either way some amazing character moments. Yeah it’s not the type of deep that Inner Light is or the type of serious that Chain of Command is. But I’ll still pick Data’s Day over those most of the time. Admittedly it’s also a comfort thing but I think that it’s a genuinely great episode.
MissVespite@reddit
Big agree! I think it is a great episode to introduce folks to the vibe of TNG as well, but that was a controversial take in previous threads
loglady17@reddit
I LOVE Data’s Day
RepulsiveCare264@reddit
One of my favourite episodes was “Frame of Mind”. The psychological warfare they played on Riker was great. Also “Schisms” was another great one.
darth_sudo@reddit
Lilith from Cheers propositioning Riker because she has an alien kink never gets old.
RepulsiveCare264@reddit
That was awesome! 😂
DoiliesAplenty@reddit
So good.
Notgoodatfakenames2@reddit
A matter ot time. Matt is just messing with the crew for 40 min.
Remote-Pie-3152@reddit
Oh it’s definitely “Up the Long Ladder” for me. I can see why Colm Meaney nearly walked off in protest, it’s TNG’s second most racist episode, but as someone part Irish I find it hilarious in a “so bad it’s good” sort of way.
gaiusjozka@reddit
Even the clunkiest episodes of Tng usually have some small redeeming quality. I love Picard's line: "Sometimes you just have to bow to the absurd."
deenuhtzyousay@reddit
One of his best 👌
DrJimbot@reddit
I really can’t believe that years later in Voyager they did TWO horrible stage Irish episodes. Really should have known better by then.
Doctor_Titties@reddit
They did better in the Fair Haven episodes because Kate Mulgrew has Irish ancestry and didnt let them make everyone a drunken rube. Micheal is an actual good and well fleshed out character and while there is a town drunk Thats more of a small village stereotype than an Irish one.
DrJimbot@reddit
Well, they didn’t do much better
Raterus_@reddit
And Riker is more than happy to provide his "seed" to the right woman.
loglady17@reddit
Oh it’s so bad and offensive, but I laugh the whole time. I watched it with my very proud to be Irish dad and he was horrified.
strangway@reddit
The line at the end “Send in the clones!” is a play on the song “Send in the Clowns” from A Little Night Music by Sondheim. At least that’s how I interpreted it as I busted out laughing once I actually knew of the musical.
moktira@reddit
"Clones?"
"Clones?"
"Clones."
It's a shame about the awful Hollywood-Irish accents and terrible stereotypes, cause the last half of the episode is great.
DrSuperWho@reddit
One of my favorites!
Conscious_Low7358@reddit
Q-Pid. One of the best Q episodes with great humor.
regeya@reddit
I love Fistful of Datas and I don't understand why so many people hate it.
Retinoid634@reddit
When Q becomes human. The end when he celebrates with the mariachi band and the cigars magical appearance in Picard’s and Riker’s mouths. And when they yell at him , Q tells Riker he was more fun before the beard.
JayEdgarHooverCar@reddit
The Dauphin.
It is not a good episode. Average writing at best. Acting is sub-par. It has all the hallmarks of a cringy season two episode.
But I absolutely adore Wesley’s cute little love story with the princess. Not to mention Worf’s rivalry with her bodyguard. I have even come to love the really low quality creature effects in that episode.
Retinoid634@reddit
I love the grudging respect at the end with the bodyguard
Head_Photograph9572@reddit
Do you know what the odds are on a five card charlie?!
Lyra_Endless@reddit
I unfortunately cannot remember the name but definitely the one where cowboy Worf, Alexander and Troi go up against cowboy holodeck Datas. It's so dumb and every Worf line makes me laugh like crazy

GainHealMark@reddit
That was such a fun episode! “Counsellor-“ “Durango! Call me Durango!” “Counsellor Durango-“
I still have all my action figures from that episode.
lonely_nipple@reddit
This is the one I was looking for, partly cause I wasn't sure I remembered the name of it right. 😆 I love how many roles he plays.
neon_meate@reddit
My only comment was going to be: You're as handy with a shootin'-iron as you are with a lady's heart!
Easy-Anxiety-258@reddit
Me to! I love westerns and I love Star Trek. You like Spectre of the Gun from TOS?
Phoenix_of_Anarchy@reddit
Masks. The episode itself is good, not spectacular, but Brent Spiner in it is amazing. And it helps that the premise feels original and fun.
I also really like DS9’s similar episode Dramatis Personae.
SarcasmCupcakes@reddit
I love that episode, it’s so ridiculous.
RW-Firerider@reddit
Same, love the episode
kathakana@reddit
Brent describes his acting as preposterous in that episode. Apparently he had to pull characters out of his behind with no sleep because he was the only regular cast member in the episode before and they got no break between filming episodes. He talks about it at a convention, I think its one on his own where he auctions of a bear at the end (the convention not the episode).
Haunt_Fox@reddit
Yes, it's one of the few times it feels like they're really exploring the unknown here.
Honest_Wishbone_8666@reddit

