Something about a sail boat among icebergs is sooo beautiful. Like the closing scene of 50 First Dates. I can just imagine myself coming up on deck and soaking in that view

this is most certainly an ad. let's hear the details.

This is bark Europa. They always visit Antartica in the southern summer.
I did the last summer leg. We started in ushuaia, southern Argentina, then we went South Georgia, Tristan da Cunha and finally ended in South Africa.
The Antartic legs are the most expensive because you have to pay a conservation fee that is really expensive. If it were not for that i would not coinsider this type of travelling (tall ship sailing) expensive and it is one of the most fun. You have a great sense of community and get a new perspective of many things
I was 19 and did this one alone. It was more than 50 days no internet and most of the days with rough weather. You have to help in certain sailing tasks but it is not a big deal, the main concern is the schedule (there has to be always people helping 24 hs) and that the weather and sleeping conditions attrition you.
Nevertheless I made quite a lot of friends of people of all ages and all countries.
It was such a great experience that once I finish university would like to go back and try to work as a deck hand or apply my studies as engineer and work onboard.

I did not even know this type of travel was possible this sounds absolutely amazing. Stupid question but I assume everyone is wearing harnesses when they go aloft?
Facxmon@reddit
Yes. It is safe. You only clip in in certain parts. When you are in a risk of falling areas. I have plenty of pictures if you want to see.
The work aloft is the best part. A lot of concentration is requieres and at first it is scary. While furling and unfurling it was nice.
One of my dearest memories was at night that we were cruising. It was a windy but silent night we climbed in the dark to tie some things up there. It was strange because there was no light so you had to use your peripheral vision to see clearly. As I was looking in the horizon I remember seeing the bioluminesence because there were dolphings coming towards the ship so you could see the clearer patches where they hopped out of the water.
I strongly recomend this type of travel. It is as I say expensive and uncomfortable (at first) but it is a whole vibe, plus you can also visit some remote places and learn cool stuff.
I also didn't know about this, but there are quite an offer. A lot of the ships that participate in the tall ship races in the Netherlands also do this projects in other parts of the world.
A girl that also went in the voyage with me also got certified and came back on board as a profesional crew member a year later and sometimes works on some voyages.
