Has anyone been victim to the beer 52 subscription?

Trying to cancel today. Oh my word it is a pain in the ass. Emailed in and maybe wrongfully lying saying I’m hard of hearing so I’m unable to call. Now waiting for a response hopefully it works. If not I’ll be sat on the phone with a representative for an hour I suppose.

Was laughing with my wife about this earlier today as it happens. I signed up in 2020 and only paid shipping for my first order and cancelled straight away. However they continued to send me a box every month for over a year and only stopped when I missed a delivery twice and it was returned to sender so I done quite well out of them for £1.99

Managed to just cancel Wine52 subscription by persisting with the ‘I still want to cancel’ and ‘prefer not to call’ options on the online account - have to go through about 10 pages of ‘can we tempt you?’ discount offers but eventually can do online without having to call

I emailed them and said I wanted to cancel, and that I did not like the predatory practised employed to keep people subscribed and the hurdles presented. I got a response saying it was set to cancel before my next payment but that I could still use the credit on my account towards stuff and that hopefully this would change my mind. Really wasn't that difficult. That was for the beer52 and wine52 after getting the freebies in the first month and cancelling within a week.

I once cancelled as I was put on medication that I wasn't allowed to drink on, so that ended it quite quickly. The second time (I know, I'm silly) I just told them I was moving abroad, and they cancelled it without any further questions 😂 Hopefully there won't be a third time 😂

I emailed them two days ago to cancel and since then have been bombarded with phone calls from a mobile number that appears (according to Google) to be from beer/wine/whisky52. So yesterday I emailed them with a further data removal request which they responded to within a minute. Will see what happens now!

Just cancelled mine over the phone and it took 7 mins to do. I did call instantly at 09:00 when they open Wouldn’t have bothers ordering if I knew I had to cancel over the phone. They told me they stopped online cancellation due to people abusing free codes yet they have had problem for 5+ years now it seems 🤔 Scummy tactic for sure considering I got this code from myprotein as a free reward.

I just cancelled mine. I was annoyed I had to call them to cancel and came across the many posts on here about how difficult it is to cancel so I was dreading it to be honest but it wasn't overly bad. I did message their support last night but haven't had a response so far so called today and it took about 3 minutes of listening to advertising and then a 2 minute chat and slight retention work but it didn't seem overly pushy in my mind. Nearly 5 minutes on the phone and he said thats it, he's cancelled it for me. Checked my emails and it's confirmed to be cancelled. I do think they should make it so you can cancel online but it wasn't as bad as I was expecting to cancel over the phone either going by other posts so maybe things have changed. One click to unsubscrube from their marketing emails too as I received one straight away on cancelling and getting the confirmation. Hope it helps others

Yes you’re definitely not alone. I’ve just been through a very similar experience with Beer52, and the cancellation process was far harder than it should have been. The company insists on phone calls and multiple steps, which is totally unnecessary for a simple cancellation. A couple of things that might help you: Emailing does work, but they often try to push you back into the phone route. Be firm and say clearly that you’re cancelling and require written confirmation. They sometimes claim they’ve “upgraded” subscriptions or changed pricing, so keep an eye on what they’ve actually charged you. If they don’t action the cancellation, your bank can stop recurring payments immediately. You’re definitely not the only person dealing with this the number of people having the same issue is pretty telling. Hope you get it sorted quickly! Let me know if you need wording for an email; I had to get very firm before anything happened.

I called, was on hold for about 7 minutes and then when they answered, I just had to listen to them talk about how good the price was for 3 or 4 minutes, just stood my ground and politely said no thank you and they cancelled it. A pain in the arse but not as long of a wait as I've seen some people say they've had.

Just been caught in the same trap. I was sure I cancelled, charged anyway. Went to the site to double check cancellation and I think what happened was, I got to the end of the process then they say 'call us to cancel'. I tried to call but the lines are closed on weekends. Tried to call on the Monday and couldn't get through, then forgot (and I guess my faulty memory was like "you did this task already, you've fully done it" everytime I saw the calendar reminder to do it). Absolute scummy bastards, this is their entire business model; lure people in with the trial then make it impossible to cancel like some sort of gym membership.

I used to work there. The people on the phone are treated really badly, and their commission isn't that much tbh, but staff are more concerned with hitting a daily retention quota or they lose their jobs. Also, I did witness more than one person putting through retentions when the person has cancelled.

The new online cancellation laws come into effect in the UK in April. I used to work at Beer52 and the largest department is retention staff (about 60ish), and you are treated horribly by senior call centre staff with impossible targets. Staff turnover is horrendous; have a look at reviews on Glassdoor.