Genesis. Caveman Riker wrecking the fish tank? Come on now.
Few-Improvement-5655@reddit
I see so many people say that this episode is their guilty pleasure that we should just admit that it's not actually bad.
I remember watching it, thought it was entertaining enough with some fun moments and I've been continually surprised that people keep talking about it like it's total dogshit.
toochaos@reddit
It's just not one of the great episodes. It's not stunning or philosophical It's not racist nor does it have any character growth. It's likely in the bottom 50 percent of episodes for most shows that would make it trash. for tng it's a fun episode that people enjoy.
Shawnk_69@reddit
Well said.
Patchy_Face_Man@reddit
The Royale creeped me out when I was a kid. Perfect combination of season one/two budget, recycled TOS scripts and ideas and Sam Anderson just always was unnerving to me.
I skip a lot of Season 1 at this point. I will always watch Conspiracy. I’ve also come to enjoy Gambit. It’s so silly and even Picard is like “this is getting ridiculous.”
toochaos@reddit
I agree it feels creepy but not sinister, alien and absurd.
GainHealMark@reddit
I was watching the new Matlock and Sam Anderson was in it and I was like “what do I know this guy from??” And yeah, it was from his guest appearance in almost 40 year old episode of TNG.
Patchy_Face_Man@reddit
He was good in a season of Justified. And I totally forgot about Perfect Strangers.
gowahoo@reddit
Now that you says rhat, it creeped me out too. As a little child I had a deep seated fear of anything death related and even though I was a tween when I watched this episode, the remains of the astronaut really got to me.
MissVespite@reddit
Love Gambit!
darth_sudo@reddit
Fistful of Datas. Watch it every time it’s on P+
OhioVsEverything@reddit
There's a bunch of episodes in season 2 that I love probably more than most episodes.
I honestly don't get to hate for season 2.
You got the episode where they're doing the war games, you got the episode where la forge gets kidnapped by those space dummies, you got riker going to the Klingon ship. To me those are just as much classics as measure of a man.
45runs@reddit (OP)
Yeah agreed, love season 2
Professor-Arty-Farty@reddit
The Royale has one of my favorite lines.
Commander William T. Riker: Looks like the poor devil died in his sleep.
Lieutenant Worf: What a terrible way to die.
45runs@reddit (OP)
Yeah, love that Worf line. Similar to when he’s staring at the crazy Mick Fleetwood creatures in Manhunt and says: “What a handsome race.”
No_Supermarket_3462@reddit
i love hide and Q, iQ! Riker is an awesome concept i wish they had done more with

TakeMeBackToCA831@reddit
I love Barclay, he's a wreck and I love it lol. Hollow Pursuits is also ridiculous but love it too.
secondtaunting@reddit
This episode made me think long and hard about what the best book to be reading while kidnapped by aliens who then build you a world from it. The only thing I decided was no Stephen King.😂
CMDR_ACE209@reddit
Recently, the Culture series by Ian M. Banks has superseded Star Trek as my favorite Utopia.
Worldly-Ad-9303@reddit
I love the culture series, they are defo my favourite sci-fi books, such a shame he passed away. And I agree, it would be amazing to live in that universe, although if you did I guess it would just seem normal
secondtaunting@reddit
I’ll check it out.
Haunt_Fox@reddit
Omg, imagine having a Bobiverse books on you, and they turn you into a Von Neumann probe. 😹
secondtaunting@reddit
Ohh. Yeah but if they did it wrong you’d go insane. And I definitely don’t have the engineering chops to be a Bob. I just read Children of Time and I also wouldn’t want to hang out with super intelligent giant spiders. It’s really hard to pin down a good book to live in. Most of them are driven by some kind of crisis, so you’d not want to live through that. I’d do Lord of the rings, but I wouldn’t want to battle orcs or Nazgûl. I know! I’ll pick Murderbot. I can live on preservation station with some space hippies.
mcgrst@reddit
Grab a star trek book and keep it with you at all times!
secondtaunting@reddit
Ah, that would be a nice circle there lol. If I could pick any tv show to live in, it would definitely be Star Trek. I had that conversation once with a bunch of people at a party. servonos89@reddit
I always remember that episode for being the one that showed a Galaxy Class being able to fit inside a Spacedock type star base because they didn’t use the concept for it docking via umbilical on the outer rim in favour of reusing footage from the movies and superimposing it in. Blew up the size of Spacedock to a huge degree that’s essentially stuck since.
Yes fuck you I am good at parties.
john-treasure-jones@reddit
The music during the docking and undocking sequences was also Peak TNG!

