Do you hire people as part of your job? If so, is it obvious when applicants are using AI to write their applications, and how do you deal with it?

There's two flavours of AI application: First, the bad ones, who have just dumped out the first thing the ChatGPT gave them without proofreading it. These people's CVs are usually bad, contradictory or just strange, and they don't get very far. Second, people who have clearly used AI, but have also clearly spent some time curating what the AI gave them. AI-written text has a certain "feel" to it that's *usually* recognisable (though rarely it can sneak by!) even if the text is all technically correct. Use of AI is not *necessarily* a problem for the job application, as long as the text we've been given is accurate and readable, but it creates a secondary problem: it means I now know nothing about the person's writing ability. A good CV is (among other things) an indicator that people can spell, can format a document, can write a competent sentence. A lot of young, GenZ graduates I meet entering the workforce - and for some reason it's mostly the male ones, though I couldn't tell you why - don't seem to understand that I don't just want staff who can produce a document when requested. I want staff who have the skills to *write* the document, themselves, without AI assistance. AI isn't bad, but a lot of the governing bodies we submit our reports to don't allow AI-generated reports. We have to hand-write them. And telling me how "AI is the future" and "In ten years nobody will write their own reports" does nothing to change that. I still need *you* to *physically write this yourself, now*, if you want to work here. ... And AI-written CVs and applications have sometimes indicated that this will be a problem for those applicants. tl;dr good AI CVs are fine but identify you as an AI power user, which might impact your percieved suitability negatively. If you're applying for a job that involves lots of writing, maybe write your own CV for that one.
