Any effect on Samsung Evo/Pro SSDs?
Elevatorteck@reddit
No, Samsung SSDs generally do not use Phison controllers; they primarily use their own in-house, proprietary controllers like the "Phoenix" and "Polaris" for their high-end consumer and enterprise drives. While there have been reports and even reviews mentioning Phison-controlled Samsung EVO drives in the past, this is not the norm for most of Samsung's lineup, which favors their own controller technology for performance and reliability.
Strazdas1@reddit
Samsung seems to be the unaffected brand once again.
Any-Environment-4636@reddit
Nope Samsung drives r being widely affected both evo plus and pro chips.
rocketjetz@reddit
I don't think Samsung uses a phison ssd controller. It'd uses either Phoenix on 970 and either Elpis or PM9A on the 980/990.
diceman2037@reddit
990 evo uses phison
rocketjetz@reddit
I don't think so. it uses Samsung's in-house, DRAM-less "Piccolo" controller, which is also found in the Samsung PM9C1a and 990 EVO Plus SSDs.
diceman2037@reddit
no, it uses Phison E31.
dtran912@reddit
It does not use Phison, why are you spreading false information?
Para15@reddit
He is sad that Samsung doesn't use it.

FUD
ultZor@reddit
I've seen some people mention it - https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows11/comments/1mvew6t/microsoft_is_investigating_windows_11_kb5063878/n9qip3y/
But anyway I would uninstall 'KB5063878' and ‘KB5062660’ and pause the updates anyway, regardless of your SSD brand, just to be safe.
Loinwash@reddit
How would you uninstall those without doing a system restore?
ultZor@reddit
Run cmd as admin and type
Natasha26uk@reddit
Apparently it only removes the security update part. The feature update which crashes Phison controller SSDs remains.
Jayztwocents posted this an hour ago: https://youtu.be/TbFIUu_7LIc
Loinwash@reddit
Thanks.
Electrical_Zebra8347@reddit
Also for people having trouble uninstalling KB5063878 even with wusa you can try doing a system restore to a date prior to these updates, that's what I had to do since windows wouldn't let me uninstall it the normal way.
Confused_Drifter@reddit
One of my laptops uninstalled straight away, the other wouldn't do it as you say, even with wusa. Honestly I think i'm just gonna roll the dice though, I really can't be bothered with a roll-back, i've just finished setting up that second one. This seems to be effected very few people, but creating a lot of panic.

I'm just sitting on windows 10 for another...month or few and probably going to linux(pc is a potato, so although i COULD get around W11 restictions, it likely wouldn't be a good time anyways)
HotStation7068@reddit
I'm also curious. So far, it seems only WD SSDs have been affected from the post that I've seen.
Pe-Te_FIN@reddit
Looks like i have been running the claimed updates for 9 days or so. No problems so far, but uninstalled them anyways. Using a Corsair T705 as main OS/games drive.
Natasha26uk@reddit
You just need to check if your drive has a Phison controller. It is the one that has been the most hurt after KB5063878.

