When people commit crimes for a cause, part of their punishment is a fine that goes directly against their cause.

This should disincentivise that sort of behaviour.

I always thought that instead of jail time they should be forced into community service. Benefit the people. Work for your freedom. Depending on the severity of the crime, perhaps they can be rehabilitated and educated in a way that whatever made them turn to crime is no longer an issue. Things like theft, robbery, they did that because they needed money desperately, so why not get them into a career that will allow them to live life more comfortably and without fear? Granted some things are pretty unforgivable, so I don’t think this form of rehab should be offered to violent or sexual offenders. But if prison meant hard work, working to survive, rather than just a cot and 3 square meals, I’d wager you might see less crimes overall. Why keep them alive for free when they could have to work to earn money for food and such, and if they choose to accept a better education so they can survive in the real world, maybe give them parole, send them to college, and hopefully they won’t need to resort to crime ever again.

This isn't a "crazy idea" this is prison abolition/reform and is a genuine philosphy/political movement lmao

So if you rob a bank to pay for your Grandma's cancer procedure- you pay a fine to 'cancer for grandmothers', which is a charity that gives cancer to grandmothers. I'm onboard.

"If the penalty for a crime is a fine, the that law only exists for the lower class"

Irrelevant here, the purpose of the fine would be less to disincentivise the action due to the raw cost and more to do so because it would fund what they consider evil.

One time I told my husband if he insisted on making off-color jokes or negative comments about perfect strangers I would start donating to organizations that support those populations every time. He stopped bc he loves money even more than he loves being an asshole. (we are divorcing now.)

Either the fines would be proportionate which would require some kind of quantitative determination of morality a la The Good Place or they wouldn't and (albeit in different ways depending on which direction) people could very easily be tricked into being forced to donate to charities they hate