That's not actually happening in the US. There was a rule, called the "click to cancel" rule that was due to come in. Essentially it would require companies to cancel any subscription using the same method they used to sign up. So if you signed up online, you could cancel online, instead of being required to call or go to a store or other physical location to do so. However the US Court of Appeals struck this rule down a few days before it was due to come in. After all, you wouldn't want consumers to have any kind of protections would you...

Finally cancelled my Beer52 subscription, what an absolute pain in the ass!!!! Took me four days of trying to get through before I finally managed to speak to someone today. They still tried to upsell me, but I was straight with them from the start: “I’ll be honest, I’m not interested in any upsell, deals or reviews. Just cancel my subscription and send me a confirmation email.” Fair play to the person on the phone , they were polite and got it done pretty quickly once I said that. But honestly, it shouldn’t be this hard to cancel something. Four days of calls and emails just to stop a subscription is ridiculous.

Tried to cancel but couldn't get hold of a human being and I have no patience. Fortunately I have set up the subscription with my revolut that I use on a top up basis, on top of that I was able to block future payment from that merchant through the app. And I also sent an email and tried to cancel that way saying I'm hard of hearing. I don't feel bad. Also I heard that the UK law now implies that the cancellation processes should be smooth as much as the subscription processes

Not at the same place, but I use it on a variety of these subscriptions across different suppliers that give a decent offer for the first box. This week it was hello fresh, paid £5 for delivery and then cancelled the card. I used to use hellofresh before I moved home. As I've moved I guess I could go through the different sites again.. :)

I've cancelled a few times and it's never been an issue. They do try and convince you to stay with some offers but a polite "no thank you" a couple of times was all that was needed. I don't get why people need to make up excuses. "No" is a complete sentence.

I had to cancel it a couple of times (signed up with a couple of emails). At that point you had to call. I was on the phone for 30/40 minutes. Then got through to what seemed like their only worker. A Scottish guy begging me to stay. I worked 9-5. But on reception so I could call in work hours.

Here is my story : I really liked one YouTuber videos watched whole bunch until she did promotion from free whiskey if you subscribe .I was like she’s legit she wouldn’t promote some scammy stuff, what I did I used my revolut bank card for it( with like few quids in founds), so I didn’t managed to cancel it and they been trying to take money out few times a day like all the time until I emailed them few times and it stopped and now I learned lesson not to feed on any YouTube promo deals as it’s all shady and stopped watching her videos as well .

I've found lately that the best way to cancel stuff is to just send a letter to the physical mailing address in the T&C stating explicitly and unambiguously that you want to cancel, and ignore any phone calls. I always end up with a cancel confirmation within a few days.

I tried to cancel, their system had automatically taken the name from my email address (not my real name) and used that for the account holder name, even though my real name was on the shipping details as the box they sent me had my correct name on it, when I gave them my name to cancel it, they said my name is incorrect and they cannot cancel my subscription because it would be violation of GDPR, I told them what the other name likely was as that's my email's name, and they still said no because you gave the wrong name in the first instance you failed our GDPR check and cannot make any changes to the account, after a long back and forth they just hung up on me. I emailed them and they finally cancelled it for me, but like come on, what a scam.

Email cancellation has worked for me in the past. It’s also not worked for me as they usually throw a good offer your way before going ahead with the cancellation. Any business model that requires you to phone them nowadays is ridiculous - I’ve only recently been able to cancel my Laithwaites subscription online instead of pushing it 12 weeks later every three months.

For many months I was able to constantly exploit their cheap first month free box. I use Untappd, and because of Beer52's ridiculous marketing being everywhere, I was constantly seeing the offer come up whenever I logged a beer. And so I would go onto it, and it would allow me to start a new subscription with the free box. I would then just email them straight away and ask that they just cancel my subscription. Or I would call up and just bluntly tell them to cancel it. This went on for months, but they finally cracked down on it and now I can't find a way to exploit it any more. I was offered various deals to which I asked if I took them up on the offer, could they schedule the account to be closed once the next box was delivered to which she said no, I’d have to call back. I said I didn’t want to spend another 20 minutes on hold, she kept saying it’s never usually that busy and I wouldn’t have the same issue next time but she was rude and kept talking over me so I just asked her to continue with the cancellation and not to worry about the offer. I will just be blunt with the and politely and firmly put across my point that I want to cancel and that I don't appreciate having my time wasted. All theses companies state that the call will be recorded, so if they really try to continue with their sales tactics I will just point out that I will simply end the call and cancel the direct debit and refer to this call as my notice of ending the subscription when they try and claim I haven't paid them, as the recording is there to protect both parties.

Going back a few years now, they hooked me with a free box, enjoyed it, had another, enjoyed it, but felt that ultimately beer is beer and it wasn't worth it.