Cynalie@reddit
I wonder about WDC PC SN730 SDBPNTY-1T00 does anyone know?
Natasha26uk@reddit
The spec sheet of the SN730 is the same as the SN740 (my drive). WD boasts about having built its own in-house controller for 96 layet 3D Nand, etc...
So no Phison here. JayzTwoCents experienced the problem on a more modern Phison controller as well: https://youtu.be/TbFIUu_7LIc (uploaded 1h ago)
jhenryscott@reddit
And THATS why I buy WD. they stopped using Phison with the SN750 and the silicon motion controller is the best in the game
popop143@reddit
Lol WD was one of the first manufacturers named in the report.
Strazdas1@reddit
WD was among the level 1 failures in the social media post (there was no report, just a single user post).
Roph@reddit
The same WD that would cause bluescreens?
X_m7@reddit
WD drives were also mentioned in the original Tom’s article about this issue, including the WD Blue SN5000 which uses a WD/SanDisk custom controller.
imaginary_num6er@reddit (OP)
And now WD is split as Sandisk
LaM3a@reddit
And we remember the self destructing Sandisk Extreme Pro...
pc-master-builder@reddit
Maybe they should spend more time testing their products instead of working on taking legal action. I have a quite a few nvme drives in my office that have a phison controller.
Never again buying phison, they have multiple issues, including degraded read speeds on E18 controller.
Im only going to buy nvme drives with Silicon Motion controller.
soru_baddogai@reddit
Blame Microsoft not them.
Strazdas1@reddit
Why blame the party thats not at fault?
pc-master-builder@reddit
I agree ms messed up, there are other issues with Phison outside of this update.
pc-master-builder@reddit
Can someone explain what this update actually does to affect certain nvme drives?
IWasShoe@reddit
if they reach a certain wright limit it crashes the ssd but in most case you can just restart to fix it but it cause BOS if you have it happin to your OS drive. still find it weird that its just one type of ssd
diego5377@reddit
I’ve been having ssd issues since that update aswell, I wonder if it’s happening on other ssds aswell
IWasShoe@reddit
its been tested on alot of different Ssd and hdd and a good chunk of the failing ones all have phison controller
Pe-Te_FIN@reddit
Have you seen any other sources, than the one that started all of this. I havent.
Strazdas1@reddit
yep, we now have multiple articles and even manufacturers responding to claims to what is basically one guy said on social media.
IWasShoe@reddit
im notting saying other brands of ssd are not filling im saying that a good bit of them all share one thing in commonThe absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. If i have 100 different tools and 60 of them have failed even if they are different brands but share one part that is the same its the part not the brand. the major common part that most of the failling ssd being heavily reported all have phison with other brands as will but the number show higher on one side
diego5377@reddit
I looked up my team group ssd and it looks like they use it. I was gonna ram it recently but it got better when I rolled back a update, but it’s now acting like how it was
IWasShoe@reddit
you could ram it but I don't know how its beenint handle cause I stop really using my pc is this update not really a worry for me
diego5377@reddit
I also bought a 2 tb new ssd but I made the mistake of using the updated verision of windows and it kept corrupting my files no matter how many time I repair or go back the windows version.
I returned it thinking it was just my luck and the old one fixed it self so thought it was just random at the time.
Strazdas1@reddit
Probably another case of manufacturer did something funky in firmware to get around a windows limitation and didnt think of future impact. like the buffer limit issues last year.
Rocky970@reddit
And here I am troubleshooting a bricked phison ssd
lifeisashitpost@reddit
I'm extremely confused by what's going on. So far I've had this issue happen twice this year. Once prior to installing KB5063878 and once after uninstalling it. I'm using (among others) a WD SN850x and two different WD HDDs. The first time one of the HDDs disappeared while copying a large video file and the second time the other HDD disappeared while doing basically nothing. The SN850x has been fine so far.
Metalgear990@reddit
That’s interesting so I’m not a pro but it sounds like it corrupted one of your drives. And I hope a restart brought it back but I’d reformat after a back up that data and try again. I had the file downloaded and paused updates to have windows ignore that and download the update I stopped it by hitting pause updates for 5 weeks again and shut my pc down I haven’t been able to play any games for almost the rest of the week I hope it didn’t ignore me again and won’t force me to download it because I just built a new system just before this update and don’t want to deal with this just at all especially after spending almost $2k on this pc.
the_mooseman@reddit
Using the same drives and it just made two of them die. This was prior to installing KB5063878. It had already downloaded and was waiting to install, it only installed after i rebooted when i tried to see if a reboot would bring those 2 drivers back to life (it didnt). I then had to go uninstall the KB. Now doing data recovery on those drives. Thanks MS...
DeadPhoenix86@reddit
I just send my SSD as RMA. Since it had 5 years of warranty.
I'm surprised they even approved it. But at least I get a working drive back.
This is what happens when you rely on A.I...
HotStation7068@reddit
What was the brand of your SSD?
DeadPhoenix86@reddit
WD SN850.
Nihilistic_Mystics@reddit
Doesn't that use a Sandisk proprietary controller and not Phison?
LAwLzaWU1A@reddit
How is this AIs fault?
callanrocks@reddit
Because Microsoft no longer consider AI optional.
LAwLzaWU1A@reddit
Ah yes, because as we know Microsoft never wrote buggy code before. That's how we can be so sure that any issue with their software from this day forward has to be caused by AI. Thanks for the heads up.
DeadPhoenix86@reddit
A.I destroys all !

monkaS, what about my KC3000 with the Phison PS5018-E18 ???
Blackb2001@reddit
Wondering the same with my kingston fury renegade 2tb
ArapMario@reddit
i have the same ssd. i downloaded around 200 gb of data and haven't had any issues since august 17th, but uninstalling the update just to be sure.
Infected_Toe@reddit
I've got a KC3000, and I just uninstalled the update.
PeakHippocrazy@reddit
same did just now I have 2 of them
Infected_Toe@reddit
Remember to reboot. I paused Windows Update for 5 weeks and disabled updates for other Microsoft products. So if there's a fix in 5 weeks time, I'll eventually download it automatically.
trid45@reddit
I wonder who made and sent out the document to Phison's partners. Short holders, a competitor, a disgruntled Phison SSD owner?
Candid_Report955@reddit
Disgruntled SSD owners is a new one. Call them the "Deep Users". An disgruntled having its tentacles all over the globe like an octopus.