Also, Riker's face when he's told that like 15 holodeck programs are playing at once is priceless. Riker has the best reaction faces in the entire franchise.
SpurnedSprocket@reddit
Handful of Datas. I know that it’s yet another case of the Holodeck malfunctioning, but it’s still just a great Worf episode.
Sumthin-Sumthin44692@reddit
Masks. 100%. What a goofy episode, but I love how much Brent Spiner got to play with it.
GainHealMark@reddit
And yet he thinks he didn’t do a good job because he was just coming off of “Thine Own Self” and felt he didn’t have the energy to put in a good performance for “Masks”. I mean, if “Masks” is Brent Spiner on an off day, where is this man’s Emmy?? Just the scene where Ihat is found by Masaka is chilling.
MisterTomServo@reddit
Q-Pid and Fistful of Datas, and Royale.
Frankly, I don't consider them "guilty pleasures" - I just think of them as fun, entertaining episodes. Not everything has to be about 4 lights.

Cause and Effect, and Tapestry.
GainHealMark@reddit
I think I’ve watched Cause and Effect more times than any other episode, which is funny since it’s essentially the same few scenes repeated slightly differently for an hour. But I love those spooky, bottle episodes that feel like Twilight Zone stories.
Tapestry is a wonderful episode. But my favourite part is Q the delivery boy: “Flowers! Is there a John Luck Pyecard here?”
Foulmouthedleon@reddit
"The Game"
What's not to love? Ashley Judd. The entire ship against Wesley...

LLAPSpork@reddit
The Naked Now. My god I laugh my ass off every time I watch it and I love every second of it.
GainHealMark@reddit
The Naked Now is hilarious, it’s just a weird choice for a second episode in a new series. Not knowing much about how the characters usually act, seeing them suddenly being drunk and horny is funny on the first watch, but hilarious as a rerun. I especially love Data leaning on nothing and falling over.
majin_melmo@reddit
Definitely one of my all-time faves, poor Riker trying to hold it all together by the end. My Mom and I still quote it all the time: “I don’t understand their humor either” and “Not now doctor!” among other gems 😂
Blueknightsoul47@reddit
I like royale as well. Laughed my ass off at data’s mannerisms. I’d say my guilty pleasure episode would be the ensign episode. It was nice seeing the point of view of the crew who weren’t bridge crew.

bvrdiee@reddit
The Royale is my favorite episode. It’s so much fun to watch and feels like it slots some comedy and whimsy into TNG. It feels like an homage to TOS in a lot of ways.
TexasTokyo@reddit
It feels like a leftover TOS script, tbh. The original story was supposed to be closer to "The Prisoner" than the sort of campy show that was finally produced. I would have really liked to see that version, tbh.
robotatomica@reddit
“The Prisoner” as in the British tv show from the 60s? I’d never heard of it before but it’s come up twice in the past couple months, and it sounds like I really need to give it a watch!

Fist Full of Data. I know it's a very dumb episode but it's my favourite. I'm a sucker for a western and I love Brent actually being able to show emotions. It's so much fun!
need_a_poopoo@reddit
When TNG was on first run in the UK, the first episode I saw on BBC2 was The Royale and I decided "Nope, not for me". I didn't come back to try TNG again from the start until after I'd been hooked by DS9 (at season 3) and then subsequently Voyager.
GainHealMark@reddit
Genesis. I don’t care if “de-evolution isn’t a thing” and “Barclay couldn’t have become a spider” and “the cause of the whole thing is ludicrous”. I love that episode. It’s as close to a Halloween episode of TNG as we’d ever get, and I still remember watching it as a kid and having my eyes covered half the time. Just wish it had been a two-parter.

In addition to The Royale, A Fistful of Datas makes me happy, as well as Qpid.
Putting the well established characters into ridiculous "fictitious" situations is fun, I guess.

The Royale was my first episode and it started an obsession over Trek that’s been going on for near 30 years now

Royale or Masks.

Genesis. It's beyond silly. But it's great fun. Picard climbing the inside of the turbo lift for safety is wonderful.

I like the royal as well. It’s basically a shortened cliff notes abbreviated version of 2001.

Nah, The Royale isn't trashy at all. It knows exactly the story it wants to tell, and tells it in a well paced, fun way. For the early seasons, it's a highlight.

The Big Goodbye.
Also like the Royale!

You should have used the revolving door scene. The way it’s filmed makes it look like they don’t know how such a door works. That part makes me laugh the hardest.
