The reason is actually pretty cool. They don't use their jaws to feed. Whales have been spotted with missing or deformed jaws but are well fed and healthy. They feed by throat suction, not their jaws.

They use their jaws to fight each other and as we see here communicate.

Not communication calls, but sperm whales can vocalise incredibly strong and focused to either stun small prey or inspect something really thoroughly.

I think the "can kill a diver" thing is more of a maths experiment, but divers have reported that sperm whales that are interested in them call so loud you can feel your body vibrating
